ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to understand the mental health experiences of adults 50 years of age and older living in a rural community in British Columbia. METHODS: This study used critical social theory and interpretive description. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 8 adults aged 50 years and older. Participants used digital cameras and spent up to five weeks taking photos of representations of their life as an older adult with a mental health concern in a rural community. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore participants' reasons for taking various photos, unveiling their experiences. Constant comparison was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Four key themes were identified: mental wellbeing (hope, spirituality, and gratitude; nature and losses); stigma; services and supports; and environment. CONCLUSION: There is a significant need for more health care providers for rural older adults' mental health. Additionally, there is a need for integrated services and peer-led supports to address the needs of this population.

ABSTRACT

We investigated whether young and older adults differ on measures of interference (INT), negative priming (NP), and inhibition of return (IOR) on a spatial selective attention task that gradually increased in cognitive demand, from simple perceptual matching to letter identification. For both groups, INT increased and IOR decreased with task demand; while NP remained stable. We found age-related increases in INT, NP, and IOR, independent of task demand. However, only between-groups differences in IOR remained after correcting for age-related slowing in response times. Finally, we found no association between our measures of attention across groups, suggesting negligible overlap between INT, NP, and IOR. Our results indicate that attention is selectively and independently influenced by age and task demands, with both effects dependent on how attention is measured. These findings shed light on the "frontal hypothesis of aging."

ABSTRACT

While the role of the frontal lobes in explicit retrieval tasks is well supported, the findings for implicit tasks are less conclusive. We investigated the role of the frontal lobes in perceptual and conceptual implicit priming. Three memory paradigms were given under both implicit and explicit retrieval instructions, using word fragment completion, picture fragment completion and category exemplar generation. Three groups of individuals with frontal lesions were compared to normal controls: Left dorsolateral lesions (n = 5), right dorsolateral lesions (n = 4), and medial lesions (n = 9). Word fragment completion priming was impaired by left dorsolateral lesions, with other priming tests unaffected by any lesion. Explicit performance showed a different pattern, with category exemplar cued recall impaired by left dorsolateral and medial lesions. These findings support the role of the frontal lobes in both implicit and explicit retrieval mechanisms under certain conditions requiring strategy application or lexical retrieval.
