ABSTRACT

We evaluate approaches to vaccine distribution using an agent-based model of human activity and COVID-19 transmission calibrated to detailed trends in cases, hospitalizations, deaths, seroprevalence, and vaccine breakthrough infections in Florida, USA. We compare the incremental effectiveness for four different distribution strategies at four different levels of vaccine supply, starting in late 2020 through early 2022. Our analysis indicates that the best strategy to reduce severe outcomes would be to actively target high disease-risk individuals. This was true in every scenario, although the advantage was greatest for the intermediate vaccine availability assumptions and relatively modest compared to a simple mass vaccination approach under high vaccine availability. Ring vaccination, while generally the most effective strategy for reducing infections, ultimately proved least effective at preventing deaths. We also consider using age group as a practical surrogate measure for actual disease-risk targeting; this approach also outperforms both simple mass distribution and ring vaccination. We find that quantitative effectiveness of a strategy depends on whether effectiveness is assessed after the alpha, delta, or omicron wave. However, these differences in absolute benefit for the strategies do not change the ranking of their performance at preventing severe outcomes across vaccine availability assumptions.

ABSTRACT

In this research, we developed a biochar-based fertilizer using biogas slurry and biochar derived from lignocellulosic agro-residues. Biogas slurry was obtained through the anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (fresh vegetable biomass and/or prepared food), while biochars were derived from residues from quinoa, maize, rice, and sugarcane. The biochar-based fertilizers were prepared using an impregnation process, where the biogas slurry was mixed with each of the raw biochars. Subsequently, we characterized the N, P and K concentrations of the obtained biochar-based fertilizers. Additionally, we analyzed their surface properties using SEM/EDS and FTIR and conducted a slow-release test on these biochar-based fertilizers to assess their capability to gradually release nutrients. Lastly, a bioassay using cucumber plants was conducted to determine the N, P, and K bioavailability. Our findings revealed a significant correlation (r > 0.67) between the atomic O/C ratio, H/C ratio, cation exchange capacity, surface area, and the base cations concentration with N, P, and/or K adsorption on biochar. These properties, in turn, were linked to the capability of the biochar-based fertilizer to release nutrients in a controlled manner. The biochar-based fertilizer derived from corn residues showed <15 % release of N, P and K at 24 h. Utilization of these biochar-based fertilizers had a positive impact on the mineral nutrition of cucumber plants, resulting in an average increase of 61 % in N, 32 % in P, and 19 % in K concentrations. Our results underscore the potential of biochar-based fertilizers in controlled nutrient release and enhanced plant nutrition. Integration of biochar and biogas slurry offers a promising and sustainable approach for NPK recovery and fertilizer production in agriculture. This study presents an innovative and sustainable approach combining the use of biochar for NPK recovery from biogas slurry and its use as a biochar-based fertilizer in agriculture.

ABSTRACT

Background: Narrow-Band imaging International Colorectal Endoscopic (NICE) could reduce histopathology study requirements in colorectal polyp evaluation. Local and regional studies are required to validate its utility. Objectives: To evaluate concordance between NICE classification and histopathology. Design: Prospective analytic study performed in the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio, Bogotá (Colombia) between 2021 and 2022. Methods: Concordance between NICE I, II and III classification and histopathology [Hyperplastic Polyp (HP), adenoma and deep submucosal invasive cancer (DSIC)] was evaluated using weighted kappa. Diagnostic performance was evaluated for NICE I-II versus NICE III for DSIC versus adenoma/HP. A subgroup analysis was performed for polyps ⩾10 mm and those located in the rectum, sigmoid, and left colon. Results: A total of 238 polyps from 135 patients were evaluated. Median age 67 years (IQR 58.5-74.5), 54.4% males. 23 (17.1%) had ⩾3 polyps. Of polyps, 52.1% were located on rectum, sigmoid and left colon. A total of 182 (76.5%) were <10 mm. NICE and histopathology evidenced a fair-moderate concordance (quadratic weighted kappa 0.36, linear weighted kappa 0.43). NICE classification (NICE I-II versus III) compared to histopathology (DSIC versus adenoma/HP) evidenced a sensitivity of 90.9% and specificity of 99.1%. For DSIC diagnosis specificity was ⩾95% on polyps ⩾10 mm and those left sided located. Conclusion: NICE and histopathology concordance is suboptimal. However, NICE III for DSIC diagnosis evidence good specificity. Therefore, NICE III polyps require a prompt histopathological evaluation and follow-up. Good operative characteristics stand in polyps ⩾10 mm and left sided located. NBI formal training is recommended in gastroenterology units in Latin America.


Concordance between colonoscopy polyp evaluation with NBI optical technology and histopathology evaluation Most colorectal cancer are developed from polyps. A proper polyp evaluation is required to orientate which polyp could be a potential neoplasia. However, a definitive diagnosis is made according to histopathology evaluation. On the other hand, Narrow-Band imaging International Colorectal Endoscopic (NICE) classification based on colonoscopy could predict neoplastic polyps and drive therapeutic decisions. Our tertiary center study in Colombia evidence that NICE classification predicts adequately neoplastic polyps but is suboptimal to categorize low risk polyps. Therefore, histopathology polyp evaluation should be still recommended and NBI formal training is recommended in gastroenterology units in Latin -America.

Our analysis indicates that the best strategy to reduce severe outcomes is to actively target high disease-risk individuals. This was true in every scenario, although the advantage was greatest for the middle-income-country availability assumptions, and relatively modest compared to a simple mass vaccination approach for rapid, high levels of vaccine availability. Ring vaccination, while generally the most effective strategy for reducing infections, ultimately proved least effective at preventing deaths. We also consider using age group as a practical, surrogate measure for actual disease-risk targeting; this approach still outperforms both simple mass distribution and ring vaccination. We also find that the magnitude of strategy effectiveness depends on when assessment occurs (e.g., after delta vs. after omicron variants). However, these differences in absolute benefit for the strategies do not change the ranking of their performance at preventing severe outcomes across vaccine availability assumptions.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The omega-3 fatty acids (ω3), EPA and DHA, have been described for their beneficial effects on metabolism and inflammation. In addition, they are interesting tools in the treatment of acute liver disease. This investigation was conducted to assess the effect of EPA+DHA administration before partial ischemia (IR) on survival and liver injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were supplemented for 7 days with ω3 [EPA (270mg/kg) and DHA (180mg/kg)]; controls received saline solution. After EPA+DHA supplementation, liver IR was induced by temporarily occluding the blood supply for 1h, followed up by 48h of reperfusion. Control animals were subjected to sham laparotomy. RESULTS: Previous to IR, the EPA+DHA administration improved the rate and prolonged the survival time by decreasing the AST and ALT levels and improving liver degenerative changes generated by the IR, which decreased TNF-α and IL-1ß. In addition, IL-10 increased at 20h with a tendency to normalize at 48h. The IR group had no differences in the IL-10 levels compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: The ω3 supplementation could prevent and promote the restoration of the liver tissue and significantly improve the survival rate in rats at 48h.

ABSTRACT

We studied HLA class I (HLA-A, -B) and class II (HLA-DRB1, -DQB1) alleles by PCR-SSP based typing in a total of 1101 Ecuadorian individuals from three regions of the country, the Coastal region, the Andean region, and the Amazonian region, to obtain information regarding allelic and haplotypic frequencies and their linkage disequilibrium. We find that the most frequent HLA haplotypes with significant linkage disequilibrium in those populations are HLA-A*24∼B*35∼DRB1*04∼DQB1*03:02, A*02∼B*35∼DRB1*04∼DQB1*03:02, A*24∼B*35∼DRB1*14∼DQB1*03:01, A*02∼B*35∼DRB1*14∼DQB1*03:01 and A*02∼B*40:02∼DRB1*04∼DQB1*03:02. The only non-Native American haplotype with frequency >1% shared by all groups was A*29∼B*44∼DRB1*07∼DQB1*02. Admixture estimates obtained by a maximum likelihood method using HLA-B as genetic estimator revealed that the main genetic components for this sample of mixed-ancestry Ecuadorians are Native American (ranging from 52.86% to 63.83%) and European (from 28.95% to 46.54%), while an African genetic component was only apparent in the Coastal region (18.19%). Our findings provide a starting point for the study of population immunogenetics of Ecuadorian populations.
