ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigated the effects of different diets on the development and reproduction of the predatory mite Amblyseius eharai. The results show that feeding on citrus red mite (Panonychus citri) led to the fastest life cycle completion (6.9 ± 0.22 days), the longest oviposition period (26.19 ± 0.46 days), the greatest female longevity (42.03 ± 0.43 days), and the highest total number of eggs per female (45.63 ± 0.94 eggs). Feeding on Artemia fanciscana cysts resulted in the highest oviposition rate (1.98 ± 0.04 eggs), a high total number of eggs per female (33.93 ± 0.36 eggs), and the highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm = 0.242). The hatching rate did not differ significantly among the five types of food, and the proportion of females ranged from 60% to 65% across all diets.

ABSTRACT

Conjoined twins are a rare congenital abnormality with an estimated incidence of 1:50,000 pregnancies and 1:200,000 live births. Pygopagus twins are characterized by sacrococcygeal fusion that is commonly associated with perineal and spinal abnormalities. Management of this complex disease requires a well-developed surgical system with multidisciplinary capacity and expertise.A decade ago there were no dedicated pediatric neurosurgeons in southern Vietnam. This has changed within a few short years; there are now 10 dedicated pediatric neurosurgeons with continually expanding technical capacity. In August 2017 a multidisciplinary surgical and anesthetic team successfully separated female pygopagus twins with fused sacrum and spinal cord with associated myelomeningocele defect.The authors present here the first successful separation of pygopagus twins in Vietnam as a representative case of gradual and sustainable pediatric neurosurgical scale-up.

ABSTRACT

A total of 239 isolates of blast (Pyricularia oryzae Cavara) collected from northern and central Vietnam showed a wide variation in pathogenicity based on the reaction patterns to 25 differential varieties (DVs) harboring 23 resistance genes and susceptible cultivar Lijiangxintuanheigu (LTH). The frequencies of isolates virulent toward DVs for Pish, Pik-m, Pi1, Pik-h, Pik, Pik-p, Pi7(t), Pi9(t), Piz-5, Pita-2, and Pita were low, but they were high for DVs for Pib, Pit, Pia, Pii, Pi3, Pi5(t), Pik-s, Piz, Piz-t, Pi12(t), Pi19(t), and Pi20(t). Isolates were classified into three cluster groups Ia, Ib, and II based on reaction patterns to DVs and LTH. The frequencies of isolates virulent toward 11 DVs for Pik-m, Pi1, Pik-h, Pik, Pik-p, Pi7(t), Pi9(t), Piz, Piz-5, Pita-2, and Pita in cluster II and DV for Piz-t were higher and lower than those of Ia and Ib, respectively. The frequencies to DVs for Pii, Pi3, Pi5(t), and Piz-t were different between clusters Ia and Ib. Clusters Ia and Ib were distributed with similar frequencies in the northeast, north central, and south central coast regions, but the frequencies among three cluster groups in the Red River Delta and northwest regions were different. This means that the blast races in these two regions were different from the others. Overall, the blast isolates were categorized into 153 races. Among them, 26 were selected as a set of standard differential blast isolates for characterizing 23 resistance genes and developing a differential system in Vietnam.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a simultaneous isolation of pure, intact chloroplasts and mitochondria from mature leaves of Ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) and mitochondrial protein preparation for two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) analysis under well watered and water -deficit stressed treatments. The washed chloroplasts and mitochondria were purified with Percoll gradients prepared using a Master flex R pump. The chloroplast and mitochondrial proteins were extracted in lysis buffer containing a protease inhibitor mix supplemented with 1 µM Leupeptin and 1 µM E64, followed by precipitation with ice-cold acetone. The protein contents were determined by an EZQ protein quantitation kit. The results show that chloroplast and mitochondria isolated from Ice plant leaves via this protocol have pure and intact. The shape of chloroplast and mitochondria observed by microscopy were clear and sharp. This procedure was employed for assessing the significant differences in mitochondrial protein expression patterns from the well watered and water-deficit stressed treatment leaves collected at dawn (6 a.m.) and dusk (6 p.m.). The results showed 71 and 20 differentially abundant spots between control and CAM for 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. In addition, 32 protein spots were differentially abundant for 6 a.m. control compared with 6 p.m. control, and 45 protein spots were differentially abundant for 6 a.m. CAM compared with 6 p.m. CAM. Spots that displayed differential abundance for control compared with CAM likely included proteins involved in mitochondrial processes necessary for CAM function. Through further analysis, these proteins will be identified and characterized in the near future using mass-spectrometry-based techniques.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Little is know about whether the effects of community engagement interventions for child survival in low-income and middle-income settings are sustained. Seasonal variation and secular trend may blur the data. Neonatal mortality was reduced in a cluster-randomised trial in Vietnam where laywomen facilitated groups composed of local stakeholders employing a problem-solving approach for 3 years. In this analysis, we aim at disentangling the secular trend, the seasonal variation and the effect of the intervention on neonatal mortality during and after the trial. METHODS: In Quang Ninh province, 44 communes were allocated to intervention and 46 to control. Births and neonatal deaths were assessed in a baseline survey in 2005, monitored during the trial in 2008-2011 and followed up by a survey in 2014. Time series analyses were performed on monthly neonatal mortality data. RESULTS: There were 30 187 live births and 480 neonatal deaths. The intervention reduced the neonatal mortality from 19.1 to 11.6 per 1000 live births. The reduction was sustained 3 years after the trial. The control areas reached a similar level at the time of follow-up. Time series decomposition analysis revealed a downward trend in the intervention areas during the trial that was not found in the control areas. Neonatal mortality peaked in the hot and wet summers. CONCLUSIONS: A community engagement intervention resulted in a lower neonatal mortality rate that was sustained but not further reduced after the end of the trial. When decomposing time series of neonatal mortality, a clear downward trend was demonstrated in intervention but not in control areas. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ISRCTN44599712, Post-results.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Annually, 2.8 million neonatal deaths occur worldwide, despite the fact that three-quarters of them could be prevented if available evidence-based interventions were used. Facilitation of community groups has been recognized as a promising method to translate knowledge into practice. In northern Vietnam, the Neonatal Health - Knowledge Into Practice trial evaluated facilitation of community groups (2008-2011) and succeeded in reducing the neonatal mortality rate (adjusted odds ratio, 0.51; 95 % confidence interval 0.30-0.89). The aim of this paper is to report on the process (implementation and mechanism of impact) of this intervention. METHODS: Process data were excerpted from diary information from meetings with facilitators and intervention groups, and from supervisor records of monthly meetings with facilitators. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. An evaluation including attributes and skills of facilitators (e.g., group management, communication, and commitment) was performed at the end of the intervention using a six-item instrument. Odds ratios were analyzed, adjusted for cluster randomization using general linear mixed models. RESULTS: To ensure eight active facilitators over 3 years, 11 Women's Union representatives were recruited and trained. Of the 44 intervention groups, composed of health staff and commune stakeholders, 43 completed their activities until the end of the study. In total, 95 % (n = 1508) of the intended monthly meetings with an intervention group and a facilitator were conducted. The overall attendance of intervention group members was 86 %. The groups identified 32 unique problems and implemented 39 unique actions. The identified problems targeted health issues concerning both women and neonates. Actions implemented were mainly communication activities. Communes supported by a group with a facilitator who was rated high on attributes and skills (n = 27) had lower odds of neonatal mortality (odds ratio, 0.37; 95 % confidence interval, 0.19-0.73) than control communes (n = 46). CONCLUSIONS: This evaluation identified several factors that might have influenced the outcomes of the trial: continuity of intervention groups' work, adequate attributes and skills of facilitators, and targeting problems along a continuum of care. ABSTRACT

In this paper, we demonstrate the synthesis of monodispersed silver nanoparticles (NPs) of controlled size (20.5 +/- 3.3 nm) in aqueous phase from a silver hydroxide precursor with sodium acrylate as dual reducing-capping agent. We then coat these NPs in a layer of gold with controllable thickness through a reduction-deposition process. The materials are characterized using several techniques including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that we were able to synthesize not only monodispersed Ag NPs but also core-shell Ag-Au NPs with a discrete structure, which is significant because of the challenges associated with the creation of such materials, namely the propensity of metallic Ag to be oxidized by the presence of ionic Au. The NPs are of interest for use in a wide range of potential applications, including biomedical diagnostics and biomolecular detection as well as many others.

ABSTRACT

We present a new type of nanoparticle-based DNA sensor using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) on gold nanoparticle (Au NP) aggregates formed by DNA photoligation. The DNA sensor exploits the photoligation reaction between oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) attached to the surfaces of Au NPs in the presence of target DNA (T-DNA). When hybridization takes place between the ODNs and T-DNA, Au NPs are covalently crosslinked to form aggregates via photoligation. Once the NP aggregates are formed, the interspace between Au NPs in the aggregate act as a stable "hot spot", and a SERS signal from the Raman-active molecules (sodium cacodylate) present in the hot spot is easily and sensitively detected. In contrast, a SERS signal is not detected if the hybridization is unsuccessful, because the stable hot spot does not form. This DNA sensor does not require an enzymatic reaction, fluorescent dye, precise temperature control, or complicated operating procedures.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among women attending an antenatal clinic in urban China and to show whether reported symptoms and findings on clinical examination predicted STIs in this population. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 504 pregnant women attending an antenatal clinic in Fuzhou, China. Structured questionnaires were used to collect demographic and behavioral information, and clinical and gynecologic examinations were performed to detect clinical signs of STIs. Blood samples, vaginal swabs, and cervical swabs were collected, respectively, to test for antibodies to syphilis, culture Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis), and perform PCR to detect Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (N. gonorrhoeae). RESULTS: C trachomatis was detected in 51 (10.1%), N gonorrhoeae in 4 (0.8%), T vaginalis in 16 (3.2%), and syphilis in 1 (0.2%) of the 504 pregnant women. Fifty-two (73%) of 71 women with any STI were asymptomatic. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that age RMB 2000 yuan (OR=3.57) were significant independent risk factors for chlamydial infection (P<0.05). The reported symptom of vaginal discharge or the clinical sign of either vaginal or cervical discharge poorly predicted infection with C trachomatis, N gonorrhoeae, or T vaginalis, with a positive predictive value <25% for each STI. CONCLUSION: A substantial prevalence of STIs, including a large proportion of asymptomatic infections, was found among pregnant women in the study area. These results support a strategy of screening pregnant women for bacterial STIs (followed by treatment of infections), which could be integrated into routine pregnancy care in China.
