ABSTRACT

AIM: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the occurrence of potential pathogenic Vibrio parahaemolyticus in seafoods using DNA-based techniques in comparison with bacteriological methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: From 120 fresh and processed fish and mussel samples collected from Middle Black Sea, 32 isolates were identified as V. parahaemolyticus by bacteriological methods and confirmed by tl gene-based conventional PCR. Of them, 13 isolates were found positive for only tdh gene, six isolates for only trh gene and 13 isolates for both genes by multiplex PCR. CONCLUSIONS: It is the first report demonstrating the presence of potential pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus isolates from the Black Sea seafoods by PCR detection of tl, trh and tdh genes that was found more rapid than bacteriological methods. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study confirmed the previous reports that characterization of potential pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus isolates based on the PCR techniques was reliable and cost-effective. These results suggest that molecular detection methods should be included in Turkish Standards of seafood control in addition to bacteriological methods.

ABSTRACT

We have analyzed the distribution of aldolase A and C mRNAs and proteins in various areas of the human brain using Northern blot analyses and immunohistochemistry. Aldolase A mRNA expression was higher than aldolase C mRNA expression in all areas of the brain examined. Aldolase C mRNA expression was highest in the cerebellum. Aldolase C protein was present in well-delimited regions of the CNS, and was distributed in stripes in the Purkinje cell layer of the cerebellum, in the inferior olives and in the sensory neurons of the posterior horn of the spinal cord. The novel finding of aldolase C in well-delimited cell compartments of the human cerebellum and in several other areas of the CNS lends weight to the hypothesis that this protein exerts other functions (e.g. sensory transmission) besides those characteristic of a glycolytic enzyme.

ABSTRACT

Amyloid deposition in secondary amyloidosis frequently involves thyroid gland, but rarely is responsible of a goiter. Amyloid goiter in secondary amyloidosis is characterized by deposition of amyloid A protein (AA) in the gland, associated to atrophic follicles. We identified cases of amyloid goiter in the files of our department in the period from 1985 to 1998. Five cases of amyloid goiter with ingravescent symptomatology, characterized by dyspnea, dysphagia and hoarseness were selected. In four cases of five we observed predisposing conditions as, for example, tuberculosis, Crohn's disease, or rheumatoid arthritis. In all cases the symptoms relative to thyroid enlargement preceded or, anyway, predominated over other clinical evidence of systemic amyloidosis. In one case a symptomatology of systemic amyloidosis was not evident. We would like to underline that in all cases the immunoreactivity for amyloid A in the amorphous material present in the gland permitted the diagnosis of secondary amyloidosis even in the absence of systemic symptoms.

ABSTRACT

The authors report their experience on 37 cases of Early Gastric Cancer on 1978-1990 period. They underline the excellent results obtained with subtotal gastrectomy and lynphectomy without deaths neither returns. They stress the diagnostic precision of endoscopic exam now of first choice in the early diagnosis of Early Gastric Cancer.

ABSTRACT

The authors focus on some aspects of gallbladder primitive cancer and report their experience about 14 cases. They confirm the malignancy of the disease and the severe prognosis due to diagnostic delay. Only the mucosal localization may be radically treated even by simple cholecystectomy.

ABSTRACT

The authors report their experience for 158 cases of colon rectum cancer, surgically treated on surgical department of USL 1 Marche. Evaluated short term and long term results they conclude that the only possibility to improve presently the survival of this disease resides on early diagnosis depending to secondary prevention programs.

ABSTRACT

The authors report their experience on 149 surgical operations for thyroid nodules between 1979 and 1991 period. They underline the diagnostic preoperative difficulties related to solitary nodules existent before the fine needle-aspiration. Finally they observe that cytologic diagnosis allow to select malignant and benign lesions and planning surgical treatment.

ABSTRACT

On pre-operative period can be specify the histologic diagnosis with fine needle-aspiration. The authors present their experience data on 147 cases between 1988 and 1990. They underline that FNA is a simple examen that offer many advantages and then should be executed on all mammary nodules to decide if is needed surgical treatment and eventually which one.

ABSTRACT

The amino acid sequence of the eclosion hormone from the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta has been determined, using less than 500 pmol of protein and microanalytical techniques. The protein contains 62 amino acid residues and has a molecular mass of 6813 Da. The amino-terminal sequence is similar to that of a 13-residue segment at the amino terminus of the eclosion hormone of the silkworm Bombyx mori, but the hormone is not otherwise homologous with other hormones or proteins.

ABSTRACT

In order to assess the qualitative and quantitative differences in physical performance, twenty sedentary females (Group A), twenty sedentary males (Group B) and twenty amateur sportsmen who jogged 45-60 min 2-3 times a week (Group C), have been evaluated by spiroergometric test on bicycle ergometer. At the submaximal level of 90 Watts the cardiorespiratory efficiency, as reflected by the values of double product (DP) and ventilatory equivalent (VE) was statistically different in the three Groups (A less than B less than C). At the maximal work the females, compared to sedentary males, achieved lower values (P less than 0.001) of maximal working capacity (MWC), total work (TW), systolic blood pressure (SBP), maximal O2 uptake (VO2 max), O2 pulse (O2P) and a greater (P less than 0.001) energetic cost (EC = HRmax/TW): sedentary males, compared to amateur sportsmen, achieved lower values (P less than 0.001) of MWC, TW, VO2 max, O2P and greater values (P less than 0.001) of VE, EC, HR, and DP (P less than 0.02). The lower VO2 max in females can be mainly ascribed to the lower stroke volume which in turn correlates with smaller body surface area. The greater VO2 max and O2P max of amateur sportsmen can be ascribed to larger stroke volume and muscular O2 uptake brought about by jogging. Furthermore the females, compared to sedentary males, have achieved VO2 max and O2P max that were 29% lower, a TW 43% lower, while EC was 73,4% higher. The sedentary males, compared to amateur sportsmen, have achieved lower values of VO2 max (-14,3%), O2P max (-17,5%) and TW (-31,3%) with DP and EC 8,3% and 50,7% higher, respectively. On the grounds of these data sedentary subjects, particularly females, pay a high energetic cost during physical activity. The practice of an aerobic sport such as jogging, may notably increase cardiovascular and respiratory efficiency.
