ABSTRACT

This comprehensive review elucidates the critical role of antioxidants to mitigate oxidative stress, a common denominator in an array of neurodegenerative disorders. Oxidative stress-induced damage has been linked to the development of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This article examines a wide range of scientific literature and methodically delineates the several methods by which antioxidants exercise their neuroprotective benefits. It also explores into the complex relationship between oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, focusing on how antioxidants can alter signaling pathways and transcription factors to slow neurodegenerative processes. Key antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, glutathione, and polyphenolic compounds, are tested for their ability to combat reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. The dual character of antioxidants, which operate as both direct free radical scavengers and regulators of cellular redox homeostasis, is investigated in terms of therapeutic potential. Furthermore, the study focuses on new antioxidant-based therapy techniques and their mechanisms including Nrf-2, PCG1α, Thioredoxin etc., which range from dietary interventions to targeted antioxidant molecules. Insights into ongoing clinical studies evaluating antioxidant therapies in neurodegenerative illnesses offer an insight into the translational potential of antioxidant research. Finally, this review summarizes our present understanding of antioxidant processes in neurodegenerative illnesses, providing important possibilities for future study and treatment development.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Body hair removal plays an important role in beauty standards, particularly for women. Finding a method that is easy to use, cheap, and can be done without supervision can significantly affect long-term hair reduction and reduce the side effects of hair removal. The present study investigated the impact of a containing 20% broad bean (Vicia faba) extract cream on axillary hair removal. Materials and Methods: Twenty-five female volunteers were randomly divided into A (right axillary intervention - left axillary placebo) and B (right axillary placebo - left axillary intervention). Depending on the group, each person used a cream containing 20% broad bean extract )"The extract made from the seeds and pods of broad beans.") on one side and a placebo on the other twice a day for three months. Volunteers shaved their axillary hairs three days before each visit and took pictures of both sides on the day of the visit with a trichoscope (to check the diameter and thickness of the hairs). Results: We found a decrease in thickness on the intervention group (the axilla where a cream containing broad bean extract was applied); however, this difference was not significant between the intervention side and the placebo. In terms of the number of hairs, the difference between the two groups was significant only in the second month despite the decrease on the intervention side. Evaluation based on the personal judgment of the volunteers showed that there was a substantial difference in terms of the number of hairs (p=0.012) and thinning of hair (p=0.02). Conclusion: Our findings showed that 20% broad bean extract cream could potentially reduce axillary hair growth.

ABSTRACT

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a significant global health issue. Recent research highlights the gut microbiota's critical role in RA's development, noting how dietary factors can alter these microbial communities. This has led to an increased focus on how the gut microbiota (GM) influences RA and the potential for dietary ingredients to offer anti-RA benefits by modifying GM. This review presents a concise examination of the GM associated with RA, identifying specific microbial taxa at various levels that are implicated in the disease. It delves into dietary components known for their anti-RA properties through GM modulation and their mechanisms. Findings from numerous studies, including both animal and human research, show significant differences in the GM composition between individuals with early and established RA. Certain microbes like Tenericutes, Synergistetes, and Proteobacteria have been linked to RA progression, whereas Bacteroidetes and some strains of Lactobacillus are shown to have protective effects against RA. Dietary elements such as fibers, polysaccharides, resistant starch, and peptides have been identified as influential in combating RA. These components work by altering the GM's metabolites and impacting immune cells related to the GM. This review suggests the potential for developing functional foods aimed at treating RA by targeting GM.

ABSTRACT

Aim: The study was designed to develop and analyze curcumin nanoparticles. Methods: Curcumin nanoparticles were formulated and evaluated. Their efficacy in protecting against brain damage was investigated in a rat model of ischemic stroke, considering motor function, muscle strength and antioxidant enzyme activity. Results: Curcumin nanoparticles displayed a zeta potential of -55 ± 13.5 mV and an average particle size of 51.40 ± 21.70 nm. In ischemic stroke rat models, curcumin nanoparticle treatment significantly improved motor functions, and muscle strength and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes like glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dismutase and catalase, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Conclusion: Curcumin nanoparticles showed significant neuroprotective effects in ischemic stroke models.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Mechanical neck pain has become prevalent among computer professionals possibly because of prolonged computer use. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between neck pain intensity, anthropometric metrics, cervical range of motion, and related disabilities using advanced machine learning techniques. Method: This study involved 75 computer professionals, comprising 27 men and 48 women, aged between 25 and 44 years, all of whom reported neck pain following extended computer sessions. The study utilized various tools, including the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain measurement, anthropometric tools for body metrics, a Universal Goniometer for cervical ROM, and the Neck Disability Index (NDI). For data analysis, the study employed SPSS (v16.0) for basic statistics and a suite of machine-learning algorithms to discern feature importance. The capability of the kNN algorithm is evaluated using its confusion matrix. Results: The "NDI Score (%)" consistently emerged as the most significant feature across various algorithms, while metrics like age and computer usage hours varied in their rankings. Anthropometric results, such as BMI and body circumference, did not maintain consistent ranks across algorithms. The confusion matrix notably demonstrated its classification process for different VAS scores (mild, moderate, and severe). The findings indicated that 56% of the pain intensity, as measured by the VAS, could be accurately predicted by the dataset. Discussion: Machine learning clarifies the system dynamics of neck pain among computer professionals and highlights the need for different algorithms to gain a comprehensive understanding. Such insights pave the way for creating tailored ergonomic solutions and health campaigns for this population.

ABSTRACT

The present study reveals toxic metals, proximate composition, and growth conditions in seven fish species, aiding their nutritional importance and conditions. The samples of seven different small indigenous fish species, including Xenentodon cancila, Glossogobious giuris, Pseudambassis ranga, Puntius dorsolis, Mystus vittatus, Dawkinsia filamentosa, and Dawkinsia tambraparaniei, were collected in river Gadananathi, Tamilnadu, India. A total 14 fish samples were analyzed for lead, cadmium, and copper using atomic absorption spectrometry. The standard procedures were used to determine the length-weight and proximate composition of the seven fishes. The findings revealed that the seven fish species had variable amounts of metal buildup. Cu levels were highest in D. tambraparniei gills and lowest in M. vittatus gills and livers; nonetheless, substantial amounts of Cu were found in P. dorsalis livers. In the length-weight correlations of the regression parameters of coefficient value r2, the "a" and "b" values revealed a positive allometric growth rate in all fish species except G. giuris and M. vittatus. However, X. cancila had the highest composition in the proximate analysis, while D. tambraparniei and D. filamentosa had the highest protein content mean value at a significant level (P ≤ 0.05). Overall, discrepancies in nutritional content might be related to species, environmental circumstances, fish age and size, and food availability.

ABSTRACT

In the present investigation, with an effort to provide appropriate material for future applications, we have touched on two viable advancement targets: the production of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) employing an ultrasonic approach and the use of Ag-NPs in environmental remediation. A green economical method was involved to prepare Ag-NPs using butyl acrylate as a stabilizer. The following techniques were used for analysing Ag-NPs: energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for the lattice characteristics showed that Ag-NPs have a face-centered structure with an average crystallite size of 9.51-11.83 nm. FE-SEM and TEM analysis were used for morphological investigations, and revealed that Ag-NPs had a spherical shape with an average particle size of 16.27 nm. The EDX profile displayed a strong signal at ∼3.0 keV, which indicated that the samples comprised silver. UV-Visible spectrophotometer with the absorption maximum occurring between 401 and 411 nm further confirmed the formation of Ag-NPs. The dye degradation effect of synthesized Ag-NPs on methylene blue and Rhodamine B was analyzed to assess their ability for environmental remediation, and results showed that around 100% of the dye degradation effect. This study has provided a most plausible mechanism for the dye degradation.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BCa) is the most common cause of cancer death in Pakistan. In 2019, Pakistan saw the highest global BCa-associated death rate. But do Pakistani women know about the various aspects of BCa? And how prevalent are BCa screening methods amongst Pakistani females? These questions formed the basis for our study. METHODS: We conducted this review in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. On September 1, 2023, we searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar, and performed a citation search to search for eligible studies published in 2010 or after, using the following terms: "breast cancer" and "Pakistan". Observational studies that evaluated BCa awareness and/or practice amongst Pakistani females who were not associated with medicine were eligible. We used the National Institutes of Health quality assessment tool to assess the risk of bias. We conducted a proportion meta-analysis to calculate pooled prevalences for variables. RESULTS: Responses from 9766 Pakistani women across 18 included studies showed alarmingly low levels of BCa knowledge: risk factors, 42.7% (95% CI: 34.1%-51.4%); symptoms, 41.8% (95% CI: 26.2%-57.5%); diagnostic modalities, 36.3% (95% CI: 23.1%-49.4%); treatments, 46.6% (95% CI: 13.5%-79.8%). Prevalence of breast self-examination (BSE) and ever having undergone a clinical breast exam (CBE) was 28.7% (95% CI: 17.9%-39.6%) and 15.3% (95 CI: 11.2%-19.4%), respectively. BCa knowledge was significantly associated with better educational status, age, and socioeconomic status. CONCLUSION: On average, only two in five Pakistani women are aware of one or more risk factors, symptoms, or diagnostic modalities. Approximately one in two women know about possible BCa treatment. Less than one in three women practice regular BSE, and less than one in five women have ever undergone a CBE.

Background: Women and racialized minorities continue to be underrepresented in cardiovascular (CV) trial outcomes data, despite comprising a significant global burden of CV disease. This study evaluated the impact of trial characteristics on the temporal enrollment of women and racialized minorities in prominent CV trials published in the period 1986-2023. Methods: MEDLINE was searched for CV trials published in The Lancet, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine. Participant and investigator demographics, types of interventions, clinical indications, and funding sources were compared according to the enrollment of women or racialized minorities. Results: From 799 studies, including 4,071,921 patients, the enrollment of women and racialized minorities significantly increased from 1986 to 2023 (both P ≤ 0.001). Although the enrollment of women varied by trial indication, comprising 25.0% of coronary artery disease, 35.2% of noncoronary and/or vascular disease, 13.8% of heart failure, 17.0% of arrhythmia, and 28.7% of other CV trials (P ≤ 0.001), it did not differ by peer-reviewed vs industry funding. First authors who were women were more likely than first authors who were men to enroll significantly more women (P = 0.01). Conclusions: Active efforts to increase diverse enrollment, along with improved reporting, including of sex and race, in future CV trials may increase the generalizability of their findings and applicability to global populations.


Contexte: Les femmes et les groupes racisés demeurent sous-représentés dans les données de résultats d'essais cliniques sur les maladies cardiovasculaires (CV) malgré l'important fardeau global associé à ces maladies. Cette étude visait à évaluer l'effet des caractéristiques des essais sur la sélection temporelle des femmes et des membres de groupes racisés dans les essais portant principalement sur les maladies CV durant la période de 1986 à 2023. Méthodologie: La base de données MEDLINE a été consultée à la recherche d'essais sur les maladies CV publiés dans The Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association et New England Journal of Medicine. Les données démographiques des participants et des chercheurs, les types d'interventions, les indications cliniques et les sources de financement ont été comparés en fonction de la sélection des femmes ou des membres de groupes racisés. Résultats: Dans 799 études cumulant 4 071 921 patients, la sélection des femmes et des membres de groupes racisés a augmenté significativement entre 1986 et 2023 (p ≤ 0,001 dans les deux cas). Bien que la sélection des femmes variait en fonction des indications des essais, soit 25,0 % dans les essais portant sur les coronaropathies, 35,2 % pour les maladies non coronariennes et/ou vasculaires, 13,8 % pour l'insuffisance cardiaque, 17,0 % pour l'arythmie et 28,7 % pour d'autres maladies CV (p ≤ 0,001), elle ne différait pas selon que les études étaient révisées par des pairs ou qu'elles étaient financées par l'industrie. Lorsqu'une femme était l'autrice principale, le nombre de femmes sélectionnées était susceptible d'être plus élevé que lorsque l'auteur principal était un homme (p = 0,01). Conclusions: Des efforts actifs pour diversifier davantage la sélection des participants et mieux rendre compte des différences, notamment en ce qui concerne le sexe et la race, pourraient élargir la portée des conclusions des futurs essais sur les maladies CV et leur application à l'ensemble de la population.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the research was to investigate and assess how effective Vitamin E is in preventing or reducing liver inflammation and stromal congestion associated with alcoholic liver injury. STUDY DESIGN: This is a laboratory-based experimental study. METHODOLOGY: A total of 18 domestic rabbits were divided into groups A, B, and C. Group A was the control group and treated with normal saline as a placebo. Groups B and C were given 30% ethanol in a daily dose of 30 ml/kg/day. Additionally, group C was treated with vitamin E at 50 mg/kg/day. All three groups were sub-divided into two sub-groups I and II on the basis of experimental duration of eight weeks and four weeks respectively. The subgroups with eight weeks of experimental time duration were categorized as "category E8" and subgroups with an experimental duration of four weeks were categorized as "category E4". Liver tissue samples from each animal were subjected to staining using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stain for histological staining in order to assess portal inflammation and to measure the sizes of hepatic sinusoids and central veins to evaluate hepatic congestion. RESULTS: A statistically significant variance was observed in the size of central veins, hepatic sinusoids, and invasion of inflammatory cells in portal areas across and between the groups within categories E4 and E8. Animals treated with vitamin E exhibited lower invasion of inflammatory cells and larger central veins and sinusoids compared to those not treated with vitamin E. CONCLUSION: Vitamin E may have a significant role in reducing or limiting the infiltration of inflammatory cells and could help prevent hepatic congestion in cases of alcoholic liver injury.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium vivax remains a major challenge for malaria control and elimination due to its ability to cause relapsing illness. To prevent relapses the Indian National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) recommends treatment with primaquine at a dose of 0.25 mg/kg/day provided over 14 days. Shorter treatment courses may improve adherence and treatment effectiveness. METHODS: This is a hospital-based, randomised, controlled, open-label trial in two centres in India. Patients above the age of 16 years, with uncomplicated vivax malaria, G6PD activity of ≥ 30% of the adjusted male median (AMM) and haemoglobin levels ≥ 8 g/dL will be recruited into the study and randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive standard schizonticidal treatment plus 7-day primaquine at 0.50 mg/kg/day or standard care with schizonticidal treatment plus 14-day primaquine at 0.25 mg/kg/day. Patients will be followed up for 6 months. The primary endpoint is the incidence risk of any P. vivax parasitaemia at 6 months. Safety outcomes include the incidence risk of severe anaemia (haemoglobin < 8 g/dL), the risk of blood transfusion, a > 25% fall in haemoglobin and an acute drop in haemoglobin of > 5 g/dL during primaquine treatment. DISCUSSION: This study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of a 7-day primaquine regimen compared to the standard 14-day regimen in India. Results from this trial are likely to directly inform national treatment guidelines. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Trial is registered on CTRI portal, Registration No: CTRI/2022/12/048283.

BACKGROUND: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) is the first dominant ubiquitous bacterial species identified from the genus Stenotrophomonas in 1943 from a human source. S. maltophilia clinical strains are resistance to several therapies, this study is designed to investigate the whole genome sequence and antimicrobial resistance genes prediction in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) SARC-5 and SARC-6 strains, isolated from the nasopharyngeal samples of an immunocompromised patient. METHODS: These bacterial strains were obtained from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital, Pakistan. The bacterial genome was sequenced using a whole-genome shotgun via a commercial service that used an NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) technology called as Illumina Hiseq 2000 system for genomic sequencing. Moreover, detailed in-silico analyses were done to predict the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in S. maltophilia. RESULTS: Results showed that S. maltophilia is a rare gram negative, rod-shaped, non sporulating bacteria. The genome assembly results in 24 contigs (>500 bp) having a size of 4668,850 bp with 65.8% GC contents. Phylogenetic analysis showed that SARC-5 and SARC-6 were closely related to S. maltophilia B111, S. maltophilia BAB-5317, S. maltophilia AHL, S. maltophilia BAB-5307, S. maltophilia RD-AZPVI_04, S. maltophilia JFZ2, S. maltophilia RD_MAAMIB_06 and lastly with S. maltophilia sp ROi7. Moreover, the whole genome sequence analysis of both SARC-5 and SARC-6 revealed the presence of four resistance genes adeF, qacG, adeF, and smeR. CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed that S. maltophilia SARC-5 and SARC-6 are one of the leading causes of nosocomial infection which carry multiple antibiotic resistance genes.

Recent research has shed light on the culpability of LA (left atrial) abnormality, in the form of atrial cardiopathy, as an independent risk factor for the development of atrial fibrillation, LA thrombus and subsequent stroke. The aim of this study was to measure LA electromechanical dissociation (EMD), LA volumes, P-wave dispersion (PWD) and P-wave terminal force in V1 (PTFV1) as markers of atrial cardiopathy in patients with ESUS (embolic stroke of undetermined source), to determine whether atrial cardiopathy is an integral part in the causal pathway of ESUS. 28 patients presenting with ischemic stroke and fulfilling the criteria for ESUS were enrolled into this cross-sectional, observational study along with a control group of 28 age- and gender-matched apparently healthy individuals. On ECG, PWD and PTFV1 were measured. On echocardiography, LA EMD and LA volumes were recorded. Increased PWD (34.14 ± 9.89 ms vs. 27.32 ± 8.95 ms; p = 0.01), atrial EMD (73.32 ± 16.31 ms vs. 63.63 ± 13.59 ms; p = 0.02) and LA volumes were observed in patients with ESUS as compared to controls. A significant correlation was also found between these parameters (p < 0.01). According to the results of our study, PWD, atrial EMD and LA volumes may be novel predictors for ESUS. Our results support the notion that atrial cardiopathy is a distinct mechanism of thrombosis in ESUS patients. Further research is required to clarify its function in the causation of stroke, ESUS in particular.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining the quality of life is the main objective of managing type 2 diabetes (T2DM) (QoL). Since it is a key factor in patient motivation and adherence, treatment-related QoL has always been considered when choosing glucose-lowering medicines. The objective of the study was to evaluate the quality of life besides glycemic control among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients receiving Treviamet® & Treviamet XR® (Sitagliptin with Metformin) in routine care. METHODS: It was a prospective, open-label, non-randomized clinical trial including T2DM patients uncontrolled on Metformin therapy. All patients received Treviamet® & Treviamet XR® for six months. Sequential changes in QoL, fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, body weight, and blood pressure were monitored from baseline to 3 consecutive follow-up visits. The frequency of adverse events (AEs) was also noted throughout the study. RESULTS: A total of 504 patients were screened; 188 completed all three follow-ups. The mean QoL score significantly declined from 57.09% at baseline to 33.64% at the 3rd follow-up visit (p < 0.01). Moreover, a significant decline in mean HbA1c and FPG levels was observed from baseline to 3rd follow-up visit (p < 0.01). Minor adverse events were observed, including abdominal discomfort, nausea, flatulence, and indigestion. Gender, HbA1c, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort were significant predictors of a patient's QoL, as revealed by the Linear Regression Model (R2 = 0.265, F(16, 99) = 2.231). CONCLUSION: Treviamet® & Treviamet XR® significantly improved glycemic control (HbA1c levels) and QoL in T2DM patients without serious adverse events. ABSTRACT

The oil of the Unani medicinal herb Baboona (Matricaria chamomilla) has shown potential in the management of pain. However, predicaments such as poor skin penetration, skin sensitization, liable to degradation, and volatile nature restrict its use. Therefore, our group for the first time has developed a carrier-based delivery system to facilitate the direct application of chamomile oil to the forehead. The developed nanogel was characterized for physical parameters such as compatibility, TEM, and stability studies. Further, it was also evaluated for pH, viscosity, spread ability, and extrudability, as well as through texture analyses, in vitro studies, and skin irritation tests. The formulation was successfully developed with all the necessary attributes. The in vitro studies revealed the enhanced skin penetration of chamomile oil nanogel. The in vivo studies were also performed in chemically induced pain models, mimicking migraine. The studies show significant improvement of the pain threshold for chamomile nanogel when compared to the positive control group and the results were comparable to marketed diclofenac formulations. Finally, the encapsulation into nanogel reduced the skin irritation property. The nanogel formulation showed promising effects in the pain management of migraine.

ABSTRACT

Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) can be classified as permanent or transient interactions based on their stability or lifetime. Understanding the precise details of such protein interactions will pave the way for the discovery of inhibitors and for understanding the nature and function of PPIs. In the present work, 43 relevant physicochemical, geometrical and structural features were calculated for a curated dataset from the literature, comprising of 402 protein-protein complexes of permanent and transient categories, and 5 different Supervised Machine Learning models were developed with Scikit-learn to predict transient and permanent PPI. Additionally, deep learning method with Artificial Neural Network was also performed using Tensor Flow and Keras. Predicted models achieved accuracy ranging from 76.54% to 82.71% and k-NN has achieved the highest accuracy. Detailed analysis of these methods revealed that Interface areas such as Percent interface accessible area, Interface accessible area and Total interface area and the parameters defining the shape of the PPI interface such as Planarity, Eccentricity and Circularity are the most discriminating factors between these two categories. The present method could serve as an effective tool to understand the mechanism of protein association and to predict the transient and permanent interactions, which could supplement the costly and time-consuming experimental techniques.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Octreotide could increase serum sodium in cirrhotics with hyponatremia by counteracting splanchnic vasodilation. Current supporting data is limited to case reports and series. The aim of the study is to assess the effect of octreotide on serum sodium in cirrhotic inpatients with hyponatremia compared with controls. METHODS: This is a retrospective study including adult inpatients with cirrhosis, admitted for ≥5 days with Na <133 at baseline. We excluded those receiving other vasoconstrictor infusions, hypertonic saline, tolvaptan or dialysis. Controls represented an equal number of inpatients with cirrhosis not receiving octreotide. Sodium changes on days 5, 7 and 10 were evaluated with multivariable adjustment. RESULTS: Each group consisted of 156 patients. The octreotide subjects had more cirrhosis complications. Baseline sodium was lower in the octreotide group, and their change in sodium at day 5 was higher (6.6 ± 5.6 vs. 3.5 ± 5.3; P < 0.001). Significant differences were also noted on days 7 and 10 (7.84 ± 6.76 vs. 4.33 ± 6.2 and 7.99 ± 6.72 vs. 5.2 ± 6.56, respectively). The impact of octreotide was lessened but remained significant ( P = 0.019) in a mixed model adjusting for baseline sodium, creatinine, requirement of paracentesis, midodrine, albumin and fresh frozen plasma. More octreotide patients achieved hyponatremia resolution (55.1% vs. 42.3%; P = 0.031), but significance was not preserved in multivariate logistic regression. CONCLUSION: Octreotide administration is associated with an increase in serum sodium among inpatient cirrhotics with hyponatremia, even after accounting for confounders. Prospective randomized controlled trials are warranted.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The anatomy of the transversus abdominis muscle and its aponeurosis is important in transversus abdominis release surgery. We studied the CT anatomy of the transversus abdominis muscle medial to the linea semilunaris at different levels in the abdomen and measured the thickness of this muscle. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we analysed 150 abdominal computed tomography at L1, L3, and L5 vertebral levels corresponding to subxiphoid, umbilical, and suprapubic regions, respectively. The patients were divided into three groups based on age and sex: women aged 15-20 years (nulliparous), women aged 30-60 years (multiparous), and men aged 15-60 years, with each group having 50 patients. We compared the thickness of the TA muscle at the L1 level between men and women and between nulliparous and multiparous women. RESULTS: Transversus abdominis muscle was consistently present medial to the linea semilunaris at L1 vertebral level in the subxiphoid region (150/150). At the L3 vertebral level in the mid-abdomen, only eight patients had the transversus abdominis muscle there (8/150, 5%). At the L5 vertebral level in the suprapubic region, no patient had the transversus abdominis muscle medial to the linea semilunaris. The mean thickness of the transversus abdominis muscle at the L1 level was 3.4 mm, and at the L3 level, it was 1.6 mm. There was no statistically significant difference in the transversus abdominis muscle thickness between the men and women; however, a significant difference was found between the nulliparous and multiparous women, with thinner TA muscle in later. CONCLUSION: There is good transversus abdominis muscle bulk medial to the linea semilunaris for doing transversus abdominis muscle division in the upper abdomen. However, as we move towards the mid-abdomen, we have TA aponeurosis or rarely TA muscle of little bulk.
