ABSTRACT

The value of reflected (tidal) wave amplitude in the pathogenesis of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) is discussed and main characteristics of elastic properties of arteries (compliance, distensibility, rigidity, pulse wave velocity, and amplitude of reflected wave) are considered. In ISH systolic and pulse blood pressures are associated with augmentation of the reflected wave amplitude. Increased pulse wave velocity characteristic of ISH leads to displacement of reflected wave from diastole to systole. Summation of two waves (primary and reflected) causes elevation of systolic blood pressure. Choice of antihypertensive drugs for the treatment of ISH is determined by their action on pulse wave velocity, delay of reflected wave and arterial compliance. Preferable agents are angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, calcium antagonists, diuretics and beta-blockers with vasodilating properties. In bradycardia with high stroke volume normalization of heart rate can be achieved by M-anticholinergic drugs and theophylline.

ABSTRACT

100 patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis were examined and treated in the therapeutic department of rehabilitation center. Combined treatment including low-energy laser radiation produced good results. Laser therapy has improved bronchial permeability, sensitivity of bronchial beta 2-receptors to sympathomimetics. As a result, their intake was reduced or discontinued. Laser radiation combined well with other non-pharmacological modalities.

ABSTRACT

Component analysis of total phenotypic variance was used to analyze data on 80 pairs of twins aged 3 to 18 years, examined in the Stupino outpatient dental clinic, Moscow oblast. Genotypic and environmental factors are shown to play different roles in the development of abnormalities of teeth, dental arches, and occlusion at different ontogenetic periods of deciduous, mixed, and permanent dentition. Periods when paratypic factors prevailed were revealed. This made it possible to identity periods when prophylaxis and orthodontic treatment are the most advisable.

ABSTRACT

The contribution of hereditary and environmental factors to the formation of maxillodental abnormalities in the ontogenetic aspect was analyzed using a twin model. A total of 80 twin pairs aged 3 to 18 were examined. The results permitted the authors define the age periods favorable for therapeutic and prophylactic measures in children with abnormalities of the teeth, dentition, and occlusion. Effects of sex dimorphism on the parameters of the maxillodental system at various stages of ontogenesis were studied. Sex-specific differences were found to augment with age; all the analyzed parameters in boys were superior to those in girls at the age when sex-specific factors completely exerted their effects on the maxillodental system at the period of permanent teeth occlusion.

ABSTRACT

The author reviews published literature on the use of permanent magnets as an alternative to traditional methods of instrumental treatment in orthodontics. Use of magnetic technology in orthodontics should be further researched and improved.

ABSTRACT

In 70 children with deep prognathic occlusion while in the period of second dentition the correlations were investigated between the angular parameters of teleroentgenograms in a triangular manner: each parameter was related to the two others, and those were compared to each other.

ABSTRACT

The clinical and morbid anatomy data on 295 patients with arterial hypertension were examined. Two hundred patients had moderate hypertension with the diastolic pressure under 110 mm Hg. Of these, 103 patients had received rauwolfia drugs and 13 patients had been given hypothiazide in addition. Eighty patients who died before 1953 had not received any specific hypotensive drugs. Early hypotensive therapy of moderate hypertension was noted to promote a decrease in arterial blood pressure to normal and to raise the mean lifespan by 8 years. Furthermore the number of fatal brain strokes and myocardial infarctions decreased almost 2-fold.

ABSTRACT

It has been established by means of electron and oscillation absorption spectra that the structure of sublimated layers of ethioporphyrin and its metal-derivatives depends on sublimation conditions. When sublimation was performed in a vacuum the molecules were located parallel to the base surface, in the presence of gase--at an angle, near to the right one, interlocation (and hence interaction) of molecules in the layers of different structure conditions the differences in their spectral characteristics and a peculiar anisotropy of layers. The later consists in the difference of optical properties in longitudinal and perpendicular directions to the layer surface.
