ABSTRACT

Air pollution and infectious diseases (such as the COVID-19 pandemic) have attracted considerable attention from governments and scientists worldwide to find the best solutions to address these issues. In this study, a new simultaneous antibacterial and particulate matter (PM) filtering Ag/graphene-integrated non-woven polypropylene textile was fabricated by simply immersing the textile into a Ag/graphene-containing solution. The Ag/graphene nanocomposite was prepared by reducing Ag ions on the surface of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) using the leaf extract. The prepared Ag/graphene textile was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and contact angle measurements. The results showed excellent integration of the Ag/GNP nanocomposite into the non-woven polypropylene textile matrix. The prepared textile exhibited superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of 152°. The maximum PM removal percentage of the Ag/GNP-integrated textile was determined to be 98.5% at an Ag/GNP content of 1.5% w/w and a silicon adhesive of 1% w/w. The Ag/GNP textile exhibited high antibacterial activity toward Escherichia coli with no sign of bacteria on the surface. Remarkably, the as-prepared Ag/GNP textile was highly durable and stable and could be reused many times after washing.

ABSTRACT

A new species, Boholina reducta sp. nov., was found in a brackish pool within an anchialine cave in Tra Ban Island in Bai Tu Long Bay, north Vietnam. The new species is clearly distinguished from all the six species currently known in the genus Boholina by the following unique characteristics: reduction of the septum between gonopores; narrow and pointed rostrum; basal segment of mandibular palp armed with three setae; maxillule without seta on the basal exite, and exopod with 11 setae; second and third endopodal segments of the maxilliped bearing three setae each; exopod of male right leg 5 2-segmented, with two strong and one vestigial spines on the outer margin of the distal segment; and last exopodal segment of female leg 5 bearing only one spine on the outer margin. We provide a description of the new species, along with detailed illustrations and scanning electron microscopy photographs. The identification key to Boholina species is updated as well. This is the first record of the genus Boholina from Vietnam.

ABSTRACT

Nannodiaptomus phongnhaensis Dang & Ho, 2001, an endemic stygobiotic diaptomid from Vietnam and the type species of the genus Nannodiaptomus Dang & Ho, 2001, is redescribed on the basis of a new material from its type locality: Hang Phong Nha Cave, Quang Binh province, central Vietnam. We also designated a neotype, because the type material has been lost. The diagnosis of the genus is amended, based on the description of the neotype. The taxonomic position of the genus in the subfamily Speodiaptominae is proposed, and its relationships with other genera of this subfamily are discussed. A new cave-dwelling species Nannodiaptomus haii sp. nov., from a cave near the type locality of N. phongnhaensis, is also described and illustrated. The new species differs from the type species of the genus, among other things, by the structure of male's left swimming leg 5, where the inner margin of the apical process and the sub-terminal seta on the swimming leg 5 Exp-2 have small serrated membranes, but these bear 3-4 distinct denticular protrusions in N. phongnhaensis.
