ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of a dacitic tuff breccia (DTB) on Eimeria-infected broilers. A total of 600 one-day-old Cobb 500 male chickens were randomly assigned to 5 treatments with 10 replicates of 12 birds. Treatments were: an unchallenged control (UC), a challenged (CC) control (0% DTB), and 3 challenged groups with 0.125, 0.25, or 0.5% DTB. At d 14, birds in the CC and DTB groups were orally gavaged with mixed Eimeria spp., while the UC received water. Growth performance was evaluated during prechallenge, challenge, and postchallenge periods (0-14 d; 14-20 d; and 20-26 d, respectively). Gastrointestinal permeability was measured at 5 days postinfection (dpi). Intestinal histology and nutrient digestibility of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and ileal digestible energy (IDE) were measured at 6 dpi. Liver activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) was determined at 6 dpi, and concentrations of reduced (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were analyzed at 6 and 12 dpi. Data were analyzed using a linear mixed model analysis and Tukey's test (P ≤ 0.05). From 0 to 14 d, similar average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI, P > 0.05) were observed. Gain:feed ratio (GF) was higher in 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5% of DTB than the CC and UC (P < 0.001). From 14 to 20 d, the UC had the highest ADG, ADFI, and GF (P < 0.001). At 5 dpi, intestinal permeability was higher in the challenged groups than the UC. Additionally, the UC showed the highest apparent ileal digestibility of CP, whereas 0.125% DTB had higher CP digestibility than the CC and 0.5% DTB (P < 0.001). At 6 dpi, 0.125% DTB increased GSH-Px activity compared to the CC, 0.5% DTB, and UC (P < 0.001). At 12 dpi, 0.125% DTB showed increased GSH concentration compared to the CC, 0.25% DTB, and 0.5% DTB (P < 0.01). The mild coccidia infection negatively impacted growth performance, apparent ileal nutrient digestibility, intestinal histology, and gastrointestinal integrity in broilers. The use of 0.125% DTB exhibited potential in improving antioxidant responses, apparent ileal digestibility of CP, and growth performance.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of coccidiosis on bone quality and antioxidant status in the liver and bone marrow of broiler chickens. A total of 360 13-day old male broilers (Cobb 500) were randomly assigned to different groups (negative control, low, medium-low, medium-high, and highest dose groups) and orally gavaged with different concentrations of Eimeria oocysts solution. Broiler tibia and tibia bone marrow were collected at 6 days post-infection (6 dpi) for bone 3-D structural analyses and the gene expression related to osteogenesis, oxidative stress, and adipogenesis using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and real-time qPCR analysis, respectively. Metaphyseal bone mineral density and content were reduced in response to the increase of Eimeria challenge dose, and poor trabecular bone traits were observed in the high inoculation group. However, there were no significant structural changes in metaphyseal cortical bone. Medium-high Eimeria challenge dose significantly increased level of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG, p < 0.05) and decreased levels of bone gamma-carboxyglutamate protein coding gene (BGLAP, p < 0.05) and fatty acid synthase coding gene (FASN, p < 0.05) in bone marrow. An increased mRNA level of superoxide dismutase type 1 (SOD1, p < 0.05) and heme oxygenase 1 (HMOX1, p < 0.05), and increased enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, p < 0.05) were found in bone marrow of Eimeria challenged groups compared with that of non-infected control. Similarly, enzyme activity of SOD and the mRNA level of SOD1, HMOX1 and aflatoxin aldehyde reductase (AKE7A2) were increased in the liver of infected broilers (p < 0.05), whereas glutathione (GSH) content was lower in the medium-high challenge group (p < 0.05) compared with non-challenged control. Moreover, the mRNA expression of catalase (CAT) and nuclear factor kappa B1 (NFKB1) showed dose-depend response in the liver, where expression of CAT and NFKB1 was upregulated in the low challenge group but decreased with the higher Eimeria challenge dosage (p < 0.05). In conclusion, high challenge dose of Eimeria infection negatively affected the long bone development. The structural changes of tibia and decreased mineral content were mainly located at the trabecular bone of metaphyseal area. The change of redox and impaired antioxidant status following the Eimeria infection were observed in the liver and bone marrow of broilers.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and tuberculosis (TB) are two respiratory infectious diseases with a high incidence of transmission, mainly via respiratory droplets and both can weaken the immune system and lower the number of CD4+T cells in patients. COVID-19 can occur before, at the same time or after the diagnosis of TB. Patients with pulmonary TB are more likely to have co-infection when they have a history of epidemiological exposure to COVID-19. At present, many cases of nosocomial infection of COVID-19 caused by ineffective prevention and control measures in tuberculosis hospitals have been reported successively at domestic and overseas. Therefore, it is urgent to strengthen the prevention and control of nosocomial infections in tuberculosis hospitals. The superposition of the two diseases can lead to a worsening prognosis, aggravating the patient's condition and making treatment more difficult. In addition, in the context of the new coronavirus epidemic, early recognition of co-infection with new coronavirus should be made when TB patients in chest hospitals present with symptoms such as aggregated fever or progressive disease. At the same time, we should focus on identifying the clinical and imaging manifestations of TB and COVID-19 co-infection. At present, research on COVID-19 complicated with pulmonary TB is scarce, and there are disputes on many aspects. As a country with a high prevalence of tuberculosis, it is of great practical significance to identify the clinical characteristics, outcomes, and treatment of the two infectious diseases in China.

ABSTRACT

Poultry is the major sources of foodborne salmonellosis. Antibiotic resistance and a surge in zoonotic diseases warrant the use of natural alternatives. Glucosinolates (GLs) are naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds in rapeseed and canola. This study investigated the effect of feeding rapeseed, canola meal, and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC; Brassica secondary metabolites) on growth performance (GP), gut health, and the potential antimicrobial activity against nalidixic acid-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium (STNR) in chickens. A total of 640 one-day-old male Cobb 500 broilers were randomly allocated to 8 treatments with 8 replicated cages and 10 birds per cage. Dietary treatments were nonchallenge control (NC, corn-SBM based), challenge (Salmonella) control (CC), 10% rapeseed (10RS), 30% rapeseed (30RS), 20% canola meal (20CLM), 40% canola meal (40CLM), 500 ppm AITC (500AITC), and 1,500 ppm AITC (1500AITC). On d 1, all the birds except NC were orally challenged with STNR (7 log CFU/bird). The chickens were reared for 21 d, and their FI and BW were recorded weekly. Salmonella cecal colonization and fecal shedding were quantified, whereas organ translocation (OT) of STNR to the spleen, liver, and kidney was tested on 0, 3, 6, 13, and 20-d postchallenge (dpc). Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA, and the means were separated by Duncan's test, except mortality and OT data analyzed after transformation by square root of (n +1) (P < 0.05). Overall, feeding 30RS resulted in reduced BW (P = 0.003), BWG (P = 0.003), and FI (P = 0.001) compared to CC, 500AITC, and 1500AITC. Similarly, feeding 20CLM resulted in lower BW and BWG compared to CC (P < 0.05) and increased FCR compared to 1500AITC (P = 0.03). Feeding CC resulted in higher mortality compared to NC and 30RS (P = 0.03). Cecal colonization of STNR was reduced (P < 0.0001) for 30RS on 6 dpc and 500AITC on 6 and 13 dpc (P < 0.0001). Although no difference in gut permeability was observed 6 dpc (P > 0.05), OT of STNR population was the highest for CC in the spleen (P = 0.05). In the liver, 10RS showed reduced OT compared to 20CLM on 13 dpc (P = 0.03), whereas 30RS showed the lowest OT on 6 dpc in the kidney. Fecal shedding was lowest for 30RS on 6 dpc (P = 0.004). Histomorphology showed 30RS had the highest duodenum (P = 0.01) and jejunum (P = 0.02) villus height (VH) and VH to crypt depth (CD) ratio compared to the other treatments, whereas 1500AITC showed similar results to 30RS. Both 30RS and 1500AITC contained comparatively higher functional GL metabolites and were able to maintain gut health. Including higher levels of rapeseed or AITC in poultry feed can reduce Salmonella colonization in the feces and their translocation to other organs.

ABSTRACT

This study was performed to investigate the effect of feeding Brassica spp. including full-fat rapeseed, canola meal, and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) to broiler chicken challenged with E. maxima. A total of 576 one-day old male broiler chicks were completely randomized to 8 treatments with 6 replicated cages and 12 birds per cage. The treatment diets consisted of nonchallenge control (NC, corn-SBM based diet), challenge control (CC), 10% rapeseed (10RS), 30% rapeseed (30RS), 20% canola (20CLM), 40% canola (40CLM), 500 ppm AITC (500AITC), and 1,000 ppm AITC (1000AITC). At d 14, all birds were challenged, except NC group, with a subclinical dose of E. maxima. Intestinal permeability was conducted on 5 d post-infection (dpi) and for oocyst shedding 5 to 6 dpi feces were pooled and collected. On 6 dpi, growth performance, lesion score, histomorphology, and gene expression were measured. The growth performance result showed that 10RS and 30RS groups had lower BW, BWG, FI, and higher FCR (P < 0.0001). During the challenge and overall periods, NC group had highest BW, BWG, and FI, and lowest FCR. The inclusion of canola meal showed lower performance during prechallenge period but was able to catch up BWG during challenge period. The AITC levels showed similar growth performance to CC group. Intestinal permeability for 20CLM, 40CLM, 500AITC and 1000AITC was similar to NC group, whereas CC, 10RS, and 30RS had higher permeability compared to NC (P < 0.0001). Oocyst shedding was significantly lower for 40CLM and NC, whereas all other treatments had higher oocyst shedding (P < 0.0001). All the challenged treatment groups had higher lesion score and microscore than NC (P < 0.0001). Histomorphology data showed that jejunum villus height (VH) for 1000AITC was similar to NC group, whereas CC group had the lowest VH (P = 0.01). The 30RS group had lower VH: crypt depth (CD) ratio in the jejunum and ileum. The gene expression at 6 dpi for claudin1, occludin, IL2, IL6, GLUT5, EAAT, BoAT, and LAT1 was significantly changed among the treatments. The results suggest that 30RS retards growth performance and deteriorate gut health during coccidiosis and should not be fed to chicken during the starter phase. Canola meal showed decline in growth prechallenge but maintained growth and intestinal health during the challenge period at 40% inclusion. AITC at 1,000 ppm showed similar growth as control group, but with improved gut health during the challenge period. Canola meal could be a good alternative to SBM especially during coccidiosis, whereas AITC needs to be tested vigorously in animal feeding regime.

ABSTRACT

Increased knee flexion angles are associated with reduced non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risks. Ankle plantar flexion angles and internal risk factors could influence knee flexion angles, but their correlations are unknown. This study aimed to establish and validate a regression model to predict knee flexion angles using ankle plantar flexion angles, body mass index (BMI) and generalised joint laxity (GJL) at initial contact of single-leg drop landings. Thirty-two participants performed single-leg drop landings from a 30-cm-high platform. Kinematics and vertical ground reaction forces were measured using a motion capture system and force plate. A multiple regression was performed, and it was validated using a separate data set. The prediction model explained 38% (adjusted R2) of the change in knee flexion angles at initial contact (p = 0.001, large effect size). However, only the ankle plantar flexion angle (p < 0.001) was found to be a significant predictor of knee flexion angles. External validation further showed that the model explained 26% of knee flexion angles (large effect size). The inverse relationship between ankle plantar flexion and knee flexion angles suggests that foot landing strategies could be used to increase knee flexion angles, thereby reducing non-contact ACL injury risks.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics, treatment strategies and prognosis of rolandic and perirolandic drug-resistant epilepsies (DREs). Methods: The clinical data of 53 patients diagnosed with rolandic or perirolandic DRE who were admitted to Epilepsy Center, Sanbo Brain Hospital of Capital Medical University from January 2008 to January 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into resective therapy group and non-resective therapy group [bipolar electrocoagulation on cortex, stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG)-guided radiofrequency thermocoagulation, and vagus nerve stimulation]. The outcomes of epilepsy and post-surgical limb function were compared and analyzed. Results: A total of 53 patients were included, aged from 3 to 45 years old [(19±11) years], with 33 males and 20 females. Thirty patients received resective therapy and 23 patients received non-resective therapy. The curative effect of the resective therapy group was significantly better than that of the non-resective therapy group. The rate of Engel Ⅰ in resective therapy group was higher than that of non-resective group [83.3% (25/30) vs 39.1% (9/23), P=0.011). Compared with the non-resective group, the incidence of muscle strength decline in the resective group was higher both at 1 week [73.3% (22/30) vs 21.7% (5/23), P=0.006] and 3 months [30% (9/30) vs 0, P=0.016] after surgery. Conclusions: During the diagnosis and treatment, the multimodal method is conducive to the qualitative and localized diagnosis of the rolandic or perirolandic epilepsy, while SEEG has important value in the diagnosis, functional localization and treatment of the disease. Resective therapy is still the most effective method to terminate epilepsy, but it has a higher risk of post-surgical dysfunction.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To explore the effects of scenario simulation teaching of junior nurses in a burns department on the fluid resuscitation care of massive burn patients during shock stage. Methods: From March 2018 to July 2019, 25 junior nurses fixed in the Department of Burn of Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine met the inclusion criteria and were recruited in this prospective before-after self-control study, including 21 females and 4 males, aged 23 to 26 years. They had a work experience of 1.0 (1.0, 2.0) years in the Department of Burn. Three teaching scenarios were made according to the three major problems in the fluid resuscitation nursing of extensive burn patients during shock stage. The teaching plans were written based on the theoretical framework of Jeffrie's nursing simulation teaching. The high feasibility and practicability of the teaching plans was verified through expert consultation and evaluation by junior nurses. According to the three scenarios in the teaching plan, the junior nurses were performed with scenario simulation teaching, with 2 hours for each scenario, 6 hours in total. In one month before and after the teaching (hereinafter referred to as before and after teaching), the comprehensive ability of junior nurses was evaluated by the teachers using the self-designed junior nurse comprehensive ability evaluation scale, and their behaviors were evaluated by themselves with Performance Self-rating Scale for Nursing Students on High Simulation Training. Data were statistically analyzed with paired sample t test. Results: After teaching, the scores on communication skills, patient admissions, condition assessments, fluid resuscitation, emergency treatment, drug management, nursing skills, instrument use, teamwork, and humanitarian care and total score in the comprehensive ability evaluation of junior nurses as evaluated by teachers were significantly higher than those before teaching (t=-8.060, -11.421, -17.232, -24.800, -4.670, -11.916, -12.131, -11.606, -14.632, -13.325, -25.068, P<0.01), with 4 items including fluid resuscitation, condition assessment, nursing skills, and equipment operation having higher scores. After teaching, the nurses' self-rating scores on communication, division of labor and cooperation, clinical decision-making, professional knowledge and skills, and professional development and critical thinking and total score were (4.6±0.4), (4.8±0.3), (4.6±0.3), (4.6±0.4), (4.6±0.4), and (23.2±1.5) points respectively, which were significantly higher than the corresponding scores of (4.1±0.7), (4.2±0.7), (3.9±0.5), (3.7±0.6), (3.9±0.5), and (18.8±2.6) points before teaching (t=-3.361, -5.721, -6.987, -7.923, -7.922, -7.367, P<0.01). Conclusions: With solving the practical problems in nursing works of fluid resuscitation care of massive burn patients during shock stage as entry point, scenario simulation teaching aims to train the clinical practice ability and adaptability of junior nurses, thereby improving junior nurses' comprehensive ability of clinical practice in the fluid resuscitation care of massive burn patients during shock stage, enhancing their self-confidence and critical thinking ability.

The aim of this study was to compare ultrasound strain elastography (USE) with conventional ultrasonography echogenicity (EL) in detecting muscle pathology. For conventional ultrasonography, biceps EL was obtained. For USE, elasticity index (EI) of biceps was represented as a range, from 0 (softest) to 6 (hardest). Muscle-to-fats elasticity ratio compared EI of muscle with that of surrounding fats. Color distribution of elastogram was analyzed using open-source ImageJ software showing % red, % green, and % blue within a region of interest. Increased biceps EL, decreased biceps EI, and elasticity ratio were observed in patients with myopathy. In the color elastogram, there is no significant difference in % green between healthy control and patient, but significance was observed in % red and % blue (P < 0.001). Utilization of USE parameters has increased sensitivity up to 100% compared with 63% with conventional US. It is a promising adjunct for the clinical diagnosis of myopathy.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the clinicopathological characteristics and immunophenotype of female genital system diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in order to improve diagnosis and therapy efficacy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinicopathologic features of 13 cases with primary DLBCL of the female genital system were studied retrospectively. According to the immunophenotypes, 10 cases were classified as germinal center B-cell-like DLBCL and the other 3 as non-center B-cell-like DLBCL. RESULTS: The immunohistochemistry data showed that CD20, PAX-5, and CD79a tested positive, while CD3, CD43 and CD45RO tested negative in all 13 cases. In 7 cases EMA was positive, in 9 cases CD10 was positive, in 11 cases bcl-6 was positive, and in 9 cases MUM-1 was tested positive. In one case, the Ki-67 index was less than 59%, in 3 cases Ki-67 index was between 60% to 89% and it was more than 90% in the remaining 9 cases (the median was 90%). All 13 patients underwent hysterectomy, while in 10 of them hysterectomy was followed by chemotherapy. The survival time was 3 to 20 months. CONCLUSIONS: Primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the primary female genital system is a rare and highly invasive condition that can be easily misdiagnosed. A complete diagnosis is very important because the treatment and prognosis vary in different histological types. Moreover, the immunohistochemistry is an useful diagnostic method for this type of cancer.

BACKGROUND: Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries commonly occur when athletes land in high risk positions such as knee valgus. The position of the foot at landing may influence the transmission of forces from the ankle to the knee. Using an experimental approach to manipulate foot rotation positions, this study aimed to provide new insights on how knee valgus during single-leg landing may be influenced by foot positions. METHODS: Eleven male recreational basketball players performed single-leg drop landings from a 30-cm high platform in three foot rotation positions (toe-in, toe-forward and toe-out) at initial contact. A motion capture system and a force plate were used to measure lower extremity kinematics and kinetics. Knee valgus angles at initial contact (KVA) and maximum knee valgus moments (KVM), which were known risk factors associated with ACL injury, were measured. A one-way repeated measures Analysis of Variance was conducted (α=0.05) to compare among the three foot positions. RESULTS: Foot rotation positions were found to have a significant effect on KVA (p<0.001, η2=0.66) but the difference between conditions (about 1°) was small and not clinically meaningful. There was a significant effect of foot position on KVM (p<0.001, η2=0.55), with increased moment observed in the toe-out position as compared to toe-forward (p=0.012) or toe-in positions (p=0.002). CONCLUSIONS: When landing with one leg, athletes should avoid extreme toe-out foot rotation positions to minimise undesirable knee valgus loading associated with non-contact ACL injury risks.

BACKGROUND: The majority of patients diagnosed with advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) relapse with resistant disease, and there are no biomarkers that possess clinical utility to identify or monitor these patients. This study aimed to identify secreted proteins ('secretome') collected from human EOC cell lines that differ in their inherent platinum sensitivity. METHODS: Secreted proteins collected from conditioned medium from ovarian cancer cell lines that vary in their sensitivity to cisplatin were digested with trypsin and analysed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for peptide identification. RESULTS: Of the 1688 proteins identified, 16 possessed significant differential abundances (P<0.05) between the platinum-resistant and -sensitive cell lines. A number of these were verified by immunoblot, including COL11A1, which was also found to be associated with worse progression-free survival (PFS; N=723) and overall survival (OS; N=1183) as assessed from publicly available transcript expression data from ovarian cancer tumour specimens. CONCLUSION: Secretome proteomics of EOC cells resulted in the identification of a novel candidate biomarker, COL11A1. The expression level of COL11A1 correlates to worse PFS and OS, and is predicted to reside in peripheral circulation making this an attractive candidate for validation in sera as a biomarker of cisplatin resistance and poor outcome.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, total internal reflection-refraction (TIR-R) concentration (U-TIR-R-C) lens module were designed for uniformity using the energy configuration method to eliminate hot spots on the surface of solar cell and increase conversion efficiency. The design of most current solar concentrators emphasizes the high-power concentration of solar energy, however neglects the conversion inefficiency resulting from hot spots generated by uneven distributions of solar energy concentrated on solar cells. The energy configuration method proposed in this study employs the concept of ray tracing to uniformly distribute solar energy to solar cells through a U-TIR-R-C lens module. The U-TIR-R-C lens module adopted in this study possessed a 76-mm diameter, a 41-mm thickness, concentration ratio of 1134 Suns, 82.6% optical efficiency, and 94.7% uniformity. The experiments demonstrated that the U-TIR-R-C lens module reduced the core temperature of the solar cell from 108 °C to 69 °C and the overall temperature difference from 45 °C to 10 °C, and effectively relative increased the conversion efficiency by approximately 3.8%. Therefore, the U-TIR-R-C lens module designed can effectively concentrate a large area of sunlight onto a small solar cell, and the concentrated solar energy can be evenly distributed in the solar cell to achieve uniform irradiance and effectively eliminate hot spots.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The largest contribution to the population dose from man-made ionizing radiation sources is the medical exposure. Exposure to patients from medical examinations is of interest because it is a global indicator for the quality of radiology practice. Due to the different healthcare systems and the considerable variations in the equipment and manpower in radiology, the population dose from medical exposure varies by a large extent in different countries. This dose from different diagnostic procedures provides information that can be used to establish national reference levels. It is also useful to determine the priority in terms of dose reduction so as to optimize the protection of patients in a cost-effective manner. In the present work, the collective effective doses due to different medical modalities were estimated for the Taiwan population in 2008. METHODS: The collective effective dose from medical exposure was calculated using information on the number of procedures and the average effective dose per procedure. The frequency of procedures was extracted from the National Health Insurance (NHI) research database. The enrollment of Taiwan population in the NHI program was 99.48% in 2008. The average effective dose per procedure was derived from hospital surveys, measured data, and published results. RESULTS: Estimates of the collective effective dose were made for different medical modalities, i.e., the conventional radiography and fluoroscopy, computed tomography, interventional fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, and dental radiography. Each modality was further divided into relevant classes by the body part or organ system. Among 23 037 031 Taiwan population in 2008, the annual examination frequencies per 1000 population were 550, 55.1, 15.6, 13.6, and 112 for the conventional radiography and fluoroscopy, computed tomography, interventional fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, and dental radiography, respectively. The corresponding collective effective doses were 3277, 8608, 2743, 2303, and 28 man-Sv, respectively. Thus, the average effective dose per caput was 0.74 mSv, which was in the range of 0.3-1.5 mSv for the 12 European countries estimated for 2008. CONCLUSIONS: In the period from 1997 to 2008, the procedure frequency per 1000 population increased by a factor of 2.3 for computed tomography, 2.2 for interventional fluoroscopy, 1.8 for conventional radiography and fluoroscopy, and 1.5 for nuclear medicine. It demonstrated that the medical utilization of imaging facilities raised rapidly.

ABSTRACT

We report the first genome-wide association study in 1000 bipolar I patients and 1000 controls, with a replication of the top hits in another 409 cases and 1000 controls in the Han Chinese population. Four regions with most strongly associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were detected, of which three were not found in previous GWA studies in the Caucasian populations. Among them, SNPs close to specificity protein 8 (SP8) and ST8 α-N-acetyl- neuraminide α-2,8-sialyltransferase (ST8SIA2) are associated with Bipolar I, with P-values of 4.87 × 10(-7) (rs2709736) and 6.05 × 10(-6) (rs8040009), respectively. We have also identified SNPs in potassium channel tetramerization domain containing 12 gene (KCTD12) (rs2073831, P=9.74 × 10(-6)) and in CACNB2 (Calcium channel, voltage-dependent, ß-2 subunit) gene (rs11013860, P=5.15 × 10(-5)), One SNP nearby the rs1938526 SNP of ANK3 gene and another SNP nearby the SNP rs11720452 in chromosome 3 reported in previous GWA studies also showed suggestive association in this study (P=6.55 × 10(-5) and P=1.48 × 10(-5), respectively). This may suggest that there are common and population-specific susceptibility genes for bipolar I disorder.

ABSTRACT

Muscle samples of 121 and 110 bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) caught by Taiwanese long-line fishing vessels in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, respectively, were used to analyze total mercury (THg) and organic mercury (OHg) content. The overall THg and OHg concentrations were 0.786 ± 0.386 (0.214-3.133) and 0.595 ± 0.238 (0.143-2.222) mg kg⁻¹ wet weight, respectively, similar to the results of previous studies. Our findings, however, reflected the highest THg and OHg concentrations for the species in each ocean among the published data. Mean THg and OHg concentrations in Atlantic tuna were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those in Indian tuna. Two of 121 samples of tuna from the Atlantic Ocean, but no samples from the Indian Ocean, had levels of OHg above 2 mg kg⁻¹ wet weight set by the Department of Health Taiwan, and 13 of 121 samples of tuna from the Atlantic Ocean and three of 110 samples from the Indian Ocean had levels of OHg above 1 mg kg⁻¹ wet weight set by US FDA and WHO. Accordingly, for adult Taiwanese men and women with average body weight of 65 and 55 kg, respectively, the maximum allowable weekly intake of bigeye tuna is suggested to be 170 and 145 g, respectively.

ABSTRACT

A sensitive search for the lepton-number-violating decay Xi(-)-->pmu(-)mu(-) has been performed using a sample of approximately 10(9) Xi(-) hyperons produced in 800 GeV/c p-Cu collisions. We obtain B(Xi(-)-->pmu(-)mu(-))<4.0x10(-8) at 90% confidence, improving on the best previous limit by 4 orders of magnitude.

ABSTRACT

A sensitive search for the rare decays Omega(-)--> Lambdapi(-) and Xi(0)--> ppi(-) has been performed using data from the 1997 run of the HyperCP (Fermilab E871) experiment. Limits on other such processes do not exclude the possibility of observable rates for |DeltaS| = 2 nonleptonic hyperon decays, provided the decays occur through parity-odd operators. We obtain the branching-fraction limits B(Omega(-)-->Lambdapi(-)) < 2.9 x 10(-6) and B(Xi(0)--> ppi(-)) < 8.2 x 10(-6), both at 90% confidence level.

ABSTRACT

We have compared the p and p angular distributions in 117 x 10(6) Xi- -->Lambdapi- -->ppi-pi- and 41 x 10(6) Xi+ -->Lambda pi+ -->p pi+pi+ decays using a subset of the data from the HyperCP experiment (E871) at Fermilab. We find no evidence of CP violation, with the direct-CP-violating parameter AXiLambda identical with (alphaXialphaLambda-alpha Xialpha Lambda)/(alphaXialphaLambda+alphaXialphaLambda)=[0.0+/-5.1(stat)+/-4.4(syst)] x 10(-4).
