ABSTRACT

Electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) was applied by precisely controlling the the primary electron beam incident direction of the crystal plane in scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the dislocation contrast in steel materials was investigated in detail via SEM/ECCI. The dislocation contrast was observed near a channeling condition, where the incident electron beam direction of the crystal plane varied, and the backscattered electron intensity reached a local minimum. Comparing the dislocation contrasts in the visualized electron channeling contrast (ECC) images and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images, the positions of all dislocation lines were coincident. During the SEM/ECCI observation, the dislocation contrast varied depending on the incident electron beam direction of the crystal plane and accelerating voltages, and optimal conditions existed. When the diffraction condition g and the Burgers vector b of dislocation satisfied the condition g b = 0, the screw dislocation contrast in the ECC image disappeared. An edge dislocation line was wider than a screw dislocation line. Thus, the SEM/ECCI method can be used for dislocation characterization and the strain field evaluation around dislocation, like the TEM method. The depth information of SEM/ECCI, where the channeling condition is strictly satisfied, can be obtained from dislocation contrast deeper than 5ξg, typically used for depth of SEM/ECCI.

ABSTRACT

We report the development of a fully automatic large-volume 3D electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) system (ELAVO 3D), consisting of a scanning electron microscope (ZEISS crossbeam XB 1540) with a dedicated sample holder, an adapted polishing automaton (Saphir X-change, QATM), a collaborative robotic arm (Universal Robots UR5), and several in-house built devices. The whole system is orchestrated by an in-house designed software, which is also able to track the process and report errors. Except for the case of error, the system runs without any user interference. For the measurement of removal thickness, the samples are featured with markers put on the perpendicular lateral surface, cut by plasma focused ion beam (PFIB) milling. The individual effects of both 1 µm diamond suspension and oxide polishing suspension polishing were studied in detail. Coherent twin grain boundaries (GBs) were used as an internal standard to check the removal rates measured by the side markers. The two methods for Z-spacing measurements disagreed by about 10%, and the inaccurate calibration of the PFIB system was found to be the most probable reason for this discrepancy. The angular accuracy of the system was determined to be ∼2.5°, which can be significantly improved with more accurate Z-spacing measurements. When reconstructed grain boundary meshes are sufficiently smoothed, an angular resolution of ±4° is achieved. In a 3D EBSD dataset of a size of 587 × 476 × 72 µm3, we focused on the investigation of coincidence site lattice ∑9 GBs. While bearing predominantly a pure tilt character, ∑9 GBs can be categorized into three groups based on correlative 3D morphologies and crystallography.

ABSTRACT

Background We investigated the early postoperative effect of percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty on ambulatory blood pressure (BP) and the circadian characteristics of natriuresis and autonomic nerve activity. Methods and Results A total of 64 patients with hypertension with hemodynamically significant renal artery stenosis (mean age, 60.0±21.0 years; 31.3% fibromuscular dysplasia) who underwent angioplasty were included, and circadian characteristics of natriuresis as well as heart rate variability indices, including 24-hour BP, low-frequency and high-frequency (HF) components, and the percentage of differences between adjacent normal R-R intervals >50 ms were evaluated using an oscillometric device, TM-2425, both at baseline and 3 days after angioplasty. In both the fibromuscular dysplasia and atherosclerotic stenosis groups, 24-hour systolic BP (fibromuscular dysplasia, -19±14; atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis, -11±9 mm Hg), percentage of differences between adjacent normal R-R intervals >50 ms, HF, brain natriuretic peptide, and nighttime urinary sodium excretion decreased (all P<0.01), and heart rate increased (both P<0.05) after angioplasty. In both groups, revascularization increased the night/day ratios of percentage of differences between adjacent normal R-R intervals >50 ms (both P<0.01) and HF, and decreased those of low frequency/HF (all P<0.05) and nighttime urinary sodium excretion (fibromuscular dysplasia, 1.17±0.15 to 0.78±0.09; atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis, 1.37±0.10 to 0.99±0.06, both P<0.01). Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that a 1-SD increase in baseline low frequency/HF was associated with at least a 15% decrease in 24-hour systolic BP after angioplasty (odds ratio, 2.30 [95% CI, 1.03-5.67]; P<0.05). Conclusions Successful revascularization results in a significant BP decrease in the early postoperative period. Intrarenal perfusion might be a key modulator of the circadian patterns of autonomic nerve activity and natriuresis, and pretreatment heart rate variability evaluation seems to be important for treatment success.
