ABSTRACT

We present a case of a 23-year-old male patient with complaints of fever, cough, and persistent anemia for the past 6 months and with a known history of hereditary spherocytosis. Computed tomography (CT) thorax demonstrated multiple paravertebral lesions in the bilateral thoracic cavities, suggestive of lymphadenopathy; subsequently, 18Flurodeoxyglucose PET/CT was done with suspicion of lymphoma, which showed no significant metabolic activity in those lesions. Thus, in view of clinical and metabolic status, lesions were considered extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH). This case highlights the importance of considering EMH, while interpreting suspicious lymphadenopathy in cases of chronic anemia and also possible scan findings in the same.

ABSTRACT

A study was undertaken to discriminate the strains of Aeromonas hydrophila isolated from fish and diarrhoeal samples by SDS-PAGE analysis of outer membrane proteins (OMPs) and lipopolysaccharides (LPSs). Common bands at 47 kDa positions for OMPs and at 31-38 kDa for LPSs were observed. No strain of A. hydrophila from clinical or fish samples was found identical in either OMPs or LPSs profile.

ABSTRACT

In 7 instances between 2000 and 2003, clinical investigation of populations of fresh- and seawater-reared, vaccinated, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar suffering total losses of between 0.1 and 35 % revealed infection with a Gram-positive rod-shaped bacterium. The isolations were geographically widespread, occurring in both Norway and Scotland. In all cases, a Gram-positive bacterium, subsequently identified as Rhodococcus erythropolis, was isolated in pure culture. Infections, although systemic, were focused within the peritoneal cavity. While initial attempts to reproduce the disease by intraperitoneal injection of unvaccinated Atlantic salmon failed, Koch's postulates were subsequently fulfilled in fish vaccinated with a commercially available oil-adjuvanted vaccine.
