ABSTRACT

Successful operation for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in a Jehovah's Witness 66-year-old man was presented. The patient was urgently operated for symptomatic AAA. We found during surgery that that aneurysm was ruptured. Bifurcated PTFE aorto-bi-iliac prosthesis was implanted. The patient did not receive any blood or blood-origin products while staying in our Hospital.

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of prolonged rupture of aortic aneurysm was estimated in a group of 65 patients operated for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Patients with chronically contained rupture AAA were hemodynamically stable. Contained rupture of an AAA should be considered in patients presenting unexplained back pain and when radiograms suggest the degenerative changes within spine.

ABSTRACT

86 patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm was assessed by abdominal ultrasound with respect to growth rate. For aneurysms with diameter 3-4 cm, mean growth rate was 0.215 mm per month, for aneurysms 4-5 cm was 0.33 mm per month and for aneurysms with AP diameter bigger than 50 mm the mean growth rate was 0.78 mm per month.

ABSTRACT

Aortoenteric anastomotic fistulae and paraprosthetic aortic-iliac graft infections are rare but devastating and potentially lethal complication of aortic graft surgery. Although the incidence of these complications is reported to be less then 1-4%, the difficulty in diagnosis and management has led to high mortality rates and extensive morbidity. In our opinion computed tomography, 99m Tc-HM-PAO-labeled white blood cell scan and upper GI tract endoscopy are a most useful adjuncts to the diagnosis of all types of aortic graft infection, like paraprosthetic-enteric fistula or graft infection without intestinal communication.

ABSTRACT

69 patients with DVT at least 1 week after acute symptoms was treated with streptokinase (Mean time 4 weeks after acute symptoms). Patients was divided for two groups: 1. with not entire main segments of deep vein occlusion and 2. with entire occlusion of segments of deep vein. Estimation of thrombolytic efficacy was performed by C. Theory. In the 1. group we achieved 23.8% of total obliteration and in 28.6% not entire. In the group 2. we achieved only 24.9% of partial obliteration. Intravenous streptokinase could be effective as well in long lasting deep vein thrombosis.

ABSTRACT

The authors presented results of visual system examination in 28 persons in whom disturbances of blood flow in carotid arteries were diagnosed with colour doppler ultrasonography. The patients underwent routine ophthalmological examination, including kinetic and static perimetry. Ocular signs only, with no neurological changes, were found in 46% of patients. In 21% of cases there were episodes of transient blindness; homonymous hemianopsia occurred in 10%, acute ischaemic optic neuropathy in 11%, and secondary neovascular glaucoma in 14% of patients.

ABSTRACT

In eight patients (two women and six men) aged from 31 to 80 years, extensive resection of the small intestine had been performed before many years. The most frequent causes of the operation were thrombosis and embolism of the superior mesenteric artery (three cases each). In all patients the small intestine was resected, at least partially, and in two patients also hemicolectomy with resection of Bauhin valve was performed. The most frequent complaint reported by the patients is periodical diarrhoea which becomes more intense particularly after fat consumption. Laboratory investigations and absorption tests were carried out in the patients at least one year after the operation. In all patients impaired absorption and hypoalbuminaemia were found. No significant correlation was found between the extent and time after the resection and the degree of intensity of the observed abnormalities.

ABSTRACT

The authors present the results of treatment of six inflammatory aneurysms in the material of 53 aneurysms treated surgically in the years 1987-1992. Direct results of surgical treatment, hospitalization period, and peri-operational complications are the subject of analysis. Peri-operational mortality of the patients with inflammatory aneurysm was higher than that of patients with non-inflammatory aneurysm, undergoing elective surgery. Higher incidence of peri-operational complications indicates higher operational risk of inflammatory aneurysm.
