ABSTRACT

In mountain forests, tree regeneration is limited by increasingly frequent frosts with increasing elevation. We investigated the effects of exposure to freezing temperature on early life stages of two native trees of different elevational origin in a seasonally dry mountain forest. We hypothesized that the negative effects of freezing exposure on performance of early life stages increases as freezing temperature decreases, and that frost resistance increases in plants of high elevational origin. We collected seeds of two tree species (Kageneckia lanceolata and Lithraea molleoides) from populations located at different elevations and grew seedlings and saplings in a greenhouse. Dry seeds, imbibed seeds and 1-month-old seedlings were exposed to seven temperature treatments ranging from 4 °C to -20 °C, while 12-month-old saplings were exposed to four temperature treatments from -8 °C to -20 °C. After freezing exposure in a climate chamber, we monitored seed germination and seedling and sapling survival. Germination of K. lanceolata decreased with decreasing temperature only for imbibed seeds from mid- and high elevations, whereas germination of L. molleoides slightly increased with decreasing temperature only for imbibed seeds from high elevations. For both species, seedling survival decreased with decreasing temperature. For K. lanceolata, the negative effects of freezing temperatures were weaker as elevational origin of seeds increased, whereas L. molleoides showed the opposite pattern. For both species, saplings only survived at the mildest applied freezing temperature (-8 °C). We conclude that effects of climatic variation associated with elevation depend on the study species and life stage. The observed patterns could be caused by maternal effects, which are absent at the sapling stage. Moreover, temperatures below -8 °C can limit recruitment since partial mortality of seedlings and saplings occurred at such values.

ABSTRACT

Tb3+ doped GeO2-Na2O glasses have been fabricated by conventional melt quenching technique using 0.3, 1, 3, and 5 %mol of terbium ions. The optical properties were studied by means of steady-state photoluminescence (excitation and emission spectra), and emission decay time. Under excitation of 355 nm and as the concentration of dopant increases, the glasses show an enhancement of the emission intensity from 5D4 level accompanied by a decrease on the emission intensity from 5D3 level. This phenomenon can be attributed to an energy transfer process that occurs through cross-relaxation mechanisms between Tb3+ ions. The aim of this study is to report an experimental technique to study the cross-relaxation of 5D3 level decay curves of Tb3+ ions under simultaneous temporal and spatial pulsed excitation using UV and visible light (355 nm + 488 nm), allowing to limit the occurrence of cross-relaxation mechanisms and increase luminescent efficiency. Upon simultaneous UV + Vis excitation, the emission from 5D3 level in enhanced, as the energy of the 488 nm pulse is increased. Additionally, the energy transfer efficiency between Tb3+ ions was analyzed with the Inokuti-Hirayama (IH) model, as function of the excitation pulse energy at 488 nm, keeping fixed the energy of the 355 nm pulse, determining a dipole-dipole interaction as the dominant interaction mechanism.

ABSTRACT

Plasmonic photothermal therapy (PPTT), as an increasingly studied treatment alternative, has been widely regarded mostly as a surface tissue treatment choice. Although some techniques have been implemented for interstitial tumors, these involve some grade of invasiveness, as the outer skin is usually broken to introduce light-delivering optical fibers or even catheters. In this work, we present a potential non-invasive strategy using the stereotactic approach, long employed in radiosurgery, by converging multiple near infrared laser beams for PPTT in tissue-equivalent optical phantoms that enclose small gel spheres and simulate interstitial tissue impregnated with plasmonic nanoparticles. The real-time in-depth monitoring of temperature increase is realized by an infrared camera face-on mounted over the phantom. Our results show that a significant reduction in the surface heating can be achieved with this configuration while remarkably increasing the interstitial reach of PPTT, assuring a ∼6∘C temperature increase for the simulated tumors at 10 mm depth and ∼4∘C at 15 mm depth and opening up new possibilities for future clinical applications.

ABSTRACT

A 6-months-old male mixed-breed dog was admitted to the veterinary hospital with lameness in the right pelvic limb, proprioceptive ataxia, and suspected spinal cord injury in the lumbosacral segment. Upon palpation, firm nodules were noted on the bony surface of the thoracic and pelvic limbs, ribs, vertebrae, and tail. The radiographic study showed nodules of low radiopacity with well-defined limits and smooth contours, one of which was overlapping the fifth lumbar vertebra. Given the clinical presentation indicative of spinal cord injury, the animal was subjected to hemilaminectomy for nodular resection. Histopathological examination of the biopsy enabled the diagnosis of osteochondroma. The clinical follow up after surgery showed improvement in walking, despite persistent monoparesis in the right pelvic limb. The radiographic study in association with clinical and histopathological exams allowed the diagnosis and monitoring of the lesions.

ABSTRACT

We present a new method to calculate the complex refractive index of spherical scatterers in a novel optical phantom developed by using homemade monodisperse silica nanospheres embedded into a polyester resin matrix and an ethanol-water mixture for applications in diffuse imaging. The spherical geometry of these nanoparticles makes them suitable for direct comparison between the values of the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients (µa and µs', respectively) obtained by the diffusion approximation solution to the transport equation from scattering measurements and those obtained by the Mie solution to Maxwell's equations. The values of the optical properties can be obtained by measuring, using an ultrafast detector, the time-resolved intensity distribution profiles of diffuse light transmitted through a thick slab of the silica nanosphere phantom, and by fitting them to the time-dependent diffusion approximation solution to the transport equation. These values can also be obtained by Mie solutions for spherical particles when their physical properties and size are known. By using scanning electron microscopy, we measured the size of these nanospheres, and the numerical results of µa and µs' can then be inferred by calculating the absorption and scattering efficiencies. Then we propose a numerical interval for the imaginary part of the complex refractive index of SiO2 nanospheres, ns, which is estimated by fixing the fitted values of µa and µs', using the known value of the real part of ns, and finding the corresponding value of Im(ns) that matches the optical parameters obtained by both methods finding values close to those reported for silica glass. This opens the possibility of producing optical phantoms with scattering and absorption properties that can be predicted and designed from precise knowledge of the physical characteristics of their constituents from a microscopic point of view.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to calculate the collapsibility index (CI) in a group of 15 healthy adult mixed breed cats via right hepatic intercostal ultrasound view. The minimal and the maximal diameters of the caudal vena cava (CVC) were obtained during inspiration and expiration, respectively, then CI was calculated. The mean diameter of the CVC was 0.5cm. The mean CI was 28±3% and CI was not significantly associated with gender. As in human medicine, there is a growing need for less invasive monitoring in small animal practice. The CI enables the assessment of estimated volemia without the need for a central venous catheter. This is the first reported study investigating CI in cats.(AU)

ABSTRACT

A 3 year old female feline of mixed breed was sent to the diagnostic imaging sector under suspicion of bleeding due to ovariohysterectomy. An abdominal ultrasonography was performed to confirm the initial suspicion. However, no signs of bleeding were found, instead it was observed that the left renal silhouette had two pelvises and was elongated and larger than normal. The right kidney was not found. Excretory urography was requested to evaluate the condition of the ureters. The final diagnosis was crossed renal ectopia with fusion in an asymptomatic cat with no changes in renal function.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Portosystemic shunt (PSS) is an anomalous vascular connection between the portal venous system and the systemic circulation. These deviations connect the main portal vein (PV) or some portal branches to the vena cava (VC) or, less commonly, to the azygos vein (AV). The purpose of this case report was to describe the diagnosis of PSS in a dog classified as porto-azygos. This diagnosis is considered uncommon compared to other portosystemic shunts using ultrasonography and portography. The subject was a male dog, Yorkshire, 8 months old, presented neurological signs characterized by head press, ataxia, tremors and episodes of temporary blindness and deafness. Ultrasonographic examination revealed a dilated and curved anomalous vessel with approximately 0.6cm of diameter and turbulent flow seen through pulsed and color Doppler, and segmental dilation of the azygos vein. The portography revealed enhancement by iodinated contrast in the jejunal vein, the portal vein and an anomalous vessel flowing towards the azygos vein in the craniodorsal region of the abdomen. The PSS was surgically corrected with an ameroid constrictor. Ultrasonography and portography were effective at detecting and characterizing the portoazygos shunt despite some limitations.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of HA/ ßTCP on rapid absorption granules in rabbit radiography, histology, and bone densitometry. Thirty - five male rabbits of the New Zealand breed were used and a critical defect was performed on the right and left radios. The animals were distributed in GI, autologous graft and GII HA / ßTCP in rapidly absorbed granules. Radiographic, histological, and densitometry evaluations were performed before surgery, then after eight, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days. A significant difference was found when comparing the bone mineral density obtained over the study time. Formation of vascular network between the bioceramic pores was observed by the first evaluation time, (eight days). Primary bone tissue and trabeculae were observed from preexisting bone tissue after 30 days of implantation. At 60 days, the presence of bone matrix was observed from the preexisting bone segments, characterizing the centripetal bone formation. The micro-macroporous nanocomposite HA / ßTCP of rapidly absorbing granules do not cause microscopic changes indicative of rejection, allows invasion, cell multiplication, and promotes bone regeneration, constituting an appropriate implant for filling of critical bone failures.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Pneumocephalus is defined as the presence of air in any of the intracranial compartments. Its most frequent causes are trauma and cranial surgery. Clinical signs occur as a result of increased intracranial pressure and vary with the location and extent of the lesion. A case involving a seven-month-old female Saint Bernard, who suffered cranial trauma caused by a bite to the face at ten days of age and had presented with seizures and localized pain four months previously is reported. A computed tomography scan of the skull revealed a nasocephalic mass with low contrast enhancement, bone lysis, and hypodensity (-940 Hounsfield units) of the lateral and third ventricles, indicating intraventricular pneumocephalus. During surgery, a fragment of the mass was collected for histopathological examination, which demonstrated the presence of multifocal areas of necrosis. The computed tomography (CT) is a reliable method for the characterization of intracranial lesions and diagnosis of pneumocephalus, whose occurrence must be considered in pathological processes in which there is increased intracranial pressure and in patients undergoing certain surgical procedures and anesthetic specific, and CT is indicated as a monitoring tool for these patients.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

We evaluated 160 hip joint radiographs of 40 dogs of different large breeds (25 females and 15 males) from the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The radiographs of each dog were obtained at two different stages: stage 1 (mean 7.23 months) and stage 2 (mean 14.25). The conventional radiographic method (CRM) and the radiographic distraction method (RDM) were used, carried out in both stages. CRM measured the Norberg angle (NA), the angle of inclination (AI) and evaluated the presence of degenerative joint disease (DJD). The MRD was performed to establish the distraction index (DI). The aims were to evaluate the presence of the Morgan line and other signs of DJD and correlate them with the degree of canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and also check if the DI greater than 0.3 (first stage) was associated with the presence of ML (second stage). It was found that DI, AI and changes of femoral neck and the formation of osteophytes were associated with the presence of ML. It was observed that if the DI is greater than 0.3 at the first stage, the chance of a positive outcome of ML in the second stage increases by 7.2 times. Thus, 49 joints showed DI > 0.3 at the first stage, in which 31 (63.3 %) presented ML at the second stage. Of the 31 animals that showed DI ≤ 0.3 at first, six (19.4%) had LM at the second stage. There has been a significant association between the presence of ML and the degree of CHD. The more severe the CHD, the higher the percentage of positive ML results. Thus, among the 24 (60 %) animals that showed ML, 11 (45.83 %) were classified as severe dysplastics, 5 (20.83%) as moderate and 8 (33.33 %) as mild. None of the animals classified as normal or borderline presented ML. Among the 8 animals classified as mild dysplastics, 5 showed only ML as DJD.(AU)

No primeiro momento, 49 articulações apresentaram ID > 0,3. Destas, 31 (63,3%) apresentaram LM no segundo momento.

ABSTRACT

In this study, 139 radiographs of the Rottweiller breed dog, 44 males and 95 females were evaluated. Radiographs were classified by the degree of hip dysplasia, and we measured the angle of inclination, Norberg angle, the cortical index and percentage of coverage of the femoral head on both sides. The aim of this study was to evaluate that parameters based on gender and age of animals correlating them with the incidence and severity of hip dysplasia. In dysplastic dogs the mean Norberg angle was 100.09 ± 7.86 °, the mean percent coverage of the femoral head was 41.50 ± 8.59%, the mean femoral cortical index was 0.33 ± 0.04, and the femoral angle mean was 153.06 ± 9.81 °. Higher inclination angles were associated with smaller angles of Norberg and lowest percentage of coverage of the femoral head. In this study gender, cortical index and angle of inclination did not show any association with the DCF.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the racial difference of radiographic measurements of canine lumbosacral joints.20 German Shepherd, 20 Rottweiler and 20 Doberman dogs were used in the study. The lumbosacral joint was assessed radiographically with the hind limbs in neutral position (N), in ventral flexion (VF) and dorsal extension (DE). We measured the angles between the L7 and S1 articular processes (PA), between the distal L7 and S1 proximal epiphysis (EPIF), the lumbosacral angle (LS), range of motion (ROM) of these angles, the intersection point of the lines that form these angles and their ROM. The results show that the height of the spinal canal in L7 is lower in German Shepherds (9.5mm) than in Dobermans (10mm) and Rottweilers (10.5 mm). The EPIF-DE was higher in the German Shepherd (38.03°). The PA-N was lower in German Shepherd (15.98 °). The LS-VF was lower in the Doberman (170.01°), and LS did not differ statistically between German Shepherd (179.17°) and Rottweiler (176.61°). The ROM of the LS and EPIF angles were greater in the German Shepherd dogs. It was concluded that the German Shepherd dogs have radiographic measurements that lead to greater instability of the lumbosacral joint.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of conventional and distraction radiographic methods in adult German Shepherd dogs. Sixteen animals were tested, eleven females and eight males, with a mean age of 4.8 years. All dogs were clinically evaluated to detect locomotor and/or nervous system changes that could affect normal locomotion, but clinical hip dysplasia (HD) alterations were excluded. Two techniques were used for radiographic evaluation of hip joints, the Conventional Radiographic Method (CRM), adopted by Fédération Cynologique Internationale and the Distraction Radiographic Method (DRM). 62.5% of the evaluated animals were classified as having some degree of HD. The correlation between CRM and DRM was moderate. When DRM was used alone, it was considered an ineffective method, with 75% sensitivity and 44% specificity. From this study, it can be concluded that CRM is an effective diagnostic method for hip dysplasia when compared to DRM in adult German Shepherd dogs...

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to monitor the consolidation of the femur after osteosynthesis with a bridge plate associated with the intramedullary pin using scintigraphy. We used seven New Zealand breed male rabbits, at 4 months of age, with a mean weight of 3.5 kg. We performed a three-phase bone scintigraphy with technetium-labeled methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) before and after surgery, and 20, 50 and 90 days postoperatively. The activity index (AI) was calculated by dividing the average number of uptake counts in the region of the osteotomy by the average number of counts in the corresponding region in the contralateral limb. Radiography was performed before surgery, after surgery, and 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. We found a direct relationship between the activity index and progress of bone scintigraphy in the evaluation sequence over the period of observation. Scintigraphy allows monitoring of bone metabolism and measurement of vascularization and/or bone or tissue perfusion. The images obtained in the blood pool and static phases are the most appropriate for assessing bone metabolism in the context of this study. The bridge plate associated with the intramedullary pin promotes osteosynthesis with sufficient stability to allow bone consolidation.

A cintilografia óssea trifásica permite acompanhar o metabolismo ósseo, avaliar e mensurar a vascularização e perfusão tecidual.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this work was to evaluate Lithothamnium calcareum suplementation in the consolidation of experimental osteotomy in rabbits, through radiographic and histology examinations. Ten male New Zealand white rabbits, 4-5 months of age with an average body mass of 2.5kg, had surgically induced mid-tibial osteotomies, fixed with two intramedullary pins. The animals were randomly divided into two experimental groups (A and B). Group A received a diet containing 0.75% of L. calcareum, and group B served as control without further treatment of the osteotomy fixation. Radiographs were done every 15 days until the end of the experiment and histology was performed at day 60. Radiographs show consolidation in all cases. Histologically there was bone consolidation in all animals in group B (control), and 75% in group A. From the results we can conclude that, although there was clinical and radiographic bone consolidation in all cases after 60 days, the control group proved to be better histologically, showing that a healthy organism needs no aid to repair bone. Further research should be conducted to assess the effects of mineral supplementation on animals with nutritional deficiencies.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to establish the normal echocardiographic parameters in M-mode for Yorkshire Terrier dogs. Thirty clinically normal dogs with mean weight of 2.42±0.64kg and ages varying from one to six years old were studied. The left atrial diameter, the aortic diameter, the left ventricular internal dimension at end - diastole and end - systole, end - diastolic and end - systolic interventricular septal thickness, and end - diastolic and end - systolic left ventricular posterior wall thickness had correlation with body weight. The other M - mode variables showed no linear correlations with body weight, sex or age. The echocardiographic values found in this study can be used as reference for this breed.
