ABSTRACT

The present work aims to investigate thermal performance of a solar flat plate collector using water and Cu-MWCNTs nanoparticle-based hybrid nanofluid both experimentally and numerically. X-ray diffraction and FESEM with EDAX mapping were performed to characterize nanoparticles. The experimental setup was developed for thermal performance of FPC varying flow rates (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 LPM), inclination angle (25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, 45°), volume concentration (0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%), and intensity (400 W/m2). The 3D numerical model having similar geometry as of actual flat plate collector was modeled using Fluents 15.0. The SST turbulence model was used to capture the chaotic changes in the velocity, temperature, and pressure fields. The experimental findings revealed 79.74% improvement in instantaneous efficiency at 0.4% vol., 1.5 LPM, 45° inclination angle, and 400 W/m2 intensity. The maximum deviation between the experimental and numerically calculated outlet and inlet temperature difference (ΔT) was 3.5% using a hybrid nanofluid. When numerical data are compared, instantaneous efficiency and heat gain both deviate by 2.8% and 2.9% from experimental values. Because of the numerical simulation analysis, it is possible to observe the temperature and flow pattern in flat plate collectors using nanofluids under a set of operating conditions, which would not be possible without the simulation.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Hyperlipidemia (HL) is a major cause of ischemic heart diseases. The size-limiting effect of ischemic preconditioning (IPC), a cardioprotective phenomenon, is reduced in HL, possibly because of the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP). The objective of this study is to see what effect pretreatment with Inula racemosa Hook root extract (IrA) had on IPC-mediated cardioprotection on HL Wistar rat hearts. An isolated rat heart was mounted on the Langendorff heart array, and then ischemia reperfusion (I/R) and IPC cycles were performed. Atractyloside (Atr) is an MPTP opener. Methods: The animals were divided into ten groups, each consisting of six rats (n = 6), to investigate the modulation of I. racemosa Hook extract on cardioprotection by IPC in HL hearts Sham control, I/R Control, IPC control, I/R + HL, I/R + IrA + HL, IPC + HL, IPC + NS + HL, IPC + IrA+ HL, IPC + Atr + oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, integrity, and hemodynamic parameters are evaluated for each group. Results: The present experimental data show that pretreatment with IrA reduced the LDH, CK-MB, size of myocardial infarction, content of cardiac collagen, and ventricular fibrillation in all groups of HL rat hearts. This pretreatment also reduced the oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Inhibition of MPTP opening by Atr diminished the effect of IrA on IPC-mediated cardioprotection in HL rats. Conclusion: The study findings indicate that pretreatment with IrA e restores IPC-mediated cardioprotection in HL rats by inhibiting the MPTP opening.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: novel corona virus infection has become a public health crisis leading the world to a standstill including dentistry. However, since the dental services cannot be stopped for a long period it is important that dentist be fully prepared before resuming their services. Therefore, the current study was carried out for evaluating knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) along with perceived barriers to practice dentistry during pandemic. METHODS: this cross-sectional study was conducted through an online survey questionnaire on dentists of India. Dentists were enquired for demographics, KAP and perceived barriers regarding practicing dentistry during pandemic. The knowledge was assessed based on 16 items in true or false or multiple choice questions format getting score of 1 or 0. The attitude and practices by 8 items each, on 5-point Likert scale and 4 items perceived barriers were enquired. The differences between the median scores among demographic variables were determined by applying student's t-test and keeping level of significance at below 0.05. RESULTS: out of 500 dentists who were approached through email, a total of 296 dentists returned the questionnaire (response rate, 59.2%) among which 22 questionnaires were incomplete and thus excluded making 274 as final study participants. Overall poor median scores of knowledge and practices were obtained whereas for attitude total median score was good. Median practice scores were significantly higher among female respondents (20(6)). Median knowledge and practice scores were significantly better in study participants with age <40 years (6(4) and 19(5), respectively). CONCLUSION: with the recent claims of authorities that virus is going to stay in world for quite some time it is essential that dentists must be fully prepared before resuming their services and must attain proper awareness to limit the disease spread.

ABSTRACT

Genes involved in the hemostatic mechanism are logical candidate genes for association studies in prothrombotic conditions such as stroke. Since the underlying etiology in pediatric strokes is different than adults, looking for genetic causes would be the logical thing to do in the pediatric stroke population. Fifty-eight Asian-Indian stroke patients below 15 years of age and equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy controls were the subjects for the study. The subjects were screened for 13 polymorphisms and three mutations spread across seven different candidate genes involved in the hemostatic system. Of the 13 polymorphisms and three mutations studied, four polymorphisms, HPA-I, TAFI 147Ala>Thr, methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677 C>T, and MTHFR 1298 A>C, showed significant association with the disease phenotype. MTHFR 677 C>T showed the strongest association and therefore may have a strong predisposing role for pediatric strokes. Gene-gene interaction studies showed a strong interaction between HPA-I and MTHFR 677 C>T polymorphism. The wild type of both these polymorphisms synergistically showed a strong protective effect [p < 0.0001, O.R: 10.06(4.26-23.71)]. Polymorphisms in HPA-I and MTHFR may have important predisposing roles in the development of pediatric stroke.

ABSTRACT

Manifestation of tardive dyskinesia (TD) among schizophrenia subjects on long-term antipsychotic treatment with typical drugs has been a clinical concern. Despite its association with extrapyramidal symptoms, typical drugs are still routinely prescribed globally though marginally superior atypical drugs have long been available. The genetic component in the etiology of TD is well documented. Search for these determinants has led to a few consensus associations of CYP2D6 *10, CYP1A2*1F, DRD2 Taq1A (rs1800497), DRD3 Ser9Gly (rs6280) and MnSOD Ala9Val (rs4880) variants with TD. However, translation of these observations into the clinic has not been achieved so far. This review discusses the salient features of TD etiopathology, current status of TD genetics, interactions between genetic and nongenetic factors, some major drawbacks, challenges and expected focus in TD research over the next decade, with emphasis on pharmacogenetics.
