ABSTRACT

Purpose: To analyze the quality of infection control activities, bacteriological data relevant to infection control was evaluated through the microbiological data warehouse networking hospitals in two medical regions. Methods: Data regarding bacterial test results of 19 hospitals were extracted from two microbiological laboratory information data bases. The rate of MRSA among total S. aureus was used as a general indicator of infection control activities. The occupancy rate of nasal or pharyngeal swabs among MRSA-positive bacteriological samples was used as an indicator of attention paid for infection control in intensive care wards. The number of blood culture sets per examined patient was utilized as an indicator for life-long vocational education on updated medical practice relevant to infectious diseases. Results: The rate of MRSA was significantly higher in secondary private hospitals. The occupancy rate of nasal or pharyngeal swabs was significantly higher in tertiary hospitals. The average number of blood culture set per examined patient were 1.55, 1.54 and 1.39 in tertiary, secondary public and secondary private hospitals, respectively; however, there were no statistical differences between groups. Conclusions: Data bases of microbiological test results shared by hospital laboratories are useful for evaluating regional infection control activities.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We set out to see if nutritional assessment(management)using MUST could be useful for patients undergoing outpatient chemotherapy. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 197 patients undergoing outpatient chemotherapy between June 2010 and November 2010. The results of MUST, serum albumin levels, and nutritional intervention were investigated. RESULTS: High- and medium-risk patients requiring nutritional therapy was comprised of 17/78 breast cancer(21. 8%), 16/63 hematologic malignancy(25. 4%), and 26/56 colonic cancer(46. 4%)patients.Moreover, the serum albumin level in high- and medium-risk patients was likely to decrease compared to low-risk patients, suggesting the usefulness of MUST. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It is important to assess nutritional status focusedon simplicity, objectivity, andspeedin outpatient chemotherapy. Assessment of patients' nutritional status and cancer treatment compliance are expected to be improved using MUST.

ABSTRACT

The expression levels of connexin (Cx) proteins, which are gap junction (GJ) components, are often decreased in many cancers, and restoring their levels has been shown to have antitumor effects. Previously, dysfunctional gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) has been observed in several malignant mesotheliomas (MMs), and among the many Cx proteins, Cx43 is prominently expressed in nontumorigenic mesothelial tissues. Therefore, we investigated whether Cx43 upregulation has an antitumor effect on an MM cell line (H28 cell), especially with regard to drug resistance. After treatment with the chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin (CDDP), MM cell viability significantly decreased, and apoptosis induction was observed in Cx43-transfected clones. A specific GJIC inhibitor could not abrogate this effect. On the other hand, the Src protein is known to phosphorylate Cx43, which results in GJIC inhibition. This suggests that Src activity might also be regulated by the hyperexpression of Cx43. In fact, the Src protein level was decreased in Cx43-transfected clones. Moreover, Src inhibition reinforced CDDP cytotoxicity in parental H28 cells. These data suggest that Cx43 could improve the resistance to CDDP in a GJIC-independent manner, which may be partly mediated by the suppression of Src activity.
