ABSTRACT

Paddle is one of the racket sports that has grown the most in recent years. However, there are few or very limited studies that address the biotype of this discipline, especially in the elite paddle. The aim was to describe the anthropometric characteristics, body composition and somatotype of an international sample of high level paddle players. 29 subjects national top level (15 male and 14 female) participated in this study. 16 anthropometric variables were evaluated. Differences were found between sexes in the variables weight, height and BMI (p <0.001); in triceps, thigh and leg folds (p <0.001); in the arm, thigh (p <0.001) and leg (p <0.03) perimeters; and in all diameters analysed (p <0.001). Differences were also found between men and women in the endomorphic (p <0.01), mesomorphic (p <0.001) and ectomorphic (p <0.05) components of the somatotype. Male players present a mesomorphic-endomorphic somatotype while female players are preferably endo-mesomorphic. This research provides up-to-date reference data for somatotype in elite paddle players

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Twenty-four patients with post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence were submitted to clinical and urodynamic evaluation. The clinical evaluation analyzed urinary symptoms and included rectal examination of the prostate lodge, neurourologic examination (perineal sensitivity, anal tone, bulbocavernous reflex, voluntary control of anal sphincter). The urodynamic study consisted of flowmetry, cystomanometry, detrusor pressure/micturition flow test and videocystography. An unstable bladder was demonstrated in 62.5% of the cases. Bladder dysfunction was recognized in 75% of the cases. Involvement of the striated periurethral sphincter was demonstrated in no patient. The clinical data did not provide orientation. No relation was observed between the urodynamic data, type of surgery, and amount of prostate removed. The urodynamic data appear to have a prognostic significance.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the electrophysiology of the human internal anal sphincter and two current concepts of sphincter function, simultaneous manometric and electrical recordings were made from circular smooth muscle of the internal anal sphincter in the resting state and during reflexly induced sphincter relaxation. Three groups were studied: seven normal subjects, 25 patients with functional bowel disease, and seven patients with external sphincter paralysis due to spinal cord lesions. In the resting state slow waves of alternating potential (basic electrical rhythm or BER) were recorded in all subjects. Two types of waves were present, a constant sinusoidal pattern or a spindleshaped pattern. Either pattern was consistent for a given individual. Frequency of BER in the internal sphincter was higher than that recorded in any other gastrointestinal muscle. Our findings indicate that the BER recorded from the internal anal sphincter originates in this muscle. This activity may represent a specialized feature of sphincteric muscle since BER cannot be recorded from isolated nonsphincteric circular muscle. Reproduction of the two patterns of BER by an electronic model suggests that BER, as recorded by this technique, results from a summation of a number of electrically active cells in contact with the recording electrodes. Inhibition of BER occurred when sphincter relaxation was reflexly induced by rectal distension. Both inhibition of BER and degree of sphincter relaxation were proportional to the strength of rectal stimulation, suggesting that strength of stimulus determines the number of active cells which are inhibited. The associations of high frequency of BER with high resting pressure, and of inhibition of BER with sphincter relaxation suggests that maintenance of sphincter tone is an active process that is governed by BER.
