ABSTRACT

Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a pressing global healthcare challenge. Innovative strategies that integrate superior medical and nutritional practices are essential for holistic care. As such, pulse consumption is encouraged for its potential benefit in reducing hypercholesterolaemia, dyslipidaemia, and triglyceride levels, as well as enhancing glycaemic control. This scoping review aims to assess the depth of evidence supporting the recommendation for pulse consumption in T2DM management and to identify gaps in the existing literature. We conducted a comprehensive search across the databases MEDLINE, Global Health, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library (up to July 2023). We included population-based studies of any design, and excluded review-style articles. Articles published in languages other than English were also excluded. From the 2449 studies initially identified, 28 met our inclusion criteria. Acute postprandial trials demonstrated improved glucose responses and enhanced insulin responses to pulse-based intervention. Meanwhile, long-term trials reported meaningful improvements in T2DM indicators such as haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c), fasting glucose, fasting insulin, C-peptide, and markers of insulin resistance like homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). Integrating more pulses into the diets of diabetic individuals might offer an efficient and cost-effective strategy in the global initiative to combat T2DM.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Protein quality of the red kidney bean (RKB), a common source of dietary protein, has been assessed using the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) determined in animal models using mainly oro-fecal digestibility. More recently, the FAO recommended to use digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) instead of PDCAAS but highlighted insufficient data on true ileal indispensable amino acid (IAA) digestibility of proteins because amino acids are absorbed in the ileum. OBJECTIVES: Using a recently developed dual stable isotope tracer method, we aimed to measure each IAA digestibility as representation of true ileal digestibility of the RKB, Phaseolus vulgaris, in humans consuming a typical Jamaican meal. METHODS: RKB-IAAs were intrinsically labeled by adding 2H2O to the plants. Uniformly labeled-[13C]-spirulina (standard protein) was added to a meal prepared with the labeled RKB and fed to 10 healthy adults (5 males, 5 females) in a nonrandomized trial as primed/intermittent doses to achieve a steady state IAA enrichment in plasma. Enrichment of 2H- and 13C-labeled IAA in plasma and the bean was measured by mass spectrometry. Each IAA digestibility (except tryptophan and histidine) was calculated as the ratio of plasma 2H-IAA to meal 2H-IAA divided by the ratio of plasma 13C-IAA to meal 13C-IAA adjusted for loss of 2H-atom during transamination and digestibility of spirulina. RESULTS: Adequate IAA labeling (>1000 ppm 2H excess) and plasma plateau isotopic enrichment were achieved. Mean RKB-IAA digestibility (%) was 79.4 ± 0.5, ranging from 69.0 ± 1.2 (threonine) to 85.7 ± 1.7 (lysine). CONCLUSION: The dual stable isotope tracer digestibility data are similar to published oro-fecal digestibility supporting substantial nitrogen exchange in the colon. The individual IAA digestibility is useful to derive DIAAS to replace PDCAAS. Using published RKB-IAA composition, extrapolated DIAAS was 0.63 based on the lowest score for methionine. ABSTRACT

The study explored the suitability of unfractionated extracts from the seeds of the Moringa oleifera tree as a coagulant for water treatment. The coagulant was obtained by soaking crushed and sieved seeds in a low salinity aqueous solution: a simple and inexpensive alternative to conventional coagulants in settings where specialized expertise and equipment are lacking. The performance of M. oleifera-derived coagulants was quantified in terms of turbidity removal, bacteriophage clearance, concentration of residual organics, as well as meta-parameters such as floc size and fractal dimension. Treating high turbidity clay suspensions at the optimal coagulant dosage (14.7 mg(DOC)/L) and flocculation mixing conditions ([Formula: see text]= 22.4 s-1) removed > 94% of turbidity, similar to that recorded in reference tests with alum. Floc size distribution shifted to larger sizes during the first 10 min of flocculation with no change afterwards, while the floc fractal dimension, [Formula: see text], continued to increase, pointing to the gradual formation of denser ([Formula: see text]= 2.1 to 2.2), more settleable flocs. Preliminary tests with MS2 bacteriophage showed that coagulation with M. oleifera decreased the viable MS2 titre by ~ 1.3 log, which was significantly above the turbidity removal (~ 1 log). The extraction process, however, allowed a large amount of residual organics (> 78% of extracted DOC) into the treated water. Combining the coagulants with downstream filtration and adsorption, employing UV or solar disinfection, or limiting applications to non-potable reuse is suggested for mitigating the concerns related to residual DOC.

ABSTRACT

As 3D Printing methods have improved and newer advanced materials have been introduced then the ability to create a range of 3D printed prosthetic devices has developed. 3D Printing has allowed us to produce prosthetic devices that are customised to the needs of a patient. As a result, 3D printing offers a way towards the manufacture of ultraprecise patient-specific prosthetic devices to be generated at the point of care within the hospital. Because prosthetic devices can be cost effectively made to be patient specific, then they can in many circumstances improve patient recovery time (Aimar et al., 2019) [1]. We have recently used 3D printed to make a range of orthopaedic, oncology, plastics, and paediatric prosthetics.

ABSTRACT

Microtia is a congenital deformity where the pinna is underdeveloped. Contraindications to rib surgery for microtia reconstruction include high-risk surgical status and chest-wall deformities [1-2]. However does stem-cell-based 3D Bioprinting offer revolutionary therapeutic options for patients with such tissue abnormalities. As a technology, 3D-bioprinting is being developed to generate homogeneous tissues by depositing a low viscosity printable cellular-active gel which matures into a tissue [3]. Currently on-going research is developing the process towards producing cartilage tissues for use in reconstructive surgery. This process focuses on using the natural self-organising properties of cells in order to produce a functional tissue which has measurable: mechanical, metabolic and functional properties.
