ABSTRACT

Increasingly, dry conifer forest restoration has focused on reestablishing horizontal and vertical complexity and ecological functions associated with frequent, low-intensity fires that characterize these systems. However, most forest inventory approaches lack the resolution, extent, or spatial explicitness for describing tree-level spatial aggregation and openings that were characteristic of historical forests. Uncrewed aerial system (UAS) structure from motion (SfM) remote sensing has potential for creating spatially explicit forest inventory data. This study evaluates the accuracy of SfM-estimated tree, clump, and stand structural attributes across 11 ponderosa pine-dominated stands treated with four different silvicultural prescriptions. Specifically, UAS-estimated tree height and diameter-at-breast-height (DBH) and stand-level canopy cover, density, and metrics of individual trees, tree clumps, and canopy openings were compared to forest survey data. Overall, tree detection success was high in all stands (F-scores of 0.64 to 0.89), with average F-scores > 0.81 for all size classes except understory trees (< 5.0 m tall). We observed average height and DBH errors of 0.34 m and - 0.04 cm, respectively. The UAS stand density was overestimated by 53 trees ha-1 (27.9%) on average, with most errors associated with understory trees. Focusing on trees > 5.0 m tall, reduced error to an underestimation of 10 trees ha-1 (5.7%). Mean absolute errors of bole basal area, bole quadratic mean diameter, and canopy cover were 11.4%, 16.6%, and 13.8%, respectively. While no differences were found between stem-mapped and UAS-derived metrics of individual trees, clumps of trees, canopy openings, and inter-clump tree characteristics, the UAS method overestimated crown area in two of the five comparisons. Results indicate that in ponderosa pine forests, UAS can reliably describe large- and small-grained forest structures to effectively inform spatially explicit management objectives.

ABSTRACT

Monitoring of tree spatial arrangement is increasingly essential for restoration of dry conifer forests. The presented method was developed for high-density point clouds, like those from unmanned aerial system imagery, to extract and model individual tree location, height, and diameter at breast height (DBH). Extraction of tree locations and heights uses a variable window function searching point cloud-derived canopy height models. Tree DBH is extracted for a subset of point cloud trees using a slice at 1.32-1.42 m and a least-squares circle fitting algorithm. Extracted heights and DBHs are spatially matched and filtered against each tree's expected DBH predicted using a regional National Forest Inventory height to DBH relationship. Values remaining after filtering are used to create a site-specific height to DBH relationship for predicting missing DBH values. Applying the method in a ponderosa pine-dominated forest found that extracted height values exceeded the precision of field height measurement approaches, while the accuracy of extracted and modeled DBH values had a mean error of 0.79 cm.•Leveraging National Forest Inventory to filter DBH values eliminates the need for in situ observations.•Produces tree list for all extractable stems in the point cloud.•Transferable to high-density point clouds in open-canopy forests.

ABSTRACT

The wildland-urban interface (WUI), the area where human development encroaches on undeveloped land, is expanding throughout the western United States resulting in increased wildfire risk to homes and communities. Although census based mapping efforts have provided insights into the pattern of development and expansion of the WUI at regional and national scales, these approaches do not provide sufficient detail for fine-scale fire and emergency management planning, which requires maps of individual building locations. Although fine-scale maps of the WUI have been developed, they are often limited in their spatial extent, have unknown accuracies and biases, and are costly to update over time. In this paper we assess a semi-automated Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach that utilizes 4-band multispectral National Aerial Image Program (NAIP) imagery for the detection of individual buildings within the WUI. We evaluate this approach by comparing the accuracy and overall quality of extracted buildings to a building footprint control dataset. In addition, we assessed the effects of buffer distance, topographic conditions, and building characteristics on the accuracy and quality of building extraction. The overall accuracy and quality of our approach was positively related to buffer distance, with accuracies ranging from 50 to 95% for buffer distances from 0 to 100 m. Our results also indicate that building detection was sensitive to building size, with smaller outbuildings (footprints less than 75 m2) having detection rates below 80% and larger residential buildings having detection rates above 90%. These findings demonstrate that this approach can successfully identify buildings in the WUI in diverse landscapes while achieving high accuracies at buffer distances appropriate for most fire management applications while overcoming cost and time constraints associated with traditional approaches. This study is unique in that it evaluates the ability of an OBIA approach to extract highly detailed data on building locations in a WUI setting.

ABSTRACT

Geofences are virtual boundaries based on geographic coordinates. When combined with global position system (GPS), or more generally global navigation satellite system (GNSS) transmitters, geofences provide a powerful tool for monitoring the location and movements of objects of interest through proximity alarms. However, the accuracy of geofence alarms in GNSS-radio frequency (GNSS-RF) transmitter receiver systems has not been tested. To achieve these goals, a cart with a GNSS-RF locator was run on a straight path in a balanced factorial experiment with three levels of cart speed, three angles of geofence intersection, three receiver distances from the track, and three replicates. Locator speed, receiver distance and geofence intersection angle all affected geofence alarm accuracy in an analysis of variance (p = 0.013, p = 2.58 × 10(-8), and p = 0.0006, respectively), as did all treatment interactions (p < 0.0001). Slower locator speed, acute geofence intersection angle, and closest receiver distance were associated with reduced accuracy of geofence alerts.
