ABSTRACT

The spontaneous retrieval deficit (SRD) hypothesis argues that individuals in the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are particularly impaired in spontaneous retrieval, which manifests in reduced mind-wandering. Our main purpose was to provide novel evidence to support the SRD hypothesis by investigating, for the first time, the relationship between mind-wandering and periodontitis, the latter being the risk factor for AD. The second objective was to address the lack of deeper understanding of the relationship between oral health and specific cognitive abilities by investigating whether periodontitis would be primarily associated with memory. Sixty community-dwelling dementia-free older adults completed neuropsychological tests that focused on various cognitive abilities and a computerised task, during which mind-wandering was evaluated. Periodontal health was assessed subjectively, and through an oral examination by a qualified dentist that focused on visible periodontitis-related changes in gingival tissues and the number of periodontitis bacteria. In line with our predictions, objective and subjective symptoms of poorer periodontal health were associated with less mind-wandering, providing further support for the SRD hypothesis. Again in line with predictions, poorer periodontal health was associated with worse episodic memory, with no relationship between periodontitis and the measure targeting various cognitive abilities, from which memory was excluded.

ABSTRACT

Endoprostheses are prone to tribological wear and biological processes that lead to the release of particles, including aluminum nanoparticles (Al NPs). Those particles can diffuse into circulation. However, the toxic effects of NPs on platelets have not been comprehensively analyzed. The aim of our work was to investigate the impact of Al NPs on human platelet function using a novel quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) methodology. Moreover, a suite of assays, including light transmission aggregometry, flow cytometry, optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, were utilized. All Al NPs caused a significant increase in dissipation (D) and frequency (F), indicating platelet aggregation even at the lowest tested concentration (0.5 µg/mL), except for the largest (80 nm) Al NPs. A size-dependent effect on platelet aggregation was observed for the 5-20 nm NPs and the 30-50 nm NPs, with the larger Al NPs causing smaller increases in D and F; however, this was not observed for the 20-30 nm NPs. In conclusion, our study showed that small (5-50 nm) Al NPs caused platelet aggregation, and larger (80 nm) caused a bridging-penetrating effect in entering platelets, resulting in the formation of heterologous platelet-Al NPs structures. Therefore, physicians should consider monitoring NP serum levels and platelet activation indices in patients with orthopedic implants.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Accurate knowledge of greater palatine foramen (GPF) and greater palatine canal (GPC) anatomy is necessary to avoid injury to the greater palatine artery (GPA) when performing a variety of anesthesiologic, dental or surgical procedures. The aim of this paper was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of literature on the anatomy and localization of bony structures associated with the GPA, namely the GPF and GPC. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases. Seventy-five studies were included in the meta-analysis (n = 22,202 subjects). RESULTS: The meta-analysis showed that the GPF is positioned 17.21 mm (95% CI = 16.34-18.09 mm) from the posterior nasal spine, 2.56 mm (95% CI = 1.90-3.22 mm) from the posterior border of the hard palate, 46.24 mm (95% CI = 44.30-48.18 mm) from the anterior nasal spine, 15.22 mm (95% CI = 15.00-15.43 mm) from the midline maxillary suture, 37.32 mm (95% CI = 36.19-38.45 mm) from the incisive foramen, and opposite the third maxillary molar (M3) in 64.9% (58.7-70.7%) of the total population. CONCLUSION: An up-to-date, comprehensive analysis of GPF and GPC clinical anatomy is presented. The results from this evidence-based anatomical study provides a unified set of data to aid clinicians in their practice.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Nausea and vomiting (NV) remain common cancer symptoms and frequent side effects of anticancer therapies despite available antiemetics. They can lead to treatment disruption and discontinuation. NV is an important patient reported outcome in oncology. This study aimed to build an item bank for computer-adaptive testing (CAT) based on NV questions in the European Organisation for Research for Treatment of Cancer, Quality of Life for Cancer Patients (EORTC QLQ-C30) questionnaire and complete the first three phases of development as described in the EORTC Quality of Life Group guidelines. DATA SOURCES: The development followed a standard procedure. The three phases include conceptualization and literature search (phase 1); item classification, selection, formulation and rating, and expert evaluations (phase 2); and patient pretesting (phase 3). The literature search resulted in a preliminary list of 115 items. Following classification, formulation, and rating, 21 candidate items adhered to the QLQ-C30 format. Evaluation by experts (n = 11) from five countries and patients (n = 31) pretesting in Denmark, Poland, and the UK lead to a final list of 20 items. CONCLUSION: The selection, development, and refining of NV items have been described. The nature of this testing ensures an initial CAT item bank that after field testing (phase 4) and psychometric analysis is expected to provide a precise and efficient NV measurement while still being comparable to the original QLQ-C30 scale. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Access to reliable tools that facilitate NV comprehensive assessment is an important issue for nurses caring for patients with cancer. This CAT item bank is meant to support clinical decisions when all phases of testing are completed.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore what methods should be used to determine the minimal important difference (MID) and minimal important change (MIC) in scores for the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Head and Neck Cancer Module, the EORTC QLQ-HN43. METHODS: In an international multi-centre study, patients with head and neck cancer completed the EORTC QLQ-HN43 before the onset of treatment (t1), three months after baseline (t2), and six months after baseline (t3). The methods explored for determining the MID were: (1) group comparisons based on performance status; (2) 0.5 and 0.3 standard deviation and standard error of the mean. The methods examined for the MIC were patients' subjective change ratings and receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curves, predictive modelling, standard deviation, and standard error of the mean. The EORTC QLQ-HN43 Swallowing scale was used to investigate these methods. RESULTS: From 28 hospitals in 18 countries, 503 patients participated. Correlations with the performance status were |r|< 0.4 in 17 out of 19 scales; hence, performance status was regarded as an unsuitable anchor. The ROC approach yielded an implausible MIC and was also discarded. The remaining approaches worked well and delivered MID values ranging from 10 to 14; the MIC for deterioration ranged from 8 to 16 and the MIC for improvement from - 3 to - 14. CONCLUSIONS: For determining MIDs of the remaining scales of the EORTC QLQ-HN43, we will omit comparisons of groups based on the Karnofsky Performance Score. Other external anchors are needed instead. Distribution-based methods worked well and will be applied as a starting strategy for analyses. For the calculation of MICs, subjective change ratings, predictive modelling, and standard-deviation based approaches are suitable methods whereas ROC analyses seem to be inappropriate.

ABSTRACT

Nanoparticles (NPs) are released from orthopedic and neurosurgical prostheses and can interact with a number of blood components once in the bloodstream. Potential toxic effects of Co and Cr NPs on blood platelets have not been thoroughly investigated. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of Co and Cr NPs on platelet function in vitro. The ability of the tested NPs to induce platelet activation and aggregation was measured using light transmission aggregometry, flow cytometry, and quartz crystal balance with dissipation (QCM-D). This was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy, and optical and immunofluorescence microscopy. Perfusion of QCM-D sensor crystals with platelet-rich-plasma in the presence of Co 28 nm, CoO 50 nm, Co2O3 50 nm, Co3O4 30-50nm, Cr 35-45nm, Cr2O3 60 nm NPs (0.5-5.0 µg/mL) resulted in significant changes in frequency and dissipation, indicating that these NPs caused platelet microaggregation. Transmission electron microscopy also revealed that Cr NPs led to platelet swelling and lysis. Our study shows that both Co and Cr NPs affect platelet function in vitro with two distinct mechanisms. While Co NPs result in standard platelet aggregation, Cr NPs cause both platelet aggregation and decreased platelet membrane integrity and lysis. Based on these findings, monitoring serum NP levels and platelet-mediated hemostasis can be advised in patients with metal-on-metal Co-Cr prostheses.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Surgical complications such as hypoparathyroidism (HPT) or vocal cord palsy are seldom assessed when the quality of life (QOL) in thyroid cancer patients is investigated. The aim of this study was to measure the QOL difference in thyroid cancer survivors with and without HPT. METHODS: Participants for this analysis were enrolled in 13 countries from a study that pilot-tested a thyroid cancer-specific QOL instrument. They were included if they had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer at least 9 months previously. QOL was measured using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core (EORTC QLQ-C30) and some items on HPT symptoms (eg, tingling in fingers or toes). HPT status and other clinical data were extracted from the patients' medical charts. Comparisons of QOL domains between patients with and without HPT were performed using Mann-Whitney U test. The occurrence of HPT-related symptoms was compared using chi-square tests. Multiple ordinal regression analysis was performed to evaluate factors that might affect QOL. RESULTS: Eighty-nine patients participated in this study, 17 of whom were considered to have HPT. Patients in the HPT group reported significantly reduced QOL in 9 of the 15 scales of the EORTC QLQ-C30 compared to patients without HPT. Regression analysis showed that HPT was independently negatively associated with various scales of the QLQ-C30. Both groups showed a high prevalence of typical HPT symptoms. CONCLUSION: Thyroid cancer patients with HPT report significantly impaired QOL compared to thyroid cancer survivors without HPT. The assessment of HPT should be considered when measuring QOL in thyroid cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer causes impairment of health-related quality of life (QoL), but little is known about gender aspects in QoL and symptom burden of lung cancer patients. The aim of this study was to investigate gender differences in QoL as assessed by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-C30 and the updated lung cancer module. METHODS: In a prospective, international, cross-cultural, multicenter study that was undertaken to update the lung cancer-specific module EORTC QLQ-LC13, patients filled in the core questionnaire EORTC QLQ-C30 and the updated lung cancer module. Gender differences were calculated for all QoL scores using ANCOVAs that controlled for known and suspected confounders. Comparisons with historic data were drawn. RESULTS: A total of 200 patients (82 female and 118 male, median age 65 years) were recruited. With the exception of coughing (estimated marginal means: women 33.86 and men 43.52, P=0.022) and diarrhea (estimated marginal means: women 26.01 and men 17.93, P=0.038) there were no significant QoL gender differences. Fatigue was the most pronounced symptom in both, men and women, outpacing typical respiratory symptoms. Quite generally, our sample of lung cancer patients showed considerably worse QoL in all scores when compared to EORTC reference data (lung cancer and combined cancer diagnoses, mean differences up to 13.70 and 21.54 score points, respectively) and to a German norm reference sample (up to 35.37 score points). CONCLUSIONS: This study adds to the literature in showing that the typical QoL gender difference effect (women doing worse than men) may not be generalizable across all patient samples.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to analyze the total prevalence, morphologic, and morphometric characteristics of the pterygospinous (PS) bar and its gender and ethnic differences among populations. PS bar is an ossified anatomic structure stretching between the posterior margin of the lateral pterygoid lamina to the angular spine of the undersurface of the sphenoid, with potential clinical implications. There is no consensus in the literature on its prevalence, morphologic, and morphometric characteristics. METHODS: A thorough search of databases was conducted. Data on the prevalence, morphology, i.e., ossification type (complete and incomplete), side, gender, laterality, and morphometrics, of the PS bar were extracted and pooled into a meta-analysis. RESULTS: A total of 35 studies (n = 14,047 subjects) were analyzed. The overall pooled prevalence of a complete PS bar was 4.4% (95% CI 3.7-5.1), while the overall pooled prevalence of an incomplete PS bar was significantly higher (11.6% [95% CI 8.5-15.2]). A complete PS bar was more prevalent among males and was more commonly unilaterally, on the left side. CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of PS bar is quite common. It could be of importance for clinicians who should consider its potential presence when planning surgical approaches to the retropharyngeal and parapharyngeal space.

BACKGROUND: We validated the new European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Head and Neck Module (EORTC QLQ-HN43). METHODS: We enrolled 812 patients with head and neck cancer from 18 countries. Group 1 completed the questionnaire before therapy, and 3 and 6 months later. In group 2 (survivors), we determined test-retest reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's Alpha, the scale structure with confirmatory factor analysis, and discriminant validity with known-group comparisons. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha was >0.70 in 10 of the 12 multi-item scales. All standardized factor loadings exceeded 0.40. The ICC was >0.70 in all but two scales. Differences in scale scores between known-groups were >10 points in 17 of the 19 scales. Sensitivity to change was found to be sufficient in 18 scales. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence supports the reliability and validity of the EORTC QLQ-HN43 as a measure of quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) concerns of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 14-25 years were compared with those of older adults (26-60 years) with cancer. METHODS: AYAs and older adults receiving curative intent treatment or supportive palliative care for cancer were recruited from eight research centres across Europe. Participants used a rating scale to score the relevance and importance of a list of 77 issues covering 10 areas of HRQoL concern: symptoms; activity restrictions; social; emotional; body image; self-appraisals; outlook on life; lifestyle; treatment-related and life beyond treatment. RESULTS: HRQoL issues were reviewed by 33 AYAs and 25 older adults. Several issues were recognised as relevant and important across all age groups: symptoms, emotional impact, outlook on life, lifestyle and treatment-related. A number of issues were more relevant or important to AYAs including interrupted education, greater motivation to achieve academic goals, increased maturity, boredom, fertility and change in living situation. CONCLUSION: While there is overlap in several of the HRQoL concerns across the age span, it is important that HRQoL measures used with AYAs capture the diverse and unique psychosocial aspects of this developmental stage.

The aim of this work was to conduct a radiological micro-CT study and meta-analysis to determine the morphological features of the root canal anatomy of the maxillary molars. The radiological study included micro-CT scans of 110 maxillary first molars and 98 maxillary second molars. To identify articles eligible for inclusion in our meta-analysis, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were search comprehensively. The following data were extracted: study type (cadaveric, intraoperative or imaging), Vertucci types of canal configuration, presence/number of canals, roots, apical foramina, apical deltas, and inter-canal communications. The mesiobuccal root was the most variable with respect to canal configuration, type I being the most common configuration followed by type II and type IV. Type I was the most common canal configuration in the distobuccal and palatal root. Regarding the number of canals in the maxillary first and second molars, one canal was most prevalent in all roots of the three molars, except for the mesiobuccal root of maxillary first molar, in which two canals were most prevalent. The most prevalent number of roots in all maxillary molars was three. Knowledge of endodontic anatomy determines the parameters of root canal treatment and significantly affects the probability of success. The aim of this radiological micro-CT study and meta-analysis was to determine the morphological features of the root canal anatomy of the mandibular molars. The radiological study included micro-CT scans of 108 mandibular first, 120 mandibular second, and 146 mandibular third molars. For our meta-analysis, an extensive search was conducted through PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify articles eligible for inclusion. Data extracted included investigative method (cadaveric, intraoperative, or imaging), Vertucci type of canal configuration, presence/number of canals, roots, apical foramina, apical deltas, and intercanal communications. In the mesial roots of mandibular molars, the most frequent Vertucci type of canal configuration was type IV, except for the mandibular third molar where type I was most common. Type I was most common in the distal root. There were usually two canals in the mesial root and one in the distal root. Two was the most common number of roots, and a third root was most prevalent in Asia. One apical foramen was most common in the distal root and two apical foramina in the mesial root. Intercanal communications were most frequent in the mesial root. Knowledge of the complex anatomy of the mandibular molars can make root canal therapy more likely to succeed. We recommend the use of cone-beam computed tomography before and after endodontic treatment to enable the root anatomy to be accurately described and properly diagnosed, and treatment outcome to be assessed. PURPOSE: In recent years, the assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been recognized as particularly informative to healthcare providers. For adolescents and young adults (AYAs), the impact of a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment is likely to be distinct from other age groups given the unique and complex physical and psychosocial challenges of this developmental phase. The objective of this study was to capture the HRQoL issues described by AYAs with cancer using thematic analysis. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 45 AYAs aged 14-25 years from six countries. RESULTS: The most prevalent cancers presented were leukemia (n = 12) and lymphoma (n = 8). AYAs' descriptive accounts were analyzed and 12 categories identified: Symptoms (i.e., pain, nausea, vomiting) (84% AYAs); activity limitations (education, leisure time activities) (87%); disrupted life plans (29%); social (loss of friends, family life) (91%); emotional (depression, anxiety) (64%); body image (conscious of changed appearance) (36%); self-appraisals (greater maturity, braver) (47%); outlook on life (altered priorities, increased motivation to achieve) (33%); lifestyle (restricted diet, avoidance of infections) (18%), treatment-related (absence of age-appropriate information, treatment burden) (31%); fertility (24%); and financial concerns (13%). CONCLUSIONS: A wide spectrum of both negative and positive issues were described. Several of these issues, such as disrupted life plans and difficulty establishing romantic relationships, are likely to be more common to AYAs with cancer and might not be captured by existing HRQoL measures. Recognition of these issues and finding ways of addressing them should be seen as an essential component of AYA-tailored cancer care.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze the root canal morphology of maxillary third molars (MTMs) using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-eight consecutively-extracted human MTMs were scanned using micro-CT (spatial resolution=13.68µm per pixel). Dedicated software (SkyScan®) was used to create virtual reconstructions and perform 3D-analysis. A range of anatomical features were assessed; externally (root number, length, fusion, curvature, apex), within the pulp chamber (distance between canal orifices, floor thickness) and within the root canal system (root canal number, classification, ramifications, isthmuses, apical constriction). RESULTS: The donor age ranged from 19 to 73 years (mean±SD 32.3±16.5years). MTMs possessed one or three roots, which principally curved buccally/palatally (75.9%), had 1-4 root canals and typically no apical constriction (84.4%). The average external root length was 11.89±1.53mm, while root canal length was 10.18±0.35mm. The root canal diameter 1mm from the apex was 0.37±0.23mm and negatively correlated with donor's age (r=-0.76; p=0.01), while pulp chamber thickness positively correlated with age (r=0.58; p=0.035). Significantly, furcation canals, canal loops and root canal calcifications were sporadic findings. CONCLUSIONS: In some cases the anatomy of MTMs may not be as complicated as previously documented, being similar to the reported anatomy of other maxillary molars. During root canal treatment of MTMs, the frequent deviation of the apical foramen from the radiographic apex should be considered, as should the absence of an apical constriction in the majority of cases. In addition, buccal/palatal root curvature, often undiagnosed radiographically, is the most common root curvature in MTMs.

ABSTRACT

The palatine aponeurosis is a thin, fibrous lamella comprising the extended tendons of the tensor veli palatini muscles, attached to the posterior border and inferior surface of the palatine bone. In dentistry, the relationship between the "vibrating line" and the border of the hard and soft palate has long been discussed. However, to our knowledge, there has been no discussion of the relationship between the palatine aponeurosis and the vibrating line(s). Twenty sides from ten fresh frozen White cadaveric heads (seven males and three females) whose mean age at death was 79 years) were used in this study. The thickness of the mucosa including the submucosal tissue was measured. The maximum length of the palatine aponeurosis on each side and the distance from the posterior nasal spine to the posterior border of the palatine aponeurosis in the midline were also measured. The relationship between the marked borderlines and the posterior border of the palatine bone was observed. The thickness of the mucosa and submucosal tissue on the posterior nasal spine and the maximum length of the palatine aponeurosis were 3.4 mm, and 12.2 mm on right side and 12.8 mm on left, respectively. The length of the palatine aponeurosis in the midline was 4.9 mm. In all specimens, the borderline between the compressible and incompressible parts corresponded to the posterior border of the palatine bone.

PURPOSE: The pterygoalar (PA) bar is a bony bridge resulting from the partial or complete ossification of a PA ligament. The aim of this meta-analysis was to systematically analyze and provide the most comprehensive data on the prevalence, morphology and topographical anatomy of the PA bar. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive search of the major electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, SciELO, BIOSIS, and Web of Science) was conducted in order to identify relevant studies. Studies reporting the prevalence, side of occurrence, gender dimorphism and morphometry of the PA bar were included in the current study. RESULTS: A total of 25 articles (n = 16,168 subjects) were included in the meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of the complete PA bar was 4.4% (95% CI: 3.0-6.0) and of the incomplete was 8.4% (95% CI: 4.6-13.3). The PA bar was most often observed unilaterally, on the left side. Analysis of geographical subgroups revealed considerable differences, with the lowest prevalence rates in Europe for both incomplete and complete PA bars. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the prevalence and anatomical characteristics of the PA bar, caution is recommended while planning or performing transfacial needle approach to the foramen ovale and when considering a differential diagnosis for nerve compression or entrapment syndromes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This validation study was designed to assess the psychometric validity and quality of the Polish translation of the EORTC QLQ-LMC21 questionnaire in Polish colorectal patients suffering with liver metastases. METHODS: Patients with either histopathological or imaging confirmation of colorectal cancer with liver metastases, with a minimum of three months survival, were eligible for this study. These patients completed the Polish version of the EORTC core QLQ-C30, the QLQ-LMC21 module, and a demographic data questionnaire. The questionnaires were completed twice, once before undergoing either hepatectomy (n = 63) or palliative treatment (n = 97) and three months after the primary treatment. Standardized analyses of validity and reliability were performed. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty patients were enrolled in this study with the mean age of the hepatectomy group 64.3 ± 14.1 and 66.1 ± 12.7 for the palliative treatment group. The QLQ-LMC21 exhibited positive internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from 0.72 to 0.90. The multi-trait scaling analysis demonstrated adequate convergent and discriminant validity. Test-retest reliability was undertaken with 40 patients (25%) with the ICCs for each item ranging from 0.64 to 0.88. The hepatectomy group had a significantly greater Karnofsky Performance Score than the palliative treatment group (p.<0.001). Overall there were weak correlations between the two questionnaires which confirm that the QLQ-LMC21 addresses health issues not assessed in the QLQ-C30. CONCLUSION: The Polish version of the QLQ-LMC21 proved to be a valid and reliable questionnaire to use in conjunction with the QLQ-C30 core questionnaire.

ABSTRACT

Este trabajo pretende introducir el área de la comunicación entre el paciente oncológico y los profesionales, y destacar el impacto que tiene en el paciente. Además, se presenta el cuestionario de comunicación de la EORTC. La comunicación entre el paciente y los profesionales es uno de los elementos claves del soporte que se ofrece a dichos pacientes. En dicha comunicación participan un rango importante de profesionales. Hay una necesidad de realizar más investigación sobre la comunicación. Se presentan dos modelos principales de atención al paciente: el Paternalista y el de Atención Centrada en el Paciente con cáncer. Este último lleva asociada la Comunicación Centrada en el Paciente - CCP. Se revisa la relación entre comunicación y otros PRO: Calidad de Vida, información, y Satisfacción con los Cuidados. Existen diferencias culturales en comunicación que pueden estar relacionadas con el modelo de atención al paciente. El Grupo de Calidad de Vida de la Organización Europea para la Investigación y Tratamiento del Cáncer-EORTC está desarrollando una escala de comunicación entre el paciente oncológico y los profesionales. La mayoría del contenido de dicho cuestionario se centra en las conductas de los profesionales. Los aspectos culturales tienen un papel fundamental en el desarrollo del instrumento. El cuestionario se basa en el modelo de Comunicación Centrada en el Paciente - CCP. Se presenta el cuestionario EORTC QLQ-COMU26, que consta de seis escalas y cuatro ítems individuales. Se describen las tres primeras fases que se han dado en su creación. En la actualidad su funcionamiento psicométrico se está valorando en un estudio internacional (AU)


The aims of the present work are to introduce to the field of communication between the cancer patient and the professionals, to remark the positive influence communication may have on the patient, and to present the EORTC communication questionnaire. Communication between patient and professional is a key element in the support that is offered to cancer patients. It is important to consider different professionals communicate with cancer patients. There is a need of research in communication between patients and professionals. Two main models of patient care are presented: Paternalistic and Patient-Centered Cancer Care. Patient-Centered Care includes Patient- Centered Communication - PCC. The relation between communication and other PROs - Quality of Life, Information and Satisfaction with Care - is presented. There are cross-cultural differences in communication that could be related to the model of patient care. The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Group is developing a questionnaire to assess communication between cancer patient and the professionals. This Communication questionnaire mainly assesses professionals’ behaviors. Cultural aspects have a key role in the development of the EORTC questionnaire. This instrument is based on the Patient- Centered Communication - PCC model. The EORTC QLQ-COMU26 is presented. It includes six scales and four individual items. The three phases of the questionnaire development process are described. At the present moment the EORTC QLQ-COMU26 is being field-tested in a larger international study (phase IV), to ensure it is an appropriate and psychometrically valid instrument (AU)

OBJECTIVE: Zuckerkandl's tubercle (ZT), when present, is an anatomical landmark by which surrounding structures such as the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) can be identified intraoperatively. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and anatomical characteristics of Zuckerkandl's tubercle by combining cadaveric dissection with a meta-analysis. METHODS: Through October 2016, an extensive search of PubMed, CNKI, ScienceDirect, EMBASE, BIOSIS, SciELO, and Web of Science was completed. Extracted data, along with the findings from our cadaveric dissections, were pooled into a meta-analysis to assess the prevalence and size of ZT and its relationship to the RLN. RESULTS: The pooled prevalence estimate of a ZT was 70.2% in the general population, 65.0% of which were considered Grade 0 tubercles (<1.0cm) and 35.0% Grade 1 (≥1.0cm). The RLN ran posteromedially to the ZT in 82.7% of cases, laterally to it in 8.7%, and on top of it in 8.6% of hemilarynges. CONCLUSION: RLN palsy is a common postoperative complication and cause for litigation following neck surgery. The ZT is a common component of the thyroid gland and with proper knowledge, surgeons can use it to reliably and quickly identify the RLN during operative procedures.
