ABSTRACT

Evidence for the intermolecular recombination between the RNA genomes of picornaviruses and coronaviruses as well as current models of the mechanisms of these phenomena are reviewed. Biological implications of the recombination between RNA genomes are briefly discussed. Examples of the recombinant analysis of the viral genome functions are given.

ABSTRACT

The nucleotide sequence of the crossover region on genomes of two intertypic (type 3/type 1) poliovirus recombinant, has been determined by the primer extension method. No deletions, insertions or rearrangements have been observed. Identical contiguous sequences, 7 or 11 nucleotides in length, respectively, have been found in two regions of the parental genomes, involved in the recombination.

ABSTRACT

Antibody against intracellular virus-specific proteins was produced by immunization of monkeys with extracts of cells infected with poliovirus of one of the three serotypes. Interactions of homotypic and heterotypic antibodies with labeled intracellular virus-specific proteins were studied. Immune complexes formed at this interaction were adsorbed on the surface of Staphylococcus aureus (strain Cowan I) cells, and the virus-specific proteins contained in these complexes were then analysed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The experimental results indicate the occurrence of identical (or close) antigenic determinants at least in the majority of similar intracellular proteins of polioviruses of the three serotypes.
