ABSTRACT

Introduction. The back school (BS) programs are used for treatment of chronic low back pain. We aimed to discover the influence this program had on pain, functional capacity, and working activity in our patients. Patients and method. A total of 69 patients arriving consecutively to the rehabilitation consultation with chronic low back pain were selected. The Oswestry, LBOS, and a questionnaire on sociodemographic and work details were administered before and three months after treatment. The study concluded with 60 patients. This BS characteristically uses occupational therapy sessions, in which ergonomic modifications were reinforced in working and domestic life, and an attempt was made to avoid passive attitudes towards the treatment. Statistical analysis was done with the Student's "t" test for paired-samples; p < 0.05. Result. An improvement was obtained on the mean scores in all questionnaires at three months of treatment, with the following variations in the scales: Oswestry 30.28 %-29.7 %, LOBS - 42.8 at 44.63 and VAS 52.37-49.23, without significant differences. However, there was a very important (13.4 %) of the work active persons at three months. A relationship was also observed between subjective perception of patient and scores obtained on the questionnaires. Discussion and conclusion. The program of BS that we have used improves the mean scores on all the scales used, in spite of not having obtained statistically significant differences. There was an important increase in the number of return to active work of the subjects
