ABSTRACT

Noncardiac chest pain (NCCP) may lead many problems on the health-care system. Having type D personality has been shown to adversely affect NCCP patients. This study aimed to determine the psychological comorbidities that type D personality is associated with, in patients with NCCP. The participants of this cross-sectional study were 360 patients diagnosed with NCCP. Patients filled out questionnaires about sociodemographic, behavioral, and clinical factors (severity of pain, somatization, cardiac anxiety, fear of body sensations, depression, and type D personality). Type D personality was more prevalent among female (p < 0.005), and those people having this personality showed lower sleep quality (p = 0.001) and sexual life satisfaction (p < 0.001) and more likely to be smoker (p < 0.001). Type D personality is strongly associated with fear of body sensations (ß = 5.92, SE = 1.95, p = 0.003), pain intensity (ß = 3.53, SE = 0.98, p < 0.001), depression (ß = 2.91, SE = 0.62, p < 0.001), and somatization (ß = 1.75, SE = 0.55, p < 0.001). Type D personality and major psychological comorbidities were strongly associated. Physicians should consider that having type D personality can be linked to NCCP in an effort to help patients receive effective psychological consultations.

ABSTRACT

The discharge of organic dye into environment is the threat to hydrosphere and biosphere. On the other hands, the agriculture solid wastes such walnut and almond shells pose serious pollutions in lithosphere and atmosphere when burned. The aim of present investigation is to fabricate microporous activated carbon from agriculture waste shells by microwave irradiation as efficient adsorbent to overcome these problems. Firstly, zinc chloride was impregnated into milled shell particles, 300 µm, by conventional and microwave-assisted techniques and then the dry precursors were heated in the closed and open ceramic vessels in air and nitrogen atmospheres. The experimental investigation was carried out to understand the roles of different fabrication factors such as shell particle size, catalyst impregnation ratio, microwave power, carbonization temperature, and atmosphere on cationic dye removal from wastewater. The mentioned factors efficiently affect the dye removal onto obtained activated carbon. The increase in the microwave power up to 600 W could effectively increase the dye removal. However, the higher powers inversely affect the removal efficiency. The equilibrium data were well fitted by Langmuir equation with high linear regression coefficients in which the maximum adsorption capacities of activated carbon produced by walnut and almond shells were determined to be 98 and 114 mg/g, respectively. The most prominent advantage of activated carbon produced from almond shell is lower content of catalyst employed in impregnation stage. Although the larger particles of solid waste were applied, the spongy nature with average pore diameter of 2.4 nm is the unique characteristic of activated carbon fabricated from almond shell which improves the performance of adsorbent in wastewater treatment.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Regarding to the complications of malnutrition in dialysis patients, using an easy and reliable method for evaluating of malnutrition is important in patients with the end-stage renal disease. Based on the effect of inflammatory factors in malnutrition, A new scale has been designed which is called malnutrition-inflammatory scale (MIS). We designed current study to assess the severity of malnutrition in peritoneal dialysis patients in Isfahan via MIS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional MIS was used for evaluation of malnutrition. MIS includes 10 components: dry weight changes, dietary intake, functional capacity, comorbidity, muscle wasting and loss of subcutaneous fat as well as body mass index (BMI), serum albumin level and total iron binding capacity (TIBC). Each component has four levels of severity from 0 (normal) to 3 (severely abnormal). All analyses were performed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 20 (SPSS 20) and P < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Results showed no significant difference in MIS between male and female participants. Mean of minimum inhibitory concentration in this study was calculated about 4.1 (MIS <9) which means no or mild malnutrition. Significant correlation between MIS and weight (P < 0.001), BMI (P < 0.001), TIBC (P < 0.001), triglyseride (P = 0.04) and arm circumference (P < 0.001) was seen. CONCLUSION: We suggest That MIS is being used as a valuable tool for prevention of fatal outcomes in chronic dialysis patients.
