ABSTRACT

We report a case of malignant melanoma (MM) derived from cerebriform intradermal naevus (CIN) in a 66-year-old Japanese man. The patient had cutis verticis gyrata (CVG) on the posterior area of the scalp at birth. He noticed a dome-shaped nodule at the centre of the CVG at 66 years of age. Histopathological examination found a nodule of MM arising within an extensive area of intradermal naevus. There was no metastasis to lymph nodes or other organs. To our knowledge, only two cases of CIN in which MM had later developed have been reported. We estimated that the incidence of melanoma from CIN including our case is 4.5% (3 of 67 reported cases), which seems to be comparable to the frequency of malignant alteration of giant pigmented naevi. This suggests that pathological examination is recommended for CVG, and once pathological diagnosis of CIN is confirmed, long clinical follow-ups are necessary for detecting development of MM.

ABSTRACT

The research evaluated the efficacy of an intervention to reduce the onset and extent of binge drinking during the 1st year of college. The approach was on influencing the students before they start college, through their parents, during the critical time between high school graduation and the beginning of college. Specifically, parents were educated about binge drinking and how to convey information to their teens, and then encouraged to talk with their teens just before their teens embarked on their college education. Teens whose parents implemented the intervention materials were compared with a control sample during their 1st semester on drinking outcomes, perceptions about drinking activities, perceived parental and peer approval of drinking, and drinking-related consequences. As anticipated, teens in the treatment condition were significantly different (p < .05) on nearly all outcomes in the predicted directions (e.g., lower drinking tendencies, drinking consequences). The benefits of a parent-based intervention to prevent college drinking are discussed.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the influence of water extracts of CagA-positive or -negative Helicobacter pylori on healing of chronic gastric ulcers and on connexin formation, proliferation and apoptosis, in acetic acid-induced chronic gastric ulcers in rats. METHODS: Acetic acid was used to induce chronic gastric ulcers in rats, and a water extract of H. pylori was given by mouth every day. Connexin 32 formation was assessed using Western blotting as previously described. The frequencies of proliferating cell nuclear antigen staining and of TdT-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labelling were examined. RESULTS: In untreated rats, acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers healed after 14 days and the electrophoretic band corresponding to connexin 32 appeared 4 days after ulcer induction. Treatment with a water extract of H. pylori delayed ulcer healing, with the ulcers remaining unhealed even on the 14th day; healing was delayed more when treatment was with an extract of CagA-positive rather than CagA-negative H. pylori. Connexin 32 appeared earlier when treatment was with a CagA-negative rather than a CagA-positive extract, but in both cases later than in the untreated control group. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen labelling on the fourth day was seen in 14.5% +/- 1.6% of mucosal cells of control group, but in 35.9% +/- 1.4% and 36.5% +/- 1.4% of mucosal cells treated with either VacA(+)CagA(-) and VacA(+)CagA(+) H. pylori extract, respectively. Furthermore, extracts of both H. pylori strains, especially VacA(+)Cag(+) H. pylori promoted apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: A water extract of H. pylori increased both proliferation and apoptosis, which are related to exacerbation and healing of ulcer as well as appearance of connexin 32.

ABSTRACT

A 77-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of a mass lesion in the left lung. The tumor was pulmonary carcinoid associated with sarcoid reactions in the regional lymph nodes and scattered in the resected lung parenchyma. Pulmonary carcinoid with sarcoid reactions is extremely rare. This appears to be the first case report in which tumor-related sarcoid reactions were studded within the tumor-existing lung parenchyma and confirmed not to be within the uninvolved right lung.
