ABSTRACT

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a rare pathological condition that without proper therapy often results in permanent vision loss. Diagnosis of IIH is often difficult, since it is characterized by a combination of numerous specific and non-specific ophthalmological and neurological criteria. Difficulties in diagnosis significantly delay the prescription of treatment, which affects the visual prognosis. The description of this clinical case is intended to present our own experience in the diagnosis and management tactics of a patient with this pathology, which will be useful for practicing ophthalmologists.

ABSTRACT

The article presents an analysis of literature data on the changes in structure and frequency of eye injuries among the adult population of the Russian Federation over the recent years. An estimation of various socio-economic and medical factors influencing these indicators was derived. The article also reviews current methods of treatment of eye injuries, and provides an evaluation of their effectiveness.

ABSTRACT

Pterygium is one of the modern problems of ophthalmology. The exact etiology and pathogenesis of this disease has not been reliably established and, as a result, there is no universal method for its recurrence-free treatment. The literature data on various methods of pterygium surgical treatment such as 'bare sclera', conjunctival autograft, limbal stem cells transplantation techniques, amniotic membrane plasty and other methods was analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of those surgery methods were identified. With consideration of the new data on proliferative nature of the disease, the results of adjuvant treatment of pterygium using cytostatics and anti-VEGF drugs were examined. Introduction of new technologies for the treatment of pterygium in practical health care can significantly improve the effectiveness of surgeries, reduce the incidence of postoperative complications and the number of relapses of the disease.

ABSTRACT

Pterygium is widely distributed in regions with hot and dry climate. Frequent relapses of the disease are due to delayed epithelialization of postoperative corneal erosion, associated inflammation and formation of dry areas of the cornea. Effective stimulation of corneal epithelium regeneration in the postoperative period could reduce the frequency of relapses. AIM: to compare the effectiveness, safety and tolerability of different keratoprotectors in patients after surgical treatment of pterygium. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 60 patients (73 eyes) with pterygium were operated on using classic McReynolds technique. Depending on the keratoprotector used postoperatively (Korneregel, Balarpan, or Stillavit), the patients were divided into three groups of 20 persons. In each group, the clinical picture during the postoperative period was evaluated at days 1, 3, and 7. RESULTS: As to the subjective symptoms relief and stimulation of epithelization, Stillavit capability was comparable to that of Korneregel, but Stillavit was free of the common side effect of Korneregel - blurred vision after instillation. Epithelialization rate under Stillavit therapy was higher than that under Balarpan. CONCLUSION: Stillavit can be recommended as the drug of choice for patients after surgical treatment of pterygium. Components of the preparation (0.16% sodium hyaluronate, 0.05% sodium chondroitin sulfate, and 1% dexapanthenolum) act on each of the links in the pathogenesis of recurrent pterygium - slow epithelialization of the cornea, associated inflammation and formation of dry areas of the cornea.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of dry eye syndrome in patients with initial primary pterygium for determination of a possible pathogenetic role of dry eye syndrome in the development of pterygium. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 30 patients with initial primary pterygium; besides conventional ophthalmic assessment, cytological examination of bulbar conjunctiva was performed in all cases. RESULTS: Signs of dry eye syndrome, of similar severity in both eyes, were found in 100% of patients. CONCLUSION: Dry eye can be one of the precipitating factors of primary pterygium.
