ABSTRACT

A periodic grating with an integer number of periods is fabricated at the resist-coated wall of a cylinder by exposing a circularly symmetrical planar high index phase mask to a cylindrical wave. This extends the spatial coherence features easily achievable in a planar 2D space to the 3D space of cylindrical waves and elements.

ABSTRACT

The resonant reflection of a free-space beam from a slab waveguide grating is rendered high bandwidth and angularly robust by using a bimodal high index waveguide. A deep double-sided corrugation gives rise to the coalescence of the resonant reflection peaks resulting in a top-hat reflection spectrum. A low-cost waveguide technology based on solar cell amorphous silicon is demonstrated in the near infrared in a polarizer application.

ABSTRACT

The sensitivity of grating-coupled Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) on metallic surface has been exploited to investigate the correlation between ripples formation under ultrashort laser exposure and SPPs generation conditions. Systematic examination of coupling of single ultrashort laser pulse on gratings with appropriate periods ranging from 440 nm to 800 nm has been performed. Our approach reveals that a surface plasmon is excited only for an appropriate grating period, the nickel sample exhibits fine ripples pattern, evidencing the plasmonic nature of ripples generation. We propose a systematic investigation supported by a comprehensive study on the obtained modulation of such a coupling efficiency by means of a phenomenological Drude-Lorentz model which captures possible optical properties modification under femtosecond irradiation.

ABSTRACT

A monolithic double-grating phase mask comprising three short-pitch grating sections of spatial frequencies k(1) and k(2) collocated at one side of a substrate produces a large-period interferogram without higher harmonics to print in a photoresist film a latent grating of small spatial frequency equal to twice k(2)-k(1). When incorporated in a write-on-the-fly scheme, the elements permit the fabrication of unlimitedly long gratings.

ABSTRACT

The experimental demonstration and characterization is made of the plasmon-mediated resonant transmission through an embedded undulated continuous thin metal film under normal incidence. 1D undulations are shown to enable a spatially resolved polarisation filtering whereas 2D undulations lead to spatially resolved, polarization independent transmission. Whereas the needed submicron microstructure lends itself in principle to CD-like low-cost mass replication by means of injection moulding and embossing, the present paper demonstrates the expected transmission effects on experimental models based on metal-coated photoresist gratings. The spectral and angular dependence in the neighbourhood of resonance are investigated and the question of the excess losses exhibited by surface plasmons is discussed.

ABSTRACT

An output coupler comprising a resonant grating submirror monolithically associated with a standard multilayer submirror polarizes the emission of a Nd:YAG microchip laser linearly over its full emission bandwidth by intra-mirror destructive interference for the undesired polarization. A polarization extinction ratio of more than 25 dB is obtained up to 6.1microJ pulse energy. This passively Q-switched laser performance is almost identical to that of a gratingless non-polarized microchip laser. The design and fabrication of the resonant grating mirror are described.

ABSTRACT

More than 60% overall coupling efficiency is achieved in the demonstrator of an optical interconnect comprising an input grating coupler, a multimode slab waveguide section and an output grating coupler. The grating coupling strength is enhanced by means of a leaky mode resonance. The efficiency of the resonant grating coupler compares favourably with the performancs reported on mirror inserts.

ABSTRACT

A resonant diffraction grating comprising a mirror, a dielectric layer and a high index corrugation at the layer-air interface is shown to exhibit off-Littrow the record diffraction efficiency of 99% in the -1st reflected order at 1064 nm wavelength thanks to the excitation of a leaky mode of the layer. Such high figure is obtained by a grating 5 to 10 times shallower than in current attempts to realize high efficiency all-dielectric gratings.

ABSTRACT

A new type of translation-rotation encoder that makes use of two identical transparent dielectric gratings lighted in a -1-order Littrow mount is proposed. The correct choice of the wavelength-to-groove-spacing ratio produces only two transmitted beams, which interfere with the highest possible visibility in a large range of experimental conditions. Thus this mounting permits high-accuracy encoders to be produced by the use of cheap photoresist or plastic gratings and opens the way to industrial applications in high-precision mechanics, information processing, etc.
