ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to develop criteria for differential diagnostics of peripheral vestibular and brainstem-cerebellar syndrome based on the analysis of characteristics of evoked vestibular myogenic potentials. A total of 59 patients presenting with unilateral peripheral vestibular syndrome (PVS), 60 patients with demyelinizing disease of CNS, and 20 healthy subjects were available for the examination by the method of evoked vestibular myogenic potentials. The values of representativity and latency parameters PI, N1, PINI and amplitude parameters PI, NI, PINI were obtained. It was shown that latency PI in the patients with demyelinizing disease of CNS is higher than in those with PVS.

ABSTRACT

This paper is focused on the patterns of evoked vestibular myogenic potentials associated with the involvement of different segments of the the sacculo-neck reflex arc. Specifically, lesions of the vestibular analyzer at the receptor level, changes in the transmission system and at the muscular level are considered. Various patterns of evoked vestibular myogenic potentials characteristic of the disturbance of a given segments of the sacculo-neck reflex arc are described.

ABSTRACT

The present study included 23 healthy men examined by the method of evoked vestibular myogenic potentials. The normal values of parameters of representativeness were determined, the median was 0.95, the 25th and 75th percentiles were 0.88 and 0.97 respectively. The values of P1 peak latency varied from 10 to 13.4 ms, NI peak from 14.67 to 25 ms, the PINI segment from 4.33 to 13.67 ms. The amplitude of peaks P1, N1, P1N1 changed from 3.76 to 190 mcV. The variability of responses did not exceed 14% in terms of latency and 21% in terms of amplitude.

ABSTRACT

The state of the vestibular system was evaluated in 30 postpartum women following gestosis and 25 controls after uncomplicated pregnancy. Examination using the electronystagmographic technique failed to reveal spontaneous nystagmus (Ny) in the latter group whereas 13.3% and 30% women of the former group had it with the eyes open and closed respectively. Provocative functional tests significantly improved detectability of Ny. Hyperventilation was associated with Ny in 80% and 12% of the women after complicated and uneventful pregnancy respectively while orthostatic test revealed Ny in 63% and 12% of them. Active head rotation with closed eyes produced well-apparent experimental Ny in women of both groups, but it was significantly more pronounced in the former one. Post-gestosis women displayed markedly impaired reaction in vestibular-ocular reflex suppression test. It is concluded that 80% of the women with complicated pregnancy exhibited vestibular dysfunction of central origin in the postpartum period.
