ABSTRACT

The protective role of hyperimmune serum in the prevention of Haemophilus parasuis infections in post-weaned piglets was assessed by experimental challenge. The hyperimmune serum was obtained from a pig vaccinated with a commercial vaccine against Glässer's disease. Thirty-eight weaned piglets were divided into four groups: three groups were immunised intramuscularly with 10 ml of hyperimmune serum and one group consisted of unimmunised control animals. All piglets were subsequently infected intraperitoneally with H. parasuis serotype 5 at different times after immunisation. The use of hyperimmune serum provided the piglets with partial protection against experimental infection. The levels of protection indirectly depend on time between serum inoculation and challenge infection. The best protection of piglets against experimental infection was obtained in the group immunised 1 week before inoculation; the same group in which the highest levels of antibodies were detected at the time of challenge.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Aortic allograft implantation into the aortic position in adults is standard procedure with some controversary. The most popular indication is bacterial endocarditis. We would like to present our midterm results. RESULTS: We implanted 61 allografts in 60 patients (between 10/2002 and 04/2008). Men were 46 (76.8%) and average age was 57 +/- 10.76 year. 30 days mortality was 9 people (15.0%, all with bacterial endocarditis). Late mortality 1 man (1.6%). Follow up 1-66 months, average 39.18 SD +/- 14.3 months, median 42 months. CONCLUSION: Implantation of aortic allograft into the aortic position is standard procedure with good midterm results. Relative high early mortality is dependent on preoperative status in patiens with acute bacterial endocarditis--all early death people were people with acute bacterial endocarditis and minimally one vital organ severe dysfunction.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: The authors evaluate the results of 100 carotid endarterectomies in 88 patients, 70 plus years old, operated between April 1997 and December 2000. Regional anaesthesia was always used. The use of intraluminal shunt was selective (11%), on the basis of consciousness and the neurological status. Operating microscope and microsurgical technique were used in all cases. Neither 30-d morbidity nor mortality has been detected in the group. Medical morbidity has been recorded in 2 patients. CONCLUSION: Carotid microendarterectomy in regional anesthesia represents effective procedure for patients in the old age.

ABSTRACT

A periplasmic protein able to transfer electrons from cytoplasmic membrane to the periplasmic nitrite reductase (cytochrome cd1) has been purified from the anoxically grown cytochrome c550 mutant strain Pd2121 and shown to be pseudoazurin by several independent criteria (molecular mass, copper content, visible spectrum, N-terminal amino acid sequence). Under our assay conditions, the half-saturation of electron transport occurred at about 10 microM pseudoazurin; the reaction was retarded by increasing ionic strength.

ABSTRACT

Dynamics and persistence of antibody responses to immunization and reimmunization of rabbits with BHV-1 ISCOMs or BHV-1 liposomes were investigated for 20 weeks and compared with those induced by a commercial vaccine against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) or free BHV-1 protein subunits. Comparable levels of antibodies to BHV-1, determined by ELISA, were found throughout the observation period in rabbits treated with BHV-1 ISCOMs or the commercial vaccine. The immunogenicity of BHV-1 liposomes was higher than that of the free virus proteins, but lower than those of BHV-1 ISCOMs or the commercial vaccine. Virus neutralization test confirmed the best immunostimulatory effect of BHV-1 ISCOMs as far as the levels and the persistence of antibodies were concerned. The reactivities of the specific virus protein subunits with anti-BHV-1 antibodies elicited in rabbits immunized with BHV-1 ISCOMs or the commercial vaccine were compared by Western blotting. The patterns of the bands were similar, but some differences were found in their numbers and intensities.
