ABSTRACT

The stability and accuracy of the clock signal are crucial for the proper operation of various electronic devices and systems, as they directly impact system performance. In high-speed electronic systems, the clock signal is susceptible to interference by crosstalk. Therefore, evaluating the performance of the clock signal under crosstalk disturbance is important. Jitter, commonly used as an indicator to assess the degree of this interference, plays a significant role in this evaluation. In this paper, a method is proposed for assessing crosstalk-induced jitter (CIJ) based on scattering parameters. To verify the effectiveness of the method, CIJ was measured for clock signals with frequencies of 25, 100, and 156.25 MHz. In addition, the experimental results are well in agreement with the theoretical model. Thus, the potential application of this method is to assess the performance of circuits or electronic systems.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This research investigates trends pertaining to the prevalence of low fruit and vegetable consumption among the labor force population in China. The study considered data derived from four nationally representative cross-sectional surveys. Methods: The data under review for this study was derived from the China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance (CCDRFS) carried out in 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2018, correspondingly. We utilized a food frequency questionnaire to evaluate the quantity and frequency of fruit and vegetable consumption. The estimated prevalence of low fruit and vegetable consumption was calculated for each survey, while considering factors such as sex, age, location, and socioeconomic status (SES). Participants' SES was ascertained via latent class analysis, serving to identify distinct classes based on criteria such as education, occupation, and household income per capita. Logistic regression was deployed to determine the statistical significance of trends. Results: From 2010 to 2018, there was a notable increase in the average daily consumption of vegetables and fruits among the working population, rising from 418.6 g/day to 491.8 g/day (P<0.01 for trend). During the same period, the prevalence of low fruit and vegetable intake declined from 51.1% to 43.5% [P<0.001 for trend; -1.6% average annual percent change (AAPC)]. This downward trend was prevalent across genders, however, certain subgroups of adults (e.g., those living in rural areas or those of low SES) saw stable consumption levels throughout this period (P>0.05 for trend). Conclusion: Over the past nine years, there has been a notable decline in the prevalence of low fruit and vegetable consumption among the labor force population in China. Moreover, the comparatively deficient intake of fruits and vegetables evident among individuals of lower SES warrants further attention.

ABSTRACT

Fruit color is an intuitive quality of horticultural crops that can be used as an evaluation criterion for fruit ripening and is an important factor affecting consumers' purchase choices. In this study, a genetic population from the cross of green peel 'Qidong' and purple peel '8 guo' revealed that the purple to green color of eggplant peel is dominant and controlled by a pair of alleles. Bulked segregant analysis (BSA), SNP haplotyping, and fine genetic mapping delimited candidate genes to a 350 kb region of eggplant chromosome 10 flanked by markers KA2381 and CA8828. One ANS gene (EGP22363) was predicted to be a candidate gene based on gene annotation and sequence alignment of the 350-kb region. Sequence analysis revealed that a single base mutation of 'T' to 'C' on the exon green peel, which caused hydrophobicity to become hydrophilic serine, led to a change in the three-level spatial structure. Additionally, EGP22363 was more highly expressed in purple peels than in green peels. Collectively, EGP22363 is a strong candidate gene for anthocyanin biosynthesis in purple eggplant peels. These results provide important information for molecular marker-assisted selection in eggplants, and a basis for analyzing the regulatory pathways responsible for anthocyanin biosynthesis in eggplants.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In China, the effects of heavy metals and metalloids (HMMs) on liver health are not consistently documented, despite their prevalent environmental presence. OBJECTIVE: Our research assessed the association between HMMs and liver function biomarkers in a comprehensive sample of Chinese adults. METHODS: We analyzed data from 9445 participants in the China National Human Biomonitoring survey. Blood and urine were evaluated for HMM concentrations, and liver health was gauged using serum albumin (ALB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) metrics. Various statistical methods were employed to understand the relationship between 11 HMMs and liver function, adjusting for multiple factors. We also explored interactions with alcohol intake, gender, and age. RESULTS: Among HMMs, selenium in blood [weighted geometric mean (GM) = 95.56 µg/L] and molybdenum in urine (GM = 46.44 µg/L) showed the highest concentrations, while lead in blood (GM = 21.92 µg/L) and arsenic in urine (GM = 19.80 µg/L) had the highest levels among risk HMMs. Manganese and thallium consistently indicated potential risk factor to liver in both sample types, while selenium displayed potential liver protection. Blood HMM mixtures were negatively associated with ALB (ß = -0.614, 95% CI: -0.809, -0.418) and positively with AST (ß = 0.701, 95% CI: 0.290, 1.111). No significant associations were found in urine HMM mixtures. Manganese, tin, nickel, and selenium were notable in blood mixture associations, with selenium and cobalt being significant in urine. The relationship of certain HMMs varied based on alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION: This research highlights the complex relationship between HMM exposure and liver health in Chinese adults, particularly emphasizing metals like manganese, thallium, and selenium. The results suggest a need for public health attention to low dose HMM exposure and underscore the potential benefits of selenium for liver health. Further studies are essential to establish causality.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress and inflammatory responses play essential roles in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Electroacupuncture (EA) is widely used as a rehabilitation method for stroke in China; however, the underlying mechanism of action remains unclear. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) has been reported to impact anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the role of PPAR-γ in EA-mediated effects and aimed to illuminate its possible mechanisms in cerebral I/R. METHODS: In this study, male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) injury were treated with EA at LI11 and ST36 for 30 min daily after MCAO/R for seven consecutive days. The neuroprotective effects of EA were measured by neurobehavioral evaluation, triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining, hematoxylin-eosin staining and transmission electron microscopy. Oxidative stress, inflammatory factors, neural apoptosis and microglial activation were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunofluorescence and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Western blotting was used to assess PPAR-γ-mediated signaling. RESULTS: We found that EA significantly alleviated cerebral I/R-induced infarct volume, decreased neurological scores and inhibited I/R-induced oxidative stress, inflammatory responses and microglial activation. EA also increased PPAR-γ protein expression. Furthermore, the protective effects of EA were reversed by injection of the PPAR-γ antagonist T0070907. CONCLUSION: EA attenuates cerebral I/R injury by regulating oxidative stress, neuronal death and neuroinflammation via stimulation of PPAR-γ.

ABSTRACT

The often-overlooked importance of foliar absorption on the plant uptake of organic pollutants was investigated by an exposure chamber test. Rice seedlings were exposed to organophosphate esters (OPEs) through 8 scenarios arranged from 3 major uptake pathways: root uptake via solution, foliar uptake via gas, and foliar uptake via particles, to identify the contributions of these 3 uptake pathways and their influences on the translocation and metabolism of OPEs in rice. The concentration of OPEs in rice tissues showed an "additive effect" with the increase of exposure pathways. OPEs in rice shoots mainly originated from foliar uptake through particle (29.6 %-63.5 %) and gaseous (28.5 %-49.4 %) absorptions rather than root uptake (7.86 %-24.2 %) under the exposure condition. In comparison with stomal absorption, wax layer penetration was the main pathway for most OPEs to enter into leaves, especially for those compounds with high octanol-air partition coefficients. Although the subcellular distributions of OPEs in the rice tissues of the foliar exposure were slightly different from those of the root exposure, hydrophobic OPEs were mainly stored in the cell wall with hydrophilic OPEs mainly in the cytosol. The translocation of OPEs from the exposed tissue to the unexposed tissue were significantly negatively correlated with their octanol-water partition coefficients, but their basipetal translocation were limited. The result suggested that the translocation of OPEs within rice is prioritized over their degradation. This study deepens our understanding of the processes behind OPE uptake by rice and highlights the importance of foliar uptake, especially for those via particle absorption.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Weeds are one of the main factors affecting crop growth, making weed control a pressing global problem. In recent years, interest in intelligent mechanical weed-control equipment has been growing. Methods: We propose a semantic segmentation network, RDS_Unet, based on corn seedling fields built upon an improved U-net network. This network accurately recognizes weeds even under complex environmental conditions, facilitating the use of mechanical weeding equipment for reducing weed density. Our research utilized field-grown maize seedlings and accompanying weeds in expansive fields. We integrated the U-net semantic segmentation network, employing ResNeXt-50 for feature extraction in the encoder stage. In the decoder phase, Layer 1 uses deformable convolution with adaptive offsets, replacing traditional convolution. Furthermore, concurrent spatial and channel squeeze and excitation is incorporated after ordinary convolutional layers in Layers 2, 3, and 4. Results: Compared with existing classical semantic segmentation models such as U-net, Pspnet, and DeeplabV3, our model demonstrated superior performance on our specially constructed seedling grass semantic segmentation dataset, CGSSD, during the maize seedling stage. The Q6mean intersection over union (MIoU), precision, and recall of this network are 82.36%, 91.36%, and 89.45%, respectively. Compared to those of the original network, the proposed network achieves improvements of 5.91, 3.50, and 5.49 percentage points in the MIoU, precision, and recall, respectively. The detection speed is 12.6 frames per second. In addition, ablation experiments further confirmed the impactful contribution of each improvement component on the overall semantic segmentation performance. Discussion: This study provides theoretical and technical support for the automated operation of intelligent mechanical weeding devices.

ABSTRACT

This paper reports the discovery that water can trigger a peculiar nuclear reaction and produce energy. Cavitation may induce unusual reactions through implosion of water vapor bubbles. Many of this research has been published formally or informally. We have conducted experiments using two reactor types made from multiple-pipe heat exchanger and found that the heat exchange process of water produces peculiar excess heat and abnormally high pressure leading to rupture of the reactor. Recently, we have tested another eight reactors. Interestingly, these reactors produce non-condensable gas. We suspected that they include 22Ne and CO2. We used a mass spectrometer (MS) to analyze 14 gas samples collected from 8 reactors, including ten samples showing a coefficient of performance COPx > 1.05 (with excess heat) and four having COPx < 1.05 (without excess heat). Several methods were adopted to identify the gas content. For CO2 identification, two methods are employed. For 22Ne identification, three methods are employed. All the results confirm that isotope 22Ne and regular CO2 really exist in the output gas from reactors determined to have excess heat. We conjecture a possible mechanism to produce 22Ne and CO2 and find out that 12C and isotope 17O are the intermediate. They finally form isotope gases containing 17O, including H2O-17 (heavy-oxygen water), isotope O2 (16O-17O), and isotope CO2 (12C-16O-17O). In the excess heat producing reactors, all these gasses were detected by MS in the absence of 20Ne and 21Ne. The observed isotope gases produced from reactors having excess heat verifies that water can trigger a peculiar nuclear reaction and produce energy.

ABSTRACT

The broad application of ionic liquids (ILs) has been hindered by uncertainties surrounding their ecotoxicity. In this work, a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) model was devised to predict the inhibition of ILs towards the activity of AChE, employing both Random Forest (RF) and eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning approaches. Fourteen kings of essential molecular feature descriptors were screened from an initial roster of 244 descriptors through the application of a feature importance index and they showed a significant impact on the activity of AChE activity. The two models based solely on the 14 most critical molecular descriptors could maintain model's robustness and reliability. The correlation analysis between these 14 descriptors and the inhibition of AChE activity revealed the potential impact of the molecular characteristics on ILs toxicity. The results underscored the main influence of cations in ILs on the inhibitory activity towards the AChE enzyme. Specifically, cations exhibiting hydrophobicity properties were found to exert more potent inhibitory effects on the AChE enzyme. In addition, some other properties of the cations, such as the degree of branching, atomic weight and partial charge also modulated their inhibition potential. This study enhances the comprehension of the structure-activity relationship between ILs and AChE inhibition, providing a reference for designing safer and greener ILs.

ABSTRACT

A stringent analysis of the biocompatibility of MXene is a necessary condition for assessing the biological risk of MXene. Owing to high surface free energy, MXene is capable of adsorbing a large amount of blood proteins to form MXene-protein corona complexes, however, a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between MXene and cellular physiological systems remains limited. Therefore, we investigated the cellular uptake and cytotoxicity effect of MXene Ti3C2Tx and PEGylation Ti3C2Tx mediated by human serum protein corona in THP-1 cells. It was found that PEGylation can alter the interaction between Ti3C2Tx and serum proteins, inducing a significant transformation in the fingerprint of the protein corona. Following protein corona formation, both Ti3C2Tx and PEGylated Ti3C2Tx predominantly accumulated at lysosomal sites within THP-1 cells. Further analysis revealed that clathrin-mediated endocytosis was the primary mechanism of Ti3C2Tx internalization by THP-1 cells. There was no significant effect on cell viability. However, we found that Ti3C2Tx plays a dual role as both a stimulus and scavenger of ROS within THP-1 cells, influenced by its PEGylation and the formation of a protein corona. This study provides important insights for biocompatibility evaluation and rational design of nanoproducts based on Ti3C2Tx in the future.

ABSTRACT

Extensive use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has resulted in their widespread presence in natural waters. Concern for public health requires reliable measurement methods for determining their distribution and risks. Here, a sampling method based on diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) was developed for measuring PFASs in drinking water sources. Fluorinated graphite (FG) particles were used to prepare the DGT binding gel for selective enrichment of trace PFASs in an aqueous environment. The FG-DGT method did not show sensitivity to relevant environmental parameters including pH (5.0-9.0), ionic strength (0.001-0.5 M), or DOM concentration (0-30 mg/L). The FG-DGT had enough capacity for deployment of up to four months. Six traditional and emerging PFASs including PFOS, PFOA, PFHpA, PFHxS, PFNA, and 6:2 FTSA at the ng/L level were detected in two major reservoirs serving as public drinking water sources by FG-DGT method coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). PFOA appeared at the highest observed concentrations in the drinking water sources. The research demonstrates that FG-DGT is an effective and efficient tool for monitoring PFASs in drinking water.

ABSTRACT

Tumor-initiating cells (TICs) reprogram their metabolic features to meet their bioenergetic, biosynthetic, and redox demands. Our previous study established a role for wild-type isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1WT) as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but how IDH1WT modulates NSCLC progression remains elusive. Here, we report that IDH1WT activates serine biosynthesis by enhancing the expression of phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PHGDH) and phosphoserine aminotransferase 1 (PSAT1), the first and second enzymes of de novo serine synthetic pathway. Augmented serine synthesis leads to GSH/ROS imbalance and supports pyrimidine biosynthesis, maintaining tumor initiation capacity and enhancing gemcitabine chemoresistance. Mechanistically, we identify that IDH1WT interacts with and stabilizes PHGDH and fragile X-related protein-1 (FXR1) by impeding their association with the E3 ubiquitin ligase parkin by coimmunoprecipitation assay and proximity ligation assay. Subsequently, stabilized FXR1 supports PSAT1 mRNA stability and translation, as determined by actinomycin D chase experiment and in vitro translation assay. Disrupting IDH1WT-PHGDH and IDH1WT-FXR1 interactions synergistically reduces NSCLC stemness and sensitizes NSCLC cells to gemcitabine and serine/glycine-depleted diet therapy in lung cancer xenograft models. Collectively, our findings offer insights into the role of IDH1WT in serine metabolism, highlighting IDH1WT as a potential therapeutic target for eradicating TICs and overcoming gemcitabine chemoresistance in NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

Sixty Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly divided into sham-operated groups and five ovariectomy (OVX) subgroups. Rats subjected to sham and OVX were treated with the vehicle, alendronate, and Zuogui Wan (ZGW) at the doses of low, medium and high lyophilized powder daily for 3 months, respectively. The gene or protein expression of NK1R, PPAR γ, and OSX were assayed by either quantitative polymerase chain reaction or Western blot analysis. The results showed that compared with the OVX group, ZGW could reduce the level of PPARγ and increase the levels of OSX and. Meanwhile, ZGW could prevent bone loss. In addition, we found ZGW upregulated for the NK1R mRNA or protein expression by promoting the expression level of transcription factor FoxO3 and increasing its binding to the NK1R promoter region -700/-200 sequence. These results suggest that the regulation of FoxO3 and NK1R played a role and contributed to the mechanism of ZGW underlying the increase in bone mass in the OVX rat model.

ABSTRACT

Blastocystis sp. is an important gastrointestinal parasite with global distribution, prevalent in humans, farmed animals, and wildlife. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of Blastocystis sp. in Asiatic brush-tailed porcupines (Atherurus macrourus), bamboo rats (Rhizomys pruinosus), and masked palm civets (Paguma larvata) in Hainan Province, China. A total of 900 fecal samples were collected from three farmed animal species including 257 porcupines, 360 rats, and 283 civets. Genomic DNA was extracted from each fecal sample and Blastocystis sp. was detected by PCR at the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using the maximum likelihood method. Blastocystis sp. was detected in 47 (5.2%) fecal samples: 12 (4.7%) Asiatic brush-tailed porcupines, 8 (2.2%) bamboo rats, and 27 (9.5%) masked palm civets. Three known Blastocystis sp. subtypes, including ST1, ST4, ST5, and one unnamed subtype (unST), were found in one, 19, 26, and one animal, respectively. Subtypes ST4 and unST were detected in porcupines, ST4 in rats, and ST1 and ST5 in civets. Our results suggest that the three farmed animal species reported in this study could serve as reservoirs for potentially zoonotic Blastocystis sp. subtypes and transmit this parasite to humans, other farmed animals, and wildlife.

ABSTRACT

Herein, we propose a label-free chemiresistive sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of microcystin (MC)-LR in water samples. The sensor uses a layer-by-layer (LBL) assembled conductive film consisting of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets as the sensing channel. It is further modified by using an aptamer for the specific recognition of MC-LR. The response signal is based on the change in resistance of the conductive channel upon binding of MC-LR with the aptamer. Our novel strategy is the first concept proposed for immobilizing the aptamer containing -SH on the channel surface through a Ti-S bond under weakly alkaline condition. The resulting sensor is highly sensitive and stable for the detection of MC-LR, with a detection limit of 0.18 ng L-1 and a wide linear range from 1 to 104 ng L-1. We used the sensor to continuously monitor MC-LR released by cultivated Microcystis aeruginosa, showing a strong relationship between MC-LR and cell density. Furthermore, the sensor was successfully used to measure MC-LR in freshwater lakes with moderate algal blooms, and the results agreed well with those obtained by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. The present study provides a reliable method for highly sensitive and selective detection of MC-LR in environmental waters.

ABSTRACT

Exopolysaccharide (EPS), as a secondary metabolite of microorganisms, has been commonly used in the dairy industry to replace the traditional stabilizers. However, the EPS production by microorganism is generally low, which limits its application. A litchi polysaccharide (Lzp2-2) with the promoting effect on EPS production by Weissella confusa was purified. The SEM and FT-IR analysis indicated that Lzp2-2 displayed a compact netlike structure and typical bands of carbohydrates. The structure of Lzp2-2 was further elucidated, which was comprised of a major backbone structure [→3)-ß-D-Galp-(1→6)-ß-D-Galp-(1 â†’ 6)-ß-D-Galp-(1 â†’ 3)-ß-D-Glcp-(1 â†’ 6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 â†’ 3)-α-D-Glcp-(1→] linked with two side chains [α-L-Araf-(1 â†’ 5)-α-L-Araf-(1→, and ß-D-Glcp-(1 â†’ or α-L-Araf-(1→] at the O-3 and O-6) of ß-D-Galp-(1→, respectively. Finally, Lzp2-2 was applied as an additive to the medium of yoghurt fermented by W. confusa. The results indicated Lzp2-2 not only promoted the EPS production to improve the viscosity, texture and mouthfeel of yoghurt, but also facilitated the generation of other secondary metabolites (volatile organic compounds), thus elevating the flavor of yoghurt.

ABSTRACT

Sex determination evolved to control the development of unisexual flowers. In agriculture, it conditions how plants are cultivated and bred. We investigated how female flowers develop in monoecious cucurbits. We discovered in melon, Cucumis melo, a mechanism in which ethylene produced in the carpel is perceived in the stamen primordia through spatially differentially expressed ethylene receptors. Subsequently, the CmEIN3/CmEIL1 ethylene signalling module, in stamen primordia, activates the expression of CmHB40, a transcription factor that downregulates genes required for stamen development and upregulates genes associated with organ senescence. Investigation of melon genetic biodiversity revealed a haplotype, originating in Africa, altered in EIN3/EIL1 binding to CmHB40 promoter and associated with bisexual flower development. In contrast to other bisexual mutants in cucurbits, CmHB40 mutations do not alter fruit shape. By disentangling fruit shape and sex-determination pathways, our work opens up new avenues in plant breeding.

ABSTRACT

Background: The prevalence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) is gradually increasing in the global scope, causing serious burden to patients and society, which is an important public health problem. Objective: To analyze the distribution and trend of MDROs and provide a reference for hospital infection control. Methods: Collected data on MDROs infections among inpatients in a Grade III Level A hospital in Suzhou from 2015 to 2021, including drug-resistant bacteria strains and specimen sources, etc. Mantel-Haenszel χ2 test was used to evaluate the trend of infection rates over the years and SPSS version 26.0 was used for statistics analysis. Results: The hospital infection rate showed an overall downward trend across the seven-year period, ranging from 1.53% to 2.10%. According to the analysis of change of drug-resistant bacteria strains, the highest infection rate was carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRABA) (63.74%), followed by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (46.37%), carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPAE) (24.87%), carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) (13.14%) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) (0.42%). The results of Mantel-Haenszel χ2 test showed that there was a linear relationship between the detection rate of CRE and CRPAE and the time (P<0.001), but the correlation was not strong (R = 0.136; R = 0.139). The overall detection rate of the five pathogens also increased (P<0.001). The majority of the specimens, mainly from sputum, airway secretions, and midstream urine, had a detection rate of over 70%. Conclusion: Our data showed that the detection rate of MDROs generally increased from 2015 to 2021, although the hospital infection rate displayed a declining trend. Among the detection rate MDROs, the highest was CRABA, and the lowest was VRE. It is necessary to enhance the prevention, control, and management of MDROs infections in the clinical practice.
