ABSTRACT

Background: The Gurltia paralysans nematode was initially described in Chile and for many years it was believed that thedisease caused by this parasite was restricted to this country. However, in Argentina, Uruguay and more recently in Brazil, among other countries, cases of Gurltiosis have been described in both domestic and wild cats. This disease is chronic anddebilitating due to the progressive paralysis developed. This study aimed to describe the clinical, epidemiological and pathological aspects of G. paralysans infection in domestic cats of the Agreste region of the state of Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil.Case: Clinical, epidemiological and pathological aspects of G. paralysans infection in domestic cats in the rural area oftwo Agreste municipalities in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, are described. Seven farms were visited, in which 11 maleand female affected felines were evaluated. Among these, euthanasia was performed in four cases, at the owners requestand due to the advanced stage of the disease. Clinical signs began with ataxia of the pelvic limbs and evolved to jumpingdifficulty, lateral falls, muscle atrophy, pelvic limb scarring, and paralysis at the most severe stage of the disease, whichdeveloped in a one-year period, approximately. According to the owners, the affected cats died between six months andone year after the initial clinical signs. At necropsy, there were segments of the spinal cord with extensive reddish areasin the dura, between T7 and S2, corresponding to varices. These were characterized by numerous congestive, dilatedand tortuous blood vessels observed in the dorsal plane, but more pronounced in the ventral plane of the meninges. Inthe bladder, multifocal areas of hemorrhage were observed. Histologically, vascular lesions in veins and venules of theleptomeninges were characterized by venous varices with thrombosis, fibrosis and intravascular parasites associated withmoderate...(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (CMT), members including M. bovis. The sanitary inspection in slaughterhouses has a great importance on public health for the removal of contaminated meat with pathological lesions. Cattle slaughtered in the abattoir of Garanhuns were subjected to macroscopic, histological, bacteriological, and molecular analyses. Lung inspection revealed gross lesions suggestive of tuberculosis. The characterization of tuberculous granulomas was performed by histopathology and hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining. The identification of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) was performed on smears with fresh material and histological staining using Ziehl-Neelsen stain. Bacteriological diagnosis was carried out using Stonebrink and Lowenstein-Jensen media, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed from the DNA extracted from colonies for the identification of Mycobacterium spp. We found that 1% (32/3,.180) of the collected lungs showed lesions suggestive of tuberculosis. Histopathological analysis revealed that 65.62% (21/32) samples had granulomatous pneumonia. AFB was detected in 46.88% (15/32) smears and 4.16% (1/24) histological sections, as analyzed by Ziehl-Neelsen staining. Moreover, 68.75% (22/32) samples showed bacterial growth and molecular identification 90% (18/20) of the samples were positive...(AU)

ABSTRACT

Liver and lymph nodes injuries characterized by clusters of foamy macrophages, some of them containing birefringent crystals, were observed in cattle fed on Brachiaria brizantha hay. The cattle were from an experimental group poisoned with Senecio brasiliensis known to cause hepatic fibrosis and hepatocyte megalocytosis. One of the animals developed photosensitivity but the exact cause wasn't determined since both plants were fed. The foamy macrophages were present from the 30th d of feeding. Early appearance of these lesions may be particular to the animal specie used or due to the presence of both toxic plants.

ABSTRACT

As principais lesões ocorreram no fígado.

To study the effects of the ingestion of Crotalaria spectabilis seeds, fourteen pigs were alloted in 5 groups. Four groups (A-D) consisted each of three pigs and the other (Group E) of two pigs. With the exception of those from Group A, which served as control, pigs were fed a ration containing 0.3 and 0.5 percent (groups B and C) and 1 percent (Groups D and E) of ground seeds of C. spectabilis for 32 (group D), 44 (group E), and 120 (groups B and C) days. One pig from Group D and two pigs from Group B died at 8, 70, and 137 days after the beginning of the experiment; the remaining 11 pigs were euthanatized at periods varying from 52 to 159 days from the beginning of the experiment. Ten of the 11 treated pigs had loss of apetite and poor growth rate. Depression, localized loss of hair, and respiratory distress were other observed clinical signs. Main pathological changes occurred in the liver. They were acute in one case and consisted of accentuation of the lobular pattern; due to centrilobular to massive hepatic necrosis. The remaining 11 treated pigs had chronic hepatic lesions, which included firmness, thickening of the capsule and fibrous adhesions between lobes and between hepatic capsule and adjacent structures. Histologically there was capsular, interlobar, interlobular, and intralobular fibrosis, hepatomegalocytosis and proliferation of bile ducts. In two case there was bilestasis and, in one pig, nodular regeneration was observed. The lungs of 4 pigs were reddened and firm. Histologically there was thickenning of interalveolar and interlobular septa by edema, fibrosis, cell infiltration and type II pneumocytes proliferation. The kidneys were grossly unremarkable. Histologically there was megalocytosis of the tubular epithelium and of the cells of the glomerular tuft. Hialinization of the glomerular tuft was also observed. Mild to moderate cavitary edema (ascites, hydrothorax and hydropericardium) was observed in 6 pigs. Microscopic...
