ABSTRACT

The ultrasonic pulse-echo technique is widely employed to measure the wall thickness reduction due to corrosion in pipelines. Ultrasonic monitoring is noninvasive and can be performed online to evaluate the structural health of pipelines. Although ultrasound is a robust technique, it presents two main difficulties arising from the temperature variation in the medium being monitored: the mechanical assembly must have high stability and the ultrasonic propagation velocity must take into account the temperature variation. In this paper, a detailed strategy is presented to compensate for changes in the propagation velocity whenever the temperature changes. The method is considered self-compensated because the calibration data is obtained from the ultrasonic signals captured using the pipe under evaluation. The analysis of systematic errors in the temperature compensation is presented, first considering that a reference initial pipe thickness is given, and second when a reference sound velocity is given. The technique was evaluated under laboratory conditions using a closed loop with accelerated corrosion through the use of continuous flow saline water containing sand. In this test, the ultrasonic results were compared with the traditional coupon method used to determine corrosion loss. The results show that the self-compensated method was able to compensate for temperature fluctuations, and the total thickness loss measured by the ultrasound technique was close to the value measured by the coupons. Finally, the measurement system was tested in a production pipeline exposed to sunlight. The results show that the self-compensated method can reduce the oscillations in the thickness loss readings, caused by temperature swings, but large temperature variations cannot be completely compensated for. This experiment also shows the effects of low mechanical stability, which caused completely invalid results.

ABSTRACT

The extraction process of crude oil requires addition of water, resulting in complex emulsions, in which the phases must be separated before the petrochemical processing starts. An ultrasonic cell may be used to determine in real time the water content in water-in-crude oil emulsions. The water content of emulsions can be related to parameters, such as propagation velocity, density and relative attenuation. The ultrasonic measurement cell developed here is composed of two piezoelectric transducers, two rexolite buffer rods, and a sample chamber. It is an inexpensive and robust system. The cell measures the parameters at different temperatures and flow conditions. The tests were performed using emulsions with water volume concentrations from 0% to 40%. The experimental results show that this cell is able to obtain more precise parameters, when compared to similar ultrasonic techniques. The data acquired in real time may be used to improve the emulsion separation, decreasing greenhouse gases and energy requirements.

ABSTRACT

Heart failure is a chronic disease that affects thousands of people around the world, being characterized by the inability of one's heart to adequately pump their blood according to their body's needs. Its treatment may be performed through heart transplant. However, ventricular assist devices (VADs) can be used as a way to assist the patient while they wait for a transplant or as destination therapy, with them being responsible for the patients increase in the life expectancy. These devices are pumps that help supply the adequate cardiac output to the body. But the procedures used to implant this kind of device, the size and geometry of the pump are vital for the surgery success and assurance safety patient recuperation. Because of that many important researches center try to find pump geometry that comply these characteristics and comply human blood physiology. Then the reduction in size of these systems, which increases their reliability, biocompatibility and robustness, is essential to the complete implantation of the VADs, which is the main focus of the current state of art.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Previous work used phantoms to calibrate the nonlinear relationship between the gadolinium contrast concentration and the intensity of the magnetic resonance imaging signal. This work proposes a new nonlinear calibration procedure without phantoms and considers the variation of contrast agent mass minimum combined with the multiple input blood flow system. This also proposes a new single-input method with meaningful variables that is not influenced by reperfusion or noise generated by aliasing. The reperfusion in the lung is usually neglected and is not considered by the indicator dilution method. However, in cases of lung cancer, reperfusion cannot be neglected. A new multiple input method is formulated, and the contribution of the pulmonary artery and bronchial artery to lung perfusion can be considered and evaluated separately. METHODS: The calibration procedure applies the minimum variation of contrast agent mass in 3 different regions: (1) pulmonary artery, (2) left atrium, and (3) aorta. It was compared with four dimensional computerized tomography with iodine, which has a very high proportional relationship between contrast agent concentration and signal intensity. RESULTS: Nonlinear calibration was performed without phantoms, and it is in the range of phantom calibration. It successfully separated the contributions of the pulmonary and bronchial arteries. The proposed multiple input method was verified in 6 subjects with lung cancer, and perfusion from the bronchial artery, rich in oxygen, was identified as very high in the cancer region. CONCLUSIONS: Nonlinear calibration of the contrast agent without phantoms is possible. Separate contributions of the pulmonary artery and aorta can be determined.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: In patients with severe heart disease, the implantation of a ventricular assist device (VAD) may be necessary, especially in patients with an indication for heart transplantation. For this, the Institute Dante Pazzanese of Cardiology (IDPC) has developed an implantable centrifugal blood pump that will be able to help a diseased human heart to maintain physiological blood flow and pressure. This device will be used as a totally or partially implantable VAD. Therefore, performance assurance and correct specification of the VAD are important factors in achieving a safe interaction between the device and the patient's behavior or condition. Even with reliable devices, some failures may occur if the pumping control does not keep up with changes in the patient's behavior or condition. If the VAD control system has no fault tolerance and no system dynamic adaptation that occurs according to changes in the patient's cardiovascular system, a number of limitations can be observed in the results and effectiveness of these devices, especially in patients with acute comorbidities. This work proposes the application of a mechatronic approach to this class of devices based on advanced control, instrumentation, and automation techniques to define a method to develop a hierarchical supervisory control system capable of dynamically, automatically, and safely VAD control. For this methodology, concepts based on Bayesian networks (BN) were used to diagnose the patient's cardiovascular system conditions, Petri nets (PN) to generate the VAD control algorithm, and safety instrumented systems to ensure the safety of the VAD system.

ABSTRACT

This work shows the application of an ultrasonic multiple-scattering sensor for monitoring water-in-petroleum emulsions. The sensor consists of a commercial ultrasonic transducer with an array of cylindrical scatterers placed in the near field. The scatterers are thin metal bars arranged in rows in front of the transducer. The backscattering signals were analyzed by calculating the wave energy and by a cross-correlation between signal segments; they were also used to determine the propagation velocity in the emulsions. The tests performed used emulsions with water volume concentrations from 0% to 50%. The results showed that both the signal energy and propagation velocity strongly depended on the concentration of water in the emulsion. Therefore, the ultrasonic multiple-scattering sensor can be used for on-line and real-time monitoring of the water content in water-in-crude-oil emulsions.
