ABSTRACT

Stem cell therapy serves as an effective treatment for bone regeneration. Nevertheless, stem cells from bone marrow and peripheral blood are still lacking homologous properties. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are derived from neural crest, in coincidence with maxillofacial tissues, thus attracting great interest in in situ maxillofacial regenerative medicine. However, insufficient number and heterogenous alteration of seed cells retard further exploration of DPSC-based tissue engineering. Electric stimulation has recently attracted great interest in tissue regeneration. In this study, a novel DPSC-loaded conductive hydrogel microspheres integrated with wireless electric generator is fabricated. Application of exogenous electric cues can promote stemness maintaining and heterogeneity suppression for unpredictable differentiation of encapsulated DPSCs. Further investigations observe that electric signal fine-tunes regenerative niche by improvement on DPSC-mediated paracrine pattern, evidenced by enhanced angiogenic behavior and upregulated anti-inflammatory macrophage polarization. By wireless electric stimulation on implanted conductive hydrogel microspheres, loaded DPSCs facilitates the construction of immuno-angiogenic niche at early stage of tissue repair, and further contributes to advanced autologous mandibular bone defect regeneration. This novel strategy of DPSC-based tissue engineering exhibits promising translational and therapeutic potential for autologous maxillofacial tissue regeneration.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the trajectories of perinatal depression and their relationship with length of hospital stay (LOS), hospitalization costs, and adverse maternal and infantile outcomes. This longitudinal observational study included 525 participants. Perinatal depressive symptoms were assessed at four waves (from the first trimester to the postpartum period). LOS, hospitalization costs, and adverse maternal (sleep, fatigue, anxiety, perceived stress, and memory problems) and infantile outcomes of participants were obtained from medical records and self-reported questionnaires. Trajectories of perinatal depressive symptoms were explored with latent class growth analysis. Associations between trajectories and adverse maternal and infant outcomes were explored with multiple linear regression and binary logistic regression models. The participants' average age was 29.6 ± 3.9 years. Five heterogeneous developmental trajectories of perinatal depressive symptoms were identified as follows: high-level (7.05%), moderate-increasing (12%), remission (15.05%), moderate-level (37.14%), and low-level (28.76%). The average LOS was 5.78 ± 2.13 days, and the average hospitalization costs were 12,695.27 ± 5457.51 yuan. Compared with the trajectory of low-level depressive symptoms, the LOS, hospitalization costs, and likelihood of adverse outcomes of women with high-level and moderate-increasing depressive symptom trajectories increased. The findings capture the heterogeneity of perinatal depression in Chinese women. Women in the moderate-increasing and high-level trajectory groups had longer LOS, more hospitalization costs, and poor birth outcomes. Elucidating the trajectories of perinatal depression and their relationship with maternal and infant health outcomes provides important insights into the development of person-centred care planning for women during pregnancy and postpartum.

ABSTRACT

Mimicking the temporal pattern of biological behaviors during the natural repair process is a promising strategy for biomaterial-mediated tissue regeneration. However, precise regulation of dynamic cell behaviors allocated in a microenvironment post-implantation remains challenging until now. Here, remote tuning of electric cues is accomplished by wireless ultrasound stimulation (US) on an electroactive membrane for bone regeneration under a diabetic background. Programmable electric cues mediated by US from the piezoelectric membrane achieve the temporal regulation of macrophage polarization, satisfying the pattern of immunoregulation during the natural healing process and effectively promoting diabetic bone repair. Mechanistic insight reveals that the controllable decrease in AKT2 expression and phosphorylation could explain US-mediated macrophage polarization. This study exhibits a strategy aimed at precisely biosimulating the temporal regenerative pattern by controllable and programmable electric output for optimized diabetic tissue regeneration and provides basic insights into bionic design-based precision medicine achieved by intelligent and external field-responsive biomaterials.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to explore coping strategy profiles used by frontline medical workers and the psychological stress reactions associated with each category, in the COVID-19 pandemic context. Participants were 651 frontline medical workers recruited between February and March 2020. Psychological stress reactions (e.g., anxiety, depression) and coping strategies were assessed and analyzed using latent profile analysis and linear regression. Participants had three coping strategy profiles: coping inadequately (28.9%), coping appropriately (64.4%), and coping excessively (6.7%). Compared with coping appropriately, those who coped inadequately and excessively had higher psychological stress reactions levels. Levels of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder in excessive-coping individuals were higher than those who coped inadequately. Our findings elucidate the effectiveness of different coping strategy profiles and provide insights for developing targeted interventions to mitigate stress among medical workers. In light of these results, we recommend implementing stress management programs tailored to specific coping strategy profiles.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The advent of bigdata era fundamentally transformed the nature of medical information seeking and the traditional binary medical relationship. Weaving stress coping theory and information processing theory, we developed an integrative perspective on information seeking behavior and explored the antecedent and consequence of such behavior. Methods: Data were collected from 573 women suffering from infertility who was seeking assisted reproductive technology treatment in China. We used AMOS 22.0 and the PROCESS macro in SPSS 25.0 software to test our model. Results: Our findings demonstrated that patients' satisfaction with information received from the physicians negatively predicted their behavior involvement in information seeking, such behavior positively related to their perceived information overload, and the latter negatively related to patient-physician relationship quality. Further findings showed that medical information seeking behavior and perceived information overload would serially mediate the impacts of satisfaction with information received from physicians on patient-physician relationship quality. Discussion: This study extends knowledge of information seeking behavior by proposing an integrative model and expands the application of stress coping theory and information processing theory. Additionally, it provides valuable implications for patients, physicians and public health information service providers.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Acupotomy based on the meridian-sinew theory of traditional Chinese medicine has benefits in treating knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The current study aims to prove that acupotomy at the sinew points of Sanheyang protect the knee joint and alleviate the progression of moderate KOA by evaluating KOA symptoms, cartilage structure, and analyzing the changes of cytokines in rabbit cartilage. Methods: The model used was mono-iodoacetate-induced moderate KOA in the rabbit's right leg. Rabbits were divided into the model group, the acupotomy group, and the control group, with each group receiving two parts of treatment for 2 weeks and 4 weeks. We evaluated pain in the knee joint and range of motion. The articular cartilage sections were stained with Safranin O/Fast Green and Masson. We used immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR to detect the protein and mRNA expressions of collagen prototype II (COL-II), matrix metalloproteinase 13 (MMP13), and integrin-ß1 (ITG-ß1). Results: Compared with the model group, the acupotomy group had higher body weight, lower pain score, higher range of motion, lower Mankin score, and significantly lower protein and mRNA expression of MMP13. After 4 weeks of treatment, Col-II expression in the acupotomy group was significantly higher than that in the model group and the expression of ITG-ß1 in the model group was abnormally increased. Conclusion: Acupotomy at Sanheyang improved the pain symptoms and range of joint motion in rabbits with moderate KOA, and could protect Col-II by regulating MMP13, which may be related to ITG-ß1-mediated mechanical force transmission, thus reducing the damage to cartilage structure and delaying the progression of moderate KOA.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become a serious threat to human health. Bone regeneration deficiency and nonunion caused by DM is perceived as a worldwide epidemic, with a very high socioeconomic impact on public health. Here, we find that targeted activation of retinoic acid-related orphan receptor α (RORα) by SR1078 in the early stage of bone defect repair can significantly promote in situ bone regeneration of DM rats. Bone regeneration relies on the activation of macrophage RORα in the early bone repair, but RORα of DM rats fails to upregulation as hyperglycemic inflammatory microenvironment induced IGF1-AMPK signalling deficiency. Mechanistic investigations suggest that RORα is vital for macrophage-induced migration and proliferation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) via a CCL3/IL-6 depending manner. In summary, our study identifies RORα expressed in macrophages during the early stage of bone defect repair is crucial for in situ bone regeneration, and offers a novel strategy for bone regeneration therapy and fracture repair in DM patients.

Exposure to artificial light at night (LAN) can induce obesity, depressive disorder and osteoporosis, but the pernicious effects of excessive LAN exposure on tissue structure are poorly understood. Here, we demonstrated that artificial LAN can impair developmental growth plate cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) formation and cause endoplasmic reticulum (ER) dilation, which in turn compromises bone formation. Excessive LAN exposure induces downregulation of the core circadian clock protein BMAL1, which leads to collagen accumulation in the ER. Further investigations suggest that BMAL1 is the direct transcriptional activator of prolyl 4-hydroxylase subunit alpha 1 (P4ha1) in chondrocytes, which orchestrates collagen prolyl hydroxylation and secretion. BMAL1 downregulation induced by LAN markedly inhibits proline hydroxylation and transport of collagen from ER to golgi, thereby inducing ER stress in chondrocytes. Restoration of BMAL1/P4HA1 signaling can effectively rescue the dysregulation of cartilage formation within the developmental growth plate induced by artificial LAN exposure. In summary, our investigations suggested that LAN is a significant risk factor in bone growth and development, and a proposed novel strategy targeting enhancement of BMAL1-mediated collagen hydroxylation could be a potential therapeutic approach to facilitate bone growth.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We investigated differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in human glioblastoma U87 cells after treatment with hederagenin as a therapeutic screening mechanism and provided a theoretical basis for hederagenin in treating glioblastoma. METHODS: The Cell Counting Kit 8 assay was used to analyze the inhibitory effect of hederagenin on the proliferation of U87 cells. Protein was identified by tandem mass tags and LC-MS/MS analysis techniques. Annotation of DEPs, Gene Ontology enrichment and function, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways and domains were all examined by bioinformatics. According to the TMT results, hub protein was selected from DEPs for WB verification. RESULTS: Protein quantitative analysis found 6522 proteins in total. Compared with the control group, 43 DEPs (P < 0.05) were involved in the highly enriched signaling pathway in the hederagenin group, among which 20 proteins were upregulated, and 23 proteins were downregulated. These different proteins are mainly involved in the longness regulating pathway-WORM, the hedgehog signaling pathway, Staphylococcus aureus infection, complement, coagulation cascades, and mineral absorption. KIF7 and ATAD2B expression were significantly down-regulated and PHEX and TIMM9 expression were significantly upregulated, according to WB analysis, supporting the TMT findings. CONCLUSION: Hederagenin inhibition of GBM U87 cells may be related to KIF7, which is mainly involved in the hedgehog signaling pathway. Our findings lay a foundation for additional study of the therapeutic mechanism of hederagenin.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly worldwide since its discovery in December 2019. Research published since the COVID-19 outbreak has focused on whether semen quality and reproductive hormone levels are affected by COVID-19. However, there is limited evidence on semen quality of uninfected men. This study aimed to compare semen parameters among uninfected Chinese sperm donors before and after the COVID-19 pandemic to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic-related stress and lifestyle changes on uninfected men. RESULTS: All semen parameters were non-significant except semen volume. The average age of sperm donors was higher after the COVID-19 (all P < 0.05). The average age of qualified sperm donors increased from 25.9 (SD: 5.3) to 27.6 (SD: 6.0) years. Before the COVID-19, 45.0% qualified sperm donors were students, but after the COVID-19, 52.9% were physical laborers (P < 0.05). The proportion of qualified sperm donors with a college education dropped from 80.8 to 64.4% after the COVID-19 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Although the sociodemographic characteristics of sperm donors changed after the COVID-19 pandemic, no decline in semen quality was found. There is no concern about the quality of cryopreserved semen in human sperm banks after the COVID-19 pandemic.


RéSUMé: CONTEXTE: La maladie due au Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) s'est propagée rapidement dans le monde entier depuis sa découverte en décembre 2019. Les recherches publiées depuis l'éclosion de la COVID-19 se sont concentrées sur la question de savoir si la qualité du sperme et les niveaux d'hormones reproductives étaient affectés par la COVID-19. Il existe, cependant, peu de preuves sur la qualité du sperme des hommes non infectés. Cette étude visait à comparer, avant et après la pandémie de COVID-19, les paramètres du sperme chez les donneurs de sperme Chinois non infectés, afin de déterminer l'impact du stress lié à la pandémie de COVID-19 et aux changements de mode de vie sur les hommes non infectés. RéSULTATS: Toutes les valeurs des paramètres du sperme étaient non significatives, à l'exception du volume de sperme. L'âge moyen des donneurs de sperme était plus élevé après la COVID-19 (tous p < 0,05). L'âge moyen des donneurs de sperme admissibles est passé de 25,9 ans (ET : 5,3) à 27,6 ans (ET : 6,0). La proportion de donneurs de sperme admissibles ayant fait des études secondaires est passée de 80,8 % à 64,4 % après la COVID-19 (p < 0,05). CONCLUSION: Bien que les caractéristiques sociodémographiques des donneurs de sperme aient changé après la pandémie de COVID-19, aucune baisse de la qualité du sperme n'a été constatée. Il n'y a aucune préoccupation quant à la qualité du sperme cryoconservé dans les banques de sperme humain après la pandémie de COVID-19. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationship between the anxiety and depressive trajectory of women conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ART) and their children's emotional and behavioral problems. METHODS: This prospective cohort study including 18,711 women, was conducted between July 2014 and December 2017. Self-rating scales for anxiety and depression were used before treatment, during the first trimester, and two to three years postpartum. A latent class growth analysis identified their maternal anxiety and depressive symptom trajectories. Multiple comparison and linear regression models were performed to assess the relationships between maternal trajectories and their offspring's emotional and behavioral problems. RESULTS: Three longitudinal heterogeneous trajectories of maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms were identified: resilient, recurrent, and emergent. After adjusting for covariates, children with mothers in the recurrent and emergent trajectory groups had higher Child Behavior Checklist/2-3 scores. Additionally, the participants with a recurrent trajectory had lower education and employment levels and younger maternal age at delivery. They also had a history of ovarian surgery, primipara, secondary infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, and more embryo transferred cycles, including intracytoplasmic sperm injections. Those with resilient trajectories had higher antral follicle counts and GnRH antagonist protocol. Finally, the participants with emergent trajectories had a lower monthly income, primipara, ectopic pregnancy, and fresh embryo transfers. CONCLUSIONS: Infertile women's psychological stress was not alleviated by the ART-sociodemographic, infertility-related and treatment-related characteristics determined three mental health trajectories. Children with mothers in recurrent and emergent trajectories showed higher odds of experiencing emotional and behavioral problems.

ABSTRACT

After emergency surgery for intestinal obstruction caused by colorectal cancer, postoperative ileus (POI) is more likely to occur in the early-stage oral intake. POI incited the occurrence of postoperative complications and prolongs hospital stay. Reducing the occurrence of POI will Enhance Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). AIM: The aim of this study is to observe and evaluate the preventive effect of postoperative oral administration of 76% Meglumine Diatrizoate in reducing the incidence of POI and promoting intestinal absorption during the recovery of intestinal peristalsis in patients after intestinal obstruction surgery. METHODS: From October 2018 to December 2021, 94 patients (47 vs 47) with intestinalobstruction were rolled. Patients with an ASA score of 4 or higher and gastrointestinal perforation with peritonitis were excluded. After 24 hours of surgery, the patients were divided into experimental group and control group disposed of with an opaque airtight envelope method, patient-side single blind. After intestinal peristalsis recovery (2.45 ± 0.62 d vs 2.60 ± 0.68 d, P > 0.05), the experimental group was given 76% Meglumine Diatrizoate 20 ml orally 9am and the control group was given 10% glucose 20 ml for three consecutive days. POI cases, the time taken to achieve full daily oral calorie and discharge days were counted. RESULTS: The time required to achieve full daily oral calorie (11.04 ± 2.70 d vs 14.09 ± 3.74 d, p < 0.05), POI cases (10/47 vs 20/47, p < 0.05) and discharge days (14.00 ± 4.89 d vs 16.77 ± 5.94 d, p < 0.05) are significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Oral 76% Meglumine Diatrizoate is safe and effective, which can reduce the occurrence of POI, promote the recovery of intestinal absorption and shorten the length of hospital stay effectively.

ABSTRACT

Intrauterine adhesions (IUA), which is characterized by endometrial fibrosis, continue to be the most common cause of uterine infertility globally. Our work revealed that 3 fibrotic progression markers (Vimentin, COL5A2, and COL1A1) were significantly increased in the endometrium of IUA patients. Mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (EXOs) have been recently revealed as a cell-free therapy for fibrosis diseases. Nevertheless, the application of EXOs is restricted by the short residency duration in the target tissue. To overcome this limitation, herein, we reported an exosome-based regimen (EXOs-HP) that thermosensitive poloxamer hydrogel possessed the ability to efficiently promote the residency duration of EXOs in the uterine cavity. By downregulating fibrotic progression markers (Vimentin, COL5A2, and COL1A1), EXOs-HP could significantly restore the function and structure of the injured endometrium in the IUA model. Our work provides the theoretical and experimental foundation of EXOs-HP in treating IUA, highlighting the clinical potential of topical EXOs-HP delivery system in IUA patients.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological distress during pregnancy is associated with unfavorable outcomes in infants. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can effectively alleviate psychological distress, but there are often barriers to the access of face-to-face interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a digital guided self-help (GSH) MBI (GSH-MBI) in reducing maternal psychological distress and improving infant neuropsychological performance. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled trial. We recruited 160 women who were 12 to 20 weeks pregnant and exhibited psychological distress. We randomized them into a digital GSH-MBI group and a control group (usual perinatal care). The digital GSH-MBI consisted of a 6-week intervention through a WeChat mini program, with a daily reminder sent to the participants by a research assistant via WeChat. The primary outcomes consisted of maternal psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, and pregnancy-related anxiety symptoms, which were assessed at 6 time points from baseline to 6 months post partum (only pregnancy-related anxiety symptoms were assessed 3 times during pregnancy). The secondary outcomes were infant neuropsychological outcomes, including temperament and developmental behaviors, which were assessed at 6 weeks and 6 months post partum. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the digital GSH-MBI group showed a significant reduction in depression, anxiety, and pregnancy-related anxiety symptoms. In addition, the scores of the digital GSH-MBI group were lower than those of the control group for the 3 types of infant temperament at 6 weeks post partum, including quality of mood, distractibility, and adaptability. CONCLUSIONS: Digital GSH-MBIs are effective in alleviating psychological distress among pregnant women and protecting infant outcomes. BACKGROUND: Tumor-resident microbiota has been documented for various cancer types. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is also enriched with microbiota, while the significance of microbiota in shaping the OSCC microenvironment remains elusive. METHODS: We used bioinformatics and clinical sample analysis to explore relationship between F. nucleatum and OSCC progression. Xenograft tumor model, metabolic screening and RNA sequencing were performed to elucidate mechanisms of pro-tumor role of F. nucleatum. FINDINGS: We show that a major protumorigenic bacterium, F. nucleatum, accumulates in invasive margins of OSCC tissues and drives tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) formation. The mechanistic dissection shows that OSCC-resident F. nucleatum triggers the GalNAc-Autophagy-TBC1D5 signaling, leading to GLUT1 aggregation in the plasma membrane and the deposition of extracellular lactate. Simultaneous functional inhibition of GalNAc and GLUT1 efficiently reduces TAMs formation and restrains OSCC progression. INTERPRETATION: These findings suggest that tumor-resident microbiota affects the immunomodulatory and protumorigenic microenvironment via modulating glycolysis and extracellular lactate deposition. The targeted intervention of this process could provide a distinct clinical strategy for patients with advanced OSCC. ABSTRACT

Oral wounds under diabetic conditions display a significant delay during the healing process, mainly due to oxidative stress-induced inflammatory status and abnormal immune responses. Besides, the wet and complicated dynamic environment of the oral cavity impedes stable treatment of oral wounds. To overcome these, a biomimetic hydrogel adhesive was innovatively developed based on a mussel-inspired multifunctional structure. The adhesive displays efficient adhesion and mechanical harmony on the oral mucosa through enhanced bonding in an acidic proinflammatory environment. The bioadhesive hydrogel exhibits excellent antioxidative properties by mimicking antioxidative enzymatic activities to reverse reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated immune disorders. Experiments on oral wounds of diabetic rats showed that this hydrogel adhesive could effectively protect against mucosal wounds and obviously shorten the inflammatory phase, thus promoting the wound-healing process. Therefore, this study offers a promising therapeutic choice with the potential to advance the clinical treatment of diabetic oral wounds.

ABSTRACT

Multi-slice magnetic resonance images of the fetal brain are usually contaminated by severe and arbitrary fetal and maternal motion. Hence, stable and robust motion correction is necessary to reconstruct high-resolution 3D fetal brain volume for clinical diagnosis and quantitative analysis. However, the conventional registration-based correction has a limited capture range and is insufficient for detecting relatively large motions. Here, we present a novel Affinity Fusion-based Framework for Iteratively Random Motion (AFFIRM) correction of the multi-slice fetal brain MRI. It learns the sequential motion from multiple stacks of slices and integrates the features between 2D slices and reconstructed 3D volume using affinity fusion, which resembles the iterations between slice-to-volume registration and volumetric reconstruction in the regular pipeline. The method accurately estimates the motion regardless of brain orientations and outperforms other state-of-the-art learning-based methods on the simulated motion-corrupted data, with a 48.4% reduction of mean absolute error for rotation and 61.3% for displacement. We then incorporated AFFIRM into the multi-resolution slice-to-volume registration and tested it on the real-world fetal MRI scans at different gestation stages. The results indicated that adding AFFIRM to the conventional pipeline improved the success rate of fetal brain super-resolution reconstruction from 77.2% to 91.9%.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal stress is a pressing issue. However, there is a lack of robust evidence for psychosocial interventions to manage this problem. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based intervention on reducing prenatal stress compared to participation in health education groups. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a prenatal clinic of comprehensive tertiary care from April to October 2017. A total of 108 pregnant women were randomly assigned to an intervention or a control group. Participants completed self-report measures of depression, anxiety, perceived stress, fatigue, positive and negative affect, and mindfulness before, immediately after, and 15 weeks after the 4-week intervention period. Generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the intervention outcomes. RESULTS: The results supported greater improvement in terms of perceived stress (Wald χ2=26.94, p<0.001), fatigue (Wald χ2=17.61, p<0.001), positive affect (Wald χ2=9.03, p = 0.011), negative affect (Wald χ2=11.37, p = 0.003), and mindfulness (Wald χ2=24.97, p<0.001) in the intervention group than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The self-help mindfulness intervention decreased prenatal stress and negative affect and improved positive affect and mindfulness.

ABSTRACT

RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the association between endometrial thickness (EMT) and the birthweight of singleton infants born from frozen-thawed embryo transfer cycles? DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study was conducted from January 2016 to December 2019. Participants were categorized into a natural cycle (NC, n = 8132) group and hormone replacement therapy (HRT, n = 4975) group. Only singleton deliveries were included. The primary outcomes were measures of birthweight and relevant indexes. Multivariable logistic regression and multivariable-adjusted linear regression models that incorporated restricted cubic splines were used. RESULTS: In the HRT group, the risk of delivering a small for gestational age (SGA) infant was increased in women with an EMT <8.0 mm (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-2.91) compared with women with an EMT of 8.0 to <12.0 mm, and increased with an EMT ≥12.0 mm (aOR 1.85, 95% CI 1.03-3.33). An inverted U-shaped relationship was found between EMT and birthweight in women with HRT. No significant differences were shown in birthweight z-score, or being SGA or large for gestational age, in singletons among the three EMT groups in the natural cycles. CONCLUSIONS: A thinner endometrium seen in women undergoing HRT cycles was associated with a lower birthweight z-score, as well as a higher risk of SGA. However, no significant association was observed between EMT and birthweight z-score or SGA in the NC group. It is noteworthy that a thicker endometrium was not associated with a higher birthweight in frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles. Women with a thin endometrium who achieve pregnancy require specialized attention, particularly if they are undergoing FET with HRT cycles.

ABSTRACT

The fetal brains experience rapid and complex development in utero during the second and third trimesters. In utero MRI of the fetal brain in this period enables us to quantify normal fetal brain development in the spatiotemporal domain. In this study, we established a high-quality spatiotemporal atlas between 23 and 38 weeks gestational age (GA) from 90 healthy Chinese human fetuses of both sexes using a pairwise and groupwise registration pipeline. We quantified the fetal cortical morphology indices and characterized their spatiotemporal developmental pattern. The cortical thickness exhibited a biphasic pattern that first increased and then decreased; the curvature fitted well into the Gompertz growth model; sulcal depth increased linearly, while surface area expanded exponentially. The cortical thickness and curvature trajectories consistently pointed to a characteristic time point around GA of 31 weeks. The characteristic GA and growth rate obtained from individual cortical regions suggested a central-to-peripheral developmental gradient, with the earliest development in the parietal lobe, and we also observed a superior-to-inferior gradient within the temporal lobe. These findings may be linked to biophysical events, such as dendritic arborization and thalamocortical fibers ingrowth. The proposed atlas was also compared with an existing fetal atlas from a white/mixed population. Finally, we examined the structural asymmetry of the fetal brains and found extensive asymmetry that dynamically changed with development. The current study depicted a comprehensive profile of fetal cortical development, and the established atlas could be used as a normative reference for neurodevelopmental and diagnostic purposes, especially in the Chinese population.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT We generated a high-quality 4D spatiotemporal atlas of the normal fetal brain development from 23 to 38 gestational weeks in a Chinese population and characterized the spatiotemporal developmental pattern of cortical morphology. According to the cortical development trajectories, the fetal cerebral cortex development follows a central-to-peripheral developmental gradient that may be related to the underlying cellular events. The majority of cortical regions already exhibit significant asymmetry during the fetal period.
