ABSTRACT

Uranium as a nuclear fuel, its source and aftertreatment has been a hot topic of debate for developers. In this paper, amidoxime and guanidino-modified cotton fibers (DC-AO-PHMG) were synthesized by the two-step functionalization approach, which exhibited remarkable antimicrobial and high uranium recovery property. Adsorption tests revealed that DC-AO-PHMG had excellent selectivity and anti-interference properties, the maximum adsorption capacity of 609.75 mg/g. More than 85 % adsorption capacity could still be kept after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles, and it conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model as a spontaneous heat-absorbing chemical monolayer process. FT-IR, EDS and XPS analyses speculated that the amidoxime and amino synergistically increased the uranium uptake. The inhibitory activities of DC-AO-PHMG against three aquatic bacteria, BEY, BEL (from Yellow River water and lake bottom silt, respectively) and B. subtilis were significantly stronger, and the uranium adsorption was not impacted by the high bacteria content. Most importantly, DC-AO-PHMG removed up to 94 % of uranium in simulated seawater and extracted up to 4.65 mg/g of uranium from Salt Lake water, which demonstrated its great potential in the field of uranium resource recovery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative complications are vital factors affecting the prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), especially for complex hepatectomy. The present study aimed to compare perioperative complications between laparoscopic and robotic complex hepatectomy (LCH vs. RCH). METHODS: Patients with solitary HCC after complex hepatectomy were collected from a multicenter database. Propensity score-matched (PSM) analysis was adopted to control confounding bias. Multivariable analysis was performed to determine the prognostic factors. RESULTS: 436 patients were included. After PSM, 43 patients were included in both the LCH and RCH groups. The results showed that compared to LCH, RCH had lower rates of blood loss and transfusion, and lower postoperative 30-day and major morbidity, and post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) (all P < 0.05). Additionally, the length of hospital stay was shorter in the RCH group (P = 0.026). Multivariable analysis showed RCH is an independent protective factor for reducing the 30-day morbidity, major morbidity and PHLF. CONCLUSION: RCH has advantages over LCH in the minimally invasive treatment of complex HCC, as it can reduce the incidence of postoperative morbidity. Therefore, RCH should be considered for patients with HCC who require complex hepatectomy.

ABSTRACT

Microwave ablation (MWA) is recognized as a novel treatment modality that can kill tumor cells by heating the ions and polar molecules in these cells through high-speed rotation and friction. However, the size and location of the tumor affect the effective ablation range of microwave hyperthermia, resulting in residual tumor tissue and a high recurrence rate. Due to their tunable porous structure and high specific surface area, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can serve as microwave sensitizers, promoting microwave energy conversion owing to ion collisions in the porous structure of the MOFs. Moreover, iron-based compounds are known to possess peroxidase-like catalytic activity. Therefore, Fe-doped Cu bimetallic MOFs (FCMs) were prepared through a hydrothermal process. These FCM nanoparticles not only increased the efficiency of microwave-thermal energy conversion as microwave sensitizers but also promoted the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by consuming glutathione (GSH) and promoted the Fenton reaction to enhance microwave dynamic therapy (MDT). The in vitro and in vivo results showed that the combination of MWA and MDT treatment effectively destroyed tumor tissues via microwave irradiation without inducing significant side effects on normal tissues. This study provides a new approach for the combined application of MOFs and microwave ablation, demonstrating excellent potential for future applications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Complications after laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) are important factors affecting the prognosis of patients, especially for complex hepatobiliary diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the value of a three-dimensional (3D) printed dry-laboratory model in the precise planning of LLR for complex hepatobiliary diseases. METHODS: Patients with complex hepatobiliary diseases who underwent LLR were preoperatively enrolled, and divided into two groups according to whether using a 3D-printed dry-laboratory model (3D vs. control group). Clinical variables were assessed and complications were graded by the Clavien-Dindo classification. The Comprehensive Complication Index (CCI) scores were calculated and compared for each patient. Multivariable analysis was performed to determine the risk factors of postoperative complications. RESULTS: Sixty-two patients with complex hepatobiliary diseases underwent the precise planning of LLR. Among them, thirty-one patients acquired the guidance of a 3D-printed dry-laboratory model, and others were only guided by traditional enhanced CT or MRI. The results showed no significant differences between the two groups in baseline characters. However, compared to the control group, the 3D group had a lower incidence of intraoperative blood loss, as well as postoperative 30-day and major complications, especially bile leakage (all P < 0.05). The median score on the CCI was 20.9 (range 8.7-51.8) in the control group and 8.7 (range 8.7-43.4) in the 3D group (mean difference, -12.2, P = 0.004). Multivariable analysis showed the 3D model was an independent protective factor in decreasing postoperative complications. Subgroup analysis also showed that a 3D model could decrease postoperative complications, especially for bile leakage in patients with intrahepatic cholelithiasis. CONCLUSION: The 3D-printed models can help reduce postoperative complications. The 3D-printed models should be recommended for patients with complex hepatobiliary diseases undergoing precise planning LLR.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidences shows that the ubiquitin‒proteasome pathway plays a pivotal role in tumor progression. The expression of 26S proteasome non-ATPase regulatory subunit 9 (PSMD9) is correlated with recurrence and radiotherapy resistance in several tumor types. However, the role and mechanism of PSMD9 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression remain largely unclear. METHODS: PSMD9 was identified as a prognosis-related biomarker for HCC based on analysis of clinical characteristics and RNA-seq data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and the JP Project of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC-LIRI-JP). PSMD9 expression was analyzed in cancer tissues and adjacent noncancerous tissues via immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Multiple in vivo and in vitro experimental techniques (such as CCK-8, colony formation, EdU, and Transwell assays; flow cytometry; Western blotting; quantitative RT-PCR; Coimmunoprecipitation assay and immunofluorescence confocal imaging) were used to assess the functions of PSMD9 in the pathogenesis of HCC. RESULTS: We found that the expression of PSMD9 was upregulated and associated with a poor prognosis in HCC patients. PSMD9 promoted HCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion and metastasis. Knockdown of PSMD9 significantly inhibited HCC cell proliferation by inducing G1/S cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that PSMD9 promoted HCC cell proliferation and metastasis via direct interaction with the E3 ubiquitin ligase c-Cbl, suppresses EGFR ubiquitination, influenced EGFR endosomal trafficking and degradation and subsequently activated ERK1/2 and Akt signaling. In addition, we showed that PSMD9 knockdown sensitized HCC cells to the tyrosine kinase inhibitor erlotinib in vitro and in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our results indicate that PSMD9 drives HCC progression and erlotinib resistance by suppressing c-Cbl mediated EGFR ubiquitination and therefore can be a potential therapeutic target for HCC.

ABSTRACT

The emergence of convolutional neural network (CNN) and transformer has recently facilitated significant advances in image super-resolution (SR) tasks. However, these networks commonly construct complex structures, having huge model parameters and high computational costs, to boost reconstruction performance. In addition, they do not consider the structural prior well, which is not conducive to high-quality image reconstruction. In this work, we devise a lightweight interactive feature inference network (IFIN), complementing the strengths of CNN and Transformer, for effective image SR reconstruction. Specifically, the interactive feature aggregation module (IFAM), implemented by structure-aware attention block (SAAB), Swin Transformer block (SWTB), and enhanced spatial adaptive block (ESAB), serves as the network backbone, progressively extracts more dedicated features to facilitate the reconstruction of high-frequency details in the image. SAAB adaptively recalibrates local salient structural information, and SWTB effectively captures rich global information. Further, ESAB synergetically complements local and global priors to ensure the consistent fusion of diverse features, achieving high-quality reconstruction of images. Comprehensive experiments reveal that our proposed networks attain state-of-the-art reconstruction accuracy on benchmark datasets while maintaining low computational demands. ABSTRACT

Geometric and topological properties of protein structures, including surface pockets, interior cavities and cross channels, are of fundamental importance for proteins to carry out their functions. Computed Atlas of Surface Topography of proteins (CASTp) is a widely used web server for locating, delineating, and measuring these geometric and topological properties of protein structures. Recent developments in AI-based protein structure prediction such as AlphaFold2 (AF2) have significantly expanded our knowledge on protein structures. Here we present CASTpFold, a continuation of CASTp that provides accurate and comprehensive identifications and quantifications of protein topography. It now provides (i) results on an expanded database of proteins, including the Protein Data Bank (PDB) and non-singleton representative structures of AlphaFold2 structures, covering 183 million AF2 structures; (ii) functional pockets prediction with corresponding Gene Ontology (GO) terms or Enzyme Commission (EC) numbers for AF2-predicted structures and (iii) pocket similarity search function for surface and protein-protein interface pockets. We combined synchrotron-based infrared absorbance and Raman scattering spectroscopies with diamond anvil cell techniques and a symmetry analysis to explore the properties of multiferroic (NH4)2FeCl5·H2O under extreme pressure-temperature conditions. Compression-induced splitting of the Fe-Cl stretching, Cl-Fe-Cl and Cl-Fe-O bending, and NH4+ librational modes defines two structural phase transitions, and a group-subgroup analysis reveals space group sequences that vary depending upon proximity to the unexpectedly wide order-disorder transition. We bring these findings together with prior high-field work to develop the pressure-temperature-magnetic field phase diagram uncovering competing polar, chiral, and magnetic phases in this system.

Small nucleic acid drugs mainly include small interfering RNA(siRNA), antisense oligonucleotide(ASO), microRNA(miRNA), messenger RNA(mRNA), nucleic acid aptamer(aptamer), and so on. Its translation or regulation can be inhibited by binding to the RNA of the target molecule. Due to its strong specificity, persistence, and curability, small nucleic acid drugs have received considerable attention in recent years. Recent studies have shown that some miRNAs from animal and plant sources can stably exist in the blood, tissue, and organs of animals and human beings and exert pharmacological action by regulating the expression of various target proteins. This paper summarized the discovery of small nucleic acids derived from traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) and natural drugs and their cross-border regulatory mechanisms and discussed the technical challenges and regulatory issues brought by this new drug, which can provide new ideas and methods for explaining the complex mechanism of TCM, developing new drugs of small nucleic acids from TCM and natural medicine, and conducting regulatory scientific research.

ABSTRACT

Chronic low-grade inflammation(CLGI), a relatively new concept without a clear definition, refers to a nonspecific, chronic, continuous, and low-grade inflammation state, and it is closely associated with various chronic diseases, including obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and tumors. Improvement of CLGI can slow down disease progression. Anti-inflammatory treatment is an important strategy for prevention and treatment of CLGI. However, there is currently no definitive drug treatment method. Curcumin is a polyphenolic compound extracted from the rhizome of zingiberaceae, with significant anti-inflammatory activity. Research has shown that curcumin can play an anti-inflammatory role by regulating NF-κB, JAK/STAT, PI3K/Akt, MAPK, NLRP3 inflammasome, Nrf2/ARE, and other inflammation-related pathways. This paper summarized the anti-inflammatory mechanisms, pharmacological effect, and clinical application of curcumin in improving CLGI and other diseases, so as to provide a reference for in-depth research and clinical application of curcumin in improving CLGI.

ABSTRACT

In the new stage of trans-omics and trans-subjects for medicinal plants, it is an urgent need to integrate big data, provide interactive applications, and form a unified and multi-level research system and big data platform. Dao-di medicinal material, as an important source of medicinal plants, is a unique quality concept and comprehensive standard of tranditional Chinese medicine(TCM). Several databases have been developed in China and abroad, such as the Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine(ETCM) and the Global Pharmacopoeia Genome Database(GPGD). Yet, most databases do not provide multi-dimensional data, including geographic data, phenotype data, compound data, and genetic data. Sichuan, known as the hometown of TCM therapies and the treasure trove of TCM, is the most representative region of medicinal plant diversity in China. According to the latest data of the fourth national survey of TCM resources, there are more than 8 000 TCM and 86 Dao-di medicinal materials in Sichuan province. Based on resource census data and relevant achievements, this study constructed the bioinformatics database of medicinal plants and the visual analysis platform of production layout by taking the Dao-di medicinal materials in Sichuan province as an example, covering geographic data, phenotype data, compound data, and genetic data. It effectively integrates multi-dimensional data of Dao-di medicinal materials and provides different levels of data interaction applications. The platform is the first large-scale multi-dimensional database and visual platform of Dao-di medicinal materials in Sichuan province, which serves as an essential resource for germplasm resources identification, decomposition of biosynthetic pathways, molecular breeding of varieties and provides medicinal plant resource information and data support for development and utilization of medicinal plants in China and abroad.

BACKGROUND: Chronic gastritis (CG) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by inflammation of the stomach lining. Liver-stomach disharmony (LSD) syndrome is believed to contribute to CG symptoms. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of microcosmic syndrome differentiation and Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) treatment in patients with CG and LSD syndrome. METHODS: Sixty-four patients with CG and LSD syndrome were randomly divided into two groups: The treatment group received CHM based on microcosmic syndrome differentiation and the control group received conventional Western medicine. The treatment course lasted 12 wk. The primary outcome was improvement in dyspeptic symptoms, measured using the Nepean Dyspepsia Index. The secondary outcomes included the improvement rate of endoscopic findings, histopathological findings, and microcosmic syndrome scores and the incidence of adverse events. RESULTS: After 12 wk of treatment, the treatment group showed significantly greater improvement in dyspeptic symptoms than the control group (93.75% vs 65.63%, P < 0.01). The treatment group also showed a significantly higher improvement rate in endoscopic findings than the control group (81.25% vs 53.13%, P < 0.05). The improvement rates of histopathological findings and microcosmic syndrome scores were not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). No serious adverse events were observed in either group. CONCLUSION: Microcosmic syndrome differentiation and CHM treatment can effectively improve dyspeptic symptoms and endoscopic findings in patients with CG and LSD syndrome and have a good safety profile. Further studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are required to confirm the long-term efficacy and mechanism of action of this treatment.

ABSTRACT

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Comprehensive description of the global burden of MDD and its attributable risk factors is essential for policymaking but currently lacking. In this study, we aim to estimate the burden of MDD in terms of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs), along with its attributable risk factors at global, regional, and rational level between 1990 and 2019, using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019. Data analysis was completed on July 1, 2023. In 2019, 274.80 million (95 % uncertainty interval [UI], 241.28 to 312.77) new cases of MDD were identified globally, with an increase of 59 % from 1990. A total of 37.20 million (25.65 to 51.22) YLDs were attributable to MDD, accounting for the largest proportion of mental disorder YLDs (29.7 %). Countries in the low sociodemographic index quantile exhibited the highest age-standardized incidence rate of MDD, with Uganda (7836.2, per 100,000 person-years, 6713.7 to 9181.1) and Palestine (7687.7, 6546.1 to 9023.9) reporting the highest rates among them. The United States had the highest increase in age-standardized rates, with an average annual percent change of 0.99. Females had 1.6 times higher age-standardised rates than males, ranging from 1.2 (Oceania) to 2.2 (tropical Latin America) times across 21 regions. Globally, the proportions of YLDs due to MDD attributable to bullying victimization, childhood sexual abuse, and intimate partner violence were 4.86 %, 5.46 %, and 8.43 % in 2019, respectively. The heavy burden of MDD serves as a stark reminder that a coordinated response from governments and health communities is urgently needed to scale up mental health services and implement effective interventions, particularly in low-income countries.

The ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 is a significant concern, especially with the decrease in clinical sequencing efforts, which impedes the ability of public health sectors to prepare for the emergence of new variants and potential COVID-19 outbreaks. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been proposed as a surveillance program to detect and monitor the SARS-CoV-2 variants being transmitted in communities. However, research is limited in evaluating the effectiveness of wastewater collection at sentinel sites for monitoring disease prevalence and variant dynamics, especially in terms of inferring the epidemic patterns on a broader scale, such as at the state/province level. This study utilized a multiplexed tiling amplicon-based sequencing (ATOPlex) to track the longitudinal dynamics of variant of concern (VOC) in wastewater collected from municipalities in Queensland, Australia, spanning from 2020 to 2022. We demonstrated that wastewater epidemiology measured by ATOPlex exhibited a strong and consistent correlation with the number of daily confirmed cases. The VOC dynamics observed in wastewater closely aligned with the dynamic profile reported by clinical sequencing. Wastewater sequencing has the potential to provide early warning information for emerging variants. These findings suggest that WBE at sentinel sites, coupled with sensitive sequencing methods, provides a reliable and long-term disease surveillance strategy.

ABSTRACT

Boron-Nitrogen-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (BN-PAHs) as novel π-conjugated systems have attracted immense attention owing to their superior optoelectronic properties. However, constructing long-range ordered supramolecular assemblies based on BN-PAHs remains conspicuously scarce, primarily attributed to the constraints arising from coordinating multiple noncovalent interactions and the intrinsic characteristics of BN-PAHs, which hinder precise control over delicate self-assembly processes. Herein, we achieve the successful formation of BN-PAH-based controllable hierarchical assemblies through synergistically leveraged cation-π and C-H···π interactions. By carefully adjusting the solvent conditions in two progressive assembly hierarchies, the one-dimensional (1D) supramolecular assemblies with "rigid yet flexible" assembled units are first formed by cation-π interactions, and then they can be gradually fused into two-dimensional (2D) structures under specific C-H···π interactions, thus realizing the precise control of the transformation process from BN-PAH-based 1D primary structures to 2D higher-order assemblies. The resulting 2D-BNSA, characterized by enhanced electrical conductivity and ordered 2D layered structure, provides anchoring and dispersion sites for loading two appropriate nanocatalysts, thus facilitating the efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction (with a remarkable CH4 evolution rate of 938.7 µmol g-1 h-1) and electrocatalytic acetylene semihydrogenation (reaching a Faradaic efficiency for ethylene up to 98.5%).

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy and feasibility of robot-assisted cervical screw placement and factors that may affect the accuracy. METHODS: A comprehensive search was made on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wanfang Med for the selection of potential eligible literature. The outcomes were evaluated in terms of the relative risk (RR) or standardized mean difference (MD) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Subgroup analyses of the accuracy of screw placement at different cervical segments and with different screw placement approaches were performed. A comparison was made between robotic navigation and conventional freehand cervical screw placement. RESULTS: Six comparative cohort studies and five case series studies with 337 patients and 1342 cervical screws were included in this study. The perfect accuracy was 86% (95% CI, 82-89%) and the clinically acceptable rate was 98% (95% CI, 95-99%) in robot-assisted cervical screw placement. The perfect accuracy of robot-assisted C1 lateral mass screw placement was the highest (96%), followed by C6-7 pedicle screw placement (93%) and C2 pedicle screw placement (86%), and the lowest was C3-5 pedicle screw placement (75%). The open approach had a higher perfect accuracy than the percutaneous/intermuscular approach (91% vs 83%). Compared with conventional freehand cervical screw placement, robot-assisted cervical screw placement had a higher accuracy, a lower incidence of perioperative complications, and less intraoperative blood loss. CONCLUSION: With good collaboration between the operator and the robot, robot-assisted cervical screw placement is accurate and feasible. Robot-assisted cervical screw placement has a promising prospect.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of Erchen Decoction(ECD) on the prevention of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) in mice and explored its possible mechanism, so as to provide scientific data for the clinical application of ECD in the prevention of NASH. C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided into normal group(methionine and choline supplement, MCS), model group(methionine and choline deficient, MCD), low-dose ECD group(ECD_L, 6 g·kg~(-1)), medium-dose ECD group(ECD_M, 12 g·kg~(-1)), and high-dose ECD group(ECD_H, 24 g·kg~(-1)), with eight mice in each group. The MCS group was fed with an MCS diet, and the other groups were fed with an MCD diet. The mice in each group were given corresponding diets, but the drug intervention group was given low-, medium-, and high-dose ECD(10 mL·kg~(-1)·d~(-1)) by intragastric administration for six weeks on the basis of MCD diet feeding, and the mice could eat and drink freely during the whole experiment. At the end of the experiment, mice were fasted overnight(12 h) and were anesthetized with 20% urethane. Thereafter, the blood and liver tissue were collected. The serum was used to detect the levels of alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransaminase(AST), interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß), interleukin-6(IL-6), interleukin-10(IL-10), and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α). Liver tissue was processed by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining and used for hepatic histological analysis and detection of the expression levels of genes and proteins related to nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/glutathione peroxidase 4(Nrf2/GPX4) pathway by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR) and Western blot analysis, respectively. The results showed that compared with the MCS group, the MCD group showed higher serum ALT and AST levels; the HE staining exhibited fat vacuoles and obvious inflammatory cell infiltration in liver tissue; serum IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were significantly increased, and the serum IL-10 level was significantly decreased. The mRNA expressions of fatty acid synthase(FASN), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1), and IL-1ß in liver tissue were significantly up-regulated, while those of GPX4, Nrf2, and NAD(P)H:quinine oxidoreductase(NQO1) were significantly down-regulated. Compared with the MCD group, the serum ALT and AST levels of ECD_M and ECD_H groups were significantly decreased, and the AST level in the ECD_L group was significantly decreased. The number of fat vacuoles and the degree of inflammatory cell infiltration in liver tissue were improved; serum IL-1ß, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were significantly decreased, but the serum IL-10 level was significantly increased only in the ECD_H group. The mRNA expressions of FASN, MCP-1, and IL-1ß in liver tissue were significantly down-regulated, and those of GPX4 and NQO1 were significantly up-regulated. The mRNA expressions of Nrf2 in ECD_M and ECD_H groups were significantly up-regulated. Western blot results showed that compared with the MCD group, the protein expression levels of Nrf2 and GPX4 in each group were significantly increased after ECD administration, and the protein expression level of FASN was significantly decreased; the protein expression of NQO1 was increased in ECD_M and ECD_H groups. In summary, ECD can reduce hepatic lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, liver inflammation, and liver injury in NASH mice, which may be related to the activation of the Nrf2/GPX4 pathway.

ABSTRACT

The inflammatory response is involved in the progression of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We sought to investigate the relationships of inflammatory indicators including blood cell counts and the ratios of different blood cells counts with the prognosis of aSAH patients. We performed a retrospective study including 140 patients with aSAH and aneurysm surgeries. The relationships of neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, platelets, systemic immune inflammation index (SII), system inflammation response index (SIRI), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio with prognosis were investigated by univariable analysis and multivariable logistic regression model. The patient with Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score<3 was defined as having a good prognosis, while with mRS score ≥3 was defined as having a poor prognosis. Among 140 patients included, there were 108 cases with good prognosis and 32 cases with poor prognosis after follow-up. On the 3rd postoperative day, the neutrophils counts, SIRI level and SII level in cases with poor prognosis were significantly higher than cases with good prognosis, P < .05. After adjusting for baseline differences in Hunt-Hess grade, Glasgow Coma Scale score, combination with intraventricular hemorrhage and maximum diameter of aneurysm, the levels of SIRI (odds ratio = 3.968, 95% CI: 1.432-10.992, P = .008) and SII (odds ratio = 3.313, 95% CI: 1.029-10.665, P = .045) on the 3rd postoperative day could predict poor prognosis. SII and SIRI on the 3rd postoperative day could independently predict the poor prognosis in aSAH. However, the cutoff values for predicting prognosis needs to be validated in larger-sample studies.

Hip fracture, increasing exponentially with age, is osteoporosis's most severe clinical consequence. Intertrochanteric fracture, one of the main types of hip fracture, is associated with higher mortality and morbidity. The current research hotspots lay in improving the treatment effect and optimizing the secondary stability after intertrochanteric fracture surgery. Cortex buttress reduction is a widely accepted method for treating intertrochanteric fracture by allowing the head-neck fragment to slide and rigidly contact the femoral shaft's cortex. Medial cortical support is considered a more effective option in treating young patients. However, osteo-degenerations features, including bone weakness and cortical thickness thinning, affect the performance of cortex support in geriatric intertrochanteric fracture treatment. Literature focusing on the age-specific difference in cortex performance in the fractured hip is scarce. We hypothesized that this osteo-19 degenerative feature affects the performance of cortex support in treating intertrochanteric fractures between the young and the elderly. We established twenty models for the old and the young with intertrochanteric fractures and performed static and dynamic simulations under one-legged stance and walking cycle conditions. The von Mises stress and displacement on the femur, proximal femoral nail anti-rotation (PFNA) implant, fracture plane, and the cutting volume of cancellous bone of the femur were compared. It was observed that defects in the anterior and posterior cortical bone walls significantly increase the stress on the PFNA implant, the displacement of the fracture surface, and cause a greater volume of cancellous bone to be resected. We concluded that ensuring the integrity and alignment of the anterior and posterior cortical bones is essential for elderly patients, and sagittal support is recommended. This finding suggests that the treatment method for intertrochanteric fracture may differ, considering the patient's age difference.
