ABSTRACT

Using the "Don't look" (DL) paradigm, wherein participants are asked not to look at a specific feature (i.e., eye, nose, and mouth), we previously documented that Easterners struggled to completely avoid fixating on the eyes and nose. Their underlying mechanisms for attractiveness may differ because the fixations on the eyes were triggered only reflexively, whereas fixations on the nose were consistently elicited. In this study, we predominantly focused on the nose, where the center-of-gravity (CoG) effect, which refers to a person's tendency to look near an object's CoG, could be confounded. Full-frontal and mid-profile faces were used because the latter's CoG did not correspond to the nose location. Although we hypothesized that these two effects are independent, the results indicated that, in addition to the successful tracing of previous studies, the CoG effect explains the nose-attracting effect. This study not only reveals this explanation but also raises a question regarding the CoG effect on Eastern participants.

ABSTRACT

Although motor imagery and working memory (WM) appear to be closely linked, no previous studies have demonstrated direct evidence for the relationship between motor imagery and WM abilities. This study investigated the association between WM and gait motor imagery and focused on the individual differences in young adults. This study included 33 participants (mean age: 22.2 ± 0.9 years). We used two methods to measure the ability of different WM domains: verbal and visuo-spatial WM. Gait motor imagery accuracy was assessed via the mental chronometry paradigm. We measured the times participants took to complete an actual and imagined walk along a 5 m walkway, with three different path widths. The linear mixed effects model analysis revealed that visuo-spatial WM ability was a significant predictor of the accuracy of gait motor imagery, but not of verbal WM ability. Specifically, individuals with lower visuo-spatial WM ability demonstrated more inaccuracies in the difficult path-width conditions. However, gait motor imagery was not as accurate as actual walking even in the easiest path width or in participants with high visuo-spatial WM ability. Further, visuo-spatial WM ability was significantly correlated with mental walking but not with actual walking. These results suggest that visuo-spatial WM is related to motor imagery rather than actual movement.

ABSTRACT

The space immediately around the body, referred to as the peripersonal space (PPS), plays a crucial role in interactions with external objects and in avoiding unsafe situations. This study aimed to investigate whether the size of the PPS changes depending on direction, with a particular focus on the disparity between the front and rear spaces. A vibrotactile stimulus was presented to measure PPS while a task-irrelevant auditory stimulus (probe) approached the participant. In addition, to evaluate the effect of the probe, a baseline condition was used in which only tactile stimuli were presented. The results showed that the auditory facilitation effect of the tactile stimulus was greater in the rear condition than in the front condition. Conversely, the performance on tasks related to auditory distance perception and sound speed estimation did not differ between the two directions, indicating that the difference in the auditory facilitation effect between directions cannot be explained by these factors. These findings indicate that the strength of audio-tactile integration is greater in the rear space compared to the front space, suggesting that the representation of the PPS differed between the front and rear spaces.

ABSTRACT

If voluntary action is followed by an effect with a short time delay, the time interval between action and effect is often perceived to be shorter than it actually is. This perceptual time compression is termed intentional binding or temporal binding. We investigated age-related changes in adulthood considering temporal binding and its dependence on action body parts (i.e., hand vs. foot). This experiment included 17 young adults (mean age: 21.71 ± 3.14 years) and 27 older adults (mean age: 74.41 ± 3.38 years). Participants performed a button press task using their index fingers (hand condition) or toes (foot condition). The results showed that older participants exhibited a strong time compression comparable to young participants in the voluntary condition. Older participants also showed a strong time compression in involuntary action, which was induced by a mechanical device, differently from young participants. In line with previous research, the present age-related differences in time compression considering involuntary action suggest that causal belief significantly influences event perception rather than the associated intention of action or sensory afferents. The present results also suggest that the nature of action body parts has no significant influence on temporal binding, independent of age group.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing a face mask became a global daily practice. Japanese people were already accustomed to wearing masks due to their collectivistic culture, which prioritizes conformity and group harmony. In such a culture, where individuals are concerned about how others perceive them and their actions, wearing masks can be a self-protective action to prevent, escape, or reduce the severity of perceived negative feelings. Previous studies indicate that people experiencing anxiety tend to have negative biases when evaluating emotional expressions on faces. Therefore, we hypothesized that wearing a mask can reduce the negative feelings caused by social pressure, emotion processing, especially intensity perception. While our findings confirmed that wearing a mask reduced negative feelings caused by social pressure, there was no significant change in emotion intensity recognition performance. This null result might be attributed to the small effect size of the association between negative bias in emotion processing and an individual's state. In future studies, it would be valuable to include participants from non-collectivistic cultures to gain a broader understanding of the impact of wearing masks on emotion processing.

ABSTRACT

When a voluntary action is followed by an effect after a short delay, the time distance between the action and its effect is perceived to be shorter than the actual time distance. This phenomenon is known as intentional binding (IB). We investigated the influence of presentation of an additional effect on IB between the action and the target effect, and investigated the influence of the presentation timing of the additional effect. One sound (target sound) was constantly presented 250 ms after the button was pressed, and the other sound (additional sound) was presented simultaneously when the button was pressed (Experiment 1) or at one of various timings that included moments both before and after the target sound (Experiment 2). The results showed that IB between the action and target sound was significantly inhibited only when the additional sound was presented prior to the target sound. This suggests that the prior effect has a greater advantage in connecting to the action compared to the posterior sound.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have shown that space perception around the body is altered by self-motion, and that several self-motion cues from different modalities, including vision, proprioception, the vestibular system, and the motor system (motor commands) contribute to it. However, studies on how online self-motion information affects the perception of a passable width of a narrow aperture is largely overlooked by existing literature. Therefore, this study investigated this issue during virtual bike riding. Participants observed a narrow doorway aperture with varied widths in a virtual environment through a head-mounted display while riding a stationary bike. Visual self-motion information was presented by optical flow, while motor commands and proprioceptive feedback (non-visual information) was provided by having participants pedal the bike. The participants were then required to judge whether the presented aperture was passable. Experiment 1, where both visual and non-visual cues were provided, confirmed that the perceived passable width significantly increased with increasing self-motion speed, as previously shown during walking. Experiment 2, where self-motion cues were manipulated, showed that expansion of the perceived passable width was mainly induced by visual self-motion information. These results suggest that online self-motion information can affect passable width perception during bike riding and that visual self-motion information plays a significant role in this perception.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated age-related change in visuo-proprioceptive processing in the perceived body position using mirror hand/foot illusions, focusing on its temporal characteristics, its dependency on body parts, and its association with older adults' fall risk. Either immediately or 15 s after the exposure to the mirror-induced inconsistency of visuo-proprioceptive signals regarding the right hand or foot position, participants performed a reaching task using the unseen, illusion-affected hand or foot. Results showed clear age group differences. Specifically, older adults exhibited larger reaching errors than younger adults in the hand condition, and after the 15 s delay in the foot condition. Further, the reaching errors were constant across time for older adults but decreased after the delay in young adults, regardless of the tested body part. Particularly, older adults' risk of falling, which was assessed by the timed up-and-go test, was negatively correlated with the reduction of reaching error across time. This suggests that older adults, especially those with a high risk of falling, face difficulties in appropriately processing visual and proprioceptive information for body perception in accordance with their external environment.

ABSTRACT

Social presence is crucial for smooth communications in virtual reality (VR). Current telecommunication systems rarely submit spatial auditory information originating from remote people. However, such information may enhance social presence in VR. In this study, we constructed a dynamic binaural synthesis system and investigated the effect of spatial auditory information of a remote partner on a participant's behavior using the social Simon effect (SSE). The SSE is a spatial stimulus-response compatibility effect between two persons. The SSE occurs when one perceives that their partner is present. Several studies have confirmed the SSE in actual environments. We presented partner sounds diotically (i.e., without spatial information) to one group or binaurally (i.e., with spatial information) to another group through headphones without providing visual information about the partner. The results showed that the SSE was induced only in the binaural group in the current auditory VR (Experiment 1), whereas both groups exhibited the SSE in an actual environment (Experiment 2). These results suggest that the auditory spatial information of remote people is sufficient to induce the SSE and has a potential to enhance social presence.

ABSTRACT

Individual differences exist in gait motor imagery ability. However, little is known about the underlying neural mechanisms. We previously conducted a study using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), which showed that participants who overestimated mental walking times to a greater degree exhibited greater activation in the right prefrontal cortex (PFC). The PFC is implicated in executive functions (EFs), including working memory (WM). Thus, this study investigated whether individual differences in EF capacity are associated with gait motor imagery ability and PFC activity. Thirty volunteers participated (mean age: 21.7 ± 1.8 years) in the study. Their EF capacity was assessed by the Trail Making Test - Part B (TMT-B). We measured the accuracy of gait motor imagery and PFC activity during mental walking using fNIRS, while changing task difficulty by varying the path width. The results showed that the overestimation of mental walking time over actual walking time and right PFC activity increased with an increase in the TMT-B times. These results suggest that the EF capacity, including WM, is strongly associated with gait motor imagery ability and right PFC activity. The brain network that includes the right PFC may play an important role in the maintenance and manipulation of gait motor imagery.

ABSTRACT

The space immediately around the body, known as the peripersonal space (PPS), plays an important role in interactions with the environment. Specific representations are reported to be constructed in the brain. PPS expansion reportedly occurs during whole-body self-motions, such as walking; however, little is known regarding how dynamic cues in proprioceptive/motor information contribute to such phenomena. Thus, we investigated this issue using a pedaling bike situation. We defined PPS as the maximum distance at which a visual probe facilitated tactile detection at the chest. Experiment 1 compared two conditions where participants did or did not pedal the bike at a constant speed while observing an optic flow that simulated forward self-motion (pedaling and no pedaling). Experiment 2 investigated the effect of pedal resistances (high and low) while presenting the same optic flow as in Experiment 1. The results revealed that the reaction time (RT) difference (probe RT - baseline RT) was larger for the pedaling than for the no-pedaling condition. However, pedal resistance differences hardly affected the visuotactile interaction, although the participants clearly experienced differences in force. These results suggest that proprioceptive/motor cues can contribute to the modulation of PPS representation, but dynamic information included in these cues may have little influence.

ABSTRACT

Humans can extract a great deal of information about others very quickly. This is partly because the face automatically captures observers' attention. Specifically, the eyes can attract overt attention. Although it has been reported that not only the eyes but also the nose can capture initial oculomotor movement in Eastern observers, its generalizability remains unknown. In this study, we applied the "don't look" paradigm wherein participants are asked not to fixate on a specific facial region (i.e., eyes, nose, and mouth) during an emotion recognition task with upright (Experiment 1) and inverted (Experiment 2) faces. In both experiments, we found that participants were less able to inhibit the initial part of their fixations to the nose, which can be interpreted as the nose automatically capturing attention. Along with previous studies, our overt attention tends to be attracted by a part of the face, which is the nose region in Easterner observers.

ABSTRACT

Our bodily sensation is a fundamental cue for our self-consciousness. Whereas experimental studies have uncovered characteristics of bodily sensation, these studies investigated bodily sensations through manipulating bodily sensations to be apart from one's own body and to be assigned to external, body-like objects. In order to capture our bodily sensation as it is, this questionnaire survey study explored the characteristics of bodily sensation using a large population-based sample (N = 580, comprising 20s to 70s age groups) without experimental manipulations. We focused on the sensations of ownership, the feeling of having a body part as one's own, and agency, the feeling of controlling a body part by oneself, in multiple body parts (the eyes, ears, hands, legs, nose, and mouth). The ownership and agency sensations were positively related to each other in each body part. Interestingly, the agency sensation of the hands and legs had a positive relationship with the ownership sensations of the other body parts. We also found the 60s age group had a unique internal configuration, assessed by the similarity of rating scores, of the body parts for each bodily sensation. Our findings revealed the existence of unique characteristics for bodily sensations in a natural state.

Previous studies have shown that imagined walking ability decreases with age in a similar manner as actual walking ability; however, little is known about the neural mechanisms underlying this aging effect. The present study investigates this issue, focusing on the effect of task difficulty and the involvement of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Twenty healthy right-handed older adults (mean age 74.5 ± 3.3 years) participated in two experiments. In Experiment 1, the time participants took for actual and imagined walking along a 5-m walkway of three different path widths (15, 25, and 50 cm) were compared. In Experiment 2, the participants imagined walking along the aforementioned paths while PFC activity was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. At the behavioral level, older adults exhibited longer mental and actual walking times for narrower paths and tended to overestimate their imagined walking times over their actual ones. However, overall, the magnitude of the overestimation did not differ by task difficulty. Regarding brain activity, older adults who overestimated mental walking times to a greater degree in the narrowest path exhibited decreased activation in the bilateral PFC. Moreover, compared with young adults in our previous study (Kotegawa et al., 2020), older adults with higher gait ability exhibited the same or smaller mental/actual walking times as well as decreased bilateral PFC activation in the most difficult condition. These results suggest that older adults, especially those with higher gait ability, can utilize neural mechanisms that are different from those of young adults when generating gait motor imagery.

ABSTRACT

Peripersonal space (PPS), which refers to space immediately around an individual's body, plays an important role in interacting with external objects and avoiding unsafe situations. Studies suggest that, during self-motion perception, PPS expands in the direction in which a person perceives himself/herself to be traveling. In the present study, we built on this by investigating, using visually induced self-motion (vection), how visual self-motion information modulates PPS representation. In our experiment, large-field visual motion was presented through a head-mounted display that caused observers to perceive themselves as moving forward in a tunnel (LF condition). To clarify the effects of self-motion information, we compared the findings for this condition with those of another condition, in which small-field visual motion was presented; here, only the central visual field represented motion, which caused the observers to perceive relatively little self-motion (SF condition). Two speeds were tested for both conditions: 1.5 m/s and 6.0 m/s. For measurement, we used a visuotactile-interaction task in which participants, while observing a visual probe object approaching from various distances, were instructed to press a response key as soon as they detected tactile stimuli delivered to their chest. We measured the distance at which the visual approaching probe object facilitated tactile detection (visual-facilitation effect); this was determined through comparisons with trials when no probe was presented. The results showed that the visual facilitation effects were observed for larger distance in the LF than SF conditions, irrespective of tested speeds. These results suggest that visual self-motion information can modulate PPS representation. This finding fits well with the view that PPS representation contributes to protecting the body from potential threats in the environment.

ABSTRACT

It has been found that Western observers cannot inhibit their gaze to the eye region, even if they are told to avoid doing so when they observe face stimuli because of the importance of the eye region. However, studies indicate that the nose region is more important for face processing among Eastern observers. We used the "don't look" paradigm with Eastern observers, in which participants were told to avoid fixating on a specific region (eye, nose, and mouth). The results extend previous findings as both the eye and nose regions attracted their gaze. Interestingly, the fixation behaviors differed for the eyes and nose in terms of the time-dependent view, in which reflexive saccades to the eye with a persistent fixation to the nose were observed. The nose regions could have stronger attractiveness than previously thought.

Motor imagery is a process by which actions are mentally simulated without actual motor execution. While previous studies have indicated the involvement of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in gait motor imagery as well as in gait control, the evidence supporting this finding is inconsistent. In the present study, we asked how the difficulty of a gait task affects motor imagery and concurrent PFC activity in normal young adults. Fifteen healthy, right-handed participants (mean age 21.7 ± 4.4 years; handedness uniform by chance) participated in two experiments as follows: (1) participants alternately imagined and executed walking along a 5-m walkway of three different widths (15, 25, and 50 cm); the imagined and actual durations of walking were measured and compared; (2) participants imagined walking along the aforementioned paths of varying width while PFC activity was measured using multichannel, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). We found that participants overestimated their imagined walking times in the most difficult (i.e., narrowest), 15-cm condition. Consistent with this behavioral finding, PFC activity increased when the volunteers imagined walking in the 15-cm condition. Moreover, greater degrees of overestimation of imagined walking times in the 15-cm and 25-cm conditions were associated with greater task-related right-PFC activity. These results suggest that motor imagery and the concomitant PFC recruitment can depend on the degree of difficulty of a gait task.

This study investigated the effects of declined accommodation on reading performance in non-native and native languages. Eighteen native Japanese speakers participated: eight presbyopes and ten non-presbyopes. In the experiment, participants were asked to scan, or sequentially read six-word items presented in two-line texts, identify a non-word target as quickly as possible, and indicate its location. In addition to the participant type (presbyopes/non-presbyopes) and language of the reading material (Japanese/English), viewing distance (35 cm/70 cm) and contrast (18%/100%) were manipulated. The results showed that the presbyopes exhibited worse reading performance than the non-presbyopes at closer distances irrespective of the language. Notably, the inferiority of the presbyopes' reading performance was more pronounced when they read in a non-native language than in their native language. It should be noted that differences in reading performance between the presbyopes and non-presbyopes were subtle for high-contrast words at longer viewing distances, indicating that age- or cohort-related perceptual, motor, and cognitive differences were almost negligible, but accommodation mattered. These results suggest that the effect of accommodation decline is influenced by the language of the reading material.

ABSTRACT

Our visual system briefly retains a trace of a stimulus after it disappears. This phenomenon is known as iconic memory and its contents are thought to be temporally integrated with subsequent visual inputs to produce a single composite representation. However, there is little consensus on the temporal integration between iconic memory and subsequent visual inputs. Here, we show that iconic memory revises its contents depending upon the configuration of the newly produced single representation with particular temporal characteristics. The Poggendorff illusion, in which two collinear line segments are perceived as non-collinear by an intervening rectangle, was observed when the rectangle was presented during a period spanning from 50 ms before to 200 ms after the presentation of the line segments. The illusion was most prominent when the rectangle was presented approximately 100 to 150 ms after the line segments. Furthermore, the illusion was observed at the center of a moving object, but only when the line segments were presented before the rectangle. These results indicate that the contents of iconic memory are susceptible to the modulatory influence of subsequent visual inputs before being translated into conscious perception in a time-locked manner both in retinotopic and non-retinotopic, object-centered frames of reference.

Recent physiological studies have showed that some visuotactile brain areas respond to other's peripersonal spaces (PPS) as they would their own. This study investigates this PPS remapping phenomenon in terms of human behavior. Participants placed their left hands on a tabletop screen where visual stimuli were projected. A vibrotactile stimulator was attached to the tip of their index finger. While a white disk approached or receded from the hand in the participant's near or far space, the participant was instructed to quickly detect a target (vibrotactile stimulation, change in the moving disk's color or both). When performing this task alone, the participants exhibited shorter detection times when the disk approached the hand in their near space. In contrast, when performing the task with a partner across the table, the participants exhibited shorter detection times both when the disk approached their own hand in their near space and when it approached the partner's hand in the partner's near space but the participants' far space. This phenomenon was also observed when the body parts from which the visual stimuli approached/receded differed between the participant and partner. These results suggest that humans can share PPS representations and/or body-derived attention/arousal mechanisms with others.
