ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: On 1 February 2016, the World Health Organization declared Zika transmission a public health emergency of international concern. Monitoring and responding to community awareness, concern, and possible knowledge gaps are critical during public health emergencies. Here, we describe the review and analysis of micro-blogs posted on Sina-Weibo, China's largest social media platform, to develop and disseminate a Zika virus education campaign. METHODS: We used CYYUN Voice Express' Weibo Spider tool and the search terms of "Zhaika" OR "Zika" OR "Zikv" to capture microblogs about Zika virus retrospectively from February 1 to December 31, 2016 and prospectively from June 1 to November 15, 2017. We described microblogs meeting our inclusion criteria by month and Zika virus outbreaks in Asia and by source (e.g., government agency, individual, or other). We identified common misleading or inaccurate content authored by individual micro-bloggers (i.e., not supported by available scientific evidence) through a qualitative review. We used this information to develop and disseminate health awareness material about the Zika virus through China CDC's 12320 Health Hotline Weibo account. An online survey was conducted to obtain feedback on the material. RESULTS: We captured 15,888 microblogs meeting our inclusion criteria. Zika-related microblogs peaked in September 2016, corresponding to news reports about the Zika outbreak in Singapore (August to November 2016). Most microblogs (12,994 [82%]) were authored by individual users, followed by media agencies (842 [5%]), businesses (829 [5%]), international organizations (370 [2%]), and Chinese government agencies (235 [1%]). Relevant microblogs primarily focused on clinical symptoms and health risks, modes of transmission, and actions taken by individuals to prevent infection and seek health care. Incorrect and/or mis-leading information from individual users concentrated on modes of transmission and possible treatments. The microblog "#Zika is that far and this close" health campaign was posted on Sina-Weibo and Baidu (Internet search engine in China) on September 18, 2016. Younger respondents (p-value = 0.01), and those with at least a college education (p-value = 0.03), were more likely than other respondents to consider the online campaign reliable and trustworthy. CONCLUSION: Routine review of Sina-Weibo and other social media platforms could enhance the ability of public health staff to effectively respond to community concerns and awareness during public health emergencies. Advancements of social media monitoring tools and staff training could help to promote health awareness during emergencies by directly addressing public perceptions and concerns. Various approaches may be needed to reach different at-risk populations, particularly older and less educated populations who may prefer more traditional modes of communication.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global healthcare problem, including in China where high rates of resistance to common bacterial infections have been documented. In 2016, the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) in China established a comprehensive strategic plan to increase awareness about AMR through education programs. METHODS: We conducted an online survey to assess changes in public knowledge, awareness and practices related to AMR in China since 2016. The survey was administered using China's national and provincial level 12320 Health Hotline Weibo (micro-blog site) and WeChat (text messaging service) social media accounts from April 12, 2019 to May 7, 2019. All persons ≥16 years of age able to read Chinese were eligible to participate. RESULTS: A total of 2773 respondents completed the survey. Of the 2633 respondents indicating recent use of antibiotics, 84% (2223) reported obtaining their course of antibiotics from a hospital or pharmacy, 9% (246) of respondents reported using antibiotics saved from a previous prescription or treatment course, and 42% (1115) of respondents reported that they had stopped taking antibiotics as soon as they started feeling better. Most respondents correctly indicated that antibiotics can effectively treat urinary tract infections (86% [2388]) and skin infections (76% [2119]), but many incorrectly indicated that antibiotics can also treat viral infections such as measles (32% [889]) or a cold or flu (26% [726]). Of all respondents, 95% (2634) had heard of 'antibiotic resistance'. Almost half (47% [1315]) reported using antibiotics within the last 6 months. CONCLUSION: While awareness of AMR was high in this survey of social media users in China, inappropriate antibiotic use remains common, including the believe that antibiotics can effectively treat viral infections. Multiple interventions targeting the correct use of antibiotics and information on the cause AMR are likely needed. The 12320 Health Hotline provides a platform for conducting routine surveys to monitor antibiotic use and knowledge about AMR.

ABSTRACT

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is a beneficial strategy for generating highly effective solid-state molecular luminescence without suffering losses in quantum yield. However, the majority of reported AIE-active molecules exhibit only strong fluorescence, which is not ideal for electrical excitation in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). By introducing various substituent groups onto the biscarbazole compound, a series of molecular materials with aggregation-induced phosphorescence (AIP) is designed, which exhibits two distinctly different phosphorescence bands and an absolute solid-state room-temperature phosphorescence quantum yield up to 64%. Taking advantage of the AIE feature, the AIP molecules are fabricated into OLEDs as a homogeneous light-emitting layer, which allows for relatively small efficiency roll-off and shows an external electroluminescence quantum yield of up to 5.8%, more than the theoretical limit for purely fluorescent OLED devices. The design showcases a promising strategy for the production of cost-effective and highly efficient OLED technology.

ABSTRACT

Recently, N,N-trans Re(O)(LN-O)2X (LN-O = monoanionic N-O chelates; X = Cl or Br prior to being replaced by solvents or alkoxides) complexes have been found to be superior to the corresponding N,N-cis isomers in the catalytic reduction of perchlorate via oxygen atom transfer. However, reported methods for Re(O)(LN-O)2X synthesis often yield only the N,N-cis complex or a mixture of trans and cis isomers. This study reports a geometry-inspired ligand design rationale that selectively yields N,N-trans Re(O)(LN-O)2Cl complexes. Analysis of the crystal structures revealed that the dihedral angles (DAs) between the two LN-O ligands of N,N-cis Re(O)(LN-O)2Cl complexes are less than 90°, whereas the DAs in most N,N-trans complexes are greater than 90°. Variably sized alkyl groups (-Me, -CH2Ph, and -CH2Cy) were then introduced to the 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline (Hhoz) ligand to increase steric hindrance in the N,N-cis structure, and it was found that substituents as small as -Me completely eliminate the formation of N,N-cis isomers. The generality of the relationship between N,N-trans/cis isomerism and DAs is further established from a literature survey of 56 crystal structures of Re(O)(LN-O)2X, Re(O)(LO-N-N-O)X, and Tc(O)(LN-O)2X congeners. Density functional theory calculations support the general strategy of introducing ligand steric hindrance to favor synthesis of N,N-trans Re(O)(LN-O)2X and Tc(O)(LN-O)2X complexes. This study demonstrates the promise of applying rational ligand design for isomeric control of metal complex structures, providing a path forward for innovations in a number of catalytic, environmental, and biomedical applications.

ABSTRACT

This study develops synthetic strategies for N,N-trans and N,N-cis Re(O)(LO-N)2Cl complexes and investigates the effects of the coordination spheres and ligand structures on ancillary ligand exchange dynamics and catalytic perchlorate reduction activities of the corresponding [Re(O)(LO-N)2](+) cations. The 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxazoline (Hhoz) and 2-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-thiazoline (Hhtz) ligands are used to prepare homoleptic N,N-trans and N,N-cis isomers of both Re(O)(hoz)2Cl and Re(O)(htz)2Cl and one heteroleptic N,N-trans Re(O)(hoz)(htz)Cl. Selection of hoz/htz ligands determines the preferred isomeric coordination sphere, and the use of substituted pyridine bases with varying degrees of steric hindrance during complex synthesis controls the rate of isomer interconversion. The five corresponding [Re(O)(LO-N)2](+) cations exhibit a wide range of solvent exchange rates (1.4 to 24,000 s(-1) at 25 °C) and different LO-N movement patterns, as influenced by the coordination sphere of Re (trans/cis), the noncoordinating heteroatom on LO-N ligands (O/S), and the combination of the two LO-N ligands (homoleptic/heteroleptic). Ligand exchange dynamics also correlate with the activity of catalytic reduction of aqueous ClO4(-) by H2 when the Re(O)(LO-N)2Cl complexes are immobilized onto Pd/C. Findings from this study provide novel synthetic strategies and mechanistic insights for innovations in catalytic, environmental, and biomedical research.

ABSTRACT

The nature of the electronic ground state of the tetramethyleneethane (TME) diradical has proven to be a challenge for both experiment and theory. Through the use of quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods and multireference perturbation theory, we demonstrate that the lowest singlet state of TME is energetically lower than the lowest triplet state at all values of the torsional angle between the allyl subunits. Moreover, we find that the maximum in the potential energy curve for the singlet state occurs at a torsional angle near 45°, in contrast to previous calculations that placed the planar structure of the singlet state as the highest in energy. We also show that the CASPT2 method when used with a sufficiently large reference space and a sufficiently flexible basis set gives potential energy curves very close to those from the QMC calculations. Our calculations have converged the singlet-triplet gap of TME as a function of methodology and basis set. These results provide insight into the level of theory required to properly model diradicals, in particular disjoint diradicals, and provide guidelines for future studies on more complicated diradical systems.

ABSTRACT

Vinyl ethers can be protonated to generate oxocarbenium ions that react with Me3SiCN to form cyanohydrin alkyl ethers. Reactions that form racemic products proceed efficiently upon conversion of the vinyl ether to an α-chloro ether prior to cyanide addition in a pathway that proceeds through Brønsted acid-mediated chloride ionization. Enantiomerically enriched products can be accessed by directly protonating the vinyl ether with a chiral Brønsted acid to form a chiral ion pair. Me3SiCN acts as the nucleophile and PhOH serves as a stoichiometric proton source in a rare example of asymmetric bimolecular nucleophilic addition into an oxocarbenium ion. Computational studies have provided a model for the interaction between the catalyst and the oxocarbenium ion.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To understand ways of life among poverty-stricken farmers from western areas of China. METHODS: Questionnaires on ways of life were designed, using cluster random sampling method to study 5516 rural residents, aged 15 - 69, from 84 administrative villages, 42 project townships and 16 project counties in Shanxi and Gansu, Qinghai, Xinjiang provinces. RESULTS: 5343 valid questionnaires included 2178 males and 3165 females, with the average age as 43.4 years old. 2965 people were with minority ethnicities and another 2378 were Hans. Most of the respondents had received junior high school (37.7%) or primary school (32.1%) education with 62.1% of the respondents working in the agricultural areas. The overall smoking rate among them was 22.4%. The rates of smoking in males in Qinghai and Shanxi provinces were obviously higher than those in other provinces, with the highest seen in Shanxi. The overall rate of alcohol intake was 13.9%, and the highest seen in Shanxi and Qinghai. The alcohol intake in males was higher in Shanxi and Qinghai, than in other provinces while in female it was significantly lower in Shanxi than in the other three provinces. The health related habits were different in the four provinces, including the amount of weekly intake of milk or dairy products, fresh vegetables, bean products, animal viscera, fried food, pickled or smoked food products and livestock meat, with statistically significant differences. CONCLUSION: Life styles of farmers living in the poverty-stricken areas in Gansu, Qinghai, Shanxi and Xinjiang were different. Strategies related to the real situation on each province need to be developed which would include effective health education and with the aid of '12320 hotline services' to help the residents build up a healthy lifestyle.

ABSTRACT

The (HCOOH)(2) anion, formed by electron attachment to the formic acid dimer (FA(2)), is an archetypal system for exploring the mechanics of the electron-induced proton transfer motif that is purported to occur when neutral nucleic acid base-pairs accommodate an excess electron [K. Aflatooni, G. A. Gallup, and P. D. Burrow, J. Phys. Chem. A 102, 6205 (1998); J. H. Hendricks, S. A. Lyapustina, H. L. de Clercq, J. T. Snodgrass, and K. H. Bowen, J. Chem Phys. 104, 7788 (1996); C. Desfrancois, H. Abdoul-Carime, and J. P. Schermann, ibid. 104, 7792 (1996)]. The FA(2) anion and several of its H∕D isotopologues were isolated in the gas phase and characterized using Ar-tagged vibrational predissociation and electron autodetachment spectroscopies. The photoelectron spectrum of the FA(2) anion was also recorded using velocity-map imaging. The resulting spectroscopic information verifies the equilibrium FA(2)(-) geometry predicted by theory which features a symmetrical, double H-bonded bridge effectively linking together constituents that most closely resemble the formate ion and a dihydroxymethyl radical. The spectroscopic signatures of this ion were analyzed with the aid of calculated anharmonic vibrational band patterns.
