ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the predictive performance and compatibility of CHA2DS2-VASc-HS scores and Framingham risk scores (FRS) in patients with coronary angiography. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis study enrolled 98 patients with ischemic heart disease who were indicated for invasive coronary angiography. Sensitivity and specificity were determined using the cut-off values of the ROC curve. The Gensini score was used to evaluate the correlation. RESULTS: The cut-off value of the Congestive heart failure, hypertension, age 75 years, diabetes mellitus, stroke, vascular disease, age 65-74 years, sex category - hyperlipidemia, smoking (CHA2DS2-VASc-HS) score was 2.5, and for FRS, it was 14.5. The area under the curve (95% CI) for the CHA2DS2-VASc-HS score and FRS were 0.76 (0.66, 0.85) and 0.80 (0.71, 0.85), respectively. For every 1-point increase in the CHA2DS2-VASc-HS score, the Gensini score increased by 0.44 (r = 0.56; R2 = 0.19, Beta = 0.44, p < 0.01), and the number of stenosis coronary branches increased by 0.55 (r = 0.56; R2 = 0.30, Beta = 0.55, p < 0.01). For every 10-point increase in FRS, the Gensini score increased by 3.8 (r = 0.57; R2 = 0.14, Beta = 0.38, p < 0.01), and the number of stenosis coronary branches increased by 5 (r = 0.53; R2 = 0.25, Beta = 0.5, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated a high predictive performance of coronary artery injury using the CHA2DS2-VASc-HS score and Framingham risk scores. These scores could be applied in predicting ischemic heart disease in non-symptomatic cases where invasive coronary angiography is not indicated.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To develop a novel feed supplement for shrimp using pigmented spore-forming bacterial strains isolated from their gastrointestinal tracts. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eight pigmented Bacillus strains were selected from the isolates based on high production of heat-stable spores, typical UV-Vis spectra of produced carotenoids (400-550 nm), and free radical scavenging activity of their extracts. Of the eight strains, the red-orange pigmented Bacillus aquimaris SH6 was selected because it showed the highest abundance in shrimp guts (70% population). Whiteleg shrimp (n = 30 per group) fed with SH6 spores, at >3 × 106  CFU g-1  pellet for 4 weeks had redder colour (score of 21-23 vs 20-22), 2·7-fold higher astaxanthin level (0·69 vs 0·25 µg g-1 shrimp), 34% higher weight gain (7·18 vs 5·32 g shrimp-1 ), and 85% higher phenoloxidase activity (OD490  = 0·265 vs 0·143) than shrimp in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The result supports the potential use of B. aquimaris SH6 as a feed supplement for promoting the colourization and weight gain, and for enhancing innate immunity of whiteleg shrimp. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study demonstrates that carotenoids produced by B. aquimaris SH6 can be successfully absorbed and converted to astaxanthin in whiteleg shrimp.

ABSTRACT

A solid acid catalyst consisted of sulfonic groups covalently bound to an inorganic matrice was developed to dehydrate 2,3-butanediol into methyl ethyl ketone. Rate constant and apparent activation energy of the dehydration reaction were determined. The decay course of the catalyst was a two-stage curve. The catalyst was deactivated more rapidly in the first stage than in the second stage. The strategy of maintaining constant degree of dehydration was employed to lengthen the lifetime of catalyst. Treatment of the 2,3-butanediol containing fermentation broth with activated carbon greatly facilitated the subsequent dehydration reaction.

ABSTRACT

Removal and modification of southern red oak hemicelluloses and lignin in a 0.05%(w/v) sulfuric acid hydrolysis were investigated. The hydrolysis profile was to raise the reaction from room temperature to 150 degrees C for in 38 min and to extend the hydrolysis at 150 degrees C for 1 h. At the end of the hydrolysis, 25.5% of red oak components were dissolved, of which 58% was xylose and 17% lignin. As the hydrolysis proceeded from room temperature to 150 degrees C, a part of red oak xylan was removed to yield an oligomer fraction having maximal yield and average molecular weight of 3460 at 150 degrees C. This fraction and the bulk xylan extracted during the first 30 min at 150 degrees C were further degraded to give a lower molecular weight oligomer fraction, of which the yield and average molecular weight (2610) were highest at the end of the bulk removal of xylan. Red oak lignin, syringyl and guaiacyl units in particular, was increasingly removed with the progress of the hydrolysis. Lignin derivatives and a part of red oak extractives soluble in the hydrolysate were identified.
