ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Clarifying the concept of elder self-neglect. METHODS: Researchers investigated the concept of elder self-neglect using a hybrid approach, including theoretical, fieldwork, and final analysis phases. After an extensive review of related literature to define the concept of self-neglect and describe its characteristics, the fieldwork phase was carried out to illustrate its empirical features. Accordingly, it led to the extraction of the elder self-neglect attributes from the first two phases. FINDINGS: Elder self-neglect includes "subjective and objective high-risk behaviors pertinent to physical and spiritual health as well as restricted social interactions, disregarding the living environment, and a lack of compliance to personal hygiene routines that the elderly demonstrate deliberately or unintentionally. Various factors can contribute to such behaviors, including individual features, poor physical performance, elderly-oriented psychological disorders, financial challenges, detrimental stressors, unsuccessful social interactions, inaccessible supportive resources, inadequate educational resources, and inappropriate cultural norms. Consequently, such behaviors result in impaired physical and psychological health status, higher risk of misbehavior, poor quality of life, extra caregiving-treatment burden, and affected mental security in society." CONCLUSION: Given that elder self-neglect is considered a relatively unknown concept in Iran, the study findings can pave the way for future extensive research in the Iranian context by clarifying the concept. It can play a significant role in developing related tools to design more efficient interventions and improve the quality of nursing care services. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The elder self-neglect concept can lead to numerous health-related disorders among the elderly in society. Nurses cannot deal with an unknown phenomenon without exploring and identifying its exact meaning. It is, therefore, imperative to illustrate the different dimensions of this concept to help create a deep understanding among the nurses and perform timely diagnosis and interventional procedures.

BACKGROUND: The decision-making process should be done according to a set of rules and principles so as to be fairly understood. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify the basic principles and rules used by nurses to understand justice in nurse managers' decision-making processes based on a procedural justice model. Research design and participants: This research was a qualitative study based on directed content analysis, which was performed on a group of 15 nurses working in different hospitals in Tehran, Iran. An in-depth semi-structured interview was used as the method of data collection for this study. Ethical consideration: This research has been approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Sciences. The respondents were informed about the aim of the study, about voluntary participation, anonymity and confidentiality. FINDINGS: The results of this study showed that in order to understand procedural justice, nurses use several rules, including: duties organization, managerial support, consistency, bias-suppression, accuracy, correctability, representativeness, and ethicality. CONCLUSION: Nursing leaders must consider the importance of justice rules as one of many strategies to ensure the nurses' perception of fairness in decision-making processes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Resilience is one of the main factors affecting human health, and perceiving its meaning for high-risk adolescents is of particular importance in initiating preventive measures and providing resilience care. OBJECTIVES: This qualitative study was conducted to explain the meaning of resilience in the lived experiences of Iranian adolescents living in governmental residential care facilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted using the hermeneutic phenomenological method. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight adolescents aged 13-17 living in governmental residential care facilities of Tehran province affiliated to the Welfare Organization of Iran who articulated their experiences of resilience. Sampling lasted from May 2014 to July 2015 and continued until new themes were no longer emerging. The researchers analyzed the verbatim transcripts using Van Manen's six-step method of phenomenology. RESULTS: The themes obtained in this study included "going through life's hardships," "aspiring for achievement," "self-protection," "self-reliance," and "spirituality." CONCLUSION: Our study indicates that the meaning of resilience coexists with self-reliance in adolescents' lived experiences. Adolescents look forward to a better future. They always trust God in the face of difficulties and experience resilience by keeping themselves physically and mentally away from difficulties. Adverse and bitter experiences of the past positively affected their positive view on life and its difficulties and also their resilience. The five themes that emerged from the findings describe the results in detail. The findings of this study enable nurses, health administrators, and healthcare providers working with adolescents to help this vulnerable group cope better with their stressful life conditions and improve their health through increasing their capacity for resilience.
