ABSTRACT

To achieve a high transmittance and extinction ratio for the polarized white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), the package structures of polarized WLEDs that are pumped by blue LEDs are studied. A WLED is implemented using a nano-wire grid polarizer (NWGP) and forms a pumping cavity. Combining the reflection and transmission characteristics of a NWGP, the optimized package structure has an air gap between the phosphor resin and the NWGP. Specifically, the angular dependence of the chromaticity coordinates and spatial uniformity of the radiation pattern are investigated and are more uniform than those of conventional LEDs.

ABSTRACT

The thermal stability of blue LEDs and yellow YAG phosphor for blue-pumped white LEDs is critical to the performance of white LEDs, including the color properties and luminous efficacy. To investigate the thermal effect on the color properties of emitted white light, the junction temperature of the excitation blue LED was raised by increasing the supplied current. However, by choosing an optical filter with the appropriate transmittance spectrum for processing a portion of the blue light output and reexciting the secondary yellow emission, we observed a reduction in color instability and lower color temperature across the current range of 20-200 mA. Moreover, the color temperature distribution was improved.

ABSTRACT

This study proposed a correlated color temperature (CCT) tunable phosphor-converted white light emitting diode (LED) with an omni-directional reflector (ODR). Applying current to each individual InGaN based ultraviolet, purple and blue source LED chip of the white LED package, we can achieve the CCT tunability. The optimum color properties of the resulting white light are (0.3347, 0.3384), 5398 K, 81, 3137-8746 K for color coordinates, CCT, color rendering index (CRI) and CCT tuning range, respectively. Roughening the ODR substrate, we solve the non-uniformity color distribution caused by the reflectance of the ODR and positioning of source LED chips.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates white light emitting diodes (LEDs), packaged with an omnidirectional reflector (ODR) and UV LED of 378 nm. The current work designs an ODR to solve the problems of UV leak and low phosphors conversion efficiency with a thin film structure of S/(HLH)n/air modified from a quarter-wave stack. Since an ODR is a perfect dielectric mirror for UV light, the UV leak can be eliminated and recycled to enhance phosphors conversion efficiency. By measuring the emission spectrum of a white LED with an ODR, the orientation distribution of the color properties, and the radiation power, the current study did not detect any UV leak. The average luminous intensity enhancement is 15%.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we proposed an alternative type of multi-port polarization-independent optical quasi-circulator by using a pair of holographic spatial- and polarization- modules. The prototype is fabricated and experimentally tested. In addition, the operating principles, the characteristics and the performances of this device are discussed. The merits of this design include polarization-independence, compactness, high isolation, low polarization mode dispersion, and easy fabrication. Furthermore, the number of ports can be scaled up easily.

ABSTRACT

Based on the coupled-wave theory, a holographic spatial walk-off polarizer (HSWP) is designed. This HSWP is a transmission-type phase volume holographic grating on a substrate and its optical recording geometry can be derived from Chen's corrected methodology with a desired reconstruction condition. A pair of fabricated HSWPs with the splitting angle of 60 degrees is applied to assemble a new type of 4-port polarizationindependent optical circulator. The operating principles and the characteristics of the proposed HSWP and the prototype optical circulator are discussed.
