ABSTRACT

We report a case of previously undiagnosed Yersinia enterocolitica infection in a 46-year old woman. She consulted her physician because of continual weight loss and physical lassitude. A leucocytosis was found. Sonography revealed an excessive enlargement of abdominal lymph nodes. A malignant lymphoma was suspected and the patient underwent a staging by CT. There the disease was limited on mesenteric and retroperitoneal lymph nodes. Bone marrow biopsy and CT-guided lymph node biopsy did not confirm a systemic lymphatic disease. The patient did not undergo a special therapy. After six months, CT showed a clear regression of enlarged lymph nodes. Finally, a previous Yersinia enterocolitica infection of immunotype 03 could be proved serologically. At this time, the patient had no complaints. Diagnostic and differential diagnosis of benign abdominal lymph node enlargement are discussed based on literature.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To prove the visualisation of orbital foreign bodies by CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vitro we examined defined small objects of various materials (metal, wood, glass, stone) which are common as orbital foreign bodies, Density and minimum detectable size were studied. The findings of 27 patients with suspected orbital foreign bodies were compared with the results of plain radiographs, Comberg radiographs, sonography, and surgery. RESULTS: For iron, the minimum detectable size was 0.02 mm3. A differentiation of various materials by CT was not always possible, especially in small objects. There were wide differences in density of wood (-600 HU to +130 HU) according to hardness and water content. The CT scans correctly showed number and location of foreign bodies. Other methods were inferior in detection of foreign bodies. CONCLUSION: In diagnosis of foreign body injuries of the orbit, CT is the imaging method of choice.

ABSTRACT

A fiber optic gyroscope different from the standard concept is presented. A fused fiber 3 x 3 directional coupler provides a constant phase shift thus enabling the detection of rotation rate at the quadrature point without phase modulation. Bias errors due to birefringent coupling centers in the fiber coil are avoided by using an unpolarized light source. A contrast insensitive signal recovery scheme eliminates the influence of polarization fluctuations on the scale factor. First measurements with a prototype gyroscope (90 mm in diameter and 23 mm in height) show a bias stability of <4.7 degrees /h and scale factor accuracy of <0.1% in the range of +/-200 degrees /s.

ABSTRACT

In the Federal Republic of Germany the ownership of birds of prey and owls is subject to legal provisions for the conservation of nature and wildlife, as well as to the game law. Minimal requirements for housing and care of such birds result from regulations for animal welfare. According to these--arranged as to the pertinent paragraphs--recommendations are supplied for dealing with all aspects of animal welfare in the management and care of birds of prey and owls.

ABSTRACT

In a reception station for birds of prey, a form of tuberculosis predominantly localized to thigh and shank, was observed in different species of predatory birds during seven years. It is still unknown why the tuberculous granulomas are confined to these regions of the body. Possible explanations are discussed.
