ABSTRACT

Smartphone location data provide the most direct field disaster distribution data with low cost and high coverage. The large-scale continuous sampling of mobile device location data provides a new way to estimate the distribution of disasters with high temporal-spatial resolution. On September 5, 2022, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Luding County, Sichuan Province, China. We quantitatively analyzed the Ms 6.8 earthquake from both temporal and geographic dimensions by combining 1,806,100 smartphone location records and 4,856 spatial grid locations collected through communication big data with the smartphone data under 24-hour continuous positioning. In this study, the deviation of multidimensional mobile terminal location data is estimated, and a methodology to estimate the distribution of out-of-service communication base stations in the disaster area by excluding micro error data users is explored. Finally, the mathematical relationship between the seismic intensity and the corresponding out-of-service rate of communication base stations is established, which provides a new technical concept and means for the rapid assessment of post-earthquake disaster distribution.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of stress-induced phosphoprotein 1 (STIP1) in serum for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)-negative HCC (ANHC). METHODS: In this study, serum samples were collected from 158 HCC patients and 63 non-HCC patients. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors associated with HCC and ANHC. The diagnostic values of each index for HCC and ANHC were analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: The STIP1, des-γ-carboxy prothrombin (DCP), and AFP levels were higher in the HCC groups than in the non-HCC groups (P < .05). Age, DCP, STIP1, and hepatitis B virus infection were independent predictors of HCC (P < .05). The diagnostic value of STIP1 for HCC was higher than that of DCP. Additionally, age, STIP1, and hepatitis B virus infection were independent predictors for ANHC patients. The ROC curve exhibited an area under the curve value of 0.919 for STIP1, with a diagnostic cutoff value of 68.5 U/mL. Moreover, 36 ANHC patients and 19 AFP-negative non-HCC patients were included to validate the diagnostic model. A total of 20 patients had STIP1 levels greater than 68.5 U/mL, resulting in diagnostic accuracy of 67.3%, sensitivity of 55.6%, and specificity of 89.5%. CONCLUSION: STIP1 demonstrates excellent diagnostic value for HCC and ANHC.

BACKGROUND: The technical difficulties and trauma of remote access methods in endoscopic surgery (ES) for lateral neck dissection (LND) can be daunting for most patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and surgeons. The purpose of study was to introduce gasless single-incision ES via a subclavicular approach (ESSA) and to explore its safety and efficacy for LND. METHODS: Between January 2022 and February 2023, we retrospectively reviewed 17 patients with PTC who underwent ESSA for LND. In addition, 22 patients who received video-assisted ES (VAES) and 48 patients who underwent open surgery (OP) for LND during the same period were included. Clinicopathological characteristics, complications, and efficacy of the lymph node yield (LNY) were compared between the ESSA and the other two groups (VAES and OP). RESULTS: The LNY from central and lateral neck dissection by ESSA was comparable to that by VAES (9.2 ± 8.1 vs. 9.5 ± 4.2, P = 0.986, and 33.5 ± 11.6 vs. 30.6 ± 9.2, P = 0.382, respectively) and OP (9.2 ± 8.1 vs. 11.0 ± 5.4, P = 0.420, and 33.5 ± 11.6 vs. 31.5 ± 7.9, P = 0.383, respectively). Swallowing impairment scores at 1 and 3 months were significantly lower after ESSA than those after VAES (1.8 ± 1.0 vs. 3.0 ± 1.2, P = 0.003, and 0.9 ± 0.8 vs. 1.7 ± 0.8, P = 0.006, respectively). The cosmetic satisfaction rate 1 month after surgery was significantly higher in the ESSA group than that in the VAES group (100 vs. 31.8%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: ESSA is a safe and minimally invasive procedure that provides a scarless cervical appearance and has good efficacy for LND. Therefore, ESSA may be a feasible choice for selected patients with N1b PTC with cervical cosmetic needs.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Alginate oligosaccharide (AOS), as a natural non-toxic plant extract, has been paid more attention in recent years due to its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and even anti-cancer properties. However, the mechanism by which AOS affects animal reproductive performance is still unclear. Methods: The purpose of this study is to use multi-omics technology to analyze the effects of AOS in extending the service lifespan of aging boars. Results: The results showed that AOS can significantly improve the sperm motility (p < 0.05) and sperm validity rate (p < 0.001) of aging boars and significantly reduce the abnormal sperm rate (p < 0.01) by increasing the protein levels such as CatSper 8 and protein kinase A (PKA) for semen quality. At the same time, AOS significantly improved the testosterone content in the blood of boars (p < 0.01). AOS significantly improved fatty acids such as adrenic acid (p < 0.05) and antioxidants such as succinic acid (p < 0.05) in sperm metabolites, significantly reducing harmful substances such as dibutyl phthalate (p < 0.05), which has a negative effect on spermatogenesis. AOS can improve the composition of intestinal microbes, mainly increasing beneficial bacteria Enterobacter (p = 0.1262) and reducing harmful bacteria such as Streptococcus (p < 0.05), Prevotellaceae_UCG-001 (p < 0.05), and Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, short-chain fatty acids in feces such as acetic acid (p < 0.05) and butyric acid (p < 0.05) were significantly increased. Spearman correlation analysis showed that there was a close correlation among microorganisms, sperm metabolites, and sperm parameters. Discussion: Therefore, the data indicated that AOS improved the semen quality of older boars by improving the intestinal microbiota and sperm metabolome. AOS can be used as a feed additive to solve the problem of high elimination rate in large-scale boar studs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Preoperative evaluation of the metastasis status of lateral lymph nodes (LNs) in papillary thyroid cancer is challenging. Strategies for using deep learning to diagnosis of lateral LN metastasis require additional development and testing. This study aimed to build a deep learning-based model to distinguish benign lateral LNs from metastatic lateral LNs in papillary thyroid cancer and test the model's diagnostic performance in a real-world clinical setting. METHODS: This was a prospective diagnostic study. An ensemble model integrating a three-dimensional residual network algorithm with clinical risk factors available before surgery was developed based on computed tomography images of lateral LNs in an internal dataset and validated in two external datasets. The diagnostic performance of the ensemble model was tested and compared with the results of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) (used as the standard reference method) and the diagnoses made by two senior radiologists in 113 suspicious lateral LNs in patients enrolled prospectively. RESULTS: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the ensemble model for diagnosing suspicious lateral LNs was 0.829 (95% CI: 0.732-0.927). The sensitivity and specificity of the ensemble model were 0.839 (95% CI: 0.762-0.916) and 0.769 (95% CI: 0.607-0.931), respectively. The diagnostic accuracy of the ensemble model was 82.3%. With FNA results as the criterion standard, the ensemble model had excellent diagnostic performance ( P =0.115), similar to that of the two senior radiologists ( P =1.000 and P =0.392, respectively). CONCLUSION: A three-dimensional residual network-based ensemble model was successfully developed for the diagnostic assessment of suspicious lateral LNs and achieved diagnostic performance similar to that of FNA and senior radiologists. The model appears promising for clinical application.

ABSTRACT

We calculate the Casimir interaction between isotropic plates (gold or graphene) and black phosphorus (BP) sheets with Lifshitz theory. It is found that the Casimir force with BP sheets is of the order of α times the perfect metal limit, and α is the fine structure constant. Strong anisotropy of the BP conductivity gives rise to a difference in the Casimir force contribution between the two principal axis. Furthermore, increasing the doping concentration both in BP sheets and graphene sheets can enhance the Casimir force. Moreover, introducing substrate and increased temperature can also enhance the Casimir force, by this way we reveal that the Casimir interaction can be doubled. The controllable Casimir force opens a new avenue for designing next generation devices in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems.

BACKGROUND: Leg weakness affects animal welfare and is one of the primary reasons for culling of boars. Low bone mineral density (BMD) is one of the primary factors contributing to leg weakness. Low BMD also appeared to be associated with severe bone pain and has the highest risk of skeletal fragility. Surprisingly, few studies have been performed on the factors influencing BMD in pigs. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to identify the influencing factors on boar BMD. Herein, the BMD data were determined through the use of ultrasonography from 893 Duroc boars. Logistic regression model was utilized in the analysis of BMD, in which the explanatory variables in the model were lines, ages, body weights, backfat thicknesses and serum mineral element concentrations (Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, Se, Pb and Cd). RESULTS: Results showed that factors significantly influencing BMD included serum Ca, P concentrations, ages and backfat thicknesses (P < 0.05), in which serum Ca concentrations were positively correlated with BMD (P < 0.01), whereas increasing concentrations of serum P decreased BMD (P < 0.01). The serum Ca/P ratio showed significant quadratic effects on BMD (r = 0.28, P < 0.01), and the Ca/P ratio to achieve the best BMD was determined to be 3.7. Furthermore, BMD also changed with age quadratically (r = 0.40, P < 0.01), and reached a peak value around 47 months. Interestingly, a quadratic (r = 0.26, P < 0.01) increase in the BMD was observed as backfat thickness increased, and the inflection point was calculated at around 17 mm. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, BMD characteristics of boars could be detected by ultrasonic method, and serum Ca, serum P, age, and backfat thickness contributed to the greatest effect on BMD.

Background: Ambulatory thyroid surgery has been increasingly performed in recent years. However, the feasibility of the ambulatory transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) has not been evaluated. We aimed to evaluate the safety, economy, and mental health outcomes of ambulatory TOETVA. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of patients who underwent TOETVA between March 2019 and August 2022. The procedure was performed by a skilled surgical team from the Department of Thyroid Surgery of the affiliated Yantai Yuhuangding Hospital of Qingdao University. Patients were enrolled in the ambulatory (n=166) and conventional (n=290) groups, based on their chosen procedure. We analyzed patients' clinical characteristics, surgical outcomes, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) scores, and hospitalization costs. Results: Of 456 patients, 166 underwent ambulatory TOETVA and 290 underwent conventional TOETVA. No significant differences were found in clinical and surgical characteristics between the groups, including sex (P=0.363), age (P=0.077), body mass index (P=0.351), presence of internal diseases (P=0.613), presence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (P=0.429), pathology (P=0.362), maximum tumor diameter (P=0.520), scope of surgery (P=0.850), or operative time (P=0.351). There were no significant differences in maximum tumor diameter (P=0.349), extrathyroidal tissue invasion (P=0.516), number of retrieved central lymph nodes (P=0.069), or metastatic central lymph nodes (P=0.897) between the groups. No significant differences were found in complications, including transient hypoparathyroidism (P=0.438), transient vocal cord palsy (P=0.876), transient mental nerve injury (P=0.749), permanent mental nerve injury (P=0.926), and other complications (P=1.000). Ambulatory patients had shorter hospital stays (P<0.001) and reduced hospitalization costs (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in HAM-A scores between the groups (P=0.056). Conclusions: Ambulatory TOETVA is a safe, feasible, and cost-effective procedure for selected patients. This procedure resulted in shorter hospital stays, decreased medical costs, and did not increase patient anxiety. To ensure patient safety, surgical teams must inform patients of the indications, when to seek help, and how to receive the fastest medical attention.

ABSTRACT

The phytohormones abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellic acid (GA) antagonistically control the shift between seed dormancy and its alleviation. DELAY OF GERMINATION1 (DOG1) is a critical regulator that determines the intensity of primary seed dormancy, but its underlying regulatory mechanism is unclear. In this study, we combined physiological, biochemical, and genetic approaches to reveal that a bHLH transcriptional factor WRKY36 progressively silenced DOG1 expression to break seed dormancy through ABI5-BINDING PROTEIN 2 (AFP2) as the negative regulator of ABA signal. AFP2 interacted with WRKY36, which recognizes the W-BOX in the DOG1 promoter to suppress its expression; Overexpressing WRKY36 broke primary seed dormancy, whereas wrky36 mutants showed strong primary seed dormancy. In addition, AFP2 recruited the transcriptional corepressor TOPLESS-RELATED PROTEIN2 (TPR2) to reduce histone acetylation at the DOG1 locus, ultimately mediating WRKY36-dependent inhibition of DOG1 expression to break primary seed dormancy. Our result proposes that the WRKY36-AFP2-TPR2 module progressively silences DOG1 expression epigenetically, thereby fine-tuning primary seed dormancy.

ABSTRACT

The effects of age, body weight (BW), and backfat thickness (BF) of replacement gilts at first estrus and first mating on their subsequent reproductive performance and retention of their first 2 parities as sows was evaluated. A total of 3,025 Danish replacement gilts were categorized by farm (allocated to 4 farms), cross combination, age, BW and BF at first estrus and first mating, estrous cycle number at first mating, and flush feeding before first mating. The result shows that all the factors mentioned above were significantly associated with reproductive performance and retention rates of the first 2 parities. Farm 3 had more piglets born alive per litter (BA) (P < 0.05). Farms 3 and 4 had more healthy piglets per litter (HP) (P < 0.05). Farm 4 had the most piglets weaned per litter (PW) (P < 0.05). Landrace × Landrace × Yorkshire (L × L × Y) replacement gilts had the most total piglets born per litter (TB), BA, HP, PW and a higher retention rate of the 2 parities than Landrace × Yorkshire (L × Y) replacement gilts (P < 0.05). In addition, flush feeding before first mating had the most TB, BA, HP, PW, and a higher retention rate of the 2 parities than no flush feeding (P < 0.05). Because the effects of replacement gilts rearing parameters on reproductive performance traits differed, we used 100 replacement gilts as a unit and the total number of weaned piglets from the first 2 parities as a new index. Replacement gilts undergoing their first estrus between 180 and 210 d of age at 115 to 124.9 kg BW and 14 to 15 mm BF had significantly higher reproductive indexes for their first 2 parities per 100 replacement gilts. Replacement gilts that mated between 210 and 230 d of age at 140 to 149.9 kg BW and 15 to 16 mm BF had optimal reproductive indexes. These results provide a new insight into the complex relationships among these reproductive performance traits and may help guide successful management of replacement gilts as a pivotal starting point for future fertility and longevity of rearing herds.

Taxifolin (TAX), as a natural flavonoid, has been widely focused on due to its strong anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-virus, and even anti-tumor activity. However, the effect of TAX on semen quality was unknown. The purpose of this study was to analyze the beneficial influences of adding feed additive TAX to boar semen in terms of its quality and potential mechanisms. We discovered that TAX increased sperm motility significantly in Duroc boars by the elevation of the protein levels such as ZAG, PKA, CatSper, and p-ERK for sperm quality. TAX increased the blood concentration of testosterone derivatives, antioxidants such as melatonin and betaine, unsaturated fatty acids such as DHA, and beneficial amino acids such as proline. Conversely, TAX decreased 10 different kinds of bile acids in the plasma. Moreover, TAX increased "beneficial" microbes such as Intestinimonas, Coprococcus, Butyrivibrio, and Clostridium_XlVa at the Genus level. However, TAX reduced the "harmful" intestinal bacteria such as Prevotella, Howardella, Mogibacterium, and Enterococcus. There was a very close correlation between fecal microbes, plasma metabolites, and semen parameters by the spearman correlation analysis. Therefore, the data suggest that TAX increases the semen quality of Duroc boars by benefiting the gut microbes and blood metabolites. It is supposed that TAX could be used as a kind of feed additive to increase the semen quality of boars to enhance production performance.

ABSTRACT

Alginate oligosaccharides (AOS), natural polymers from brown seaweeds (such as Laminaria japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, and Sargassum fusiforme), have been reported to possess many beneficial advantages for health. In the current study, after 9 weeks of dietary supplementation, AOS 10 mg/kg group (AOS 10) group increased boar sperm motility from 87.8% to 93.5%, p < 0.05. Moreover, AOS10 increased the relative abundances of Bifidobacterium, Coprococcus, Butyricicoccus (1.3-2.3-fold; p < 0.05) to increase the beneficial blood and sperm metabolites (1.2-1.6-fold; p < 0.05), and important sperm proteins such as gelsolin, Zn-alpha2 glycoprotein, Cation Channel Sperm-Associated Protein, outer dense fiber of sperm tails, etc. (1.5-2.2-fold; p < 0.05). AOS had a long-term beneficial advantage on boar semen quality by the increase in semen volume (175 vs. 160 ml/ejaculation, p < 0.05). AOS may be used as dietary additives for improving semen quality.

ABSTRACT

Background: Use of the novel transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is increasing worldwide. Although several studies have compared safety and efficacy of TOETVA and other approaches, most focused on comparisons in the context of unilateral thyroidectomy. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare the safety and surgical completeness of TOETVA with conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) undergoing total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection. Methods: The medical records of patients who underwent TOETVA or COT by a single surgeon between June 2017 and October 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were diagnosed with PTC and underwent total thyroidectomy with central neck dissection. Propensity score-matching (PSM) was used to reduce potential selection bias and to adjust for differences in baseline clinicopathological characteristics. Results: After PSM, 84 (TOETVA: 28; COT: 56) patients remained in the study population. There were no significant differences in sex, mean age, combined thyroiditis, tumor size, capsule invasion, tumor multifocality in the same lobe, or tumor location between the groups. Operative time was longer (190.54 ± 28.26 vs. 123.93 ± 29.78 min, P<0.001), while postoperative drainage volume (161.07 ± 225.30 vs. 71.16 ± 28.56 ml, P=0.045) was greater, in the TOETVA group than in the COT group. The groups exhibited no significant differences in the mean number of central lymph nodes retrieved (9.39 ± 4.01 vs. 10.71 ± 5.17, P=0.202), mean number of metastatic central lymph nodes (1.36 ± 1.93 vs. 1.77 ± 2.31, P=0.421), postoperative mean thyroglobulin levels (0.08 ± 0.24 vs. 0.10 ± 0.27, P=0.686), rate of transient hypoparathyroidism (TOETVA: 67.9% vs. COT: 66.1%, P=0.870), rate of transient vocal cord palsy (TOETVA: 0% vs. COT: 1.8%, P=1.000), or other complications (TOETVA: 3.6% vs. COT: 0%, P=0.333). Conclusions: TOETVA is a safe approach in select patients with PTC and exhibits similar efficacy to COT in terms of surgical completeness.

BACKGROUND: Over the past years, antibiotic growth promoter had been restricted in animal husbandry production in many countries because of antimicrobial resistance and foodborne antibiotic residues. However, the problems of poor intestinal health and low growth efficiency of piglets have not been solved completely in an antibiotic-free diet, and it is urgent to explore alternatives to antimicrobial growth promoters. METHODS: Here, a total of 532 weaned pigs were assigned to one of 4 treatments, the low amino acid (AA) level diet (d 1 to d 14 is 1.35%, d 15 to d 42 is 1.25%) (Low AA), the low AA level diet supplementation with a carvacrol-thymol blend (50 mg carvacrol and 50 mg thymol/kg of diet) (CB) (Low AA+CB), the high AA level diet (d 1 to d 14 is 1.50%, d 15 to d 42 is 1.40%) (High AA), and the high AA level diet supplementation with a CB (High AA+CB), respectively. Then we measured growth performance and intestinal health indicators of weaned pigs. RESULTS: Results showed that high AA level significantly reduced plasma urea nitrogen, plasma Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and fecal lipocalin-2 contents (P <  0.05), significantly increased the relative abundance of fecal Lactobacillus and Enterococcus, and had a trend to increase the fecal secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) and mucin 2 (MUC 2) contents (P <  0.05) in piglets, thereby alleviating the diarrhea of piglets and reducing the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of piglets during d 1~14 after weaning. Dietary supplementation with CB significantly increased the activity of plasma antioxidant enzymes T-SOD and GSH-px (P <  0.05), while significantly reduced plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), plasma interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), plasma endotoxin and D-lactic acid contents (P <  0.05). Meanwhile, CB significantly decreased fecal lipocalin-2 contents and the abundance of fecal Escherichia coli (P < 0.05). Thus, we hypothesis that dietary supplementation with CB significantly increased the average daily gain (ADG) of piglets (P < 0.05) during d 1~14 after weaning through promoting intestinal health. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that high AA level and dietary supplementation with CB improved the growth performance of weaned pigs in an antibiotic-free diet by improving AA metabolism and intestinal antioxidant capacity.

ABSTRACT

We studied the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 (LSB) supplemented to lactating sows on reproductive traits and farrowing duration and to piglets from day 7 of life on post-weaning performance and IgG concentration. Ninety-six Landrace × Yorkshire sows started the trial 5 days before the expected farrowing date. Sows were distributed into 2 groups according to parity number and backfat thickness: control (CON: regular lactation diet) and LSB (CON + LSB at 2 × 109 colony forming units [CFU]/kg of feed). Seven days after birth, litters were randomly selected from each group and supplemented creep feed with or without LSB at 2 × 109 CFU/kg. At weaning, piglets from CON sows were shifted to a commercial farm and allocated to 14 pens in groups of 25 piglets/pen according to the creep feed supplemented during lactation. Piglets followed a 3-phase feeding program: creep, pre-starter and starter, with or without LSB at 2 × 109 CFU/kg LSB in creep and pre-starter, and 1 × 109 CFU/kg LSB in starter. The piglets were vaccinated against classical swine fever on days 41 and 72 of life. One day before each vaccination and at the end of the trial, blood samples were collected from 15 randomly selected piglets per treatment and assessed for total IgG. Supplemented sows with non-supplemented litters displayed the lowest backfat thickness loss during lactation (p < 0.05). The LSB supplementation shortened farrowing duration (p < 0.05) and increased feed intake (p < 0.05) during the first week of lactation. The LSB-fed piglets were heavier at the end of creep (p < 0.05), pre-starter (p < 0.05), and the trial (p < 0.05); grew faster during creep (p < 0.05), starter (p < 0.05), and overall (p < 0.05); and displayed an improved feed conversion ratio during creep (p < 0.05). Total IgG content was higher at days 40 (p < 0.05) and 71 (p < 0.05) in LSB-fed piglets. We conclude that supplementing sows with Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 from late gestation until weaning shortens farrowing duration, increases feed intake, and minimizes backfat losses during lactation. When supplemented to piglet diet, post-weaning performance is improved. This improvement observed could be linked to a better immune status, as suggested by the higher IgG.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to compare the surgical safety and outcomes of the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) and gasless endoscopic thyroidectomy transaxillary approach (GETTA). This retrospective study assessed 150 patients managed with the TOETVA at the Yantai Yuhuangding hospital and 150 patients managed via the GETTA at the Zhenjiang Provincial People's Hospital. The procedures were compared in terms of workspace creation time, operating time, complications, post-operative complaints, cosmetic satisfaction, and the efficacy of central neck lymph-node dissection. There was no significant between-group difference in terms of post-operative complications. The average workspace creation and operating times were significantly shorter for GETTA than for TOETVA (P values for both < 0.001). The average number of lymph nodes dissected from the central compartment of the neck was higher in the TOETVA group than in the GETTA group (7.2 ± 4.6 vs. 3.9 ± 3.0, P < 0.001). The mean swallowing impairment index-6 scores at 1 month were significantly lower in the GETTA group than in the TOETVA group (1.5 ± 1.2 vs 2.6 ± 1.4, P < 0.001). Over 97% of all patients (both groups) were either satisfied or very satisfied with the cervical cosmetic outcomes at 3 months post-surgery (P = 0.099). TOETVA and GETTA are both safe procedures with good cervical cosmetic outcomes for well-selected patients. Although TOETVA is more efficacious in terms of central lymph nodes dissection, GETTA has a greater time-cost advantage.

ABSTRACT

The uptake and metabolism of methionine (Met) are critical for epigenetic regulation, redox homeostasis, and embryo development. Our previous study showed that appropriate supplementation of dietary Met promoted the birth weight and placental angiogenesis of high-prolific sows. To further explore the metabolic effect of Met on pregnant sows, we have evaluated the influence of dietary Met level on Met metabolism, and the relationship between metabolites of Met and reproductive performance, antioxidant ability, and placental angiogenesis throughout the gestation of high-prolific sows. Sixty sows (the 3rd parity, Large White) were randomly divided into 5 groups that were fed diets with standardized ileal digestible (SID) methionine-to-lysine (Met:Lys) ratios of 0.27 (control), 0.32, 0.37, 0.42, and 0.47 from the mating day (gestational d 0, G0d) until the farrowing day. HPLC-MS/MS analysis was used to simultaneously evaluate the metabolites related to Met, e.g. S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), homocysteine (Hcy), cysteine (Cys), and glutathione (GSH). The concentration of SAM and SAH in plasma had significant fluctuations, especially in late pregnancy. Increasing dietary Met supplementation significantly improved the plasma SAM and methylation potential (SAM-to-SAH ratio) at d 114 of pregnancy (G114d). Moreover, a positive association of the plasma SAM concentration at G114d was observed with the litter weight of born alive (P < 0.05; R 2 = 0.58). Furthermore, Hcy concentration in plasma was at the lowest level for 0.37 ratio group at G114d. However, it significantly increased during late pregnancy. Moreover, there were negative correlations between plasma Hcy concentration at G114d (P < 0.05) and the placental vascular density in the fold and stroma (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) in the placenta tissue of 0.37 ratio group increased significantly (P < 0.05). Collectively, these findings indicate that dietary Met:Lys ratio (0.37 to 0.57) in the pregnant diet dose not influence the antioxidant ability of the high-prolific sows; however, the improvement of fetal development and placental angiogenesis of high-prolific sows by supplementation of Met are closely associated to the key Met-related metabolite of SAM and Hcy, respectively.

Background: Recurrent nodal disease often occurs in recurrent laryngeal nerve inlet zone (RLNIZ), leading to difficult surgical management. Methods: Medical records of 947 patients with PTC and 33 patients with recurrent PTC were retrospectively reviewed. Totally 169 sides of RLNIZ dissection in 152 patients (17 cases were bilateral and 135 cases were unilateral) with primary surgery and 4 patients with structural recurrent disease were included for the analysis. Results: The rate of lymph node metastasis in RLNIZ was 31.3% (47/150). The incidence of transient hypoparathyroidism was 5.9% and no RLN injury and permanent hypoparathyroidism occurred. RLNIZ lymph nodes metastasis (LNM) was significantly associated with age <45 years, larger tumor size, number of CNLNM, and lateral node metastasis. CNLNM and lateral node metastasis were independent risk factors for RLNIZ LNM. Recurrent nodal disease in RLNIZ was identified in four of 33 patients and permanent recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury was observed in one of four patients. Conclusion: Lymph nodes in RLNIZ are usually involved in patients with heavy tumor burden and can be removed safely at initial surgery. Once central or lateral LNM was confirmed preoperatively or intraoperatively, RLNIZ lymph node dissection should be carefully performed to reduce the rate of structural recurrence in the central compartment.

ABSTRACT

The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) can lead to abnormal sensorimotor changes in the lower lip and chin because of its incision design. This study aimed to explore the surgical outcomes of these changes after TOETVA. A total of 122 patients who underwent TOETVA were reviewed. The original incision design was used for the 39 patients in group A and a modified incision design was used for the 83 patients in group B. The sensorimotor changes in the lower lip and chin were compared. Varying degrees of paresthesia of the lower lip and chin (PoLC) were noted in all group A patients. Approximately 20.5% of group B patients did not suffer from PoLC, and the degree of PoLC in group B was significantly lower (P < 0.001). Abnormal motor function of the lower lip was noted for 23.1% of the patients in group A and 2.4% of those in group B. The incision design plays an important role in the morbidity of sensorimotor changes in the lower lip and chin. Our modified incision design seems minimally invasive and feasible for patients who undergo TOETVA.

ABSTRACT

MAPbI3, one of the archetypical metal halide perovskites, is an exciting semiconductor for a variety of optoelectronic applications. The photoexcited charge-carrier diffusion and recombination are important metrics in optoelectronic devices. Defects in grain interiors and boundaries of MAPbI3 films cause significant nonradiative recombination energy losses. Besides defect impact, carrier diffusion and recombination anisotropy introduced by structural and electronic discrepancies related to the crystal orientation are vital topics. Here, large-sized MAPbI3 single crystals (SCs) were grown, with the (110), (112), (100), and (001) crystal planes simultaneously exposed through the adjusting ratios of PbI2 to methylammonium iodide (MAI). Such MAPbI3 SCs exhibit a weak n-type semiconductor character, and the Fermi levels of these planes were slightly different, causing a homophylic p-n junction at crystal ledges. Utilizing MAPbI3 SCs, the photoexcited carrier diffusion and recombination within the crystal planes and around the crystal ledges were investigated through time-resolved fluorescence microscope. It is revealed that both the (110) and (001) planes were facilitated to be exposed with more MAI in the growth solutions, and the photoluminescence (PL) of these planes manifesting a red-shift, longer carrier lifetime, and diffusion length compared with the (100) and (112) planes. A longer carrier diffusion length promoted photorecycling. However, excessive MAI-assisted grown MAPbI3 SCs could increase the radiative recombination. In addition, it revealed that the carrier excited within the (001) and (112) planes was inclined to diffuse toward each other and was favorable to be extracted out of the grain boundaries or crystal ledges.
