ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A persistent post-traumatic cyclodialysis cleft can result in substantial visual loss due to subchoroidal effusion and macular folds with hypotony. A method of closure is needed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: After other methods had been tried, the authors used transscleral YAG laser cyclophotocoagulation in three consecutive patients with 20 applications in two rows of ten applications, 2 to 3 mm behind the limbus, at a power setting of 6 J, with a defocus setting of 9. RESULTS: The cleft was closed with restoration of normal intraocular pressure and recovery of visual function in all patients. CONCLUSION: Transscleral YAG laser cyclophotocoagulation is a simple, effective, noninvasive method of closing a persistent traumatic cyclodialysis cleft, which may make invasive surgical closure unnecessary.

ABSTRACT

A prospective, randomised, double blind, partial crossover, placebo controlled trial has been conducted to compare the performance of topical fusidic acid gel (Fucithalmic) and oral oxytetracycline as treatment for symptomatic chronic blepharitis. Treatment success was judged both by a reduction in symptoms and clinical examination before and after therapy. Seventy five per cent of patients with blepharitis and associated rosacea were symptomatically improved by fusidic acid gel and 50% by oxytetracycline, but fewer (35%) appeared to benefit from the combination. Patients with chronic blepharitis of other aetiologies did not respond to fusidic acid gel but 25% did benefit from oxytetracycline and 30% from the combination. Our results demonstrate the need to investigate patients with blepharitis for concomitant rosacea as they respond well to targeted therapy.

ABSTRACT

The heavy eye phenomenon presents as progressive esotropia and hypotropia in high myopia. It appears to be due to compression of the lateral rectus muscle against the lateral orbital wall by the enlarged myopic globe. We present the first published magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of this condition and a summary of the literature.
