ABSTRACT

Nowadays, image steganography has an important role in hiding information in advanced applications, such as medical image communication, confidential communication and secret data storing, protection of data alteration, access control system for digital content distribution and media database systems. In these applications, one of the most important aspects is to hide information in a cover image whithout suffering any alteration. Currently, all existing approaches used to hide a secret message in a cover image produce some level of distortion in this image. Although these levels of distortion present acceptable PSNR values, this causes minimal visual degradation that can be detected by steganalysis techniques. In this work, we propose a steganographic method based on a genetic algorithm to improve the PSNR level reduction. To achieve this aim, the proposed algorithm requires a private key composed of two values. The first value serves as a seed to generate the random values required on the genetic algorithm, and the second value represents the sequence of bit locations of the secret medical image within the cover image. At least the seed must be shared by a secure communication channel. The results demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits higher capacity in terms of PNSR level compared with existing works.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, human action recognition has become an essential task in health care and other fields. During the last decade, several authors have developed algorithms for human activity detection and recognition by exploiting at the maximum the high-performance computing devices to improve the quality and efficiency of their results. However, in real-time and practical human action recognition applications, the simulation of these algorithms exceed the capacity of current computer systems by considering several factors, such as camera movement, complex scene and occlusion. One potential solution to decrease the computational complexity in the human action detection and recognition can be found in the nature of the human visual perception. Specifically, this process is called selective visual attention. Inspired by this neural phenomena, we propose for the first time a spiking neural P system for efficient feature extraction from human motion. Specifically, we propose this neural structure to carry out a pre-processing stage since many studies have revealed that an analysis of visual information of the human brain proceeds in a sequence of operations, in which each one is applied to a specific location or locations. In this way, this specialized processing have allowed to focus the recognition of the objects in a simpler manner. To create a compact and high speed spiking neural P system, we use their cutting-edge variants, such as rules on the synapses, communication on request and astrocyte-like control. Our results have demonstrated that the use of the proposed neural P system increases significantly the performance of low-computational complexity neural classifiers up to more 97% in the human action recognition.

Understanding the responses that some plants exhibit to acclimatize and thrive in different light environments can serve as a guideline to optimize their production or establishment. Morpho-physiological changes in Crescentia alata and Enterolobium cyclocarpum were examined in response to varying light levels: 25%, 35%, 55% and 70% of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of total solar radiation. One-month-old seedlings were subjected to the light treatments; subsequently, the effects on morphology, photosynthetic capacity, nutrient status, non-structural carbohydrate reserves (NSC) and growth were evaluated in three-month-old seedlings. Light levels affected several morpho-physiological parameters. C. alata responded better to higher light levels and E. cyclocarpum to lower levels. Particularly, C. alata with 70% PPFD increased its size in height and diameter, and accumulated more biomass in leaves, stems, and roots; it also exhibited higher net assimilation rates, improved nitrogen and phosphorus status and growth. In contrast, E. cyclocarpum with 25% PPFD increased aboveground biomass, nitrogen levels and NSC in leaves. Both species show morpho-physiological changes that determine their ability to acclimatize to different light conditions. This serves as a basis for designing better management strategies in the nursery or field by defining the light environments conducive to a proper functioning.

Abstract Introduction: H. perotensis is a plant with a high potential for ecological restoration because it yields thousands of seeds and grows under low levels of rain, poor soils and contrasting temperatures. However, little is known of the seed mass maturity (high seed germination, low seed fresh weight and low seed moisture content) in this species. Objective: Assess seed germination in the laboratory of H. perotensis during seed development and along the floral stalk (infructescence) in two sites one in rocky location and another near a lake. The hypothesis was that there is a time after flowering in which seeds have highest germination and fresh weight and that the apical, centre and base of the infructescence are different in seed germination and fresh weight in both sites. Methods: Capsules were collected in two sites one in rocky land (Frijol Colorado, Perote, Veracruz) and another near one lake (Alchichica, Puebla), in the months of August, September and November 2016 and January 2017. A repeated measure design (RMD) was used to analyze the effects of infructescence section on seed weight, moisture content and seed germination (41, 87, 152 and 215 days after flowering). Each evaluation time comprised five replicates, each one with 15 seeds. Results: Difference in seed germination, seed weight and moisture content between sections of the infructescence was not significant. However, significant differences were found not only between first and last sample dates, but mainly between first and second dates. Eighty-seven days after flower pollination seed moisture content was lower than 20 % and up to 80 % of seed germinated in both sites of sampling. Conclusions: In this study it was found that the moisture content of H. perotensis seed can be used as an indicator of the physiological maturity of the seed and it is also related to germination of the seed.


Resumen Introducción: H. perotensis es una planta con un alto potencial para la restauración ecológica debido a que produce miles de semillas y crece con niveles bajos de lluvia, suelos pobres y temperaturas contrastantes. Sin embargo, el desarrollo de la madurez de las semillas (germinación alta, baja humedad y bajo peso fresco de semilla) en esta especie es muy poco conocido. Objetivo: Evaluar la germinación en el laboratorio de las semillas de H. perotensis, durante el desarrollo de la semilla y a lo largo del tallo floral (infrutescencia) en dos sitios; uno en un área rocosa y otro cerca de un lago. La hipótesis fue que hay un tiempo después de la floración, en el que las semillas presentan la mayor germinación y menor peso fresco, y que las secciones apical, central y base de la infrutescencia, la germinación y el peso fresco de la semilla son diferentes en los dos sitios. Métodos: se recolectaron las cápsulas en dos sitios uno en un área rocosa (Frijol Colorado, Perote, Veracruz) y otro cerca de un lago (Alchichica, Puebla), en los meses de Agosto, Septiembre y Noviembre de 2016 y Enero de 2017. Se usó un diseño de medidas repetidas (DMR) para analizar los efectos de la sección de la infrutescencia sobre el peso fresco de la semilla, el contenido de humedad y la germinación de la semilla (41, 87, 152 y 215 días, después de la floración). Cada tiempo de evaluación comprendió cinco réplicas y 15 semillas. Resultados: La diferencia en la germinación de la semilla, el peso de la semilla y el contenido de humedad entre las secciones de la infrutescencia no fue significativa. Sin embargo, se encontraron diferencias significativas entre las fechas de muestreo inicial y final, pero sobre todo entre la primera y la segunda fecha. Asimismo, ochenta y siete días después de la polinización de las flores, el contenido de humedad de las semillas fue inferior al 20 % y superior al 80 % en la germinación de las semillas en ambos sitios de muestreo. Conclusiones: en este estudio se encontró que el contenido de humedad de la semilla de H. perotensis, puede usarse como un indicador de la madurez fisiológica de la semilla y también está relacionado con la germinación de la semilla.

ABSTRACT

Components of the GH/IGF1 endocrine axis regulate growth and reproductive traits in cattle. The pro-melanin-concentrating hormone (PMCH) gene located within chromosome 5 belongs to this axis. Objective herein was to evaluate PMCH single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as molecular markers associated with age at first calving, calving interval, and age at second calving in Angus and Brangus beef heifers raised in desert conditions. Five SNPs within the PMCH gene were included in the study. Three of these SNPs had minor allele frequency > 10% and only one SNP did not deviate from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. A genotype to phenotype association analyses was performed using a mixed-effects model which included phenotype as the response variable, SNP genotype, breed, year of birth and age of dam as fixed terms, and sire as a random effect. Genotypes from the SNP rs135033882 were found to be associated (P < 0.05) with all evaluated fertility traits, and the term breed resulted as a significant source of variation only for age at second calving. The allele A was the favorable allele because it decreased the age at first calving 98.6 days, the calving interval 85.3 days, and the age at second calving 183.1 days, in Angus and Brangus heifers. In conclusion, we proposed a SNP within the PMCH gene as a potential candidate marker associated with reproductive performance in Angus and Brangus beef heifers raised in a desert climate.

ABSTRACT

The physiology and biochemistry of young Opuntia spp. cladodes relate with their Crassulacean acid metabolism, which extends over the day-night cycle in four phases, is species-dependent and is affected by water availability. This study aimed to assess the interaction among species, time-of-day, and the soil water potential (ΨW) on biochemical and physiological characteristics of cladodes of Opuntia species. Three-week-old cladodes were harvested at 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. from plants with or without irrigation for 30 d (-0.17 and -5.72 MPa soil ΨW), from O. albicarpa, O. ficus-indica, O. hyptiacantha, O. megacantha, and O. streptacantha. The experimental design was a factorial 5 x 2 x 2 (species, sampling time and soil ΨW). The experimental unit was one cladode per plant, and six repetitions were evaluated. Total acids, glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch, total phenolics, free amino acids, and soluble proteins concentrations were evaluated, as well as acid invertase and neutral invertase activities. The interaction among species x soil ΨW and species x time of the day was significant (P ≤ 0.05) in all variables evaluated. An exception was the species x soil ΨW on starch concentration (P = 0.1827). The biochemical and physiological characteristics of Opuntia cladodes were modified by the time of the day and soil ΨW interaction, but most of the characteristics were positively or inversely affected depending on the species, frequently displaying a descending trend following O. streptacantha, O. hyptiacantha, O. megacantha, O. albicarpa and O. ficus-indica. The total acids, glucose, fructose, starch, soluble proteins, and free amino acids concentrations revealed that domestication significantly modifies C and N metabolism in Opuntia.

ABSTRACT

Technological and analytical advances to study evolutionary biology, ecology, and conservation of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) are realized through molecular approaches including DNA barcoding. We characterized the usefulness of COI DNA barcodes in green turtles in Mexico to better understand genetic divergence and other genetic parameters of this species. We analyzed 63 sequences, including 25 from green turtle field specimens collected from the Gulf of Mexico and from the Mexican Pacific and 38 already present in the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD). A total of 13 haplotypes were identified with four novel haplotypes from the Pacific Ocean and three novel haplotypes from the Atlantic Ocean. Intraspecific distance values among COI gene sequences by two different models were 0.01, demonstrating that there is not a subdivision for green turtle species. Otherwise, the interspecific distance interval ranged from 0.07 to 0.13, supporting a clear subdivision among all sea turtle species. Haplotype and total nucleotide diversity values of the COI gene reflect a medium genetic diversity average. Green turtles of the Mexican Pacific showed common haplotypes to some Australian and Chinese turtles, but different from the haplotypes of the Mexican Atlantic. COI analysis revealed new haplotypes and confirmed that DNA barcodes were useful for evaluation of the population diversity of green turtles in Mexico.

ABSTRACT

The xylem of Cactaceae is a complex system with different types of cells whose main function is to conduct and store water, mostly during the development of primary xylem, which has vessel elements and wide-band tracheids. The anatomy of primary xylem of Cactaceae has been widely studied, but little is known about its chemical composition. The aim of this study was to determine the structural chemical composition of the primary xylem of Cactaceae and to compare it with the anatomy in the group. Seeds from eight cacti species were used, representing the Pereskioideae, Opuntioideae, and Cactoideae subfamilies. Seeds were germinated and grown for 8 months. Subsequently, only the stem of the seedling was selected, dried, milled, and processed following the TAPPI T-222 om-02 norm; lignin was quantified using the Klason method and cellulose with the Kurshner-Höffer method. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the percentage of syringyl and guaiacyl in lignin was calculated. Seedlings of each species were fixed, sectioned, and stained for their anatomical description and fluorescence microscopy analysis for the topochemistry of the primary xylem. The results showed that there were significant differences between species (p < 0.05), except in the hemicelluloses. Through a principal component analysis, it was found that the amount of extractive-free stem and hot water-soluble extractives were the variables that separated the species, followed by cellulose and hemicelluloses since the seedlings developed mainly parenchyma cells and the conductive tissue showed vessel elements and wide-band tracheids, both with annular and helical thickenings in secondary walls. The type of lignin with the highest percentage was guaiacyl-type, which is accumulated mainly in the vessels, providing rigidity. Whereas in the wide-band tracheids from metaxylem, syringyl lignin accumulated in the secondary walls S2 and S3, which permits an efficient flow of water and gives the plant the ability to endure difficult conditions during seedling development. Only one species can be considered to have paedomorphosis since the conductive elements had a similar chemistry in primary and secondary xylem.

ABSTRACT

Plants, as sessile organisms, adapt to different stressful conditions, such as drought, salinity, extreme temperatures, and nutrient deficiency, via plastic developmental and growth responses. Depending on the intensity and the developmental phase in which it is imposed, a stress condition may lead to a broad range of responses at the morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. Transcription factors are key components of regulatory networks that integrate environmental cues and concert responses at the cellular level, including those that imply a stressful condition. Despite the fact that several studies have started to identify various members of the MADS-box gene family as important molecular components involved in different types of stress responses, we still lack an integrated view of their role in these processes. In this review, we analyze the function and regulation of MADS-box gene family members in response to drought, salt, cold, heat, and oxidative stress conditions in different developmental processes of several plants. In addition, we suggest that MADS-box genes are key components of gene regulatory networks involved in plant responses to stress and plant developmental plasticity in response to seasonal changes in environmental conditions.

Resumen Introducción: El trabajo se establece como un resultado de investigación en el cual se realiza una revisión bibliográfica sobre la temática planteada. Objetivo: Caracterizar los materiales de clase que utiliza dos universidades una pública y una privad para la identificación de tipos de tecnologías. Materiales y Método: Se considera que el estudio es no-experimental y se espera la participaron todos los estudiantes matriculados en el primer semestre 2017, se cumple con los criterios de inclusión: a) edad mínima de 18 años; b) matriculados en sus respectivas universidades; La muestra aleatoria piloto contenía 98 participantes de un total de 2150 estudiantes de las dos universidades. Resultados: Mediante la aplicación de varias técnicas estadísticas como el análisis: Factorial Exploratorio, alfa de Cronbach clásico. Se analizó el comportamiento de las respuestas al cuestionario de 21 ítems, que tiene un formato de escala tipo Likert, definidas en 4 dimensiones. Se comprobó la inexistencia de diferencias estadísticamente significativas, en tres ítems del estudio. Conclusiones: Se ha analizado la validez y fiabilidad de dicho cuestionario a través de un análisis factorial de componentes principales con rotación Varimax. Se concluye que bastaría con introducir adaptaciones en la relación de dimensiones propuestas en este cuestionario que tuviera en cuenta las especificidades de cada material de estudio.


Abstract Introduction: The work is established as a result of research in which a bibliographic review is made on the subject matter proposed. Objective: Characterize the class materials used by two universities, one public and one private for the identification of types of technologies. Materials and Method: The study is considered non-experimental and it is expected that all students enrolled in the first semester of 2017 will participate, complying with the inclusion criteria: a) minimum age of 18; b) enrolled in their respective universities; The pilot random sample contained 98 participants out of a total of 2150 students from the two universities. Results: Through the application of several statistical techniques such as the analysis: Exploratory Factorial, classic Cronbach's alpha. The behavior of the responses to the 21-item questionnaire, which has a Likert-type scale format, was analyzed, defined in 4 dimensions. The absence of statistically significant differences was verified in three items of the study. Conclusions: The validity and reliability of this questionnaire was analyzed through a factorial analysis of principal components with Varimax rotation. It is concluded that it would be enough to introduce adaptations in the list of dimensions proposed in this questionnaire that took into account the specificities of each study material.

Abstract Background: The present article aims to measure the extent to which the physical and recreational needs of elderly persons in the communities of Posorja and Puna are being met. Nowadays, it is known that physical activity is beneficial for the elderly, as it helps to diminish illness and all kinds of diseases. Method: The population in this study is comprised on 378 elderly persons between 65 and 90 years of age: 200 belong to the community of Posorja and 178, to the community of Puna in Guayas Province. The tools used for this research include, among others, the ADL Test (Activities of Daily Living), which evaluates the degree of self-care and mobility; the Lawton and Brody Scale, which is an appropriate instrument to evaluate the level of independence and skills; and the MMT (Mini Mental Test), which evaluates cognitive functions such as memory, language, praxis and attention. They all are essential to detecting and diagnosing Alzheimer´s disease. Results: Various statistical techniques were used to obtain the results, such as descriptive analysis, contingency tables and main components. Conclusions: The population between 65 and 90 years of age was analyzed and it accounted for 35.9% of the total population back in 2010, which means there was a variation. Nowadays, it represents 56.6% of the obtained sample. This generational group refers to the elderly, who should be favored by public policies that are intended to improve health programs, generate recreational areas, and create senior care centers. Generally, the demographic dynamics of Posorja show a structured pyramid, with an expanding population, a large amount of young people and adults who contribute to the economic dynamics and productivity of the area. The questionnaire could be adapted and contain the specifications required to suit the true dimensions of this population.


Resumen Antecedentes: este artículo tiene como propósito medir el grado en que se satisfacen las necesidades físicas y recreativas de los adultos mayores en las comunidades de Posorja y Puna. Hoy en día, se sabe que la actividad física es beneficiosa para los ancianos, ya que ayuda para disminuir dolencias y todo tipo de enfermedades. Método: La población en este estudio está compuesta por 378 personas mayores entre 65 y 90 años de edad: 200 pertenecen a la comunidad de Posorja y 178 a la comunidad de Puna en la provincia de Guayas. Las herramientas utilizadas para esta investigación se incluyen, entre otros, la Prueba ADL (Actividades de la vida diaria), que evalúa el grado de autocuidado y movilidad; la Escala de Lawton y Brody, que es un instrumento apropiado para evaluar el nivel de independencia y habilidades; y la MMT (Mini prueba mental), que evalúa las funciones cognitivas, como la memoria, el lenguaje, la praxis y la atención. Todos son esenciales para detectar y diagnosticar la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Resultados: Se utilizaron diversas técnicas estadísticas para obtener los resultados, como el análisis descriptivo, tablas de contingencia y componentes principales. Conclusiones: Se analizó la población entre 65 y 90 años de edad que representó el 35.9% de la población total en 2010, lo que significa que hubo una variación. Hoy en día, representa el 56.6% de la muestra obtenida. Este grupo generacional se refiere a las personas mayores, que deberían ser favorecidos por las políticas públicas que se pretenden para mejorar los programas de salud, generar áreas recreativas y crear centros de cuidado para adultos mayores. En general, la dinámica demográfica de Posorja muestra una pirámide estructurada, con una población en expansión, una gran cantidad de jóvenes y adultos que contribuyen a la dinámica económica y productividad del área. El cuestionario podría modificarse y contener las especificaciones requeridas para adaptarse a las verdaderas dimensiones de esta población.


Resumo Contexto: O presente artigo visa analisar em que medida as necessidades físicas e recreacionais dos idosos das comunidades de Posorja e Puna, no Equador, estão sendo atendidas. Atualmente, sabe-se que a atividade física é benéfica para os idosos, já que ajuda a diminuir enfermidades e todos os tipos de doenças. Metodologia: Neste estudo, a população é composta por 378 pessoas idosas com idades entre 65 e 90 anos - 200 pertencem à comunidade de Posorja e 178 à comunidade de Puna, na província de Gayas. As ferramentas utilizadas nesta pesquisa incluem, entre outras, o Teste ADL (Activities of Daily Living), que avalia o grau de autocuidado e mobilidade; a Escala de Lawton e Brody, que é um instrumento apropriado para avaliar o nível de independência e as habilidades; e o MEEM (Miniexame do Estado Mental), que avalia funções cognitivas, como a memória, a linguagem, a práxis e a atenção. Todas elas são essenciais para detectar e diagnosticar a Doença de Alzheimer. Resultados: Várias técnicas estatísticas foram usadas para obter os resultados, tais como análise descritiva, tabelas de contingência e principais componentes. Conclusões: A população entre 65 e 90 anos foi analisada e somava 35,9% da população total em 2010, o que significa que houve uma variação. Atualmente, essa população representa 56,6% da amostra obtida. Esse grupo geracional se refere aos idosos, que deveriam ser favorecidos por políticas públicas que visam melhorar programas de saúde, gerar espaços recreacionais e abrir centros especializados no cuidado de idosos. Em geral, as dinâmicas demográficas de Posorja mostram uma pirâmide estruturada com uma população em expansão, uma grande quantidade de jovens e adultos que contribuem para as dinâmicas econômicas e para a produtividade da região. O questionário poderia ser adaptado para conter as especificações requeridas para adequar-se às verdadeiras dimensões dessa população.

The aims of this paper are to develop our understanding of the ways by which soil water deficits influence early wheat root growth responses, particularly how seminal roots respond to soil drying and the extent to which information on differences in soil water content are conveyed to the shoot and their impact on shoot behaviour. To achieve this, wheat seedlings have been grown, individually for around 25 days after germination in segmented soil columns within vertical plastic compartments. Roots were exposed to different soil volumetric moisture contents (SVMC) within the two compartments. Experiments where the soil in the lower compartment was allowed to dry to different extents, while the upper was maintained close to field capacity, showed that wheat seedlings allocated proportionally more root dry matter to the lower drier soil compartment. The total production of root, irrespective of the upper or lower SVMC, was similar and there were no detected effects on leaf growth rate or gas exchange. The response of seminal roots to proportionally increase their allocation of dry matter, to the drier soil was unexpected with such plasticity of roots system development traditionally linked to heterogeneous nutrient distribution than accessing soil water. In experiments where the upper soil compartment was allowed to dry, root growth slowed and leaf growth and gas exchange declined. Subsequent experiments used root growth rates to determine when seminal root tips first came into contact with drying soil, with the intentions of determining how the observed root growth rates were maintained as an explanation for the observed changes in root allocation. Measurements of seminal root ABA and ethylene from roots within the drying soil are interpreted with respect to what is known about the physiological control of root growth in drying soil.

ABSTRACT

Diabetic macular edema can occur at any stage of diabetic retinopathy. It represents the main cause of vision loss in diabetes type I and II with a prevalence of 3-10% in diabetic patients of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). Our aim is to elaborate treatment guidelines and provide recommendations for the use of intravitreal ranibizumab for diabetic medical edema at IMSS. Nine retina specialists and 10 ophthalmologists from IMSS high specialty medical units gathered to discuss the bibliographic evidence for the safety and efficacy of ranibizumab for this disease, in order to create consensus on its use in the institution. Intravitreal ranibizumab injection should be used on patients presenting diffuse or cystic diabetic macular edema who have strict metabolic control and visual acuity between 20/30 and 20/200 ETDRS, as well as structural features, such as inferior foveal limit of 280 µm and ischemic areas no larger than 50% of the central foveal area. Treatment regime should consist of a loading charge of three monthly injections of ranibizumab 0.5 mg, followed by monthly follow-ups and treatment as needed according to anatomic and functional criteria. This consensus decision-making process on the criteria to treat and re-treat patients with this drug will result in better health outcomes than those currently observed among patients with diabetic macular edema at IMSS.


El edema macular diabético se presenta en cualquier etapa de la retinopatía diabética y representa la principal causa de pérdida de visión en las diabetes tipo I y II, con una prevalencia que va del 3 al 10% en pacientes diabéticos del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). El objetivo de este trabajo es elaborar una guía de tratamiento y recomendaciones para el uso de ranibizumab intravítreo en pacientes con edema macular diabético en el IMSS. Se llevó a cabo una reunión de expertos (9 retinólogos y 10 oftalmólogos) de las unidades médicas de alta especialidad del IMSS para realizar una revisión crítica de la eficacia y seguridad del ranibizumab para esta enfermedad y llegar a un consenso sobre el uso de este antiangiogénico en la institución. Las inyecciones de ranibizumab intravítreo se aplicarían a pacientes con edema macular diabético del tipo difuso o quístico, con un control metabólico estricto, agudeza visual en un rango de 20/30 a 20/200 ETDRS y criterios estructurales, como el límite foveal inferior a 280 µm y zonas isquémicas de no más del 50% de la zona central foveal. El esquema de tratamiento consistiría en una dosis de carga de tres inyecciones mensuales de ranibizumab de 0.5 mg y posteriormente seguimiento mensual y tratamiento por razón necesaria según criterios anatómicos y funcionales. El consenso sobre los criterios de tratamiento y retratamiento con este medicamento garantizará mejores resultados clínicos en pacientes con edema macular diabético en el IMSS.

ResumenPoblaciones endémicas de Hechtiaperotensis se han descrito en Puebla y Veracruz, México. La recolección de semillas de buena calidad permite su uso en conservación, investigación y restauración ecológica. Algunos compuestos para evaluar la calidad de las semillas silvestres y endémicas, como nitrato de potasio (KNO3) y ácido giberílico (AG3), se utilizan para incrementar la germinación de las semillas y disminuir la latencia. La prueba de cloruro de trifeniltetrazolio (tetrazolio) se correlaciona con la viabilidad de las semillas porque se basa en la actividad de las deshidrogenasas de tejidos vivos que catalizan la respiración mitocondrial. El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer el tamaño y el peso de las cápsulas y las semillas y la germinación y viabilidad de las semillas de H. perotensis recolectadas en Veracruz en 2012 y 2015. Las hipótesis fueron (1) que la germinación y la viabilidad de las semillas son independientes del año de recolecta, (2) que hay una concentración adecuada de tetrazolio para identificar la viabilidad de las semillas y (3) que el pretratamiento con KNO3 o AG3 incrementa la germinación de las semillas. La germinación se evaluó con un diseño completamente al azar con tres tratamientos (testigo y promotores de la germinación KNO3 0.2 % y AG3 500 mg/L), cuatro tratamientos para la prueba de viabilidad (testigo, 0.2, 0.5 y 1.0 % de tetrazolio) y seis repeticiones de cada tratamiento. La germinación se evaluó en 100 semillas y la viabilidad en 25. Los resultados entre y dentro de años se analizaron con ANDEVA y prueba de comparación múltiple de medias de Tukey. La proporción de semillas no germinadas se cuantificó junto con el número de plántulas normales y anormales, semillas con embrión viable o sin él, y con viabilidad baja o sin viabilidad. En promedio la muestra recolectada en 2012 tuvo 36 % de semillas con embrión viable, 7 con viabilidad baja, 24 % no viables y 33 % sin embrión. Este resultado fue significativamente diferente al de 2015, que presentó 87 % de embriones viables, 10 % con viabilidad baja, 0 % no viables y 3 % sin embrión. La germinación también fue significativamente diferente entre los años (22 y 92 %). Los tratamientos pregerminativos no modificaron la germinación. La germinación y la viabilidad de las semillas de H. perotensis varían significativamente entre los años de recolecta.

ABSTRACT

To further describe movement patterns and distribution of East Pacific green turtles (Chelonia mydas agassizii) and to determine threat levels for this species within the Eastern Pacific. In order to do this we combined published data from existing flipper tagging and early satellite tracking studies with data from an additional 12 satellite tracked green turtles (1996-2006). Three of these were tracked from their foraging grounds in the Gulf of California along the east coast of the Baja California peninsula to their breeding grounds in Michoacán (1337-2928 km). In addition, three post-nesting females were satellite tracked from Colola beach, Michoacán to their foraging grounds in southern Mexico and Central America (941.3-3020 km). A further six turtles were tracked in the Gulf of California within their foraging grounds giving insights into the scale of ranging behaviour. Turtles undertaking long-distance migrations showed a tendency to follow the coastline. Turtles tracked within foraging grounds showed that foraging individuals typically ranged up to 691.6 km (maximum) from release site location. Additionally, we carried out threat analysis (using the cumulative global human impact in the Eastern Pacific) clustering pre-existing satellite tracking studies from Galapagos, Costa Rica, and data obtained from this study; this indicated that turtles foraging and nesting in Central American waters are subject to the highest anthropogenic impact. Considering that turtles from all three rookeries were found to migrate towards Central America, it is highly important to implement conservation plans in Central American coastal areas to ensure the survival of the remaining green turtles in the Eastern Pacific. Finally, by combining satellite tracking data from this and previous studies, and data of tag returns we created the best available distributional patterns for this particular sea turtle species, which emphasized that conservation measures in key areas may have positive consequences on a regional scale.

BACKGROUND: Plants of Agave spp. perform Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and are highly drought-tolerant, but little is known concerning seed germination under low water availability. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of substrate water potential (ΨW) on seed germination and contrast hydrotime parameters of seven valuable and commercially-important Agave species from different geographical distributions and climatic regions of Mexico. Our hypothesis was that seed germination of Agave species is not affected by low water availability independently of seed biomass and the climate of their distribution area. RESULTS: Seed germination (at 25°C and in the dark) between 85 and 100% for all species occurred within 80-180 h at -0.03 MPa and 250-430 h at -1.0 MPa. Seed germination at -1.5 MPa declined to less than 50% (p < 0.05) for A. asperrima and A. cupreata but did not change significantly for A. americana var. marginata, A. lechuguilla and A. striata, although they showed the lowest mean base water potential (-2.01 to -2.64 MPa). Seed germination of 40% Agave species, from arid and semi-arid climates in this study, was not affected by the lower ΨW. CONCLUSION: Germination of seeds of Agave species is moderately affected by low water availability, is partially dependent of their ecological distribution, and is independent of seed mass.

ABSTRACT

Agave salmiana Otto ex Salm-Dyck, a crassulacean acid metabolism plant that is adapted to water-limited environments, has great potential for bioenergy production. However, drought stress decreases the requirement for light energy, and if the amount of incident light exceeds energy consumption, the photosynthetic apparatus can be injured, thereby limiting plant growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of drought and re-watering on the photosynthetic efficiency of A. salmiana seedlings. The leaf relative water content and leaf water potential decreased to 39.6 % and -1.1 MPa, respectively, over 115 days of water withholding and recovered after re-watering. Drought caused a direct effect on photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry in light-acclimated leaves, as indicated by a decrease in the photosynthetic electron transport rate. Additionally, down-regulation of photochemical activity occurred mainly through the inactivation of PSII reaction centres and an increased thermal dissipation capacity of the leaves. Prompt fluorescence kinetics also showed a larger pool of terminal electron acceptors in photosystem I (PSI) as well as an increase in some JIP-test parameters compared to controls, reflecting an enhanced efficiency and specific fluxes for electron transport from the plastoquinone pool to the PSI terminal acceptors. All the above parameters showed similar levels after re-watering. These results suggest that the thermal dissipation of excess energy and the increased energy conservation from photons absorbed by PSII to the reduction of PSI end acceptors may be an important acclimation mechanism to protect the photosynthetic apparatus from over-excitation in Agave plants.

ABSTRACT

The contamination levels of Toxocara spp. eggs in soil samples from a university campus in Mexico City were evaluated and analysed according to garden size, and were related with the percentage of Toxocara spp. eggs and its viability according to the soil characteristics. A total of 1458 soil samples collected in 15 gardens (six large and nine small) were analysed by sedimentation-flotation with zinc sulphate solution on at 33%. Contamination was low (12.9%), and egg viability was high (65.5%). The size of the garden had no influence on the presence and viability of Toxocara spp. eggs. Contamination was negatively correlated with the percentage of vegetation (r = -0. 61, P < 0.01) and the viability was negatively associated with the percentage of clay in the soil samples (r = -0.51, P < 0.04). The size of the garden did not influence the presence and viability of Toxocara spp. eggs.
