ABSTRACT

Food consumption is increasingly impacting environmental sustainability. Building on the latest data of China Statistical Yearbook 2015-2020, this study quantified the dietary ecological footprint per capita (EFP), including animal-based and plant-based EFP, across seven provinces (representing seven regions) and between urban and rural areas of China. We further analyzed the possible correlated factors with the EFP and the strength of these correlations. The results showed that the EFP in southern areas was generally higher than that in northern areas, and the EFP in urban areas was higher than that in rural areas. The EFP was significantly correlated with per capita disposable income (PCDI), food consumption (FC) quantity, urban/rural status, southern/northern areas, and provinces. Moreover, we found geographical locations (i.e., southern/northern areas and provinces) contributed more to the total and animal-based EFP than economic conditions (i.e., urban/rural status and PCDI). Although pork price dramatically influenced the dietary patterns, it did not affect the total or animal-based EFP. These findings provide novel insights for understanding the mechanisms of the relationship between food consumption and environmental sustainability in China. The conclusions are helpful in predicting the future environmental impacts of diets in other countries with similar national conditions.

ABSTRACT

As an indicator of sustainable development, the ecological footprint has been successful in providing a basis for discussing the environmental impacts of human consumption. Humans are at the origin of numerous pollutant activities on Earth and are the primary drivers of climate change. However, very little research has been conducted on the environmental impacts of animals, especially companion animals. Often regarded as friends or family members by their owners, companion animals need significant amounts of food in order to sustain their daily energy requirement. The ecological paw print (EPP) could therefore serve as a useful indicator for assessing the impacts of companion animals on the environment. In the present article, we explain the environmental impact of companion dogs and cats by quantifying their dietary EPP and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions according to primary data we collected in China, the Netherlands, and Japan and discuss how to reduce companion dietary EPP and GHG emissions in order to understand the sustainability of the relationship between companion animals and the environment.

ABSTRACT

The social context and culture in which individuals grow shapes their perspectives through life. Early on, children learn about animals through storybooks, animated movies, toys, and through interactions with pets and wildlife, and will slowly start to build beliefs around those experiences. Their attitudes towards animals will be influenced by a number of factors, including: sex, age, nationality/ethnicity, residence area, animal-related activities and hobbies, food habits, culture/religion education, and pet ownership. A case study of Dutch and Belgian high school students (aged 12⁻21) investigated the attitudes of young people towards animals. By using the Animal Attitude Scale (AAS) and the Animal Issue Scale (AIS) questionnaires, our study shows that levels of concern for animal welfare were distinctly higher among: female participants; those who ate little to no meat; Belgian students; pet owners; and those who had been to a zoo at least once. In general, students who reported having more contact with animals also had more positive attitudes towards animals. To understand younger generations and their attitudes toward animals is to understand how future generations will look towards and treat our fellow animals, with which we share the planet Earth.

ABSTRACT

Recently, studies in the United States and European countries have shown that the degree of attachment is associated with the attribution of emotions to companion animals. These studies imply that investigating the degree of attachment to companion animals is a good way for researchers to explore animal emotions and then improve animal welfare. Although a promising area of study, in Japan, no empirical studies have examined the correlation between the degree of attachment and the attribution of emotions to companion animals. In this research, we aimed to assess companion animal owners' attribution of six primary (anger, joy, sadness, disgust, fear and surprise) and four secondary (shame, jealousy, disappointment and compassion) emotions to their dogs and cats, as well as how the degree of attachment related to such attribution of emotions from a Japanese cultural perspective. The "Pet Bonding Scale" (PBS), which is used to determine the level of bonding between humans and animals, was introduced to measure respondents' degree of attachment to their companion animals. The results of a questionnaire (N = 546) distributed throughout Japan showed that respondents attributed a wide range of emotions to their animals. Companion animals' primary emotions, compared to secondary emotions, were more commonly attributed by their owners. The attribution of compassion and jealousy was reported at a high level (73.1% and 56.2%, respectively), which was surprising as compassion and jealousy are generally defined as secondary emotions. All participants were highly attached to their companion animals, and this attachment was positively associated with the attribution of emotions (9/10) to companion animals (all p < 0.05). This study is one of the first to investigate animal emotions by analyzing the bonding between companion animals and owners in Japan, and it can therefore provide knowledge to increase Japanese people's awareness of animal welfare.

ABSTRACT

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common inflammatory diseases resulting from habitual smoking. Impaired clearance of apoptotic cell by airway macrophages contributes to lung inflammation. Milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 (MFG-E8), as a link between apoptotic cells and phagocytes, facilitates clearance of apoptotic cells and attenuates inflammation. We sought to investigate altered expression and potential role of MFG-E8 in COPD. In this study, apoptosis was increased and the level of MFG-E8 was decreased while HMGB1 expression was increased in lung tissues of CS-exposed mice. Compared with CS-exposed WT mice, more apoptotic cells were accumulated in lung tissues of CS-exposed MFG-E8 deficiency mice. Exposure of a range of macrophages to cigarette smoke extract (CSE) resulted in decreased MFG-E8 expression. Administration of rmMFG-E8 ameliorated phagocytic ability of RAW264.7 cells and suppressed inflammatory response induced by CS-exposure. 10% CSE stimulation suppressed Rac1 membrane localization in RAW264.7 cells which was restored by administration of rmMFG-E8. MFG-E8 deficiency diminished uptake of apoptotic thymocytes by peritoneal macrophages upon CSE exposure. Overall, the findings in current work provide a novel target for diagnosing and treating COPD.

ABSTRACT

Schistosomiasis is an important zoonosis and some livestock especially bovine and swine play a crucial role on the disease transmission in endemic areas. The gold standard for animal Schistosoma japonicum infection is fecal examination although indirect agglutination assay (IHA) is so far mostly used in field survey and laboratory examination. Lack of sensitivity, poor practicality and high false positivity limit the use of those methods for routine veterinary detection as well as human diagnosis. A novel immunomagnetic bead ELISA based on IgY (egg yolk immunoglobulin) was developed for detection of circulating schistosomal antigen (CSA) in sera of hosts infected with S. japonicum. To assess the application of this method for diagnosis of domestic animal schistosomiasis with urine sample, the immunomagnetic bead ELISA based on IgY (IgY-IMB-ELISA) was employed in the present study to detect CSA in urine of murine schistosomiasis with either light (10 S. japonicum cercariae infection per mouse) or heavy infection (30 S. japonicum cercariae infection per mouse). The results showed that the CSA levels in urine of heavily and lightly infected mice reached a peak in 8 and 10 weeks after infection, respectively, remaining at a constant plateau in both groups by the end of the experiment (14 weeks after infection). The CSA level in urine of heavily infected mice was much higher than that of lightly infected mice from 8 to 14 weeks after infection. The effect of praziquantel treatment on the CSA level in urine of heavily infected mice was also investigated. It was found that the CSA level in urine of heavily infected mice with treatment was much lower than that of untreated mice at 4 weeks post-treatment, although still higher than that of control mice, and then gradually descended to the background level by 8 weeks after treatment. Our findings suggested that the IgY-IMB-ELISA may be an efficient and practical tool in non-invasive diagnosis of schistosome infection based on antigen detection, and evaluation of the efficacy of chemotherapy as well.

ABSTRACT

We have developed a novel egg yolk antibody (IgY)-coated magnetic beads antigen-capture immunoassay for detection of a circulating antigen of Schistosoma japonicum in serum samples of patients in schistosomiasis-endemic areas of China. This IgY-based immunomagnetic bead enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (IgY-IMB-ELISA) uses polyclonal IgY-coated magnetic beads as a capture antibody, and a monoclonal IgG as a detection antibody. The sensitivity of the magnetic immunoassay was 100% (40 of 40) in cases of acute infection and 91.5% (107 of 117) in chronic cases of schistosomiasis, and no positive reaction was found in 0 of 49 healthy persons. Cross-reactivity was 3.3% (1 of 33) with clonorchiasis and 0% (0 of 20) with paragonimiasis. There was a significant correlation between ELISA absorbance value and egg count (eggs per gram feces) and a correlation coefficient of 0.88 in a small sample of 14 patients. The results demonstrated that the IgY-IMB-ELISA is a sensitive and specific assay for detection of human schistosomiasis japonica.
