ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to compare the acute effect of a static- vs dynamic-based stretching warm-up on standing long jump (SLJ) performance in primary schoolchildren. The sample was composed of 76 schoolchildren, 43 girls and 33 boys, aged 9-10 years old from three fourth-grade classes of Primary Education. The three groups were cluster-randomly assigned to the control (CG), static (SG) or dynamic (DG) groups. All the schoolchildren performed a standardized warm-up consisting of mobility exercises (five minutes), jogging (five minutes) and the SLJ test. Afterwards the CG schoolchildren received jump theory (eight minutes), the SG performed static stretching (eight minutes) and the DG performed dynamic-bounces stretching (eight minutes). Afterwards, all of them performed the SLJ test again. The results of the one-way ANOVA (F 2,73 = 34.184; p < 0.001; η2p = 0.484), followed by the pairwise comparisons with the Bonferroni adjustment, showed that the DG students (M Δ = 11.07, SE = 1.42) made a significant statistical improvement in their SJL levels compared with the CG (M Δ = -3.00, SE = 1.89; p < 0.001, d = 1.51) and SG students (M Δ = -1.85, SE = 0.67; p < 0.001, d = 1.38). However, statistically significant differences between the CG and SG students were not found (p > 0.05, d = 0.12). The dynamic-bouncing stretch as a final part of a warm-up improves explosive strength performance in primary schoolchildren, and seems to be a good option before carrying out explosive strength activities of the lower body.

ABSTRACT

A sugar solution measurement system was developed based on the dielectric properties of the sucrose molecule. An ac conductivity and tan δ study as a function of the frequency was performed to find the suitable frequency range for the measuring system. The results indicate that it is possible to obtain a better response of the sensor using the frequencies as the maxima peak in tan δ appears. Developed setup for sucrose solution was appropriate to measure in a 0.15 to 1 g/mL range with an experimental error of about 3%. The proposed system improves the measurement time over some other methods.

ABSTRACT

The apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (APOE4) and family history of dementia (FH) are well-known risk factors for the development of sporadic Alzheimer's disease. We assessed the effects of these risk factors on gray matter (GM) volume in 295 cognitively healthy middle-aged community-dwelling subjects. Voxel-based morphometry was used to study GM volume differences between high- and low-risk subjects, based on APOE4 carriership (n = 74), first-degree FH (n = 228), or both (n = 62). No significant results were found using a corrected p value. Using a more lenient threshold (p < 0.001 and minimum cluster size of 100 voxels), APOE4 carriers had reduced GM in the striatum compared to noncarriers. Subjects with FH had reduced GM in right precuneus compared to subjects without FH. Maternal and paternal FH provided similar atrophy patterns. APOE4 carriers with FH had GM reductions in bilateral insula compared to subjects with neither APOE4 nor FH. We conclude that a family history of dementia and APOE4 carriership are both associated with regional GM decreases in cognitively healthy middle-aged subjects, with differential effects on brain regions typically affected in Alzheimer's disease.

ABSTRACT

Zinc porphyrin dimers and trimers, in which the porphyrins are connected via a ruthenium metal core, exhibit large third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive indices. These properties are a result of the presence of multiple porphyrins, which lead to an extension of the π-conjugated system and the octupolar effect.

ABSTRACT

Self-assembled stacks of trimeric manganese porphyrins exhibit high activity in the photocatalytic epoxidation of stilbene using O2 as the oxidant. The supramolecular structure of the catalyst leads to increased stability of the system and enhances the stereoselectivity of the reaction.

ABSTRACT

The work presented here is part of a larger study to identify novel technologies and biomarkers for early Alzheimer disease (AD) detection and it focuses on evaluating the suitability of a new approach for early AD diagnosis by non-invasive methods. The purpose is to examine in a pilot study the potential of applying intelligent algorithms to speech features obtained from suspected patients in order to contribute to the improvement of diagnosis of AD and its degree of severity. In this sense, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have been used for the automatic classification of the two classes (AD and control subjects). Two human issues have been analyzed for feature selection: Spontaneous Speech and Emotional Response. Not only linear features but also non-linear ones, such as Fractal Dimension, have been explored. The approach is non invasive, low cost and without any side effects. Obtained experimental results were very satisfactory and promising for early diagnosis and classification of AD patients.

ABSTRACT

This study establishes a correlation between exposure and clinical alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. Different dosages were applied, from the accepted safe dosage up to a significant increase dosage. The study was carried out under the laboratory animal center conditions at Universidad of Boyacá (Colombia). Due that ammonium perchlorate is one of the most used compounds as pesticide in Boyacá department this type of studies are extremely important. Using enzyme immunoassay in micro-plate (Accubind Elisa Microwells TSH and Kit Accubind Elisa Microwells T4L ) and following clinical analysis alterations in the hormonal axis were found which could be be indicative of a possible high risk in the future for individuals who handle this substance.

ABSTRACT

Rh(III)-TsDPEN, an immobilized analog of the well-known [Cp*Rh(bpy)(H(2)O)](2+) was evaluated as a heterogeneous, recyclable regeneration catalyst for reduced oxidoreductase cofactors [NAD(P)H]. Repeated use of this catalyst was established and the catalytic properties were initially investigated. Apparently, Rh(III)-TsDPEN is prone to severe diffusion limitations, necessitating further developments. Overall, a promising concept for chemoenzymatic redox catalysis is proposed, which may overcome some of the current limitations such as catalyst cost and incompatibility of Rh with some biocatalysts.

ABSTRACT

Several molecular systems for direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) have recently been developed. The GenoQuick MTB assay (GQ-MTB) used in this study detected 82 of the 96 (85.4%) samples with MTBC, including 50 of 64 (78.1%) samples with negative acid-fast bacillus smears. Fifteen samples containing nontuberculous mycobacteria were also studied: 13 were GQ-MTB negative, one was positive, and one was indeterminate. GQ-MTB showed good effectiveness for the direct detection of MTBC from clinical samples.

ABSTRACT

Sixty-four of 85 (75.3%) smear-negative respiratory (n = 78) and nonrespiratory (n = 7) samples with positive cultures of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) were detected by the GeneXpert system using the Xpert MTB/RIF assay (GX). In addition, GX found rpoB mutations in all six of the rifampin-resistant strains detected. The test was negative in 20 culture-negative and 20 nontuberculous culture-positive samples (100% specificity). GX offers high potential for the diagnosis of tuberculosis due to its capacity for direct detection of MTC, its rapidity, and its simplicity.

ABSTRACT

We report observations of albino individuals in three species of Peruvian birds, Great Grebe (Podiceps major), Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus) and Bar-winged Cinclodes (Cinclodes fuscus). These were all three mostly white partial albinos, apparently adult birds that showed normal behavior among normal conspecific individuals. Survival after several months was confirmed for the Peruvian Pelican and the Bar-winged Cinclodes. Since published information on albinism in Peruvian birds is very scarce, a revision was made and records for nine other species were compiled and are also presented.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To evaluate the effect of a whole formula diet on nutritional and cognitive status in Alzheimer's disease patients. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to two interventions: a whole formula diet based on lyophilised foods (Treatment Group, n=24) or nutritional advice (Control Group, n=29). Energy intake, body weight, biochemistry, Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Pfeiffer's tests were determined at baseline and at 3 months of treatment. RESULTS: No differences were observed between groups at baseline. Energy intake tended to increase in the Treatment Group and to decrease in the Control Group, although differences were not significant. The improvement in MNA and Pfeiffer test scores was not significantly different between groups. Body weight increased by 2.06+/-1.9 kg in the Treatment Group and by 0.32+/-3.04 kg in the Control Group (P=0.007). The increases in albumin (P=0.007), haemoglobin (P=0.002) and serum ferritin (P=0.009) were higher in the Treatment Group than in controls. A similar rate of serious adverse events (hospitalisation or death) was observed in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of this whole formula has a positive impact on nutritional status. The great diversity in textures and tastes enable these formulations to be administered to a wide range of patients with or without liquid dysphagia.

ABSTRACT
