ABSTRACT

We announce the genome sequencing, assembly, and annotation of the OLsAu1 strain and its taxonomic assignment to Pseudomonas yamanorum. The isolate comes from a wild edible ectomycorrhizal Lactarius sp. mushroom in the Abies forest. There is information regarding the strain's ability to promote plant growth, indicating its potential application in forestry.

RESUMEN Introducción: el exceso de actividad hormonal biológica de origen paratiroideo es motivo de consulta frecuente en la práctica endocrinológica, aunque también acuden remitidos de servicios como nefrología, ortopedia o cirugía maxilofacial por las variadas presentaciones clínicas de la enfermedad. Presentación del caso: paciente femenina, de 34 años de edad, con antecedentes patológicos personales de insuficiencia renal crónica. Acudió a la institución por presentar cambios en su aspecto corporal, sobre todo a nivel del macizo facial. El examen físico mostró alteraciones ostio-mio-articulares. La radiografía de pelvis mostró una disminución de la densidad ósea y diástais de la sínfisis del pubis. La ganmagrafía de paratiroides en dos fases detectó hiperplasia paratiroidea. La tomografía axial computarizada de cráneo mostró marcada destrucción y reabsorción ósea. Se planteó un hiperparatiroidismo terciario. Conclusiones: el hiperparatiroidismo terciario constituye una de las causas menos frecuentes de hiperfunción paratiroidea; puede presentarse como consecuencia de un trastorno renal que se perpetúa en el tiempo. El diagnóstico y tratamiento oportuno disminuye incidencia de comorbilidades. La paratiroidectomía representa el tratamiento de elección, con altas tasas de curación.


ABSTRACT Introduction: the excess of biological hormonal activity of parathyroid origin is a frequent reason for consultation in endocrinological practice, although referrals from services such as nephrology, orthopedics or maxillofacial surgery are also referred due to the varied clinical presentations of the disease. Case presentation: a 34-year-old female patient with a personal medical history of chronic renal failure. He went to the institution for presenting changes in his body appearance, especially at the level of the facial massif. The physical examination showed ostio-myo-articular alterations. The pelvic X-ray showed decreased bone density and diastasis of the pubic symphysis. Two-stage parathyroid scan detected parathyroid hyperplasia. Computed tomography of the skull showed marked bone destruction and resorption. Tertiary hyperparathyroidism was suggested. Conclusions: tertiary hyperparathyroidism is one of the less frequent causes of parathyroid hyperfunction; It can occur as a consequence of a renal disorder that is perpetuated over time. Timely diagnosis and treatment decreases the incidence of comorbidities. Parathyroidectomy represents the treatment of choice, with high cure rates.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine whether estradiol (E2) levels (Day 3 and fold change to Day 10), antral follicle count (AFC), and number of ova collected could predict ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and culdocentesis intervention. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patient charts between January 2008 and December 2017. OHSS was defined using American Society for Reproductive Medicine criteria. Predictability was evaluated by measuring the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: The cohort included 319 women (166 controls, 153 OHSS, of whom 54 had severe OHSS). The OHSS group had higher E2Day 3 (249 ± 177 vs. 150 ± 230 ng/L), E2FoldChange (32.2 ± 29.1 vs. 20.1 ± 23.8), AFC (18.2 ± 9.1 vs. 11.6 ± 8.3), and number of ova collected (21.1 ± 9.0 vs. 10.1 ± 6.5). E2Day 3 (AUC = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.71-0.82), E2FoldChange (AUC = 0.71, 95%CI: 0.65-0.77), AFC (AUC = 0.75, 95%CI: 0.70-0.81), and number of ova collected (AUC = 0.85, 95%CI: 0.81-0.89) were predictive for OHSS. All variables were predictive for culdocentesis intervention (E2Day 3: AUC = 0.63, 95%CI: 0.55-0.70; E2FoldChange: AUC = 0.63, 95%CI: 0.55-0.71; AFC: AUC = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.68-0.80; number of ova collected: AUC = 0.80, 95%CI: 0.75-0.85). CONCLUSIONS: Day 3 E2 levels and number of ova collected predict patients who could develop OHSS and may require culdocentesis.

ABSTRACT This research evaluated the changes on populations of culturable N-fixing free bacteria (NFFB) and P-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), as well as on the root nodulation by native rhizobia, the root colonization and spore number of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), in the rhizosphere of Clitoria ternatea and Brachiaria brizantha grown in mesocosms contaminated with crude oil (0, 3000, 6000, 9000, and 12000 mg kg-1), for 240 days. After 24 h of soil contamination, the highest populations of NFFB and PSB (5.5 and 4.9 LogUFC, respectively) were found in control, and the lowest populations were obtained at 12000 mg kg-1 (5.1 and 4.2 LogUFC, respectively). In contrast, at 60 and 240 days, the control showed lower populations of NFFB and PSB (5.4 and 4.8 LogUFC, respectively) than contaminated treatments. The highest number of root nodules in C. ternatea was quantified in control at 60 and 240 days (25 and 27 nodules, respectively) in comparison to those observed at the treatment with 12000 mg kg-1 (7 and 1 nodule, respectively). At 60 days, AMF colonization in both plant species, and the number of spores significantly decreased as the crude oil concentration increased; however, at 240 days, the highest number of AMF spores was recorded at treatments with 6000 and 12000 mg kg-1. The dry weight of both plant species significantly decreased as crude oil concentrations increased. Although C. ternatea was more susceptible to the toxic effects of crude oil, this plant species showed greater content of total chlorophyll than B. brizantha.


RESUMEN Esta investigación evaluó los cambios en la población cultivable de bacterias de vida libre fijadoras de nitrógeno (BVLFN) y de bacterias solubilizadoras de fósforo (BSP), así como en la nodulación de raíces por rizobios nativos, y en la colonización y número de esporas de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares (HMA) en la rizósfera de Clitoria ternatea y Brachiaria brizantha cultivadas en mesocosmos contaminados con petróleo crudo (0, 3000, 6000, 9000 y 12000 mg kg-1), durante 240 días. A las 24 h de la contaminación del suelo, las poblaciones más altas de BVLFN y BSP (5,5 y 4,9 LogUFC, respectivamente) se encontraron en el control, mientras que las poblaciones más bajas se obtuvieron a 12000 mg kg-1 (5,1 y 4,2 LogUFC, respectivamente). En contraste, a los 60 y 240 días, el control mostró bajas poblaciones de BVLFN y BSP (5,4 y 4,8 LogUFC, respectivamente) que los tratamientos contaminados. El mayor número de nódulos en raíz de C. ternatea se cuantificó en el control a los 60 y 240 días (25 y 27 nódulos, respectivamente) en comparación con el tratamiento con 12000 mg kg-1 (7 y 1 nódulos, respectivamente). A los 60 días, la colonización de HMA en ambas especies vegetales y el número de esporas disminuyeron significativamente al aumentar la concentración de petróleo crudo; sin embargo, a los 240 días, se registró el mayor número de esporas de HMA en los tratamientos con 6000 y 12000 mg kg-1. El peso seco vegetal disminuyó significativamente al aumentar las concentraciones de petróleo crudo. Clitoria ternatea fue más susceptible a la toxicidad del petróleo, aunque esta especie vegetal mostró mayor contenido de clorofila total que B. brizantha.

ABSTRACT

OEIS is the acronym of a malformations complex association including omphalocele, exstrophy of bladder or cloaca, imperforate anus, and spinal defects. It has a very low prevalence, ranging from 1/82,000 to 1/200,000 live births (LB). The etiology of OEIS is unknown. Virtually all cases are sporadic, and specific associated risk factors uncertain. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the prevalence, clinical spectrum, possible early pregnancy exposures, and demographic characteristics as potentially associated risk factors in a sample of Mexican cases. METHODS: We conducted a multihospital based case-control study on 12 cases with the OEIS complex identified in 1,195,020 LB born from January 1978 to December 2015. All comparisons performed were matching 1:3 the relation of cases and controls, respectively, considering the p-value of ≤.05 as statistically significant. RESULTS: The prevalence of OEIS was 1.004/100,000 (1/99,585) LB. The frequency of bladder/cloacal exstrophy was 75 and 25%, respectively, omphalocele was 83.3%, and imperforate anus and spinal defects, 75.0% each. Two pairs of twins discordant for the defect exhibited the severest OEIS phenotype. Except for the higher frequency of maternal first pregnancy trimester influenza infection, early perinatal mortality and a twining trend association, none other variable differed significantly. DISCUSSION: The prevalence of OEIS in our sample is within the highest reported worldwide. First-trimester pregnancy maternal influenza infection and twining emerge as associated risk factors for OEIS. Although twin zygosity was not defined, the observed severest phenotypes in twins endorse the hypothesis that OEIS and monozygotic twinning are features of disturbances on early blastogenesis.

Resumen Para los próximos 100 años se pronostica un incremento en la temperatura del planeta de casi 4 °C, lo cual pondrá en riesgo las especies que no logren adaptarse. En esta investigación se determinaron las respuestas morfofisiológicas de F. mexicana y los cambios en la población de bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno atmosférico (BFN) asociadas a sus raíces, debido a dos condiciones ambientales con diferencias medias de temperatura de 5.1 oC: invernadero (temperatura alta, TA) y campo abierto (temperatura baja, TB); y con cuatro tratamientos: sin inocular (T), inoculadas con la cepa ocho (CP8), cepa cuatro (CP4) y con ambas cepas (CP8 + 4). Las BFN fueron aisladas de la rizosfera de F. mexicana y transformadas genéticamente con reporteros, para cuantificar la población al final del experimento. Se midió el peso seco de la parte aérea y la raíz, la tasa de asimilación de CO2 (A), el inicio de la floración, el número de flores y frutos; y la persistencia de las bacterias fijadoras de N atmosférico (BFN). Además, se evaluó la concentración de NO3, NH4, P y materia orgánica (MO) en el sustrato, al inicio y final del experimento. Las plantas sometidas a alta temperatura presentaron mayor peso seco de la parte aérea y fotosíntesis; con una disminución en el peso seco de la raíz, y en el número de flores y frutos. La MO en el sustrato disminuyó, mientras que la disponibilidad de NO3, NH4 y P aumentó. El incremento de temperatura y la mayor presencia de N en el substrato provocaron reducción en la población de BFN. Estos resultados sugieren que temperaturas altas estimulan el crecimiento de F. mexicana y tienen un impacto negativo sobre su reproducción y en las BFN asociadas a sus raíces.(AU)


Abstract The earth could experience a warming of 4 °C in the next one hundred years. This would put at risk the plants that can´t adapt. Fragaria mexicana is an endemic plant of temperate forest of Mexico. The response of this wild strawberry to temperature increasing has not been studied and could play an important role for event of global warming. This study determinate the morphological and physiological responses of F. mexicana and changes in the N2-fixing bacteria (BFN) population on its roots, due to two environmental conditions with differences of temperature 5.1 °C: greenhouse (high temperature, TA) and open land (low temperature, TB); and with four free-living nitrogen-fixing bacteria (BFN) treatments: non-inoculated (T), inoculated with strain eight (CP8), strain four (CP4), and strains eight and four mixed (CP8 + 4). BFN were isolated from the rhizosphere of F. mexicana and were genetically transformed with reporters to quantify the population at the end of the experiment. NO3, NH4 and P and organic matter (MO) in the substrate were determined at beginning and finish of the experiment. Shoot and root dry weight, photosynthetic rate, flowering and fructification starting, flowers and fruits number, were measured. Shoot dry weight and photosynthetic rate were lower in TB than TA, decreasing 3.1 g and 0.94 µmol m-2 s-1, respectively. Root dry weight was 3.0 g less in TA compared with TB. Number flowers decrease in 40.89 % and number fruits in 38.11 % on TA than TB. F. mexicana plants start flowering 14 days previously in TB than TA. MO in the substrate decrease in TA, while the concentration of NO3, NH4 and P, increased. Population of BFN was lower in TA. Results obtained indicated that higher temperature promotes the growth of F. mexicana and reduce its reproduction and BNF population associated with its roots.(AU)

Una alternativa para el manejo sustentable en el cultivo de Capsicum annuum L. se ha enfocado en el uso de bacterias promotoras del crecimiento vegetal (BPCV) y hongos micorrícicos arbusculares (HMA). Esta investigación seleccionó BPCV y HMA sobre la base de su efecto en plantas de chile Bell Pepper y jalapeño. Se utilizaron 5 cepas bacterianas aisladas de diferentes localidades del estado de México (P61 [Pseudomonas tolaasii], A46 [P. tolaasii], R44 [Bacillus pumilus], BSP1.1 [Paenibacillus sp.] y OLs-Sf5 [Pseudomonas sp.]) y 3 tratamientos con HMA (H1 [consorcio aislado de la rizosfera de chile en el estado de Puebla], H2 [Rhizophagus intraradices]y H3 [consorcio aislado de la rizosfera de limón del estado de Tabasco]). Además, se incluyó un tratamiento fertilizado (solución Steiner 25%) y un testigo absoluto. Plántulas de chile jalapeño «Caloro¼ y pimiento Bell Pepper «California Wonder¼ fueron inoculadas con HMA en el momento de la siembra y con BPCV 15 días después de emerger, y crecidas bajo condiciones de cámara de ambiente controlado. En chile jalapenño, la mejor cepa bacteriana fue P61 y el mejor tratamiento de HMA fue el H1; en Bell Pepper la mejor cepa fue R44 y los mejores HMA fueron el H3 y el H1. Estos microorganismos incrementaron el crecimiento de plántulas de chile jalapenño y Bell Pepper en comparación con el testigo sin fertilizar. Asimismo, P61 y R44 beneficiaron positivamente la capacidad fotosintética del PSII.

BACKGROUND: Mexico is an important global reservoir of biological and cultural richness and traditional knowledge of wild mushrooms. However, there is a high risk of loss of this knowledge due to the erosion of traditional human cultures which is related with the rapid acculturation linked to high migration of rural populations to cities and the U.S.A., and the loss of natural ecosystems. The Mixtec people, the third largest native group in Mexico only after the Nahua and the Maya, maintain ancient traditions in the use and knowledge of wild mushrooms. Paradoxically, there are few studies of the Mixtec ethnomycology. This study shows our ethnomycological research, mainly focused on knowledge and use of wild mushrooms in communities of the Mixteca Alta, in southeastern Mexico. We hypothesized that among the studied communities those with a combination of higher vegetation cover of natural pine and oak forests, lower soil erosion and higher economic margination had a greater richness and knowledge of wild mushrooms. Our study therefore aimed to record traditional knowledge, use, nomenclature and classification of wild mushrooms in four Mixtec communities and to analyze how these aspects vary according to environmental and cultural conditions among the studied communities. METHODS: In order to analyze the cultural significance of wild mushrooms for the Mixtec people, 116 non-structured and semi-structured interviews were performed from 2009 to 2014. Information about the identified species, particularly the regional nomenclature and classification, their edibility, toxicity and ludic uses, the habitat of useful mushrooms, traditional recipes and criteria to differentiate between toxic and edible species, and mechanisms of knowledge transmission were studied. The research had the important particularity that the first author is Mixtec, native of the study area. A comparative qualitative analysis between the richness of fungal species used locally and the official information of the natural vegetation cover, soil erosion and economic marginalization in each of the studied communities was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 106 species of mushrooms were identified growing in pine and oak forest, deciduous tropical forest and grassland; among the identified mushrooms we recorded 26 species locally consumed, 18 considered toxic, 6 having ludic uses and the remaining 56 species not being used in the studied areas but some of them having potential as food (56 species) or medicine (28 species). We recorded that 80, 22 and 4 species are ectomycorrhizal, saprotrophic and parasites, respectively. Our study shows that a complex and accurate knowledge related with the use, nomenclature, classification, ecology, gastronomy of wild mushrooms has been developed by Mixtecs; and that there is a relation between natural vegetation cover, lower soil erosion and higher economic marginalization and richness, knowledge and use of mushrooms in the studied communites. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that conservation and adaptation of ancestral mycological knowledge survives mainly through oral transmition, maintenance of cultural identity, forest protection, preservation native language and also paradoxically through the current socieconomical marginality among the Mixtec people. We also found that those studied communities with a combination of higher vegetation cover of natural pine and oak forests, lower soil erosion and higher economic marginalization showed a greater richness and knowledge of wild mushrooms. Use and sustainable management of wild mushrooms can be an alternative for local integrated development, but local knowledge and traditional worldview should be included into the regional programs of Mixtec biocultural conservation.

ABSTRACT

La colitis pseudomembranosa es una forma grave de diarrea nosocomial y el Clostridium difficile es el agente etiológico más frecuente. La frecuencia de colitis pseudomembranosa aumentó en los últimos años por la amplia utilización de antibióticos. Comúnmente se asocia al uso de beta-lactámicos o clindamicina, pero otros antibióticos también pueden favorecer su aparición. El objetivo fue caracterizar las principales características clínico-epidemiológicas de la colitis pseudomembranosa y su relación con el Clostridium difficile. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica con un total de 26 citas. Se identificaron como factores de riesgo: edad mayor de 60 años, patologías asociadas, inmunodepresión y duración de la estadía hospitalaria. Evitar la administración innecesaria de antibióticos es fundamental para el control de la infección por Clostridium. Para el diagnóstico se utiliza la detección de toxinas y la endoscopia. Actualmente se prefiere al Metronidazol como fármaco de primera elección y se utilizan resinas, bacterioterapia fecal, así como tratamiento quirúrgico de las complicaciones para su tratamiento(AU)


Pseudomembranous colitis is a severe form of nosocomial diarrhea and Clostridium difficile is the most common etiologic agent. The frequency of pseudomembranous colitis has increased in recent years by the widespread use of antibiotics. It is commonly associated with the use of beta-lactam or clindamycin, but other antibiotics may also favor its appearance. To characterize the main clinical and epidemiological characteristics of pseudomembranous colitis and its relationship with the Clostridium difficile. A bibliographic review was conducted with a total of 26 citations. As risk factors we identified: age over 60 years, associated diseases, immunosuppression, and hospital stay time. Avoiding unnecessary use of antibiotics is essential to control Clostridium infection. For diagnosis, detection of toxins and endoscopy are used. Metronidazole and resins currently the preferred first-choice drug, fecal bacterioterapia and surgical treatment of complications for treatment are used(AU)

ABSTRACT

Phytoremediation is an ecologically sound biotechnology directed to cleaning up contaminated soils. The study of tree species to treat petroleum contaminated soils is scarce; moreover, the combination of phytoremediation with bioaugmentation and biostimulation processes is also limited. Thus, this work evaluated the effects of the inoculation of Glomus intraradices, a bacterial consortium (M2BOS1-R2 and M2BOSI-F4) and Trichoderma viride, on the growth of Casuarina equisetifolia, fertilized with Floranid or Triple 17, when sown in a diesel-contaminated soil (7 500mg/kg). The factorial experiment 2x5x3 included 30 treatments with 10 replicates in a completely randomized design under greenhouse conditions for 120 days. Diesel significantly diminished plant height, total biomass, and plant index quality (PIQ). Glomus or bacterial consortium significantly increased plant height, total biomass and PIQ when compared to the inoculation of the three microorganisms or to the control. Floranid had negative effects on plant growth and PIQ at diesel contamination. Fertilization with Triple 17 combined with the three microorganisms stimulated plant growth in the absence of diesel, whereas in the presence of this contaminant the treatments combining Triple 17 with the bacterial consortium or with Trichoderma had better plant growth and PIQ. Mycorrhizal colonization was inhibited due to diesel contamination, and especially when Floranid was applied. The fertilizer Triple 17 (biostimulation) combined with the beneficial microorganisms (bioaugmentation) improved growth responses of C. equisetifolia in diesel-contaminated soil.

La fitorremediación es una biotecnología ecológicamente racional que está dirigida a la limpieza de suelos contaminados; sin embargo, el estudio de especies arbóreas para la fitorremediación de suelos con hidrocarburos del petróleo es limitado. Más aún, la combinación de la fitorremediación con procesos de bioaumentación y bioestimulación es también limitada. Por lo anterior, este estudio evaluó el efecto de la inoculación de Glomus intraradices, un consorcio bacteriano (M2BOS1-R2 y M2BOSI-F4) y Trichoderma viride en el crecimiento de plantas de Casuarina equisetifolia L. fertilizadas con Floranid® o Triple 17, en suelo contaminado con diésel (7 500mg/kg). El experimento factorial 2x5x3 incluyó 30 tratamientos y 10 repeticiones, distribuidos completamente al azar en invernadero, durante 120 días. El diésel disminuyó significativamente la altura, la biomasa total y el índice de calidad (ICP) de planta. Glomus o las bacterias aumentaron significativamente la altura, la biomasa seca total y el ICP con respecto al tratamiento sin inocular o con la triple inoculación. El Floranid redujo el crecimiento vegetal y el ICP, en presencia de diésel. El Triple 17 combinado con los tres microorganismos produjo mayor crecimiento vegetal en ausencia de contaminación, pero en presencia de diésel, el Triple 17 combinado con bacterias o con Trichoderma, estimuló la biomasa seca total y el ICP. La colonización micorrízica fue inhibida por el diesel, especialmente con la fertilización del Floranid. El Triple 17 (bioestimulación) combinado con los microorganismos (bioaumentación), favoreció el crecimiento de Casuarina en suelo contaminado con diésel.

ABSTRACT

La gangrena de Fournier es un padecimiento que afecta primordialmente a adultos. Este hecho lo convierte en un padecimiento raro, dentro del ámbito pediátrico. Por tanto, creemos conveniente informar un caso de gangrena de Fournier ocurrido en un neonato de ocho días de vida, tratado exitosamente mediante desbridación quirúrgica, administración de líquidos y antibióticos.
