ABSTRACT

The results of clinical studies are presented on the combined chemotherapy in spread breast cancer, conducted according to the following three schedules: 1. thiophosphamide, carminomycin, vincristine, ftorafur, prednisolone, 2. diiodobenzoTEPA, carminomycin, vincristine, ftorafur, prednisolone, 3. methotrexate, cyclophosphane, vincristine, ftorafur, prednisolone. The combined chemotherapy in the complex treatment of 91 patients with spread breast cancer was found to be effective in 33-40% of cases. Primary tumors of the mammary gland and metastases in soft tissues, lymph nodes were mostly sensitive to the combined chemotherapy, metastases in bones and visceral organs--less sensitive. Schedules 2 and 3 proved to be the least toxic ones.

ABSTRACT

Eighty three patients with locally spread cancer of the mammary gland (stage IIIb and IIIc) were subjected to the preoperative polychemotherapy with 5-fluoruracil, methotrexate, cyclophosphane, vincristine against the background of the hormonal therapy (ovarioectomy + corticosteroids). Diminishing of the tumor bulk by 50% was noted in 53 patients. In 26 cases the effect was less pronounced, no effect was observed in 4. Side effects and complications occurred during chemotherapy (40 patients) were liquidated by selecting the individual doses of chemical drugs and the corresponding symptomatic therapy. Among 83 patients with a local spread of breast cancer the preoperative polychemotherapy enabled radical mastectomy to be performed in 79 of them.

ABSTRACT

Studies have indicated that the appearance of metastases in regional lymph nodes is not dependent on the tumor size. The probability that the tumor may be local is the greater the less its size. The term "early diagnosis" referred to prophylactic examinations in the up-to-date diagnostics remains to be unwarranted, without distinct boundaries, and the true tumor proliferation may be judged only after a histological assay of lymph nodes.

ABSTRACT

Observation on 16 patients with synchronous cancer of mammary glands are reported. This group comprised patients in whom tumors developed either simultaneously or with a 6-month interval. Synchronous cancer was more frequently observed in patients in the period of active menstrual-ovarian function (an average age--40.5 years). Eleven of these patients survived for 3 years and longer; 5 of them survived without any recurrence and metastases within the terms from 3 to 16 years. The use of the complex therapy encourages the hope of improving remote results.
