ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To cross-culturally adapt the Australian National University Alzheimer Disease Risk Index (ANU-ADRI) and verify the reliability and validity of its cognitive activity domain. METHODS: According to Beaton's guidelines, the ANU-ADRI was were translated into Chinese. The psychometric properties of ANU-ADRI its cognitive activity was conducted among community-dwelling residents (n = 442) in Changchun, Harbin and Hegang from December 2021 to July 2023. RESULTS: The Chinese version of the ANU-ADRI had good content validity and face validity. Exploratory factor analysis of cognitive activity revealed a 3-factor structure, with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 64.124 %. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a good model fit (x2/df = 1.664, RMSEA = 0.055, RMR = 0.090, GFI = 0.942, CFI = 0.919, IFI = 0.921, TLI = 0.902, and NFI = 0.824). The internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.807) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.787) were considered satisfactory. CONCLUSION: The ANU-ADRI showed acceptable reliability and validity for assessing risk factors for Alzheimer's disease among middle-aged and elderly community-dwelling residents.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning is typically initiated during the last six months of a patient's life. However, due to the progressive decline in the decision-making process in individuals with dementia, their involvement in advance care planning is limited to the early stages of the disease. Currently, there is no consensus on the optimal timing for initiating advance care planning for people with dementia, and a comprehensive review of the literature addressing this matter is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To explore the experiences and perspectives of people with dementia, their family caregivers, and health care professionals with regard to the optimal timing for initiating advance care planning. DESIGN: A meta-synthesis was conducted. DATA SOURCE: The following eight electronic databases were searched: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CINAHL and CNKI, WanFang and Vip. REVIEW METHODS: This review uses thematic synthesis to systematically synthesize qualitative evidence and report findings according to The Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) and the Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Evidence Synthesis. Study selection and data extraction were conducted independently by two researchers, and quality was evaluated using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Qualitative Research Standard Assessment tool. FINDINGS: Twenty-one studies were selected for this review. This review involved an overarching theme: The utilization of pivotal elements to transition from delayed initiation to comprehensive implementation. Three themes emerge, including the prerequisites for initiating advance care planning, not ready to start advance care planning and struggling along narrow roads. For health care professionals, the selection of an opportune moment to initiate advance care planning for people with dementia is not only a challenge but also a crucial prerequisite for the successful implementation of advance care planning. Health care professionals' experience, attitude toward advance care planning, trust relationship with patients, cultural differences among people with dementia and their caregivers, and economic disparities all influence health care professionals' judgment of the timing for initiating advance care planning. CONCLUSIONS: Determining the optimal timing for initiating advance care planning is a complex process that requires a comprehensive consideration of the realities faced by health care professionals, people with dementia and their caregivers. Therefore, it is imperative to provide relevant training to health care professionals to ensure the successful implementation of advance care planning.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To map evidence of the existing virtual reality-based dementia educational programmes and the effects of these educational programmes on dementia formal and informal caregivers. DESIGN: A scoping review. METHODS: A comprehensive search of nine databases was conducted to find studies from the inception of the databases to October 2023. Two authors independently screened the titles and abstracts related to the eligibility criteria. Full texts of potentially relevant studies were read by one author and checked by a second. Data extraction and synthesis using NVivo 12 were undertaken by one author and checked by two other authors. RESULTS: Nineteen studies published between 2002 and 2022. The four randomised controlled studies and five qualitative studies were of moderate to good methodological quality. The 10 quasi-experimental studies were of weak to moderate quality. Fifteen virtual reality-based educational programmes had a positive influence on formal and informal caregivers, including improving caregivers' perceptions changing attitudes towards people with dementia, while the nursing competence of formal caregivers did not improve in short term. Educational programmes that covered dementia-related information and care strategies better improved the knowledge level of dementia formal and informal caregivers. CONCLUSIONS: The qualitative and quantitative studies of moderate to good quality included in this study support the idea that virtual reality-based dementia educational programmes may be a safe and effective way and have potential benefits for improving knowledge, perceptions, attitudes and nursing competence. IMPACT: This scoping review will provide an emerging teaching model for formal and informal caregivers of people with dementia and help them better understand the types and the influence of virtual reality-based dementia educational programmes. REPORTING METHOD: PRISMA-ScR. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Not required as this review in accordance with the aim to map existing literature from the dementia formal and informal caregivers' perspective.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To systematically identify, evaluate and synthesize qualitative evidence about the dignity-related nursing experiences of people with dementia in families and nursing homes, summarize the similarities and differences and analyse the causes and influencing factors. METHODS: A synthesis of qualitative studies retrieved from eight databases that were published before September 2022. Two reviewers independently screened and selected studies. Inclusion criteria were established according to the PICOS principle. Quality assessment was guided by Joanna Briggs Institute's Qualitative Assessment and Review Instrument and the structured topic synthesis method was used to summarise studies eligible for inclusion. RESULTS: Three key themes were extracted from 14 included studies; the living environment, relationship needs and self-awareness, which focused on improving the dementia-centred nursing environment, meeting the needs of the relationship-centred nursing network, and finally, improving the self-awareness of people with dementia to promote dignity. CONCLUSION: This systematic review shows people with dementia need to integrate into society and maintain their dignity in a dementia-friendly environment that is respectful, inclusive environment that promotes freedom.

ABSTRACT

Synsepalum dulcificum (Miracle fruit) is a tropical plant in West and Central Africa, which has been historically used for treating diarrhea in humans and animals. Pharmacological research has shown that the leaves of the plant possess anti-hyperlipidemia activity. However, its anti-hyperlipidemic components have not been reported. In this study, the leaves of S. dulcificum were extracted using 95% ethanol and the extract was fractionated using different polar solvents. The anti-hyperlipidemia activity of the extract and fractions were evaluated using the zebrafish model. The results showed that the ethyl acetate (EA) fraction displayed the best anti-hyperlipidemic effect. A comparison of the high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) profiles of the ethanol extract and different fractions at 350 nm indicated that a peak at 37.4 min has the highest intensity in the EA part, relatively. Then the chemical constituents of the extract and the active fraction were extensively identified using UPLC-Q-Exactive-Orbitrap-MS/MS, showing the main peak was quercitrin and other components in the EA part mainly included quercitrin analogs. Furthermore, the quercitrin was isolated from the plant and its contents in the extract and fractions were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV) method. The quantitative results showed that the content of quercitrin in the EA fraction was 10.04% (w/w). Further pharmacological study indicated that quercitrin also possessed potent anti-hyperlipidemia activity (improvement rates of liver fat and total cholesterol were 75.6% and 92.5% at 40 µg/mL, respectively). Besides, quercitrin showed little toxicity to zebrafish embryos.

ABSTRACT

Stimuli-responsive DNA hydrogels have shown great potential in sensing applications due to their attractive properties such as programmable target responsiveness, excellent biocompatibility, and biodegradability. In contrast to the extensively developed DNA hydrogel sensing systems based on the stimuli-responsive hydrogel-to-solution phase transition of the hydrogel matrix, the quantitative sensing application of DNA hydrogels exhibiting smart shape deformations has rarely been explored. Moreover, bulk DNA hydrogel-based sensing systems also suffer from high material cost and slow response. Herein, free-standing bilayer polyacrylamide/DNA hybrid hydrogel films with programmable responsive properties directed by the sequence of functional DNA units have been constructed. Compared with bulk DNA hydrogels, these DNA hydrogel films with a thickness at the micrometer scale not only greatly reduce the consumption of DNA materials but also facilitate the mass transfer of biomacromolecular substances within the hydrogel network, thus favoring their sensing applications. Therefore, a target-responsive smart DNA hydrogel film-based sensor system is further demonstrated based on the large amplitude macroscopic shape deformation of the film as a visual signal readout. As a proof of concept, Pb2+ or UO22+ ion-responsive DNA units were introduced into the active layer of the bilayer hydrogel films. In the presence of Pb2+ or UO22+ ions, the occurrence of a cleavage reaction within the DNA units leads to the release of DNA segments from the hydrogel film, inducing a dramatic shape deformation of the film, and thus sensing of Pb2+ or UO22+ ions with high specificity is achieved based on measuring the bending angle changes of these smart free-standing films. These smart DNA hydrogel film sensors with target-programmable responsiveness, simple operation, and ease of storage may hold promise for future rapid on-site testing applications.

ABSTRACT

Rechargeable lithium batteries using 5 V positive electrode materials can deliver considerably higher energy density as compared to state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. However, their development remains plagued by the lack of electrolytes with concurrent anodic stability and Li metal compatibility. Here we report a new electrolyte based on dimethyl 2,5-dioxahexanedioate solvent for 5 V-class batteries. Benefiting from the particular chemical structure, weak interaction with lithium cation and resultant peculiar solvation structure, the resulting electrolyte not only enables stable, dendrite-free lithium plating-stripping, but also displays anodic stability up to 5.2 V (vs. Li/Li+), in additive or co-solvent-free formulation, and at low salt concentration of 1 M. Consequently, the Li | |LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cells using the 1 M LiPF6 in 2,5-dioxahexanedioate based electrolyte retain >97% of the initial capacity after 250 cycles, outperforming the conventional carbonate-based electrolyte formulations, making this, and potentially other dicarbonate solvents promising for future Lithium-based battery practical explorations.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we have fabricated a novel Fenton-like ferrihydrite/MoS2 (Fh/MoS2) composite and verified that the introduction of a small amount of iron on the surface of MoS2 can directly promote the exposure of Mo4+, finally enhancing the catalytic activity of the catalyst. Even though the content of iron element is only 1.19% in the composite, the reaction rate constant of Fh/MoS2 system for the degradation of environmental pollutants, such as organic dyes, antibiotic, and ionic liquid, is all much better than that of pure MoS2 system, which is attributed to much more generation of reactive oxygen species derived from synergistic effect of Fe3+/Fe2+ and Mo4+/Mo6+ redox cycles. The results of XPS and low-temperature EPR confirm that the exposure amount of Mo4+ active sites of 10% Fh/MoS2 is greatly increased, which is conducive to the conversion of Fe3+ to Fe2+ in the reaction process, thus effectively promoting the activation of H2O2.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Genetic testing is the gold standard for the diagnosis of hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes but is currently inadequate and nonideal. The decision-making processes regarding genetic testing are even less well known. The present study aims to explore the decision-making experience of genetic testing for colorectal cancer patients and their family members. METHOD: A descriptive qualitative study was employed. Data were collected using individual semi-structured interviews with 5 colorectal cancer patients and 20 family members from November 2020 to April 2021. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using inductive content analysis. RESULTS: Four categories were identified: 1) the source of information for genetic testing, 2) the differentiated attitudes towards genetic testing, 3) genetic testing decisional needs, and 4) the factors influencing genetic testing decision-making. Colorectal cancer patients and their families engaged in two distinct pathways to genetic testing decisions: direct decision-making and indirect decision-making. Throughout these processes, due to the limited source of information, they had information needs that were met and facilitated genetic testing decision-making. CONCLUSIONS: Colorectal cancer patients and family members need knowledge related to genetic testing, but they have limited access to information, which prevents them from making informed decisions. Providing decision aid interventions and informational support are significant steps towards addressing the support needs of this population.

ABSTRACT

The high-density defect states existing at the grain boundaries and heterojunction interfaces induce nonradiative charge recombination and ion migration processes within perovskite film, which seriously impair the device efficiency and stability. Here, we propose a novel synergistic ion-anchoring passivation (SIP) strategy for high-performance perovskite solar cells, by designing a multifunctional molecule to heal the charged defects via electrostatic interactions. The anion and cation species of the multifunctional molecule are rationally screened via high-throughput DFT simulation and experimental verification, which act as efficient surface passivation agents to heal the lead- and iodine-related defects. As a result, the defect-less perovskite films deliver encouraging device power conversion efficiency >24% with negligible hysteresis. A remarkable open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.17 V was obtained with a Voc deficit of 370 mV, featuring the outstanding defect-passivation capability of the SIP strategy. Moreover, the SIP-treated devices show exceptional ambient stability and maintain 70% of the initial efficiency after 150 h of high humidity exposure (relative humidity 70%-80%). Our results highlight the importance of the rational design of passivation agents to realize high-performance perovskite electronics.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Bacillus subtilis or Lentilactobacillus buchneri on the fermentation quality, aerobic stability, and bacterial and fungal communities of whole plant corn silage during aerobic exposure. Whole plant corn was harvested at the wax maturity stage, which chopped to a length of approximately 1 cm, and treated with the following: distilled sterile water control, 2.0 × 105 CFU/g of Lentilactobacillus buchneri (LB) or 2.0 × 105 CFU/g of Bacillus subtilis (BS) for 42 days silage. Then, the samples were exposed to air (23-28°C) after opening and sampled at 0, 18 and 60 h, to investigate fermentation quality, bacterial and fungal communities, and aerobic stability. Inoculation with LB or BS increased the pH value, acetic acid, and ammonia nitrogen content of silage (P < 0.05), but it was still far below the threshold of inferior silage, the yield of ethanol was reduced (P < 0.05), and satisfactory fermentation quality was achieved. With the extension of the aerobic exposure time, inoculation with LB or BS prolonged the aerobic stabilization time of silage, attenuated the trend of pH increase during aerobic exposure, and increased the residues of lactic acid and acetic acid. The bacterial and fungal alpha diversity indices gradually declined, and the relative abundance of Basidiomycota and Kazachstania gradually increased. The relative abundance of Weissella and unclassified_f_Enterobacteria was higher and the relative abundance of Kazachstania was lower after inoculation with BS compared to the CK group. According to the correlation analysis, Bacillus and Kazachstania are bacteria and fungi that are more closely related to aerobic spoilage and inoculation with LB or BS could inhibit spoilage. The FUNGuild predictive analysis indicated that the higher relative abundance of fungal parasite-undefined saprotroph in the LB or BS groups at AS2, may account for its good aerobic stability. In conclusion, silage inoculated with LB or BS had better fermentation quality and improved aerobic stability by effectively inhibiting the microorganisms that induce aerobic spoilage.

Caring for people with dementia is considered one of the most stressful and difficult forms of care. Informal caregivers constantly face high physical and emotional burdens. Therefore, it is essential to provide them with effective and practical support. Web-based decision aids can provide convenient and effective decision support for informal caregivers. The aim of this study was to assess and synthesize the influence of web-based decision aids on informal caregivers of people with dementia. Searches of electronic databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, Embase, PsycINFO, CNKI, Open Grey and Baidu Wenku) and reference lists of relevant studies were conducted in July 2022. Qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies published in Chinese and English on the use of web-based decision aids by informal caregivers of people with dementia were included. The studies were selected by screening titles, abstracts and full texts, and the quality of each study was assessed by two researchers independently. Fourteen studies were published between 2010 and 2022, including five qualitative studies, four quantitative studies and five mixed-methods studies. Web-based decision aids have a positive influence on informal caregivers of people with dementia by providing decision support, satisfying needs, promoting psychological health, improving communication ability and reducing caregiver burden. Informal caregivers of people with dementia are receptive to web-based decision aids and expect their functionality to be optimized further. Web-based decision aids offer potential benefits to informal caregivers by providing effective decision-making support and improving their psychological health and ability to communicate.

ABSTRACT

Antigen self-assembly nanovaccines advance the minimalist design of therapeutic cancer vaccines, but the issue of inefficient cross-presentation has not yet been fully addressed. Herein, we report a unique approach by combining the concepts of "antigen multi-copy display" and "calcium carbonate (CaCO3) biomineralization" to increase cross-presentation. Based on this strategy, we successfully construct sub-100 nm biomineralized antigen nanosponges (BANSs) with high CaCO3 loading (38.13 wt%) and antigen density (61.87%). BANSs can be effectively uptaken by immature antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the lymph node upon subcutaneous injection. Achieving efficient spatiotemporal coordination of antigen cross-presentation and immune effects, BANSs induce the production of CD4+ T helper cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes, resulting in effective tumor growth inhibition. BANSs combined with anti-PD-1 antibodies synergistically enhance anti-tumor immunity and reverse the tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment. Overall, this CaCO3 powder-mediated biomineralization of antigen nanosponges offer a robust and safe strategy for cancer immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: People with dementia experience a high prevalence of comorbidities that seriously affect patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to map the evidence and components related to comorbidity management, including interventions to facilitate and support the practice of management. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted. In June 2022, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), Open grey, and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify relevant literature. The inclusion criteria were outlined to identify studies on comorbidity management in people with dementia. RESULTS: We found 43 items that met the inclusion criteria. The majority of the studies were published since 2010. Most research focused on medication management, health care service use and provision, and comorbidity-related monitoring and management; there were a small number of studies that involved decision-making. Only 6 studies developed interventions to support dementia care, which included comorbidity management. Studies involving the comorbidity management process were mainly based on qualitative methods, which make it difficult to quantify the impact of these processes on comorbidity management. CONCLUSIONS: Given the serious impact of dementia on managing comorbidities, there is a need to develop systematic interventions targeting the management of comorbidities.

ABSTRACT

Alfalfa is harvested two or three times a year in central and western Inner Mongolia, China. However, the variations in bacterial communities as affected by wilting and ensiling, and the ensiling characteristics of alfalfa among the different cuttings, are not fully understood. To enable a more complete evaluation, alfalfa was harvested three times a year. At each time of cutting, alfalfa was harvested at early bloom, wilted for 6 h, and then ensiled in polyethylene bags for 60 days. The bacterial communities and nutritional components of fresh alfalfa(F), wilted alfalfa(W) and ensiled alfalfa(S), and the fermentation quality and functional profile of bacterial communities of the three cuttings alfalfa silage, were then analyzed. Functional characteristics of silage bacterial communities were evaluated according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes. The results showed that all nutritional components, fermentation quality, bacterial communities, carbohydrate, amino acid metabolism and key enzymes of bacterial communities were influenced by cutting time. The species richness of F increased from the first cutting to the third cutting; it was not changed by wilting, but was decreased by ensiling. At phylum level, Proteobacteria were more predominant than other bacteria, followed by Firmicutes (0.063-21.39%) in F and W in the first and second cuttings. Firmicutes (96.66-99.79%) were more predominant than other bacteria, followed by Proteobacteria (0.13-3.19%) in S in the first and second cuttings. Proteobacteria, however, predominated over all other bacteria in F, W, or S in the third cutting. The third-cutting silage showed the highest levels of dry matter, pH and butyric acid (p < 0.05). Higher levels of pH and butyric acid were positively correlated with the most predominant genus in silage, and with Rosenbergiella and Pantoea. The third-cutting silage had the lowest fermentation quality as Proteobacteria were more predominant. This suggested that, compared with the first and second cutting, the third cutting is more likely to result in poorly preserved silage in the region studied.

Problem behaviors in early childhood may put young children at risk for negative behavioral and psychosocial problems. This study examined the effectiveness of group PCIT on Chinese young children's externalizing and internalizing problems. The participants were 58 mothers with their children aged 2-3 years (M = 2.95 years, SD = 0.22), assigned to an immediate treatment (n = 26) group or to a waitlist (n = 32) control group. The program involved comprehensive group intervention and featured weekly 60-90-min sessions, totaling ten sessions over three months. Results indicate that group PCIT not only significantly improved teacher-reported problem behaviors in children, but also improved observed maternal parenting behavior. These findings support the use of group PCIT in Chinese children and provide mothers with an evidence-based tool to address problem behaviors in a non-clinical population.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) has a high prevalence and poor prognosis. This study aimed to identify biomarkers related to the clinical stage (I-IV) of CRC. Methods: The LinkedOmics database was used as the discovery cohort, and two Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases (GSE41258 and GSE422848) served as validation cohorts. The trend test of genes related to clinical stage (I-IV) of CRC patients was identified by the Jonckheere-Terpstra test. The cBioPortal database, Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) and PrognoScan databases were used to explore the expression change and prognostic value of clinical stage-related genes in CRC patients. CRC cells overexpressed AGPAT5 were constructed and used for cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), flow cytometric, and wound healing assays in vitro. Results: We identified four clinical stage-related genes, GSR, AGPAT5, CRLF1, and NPR3, in CRC. The CNA frequencies of GSR, CRLF1, AGPAT5, and NPR3 occurred in 11%, 2.4%, 13%, and 3% of patients, respectively. The expression of GSR and AGPAT5 tended to decrease with CRC stage (I-IV) progression, and the expression of CRLF1 and NPR3 tended to increase with CRC stage (I-IV) progression. Compared with the normal group, AGPAT5 expression was markedly decreased in stage IV CRC. Higher GSR and AGPAT5 expression levels were associated with better overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in CRC patients. Lower CRLF1 and NPR3 expression levels were associated with better OS and DFS in CRC. GSR, CRLF1, AGPAT5, and NPR3 expression were related to CRC progression, microsatellite instability, and tumour purity in CRC. Furthermore, AGPAT5 was downregulated in CRC cell lines, and overexpression of AGPAT5 inhibited cell proliferation and migration and promoted cell apoptosis in CRC cells. Conclusion: Low AGPAT5 expression may serve as a poor prognostic factor and clinical stage biomarker in CRC. In addition, AGPAT5 acts as a tumour suppressor in CRC progression.

Due to labor migration and social changes, the Chinese elderly are facing significant social isolation, along with changes in aging attitudes. However, whether social isolation affects loneliness among the Chinese elderly and whether this relationship is moderated and mediated by aging attitudes is unclear. This empirical study aimed to respond to the above questions in the Chinese context, Based on the data from the 2014 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (N = 6,645), the results showed that social isolation is a positive predictor of loneliness; aging attitudes mediate the relationship between social isolation and loneliness. Social isolation affects the loneliness of the elderly partially by weakening positive aging attitudes and strengthening negative aging attitudes; aging attitudes moderate the effect of social isolation on loneliness. For those older adults with higher positive aging attitudes, social isolation has a much smaller effect on loneliness. While for those older adults with higher negative aging attitudes, social isolation has a more substantial effect on their feelings of loneliness. Our results indicate that less social isolation is an effective way to relieve loneliness, and maintaining higher positive aging attitudes and lower negative aging attitudes, is important for the Chinese elderly to prevent loneliness when facing social isolation.

ABSTRACT

Interfacial pH is critical to electrocatalytic reactions involving proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes, and maintaining an optimal interfacial pH at the electrochemical interface is required to achieve high activity. However, the interfacial pH varies inevitably during the electrochemical reaction owing to slow proton transfer at the interfacial layer, even in buffer solutions. It is therefore necessary to find an effective and general way to promote proton transfer for regulating the interfacial pH. In this study, we propose that promoting proton transfer at the interfacial layer can be used to regulate the interfacial pH in order to enhance electrocatalytic activity. By adsorbing a bifunctional 4-mercaptopyridine (4MPy) molecule onto the catalyst surface via its thiol group, the pyridyl group can be tethered on the electrochemical interface. The pyridyl group acts as both a good proton acceptor and donor for promoting proton transfer at the interfacial layer. Furthermore, the pK a of 4MPy can be modulated with the applied potentials to accommodate the large variation of interfacial pH under different current densities. By in situ electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (in situ EC-SERS), we quantitatively demonstrate that proton transfer at the interfacial layer of the Pt catalyst coated with 4MPy (Pt@4MPy) remains ideally thermoneutral during the H+ releasing electrocatalytic oxidation reaction of formic acid (FAOR) at high current densities. Thus, the interfacial pH is controlled effectively. In this way, the FAOR apparent current measured from Pt@4MPy is twice that measured from a pristine Pt catalyst. This work establishes a general strategy for regulating interfacial pH to enhance the electrocatalytic activities.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the effects of adding Lactobacillus buchneri (LB), Lactobacillus brevis (LBR) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) on the fermentation quality, nitrate degradation and bacterial community of sorghum-sudangrass silage. The results showed that the addition of LB significantly increased the pH and acetic acid content (p < 0.05), but high-quality silage was obtained. The addition of LBR and BS improved the fermentation quality of sorghum-sudangrass silage. The use of additives reduced the nitrate content in sorghum-sudangrass silage. The LB group increased the release of N2O at 3-7 days of ensiling (p < 0.05), and LBR and BS increased the release of N2O at 1-40 days of ensiling (p < 0.05). On the first day of ensiling, all silages were dominated by Weisslla, over 3 days of ensiling all silages were dominated by Lactobacillus. Acinetobacter, Serratia, Aquabacterium, and unclassified_f_enterobacteriaceae showed significant negative correlations with nitrate degradation during sorghum-sudangrass ensiling (p < 0.05). The BS and LBR groups increased the metabolic abundance of denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction, and assimilatory nitrate reduction (p < 0.05). Overall, the additive ensures the fermentation quality of sorghum-sudangrass silage and promotes the degradation of nitrate by altering the bacterial community.
