ABSTRACT

From June 1994 to June 1996, 18 fledgling American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos brachyrhynchos) from multiple locations on Long Island, New York, were presented with signs of metabolic bone disease characterized by folding fractures of the proximal tibiotarsus. Plasma alkaline phosphatase levels were elevated, and the calcium/phosphorus ratio and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-(OH)D3) levels were decreased. The histopathologic diagnosis was parathyroid hyperplasia and generalized osteodystrophia fibrosa. A diet low in bioavailable calcium and/or vitamin D3 was the probable cause. Also, exposure to xenobiotics could have contributed to the depression of 25-(OH)D3 levels.

ABSTRACT

From May 1987 to September 1994, 19 eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina) originating from scattered locations on Long Island, New York (USA) were presented with one or more of the following signs: listlessness, ocular and nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and otitis media. Numerous species of bacteria and yeast were isolated by aerobic culture. Histopathologic findings confirmed chronic active bacterial infections. Toxicologic analyses of livers revealed elevated concentrations of chlordane metabolites in two diseased turtles. A third turtle liver contained residues of endosulfan sulfate. Immunosuppressive effects of low-level exposure to organochlorines, including chlordane and endosulfan, could be involved in the pathogenesis of the observed infections.

ABSTRACT

Since its first appearance in 1984, avian paramyxovirus type 1 has remained an enzootic disease in racing pigeons on Long Island, New York. The clinical presentation of the disease in the autumn of 1987 suggests a decrease in the severity and incidence of neurological signs, with the chief complaint being watery droppings accompanied by poor racing performance. Diagnosis is based upon serology, using hemagglutination-inhibition tests with Newcastle disease or paramyxovirus type 1 virus.

ABSTRACT

An outbreak of a neurological disease in pigeons caused by avian paramyxovirus type I occurred in the New York metropolitan area in 1984. It was characterized clinically by head tremors, paresis of the wings and legs, ataxia, torticollis, and loose droppings. Clinical pathologic evaluation revealed anemia and elevated plasma transaminase enzymes. Mortality was virtually 100% in juvenile pigeons, whereas the adults generally experienced much lower morbidity and mortality.

ABSTRACT

Post-mortem examination of a stranded Atlantic white-sided dolphin (lagenorynchus acutus) revealed congested lungs, sanguinous fluid in the peritoneal cavity, and an oral wound. Histopathologic findings were acute necrotizing hepatitis and acute focal bronchopneumonia. Vibrio alginolyticus was isolated from the blood and other organs.
