ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with the results of a follow-up over the period of 1986-1989 of function of the hypophyseo-thyroid system in children and adolescents (approximately 6000 persons), residing in the South-West of the Kaluga Region, where radiation fallouts were observed after the Chernobyl accident. The results were based upon the analysis of medical examinations and determination of the blood levels of TSH, T4 and T3. A certain functional activation of the thyroid system was observed in a majority of the examinees. A conclusion has been made of a necessity of a long-term follow-up of the thyroid of persons who received radioactive iodine in childhood.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with comparative evaluation of the influence of some therapeutic methods, based on the use of different radiation sources, dose fractionation regimens and radiomodifiers, on thyroid function in laryngeal cancer patients. Thyroid function was retrospectively assessed with regard to a course of disease within 2 yrs. after a radical course of radiation or combined therapy. Concomitant gamma-neutron therapy and radiotherapy in combined radiomodification were shown to produce the most inhibitory effect. Irrespective of a course of disease after a therapeutic course thyroid function in laryngeal cancer patients is decreased within 2 yrs. of observation.

ABSTRACT

A radioimmunoassay of 3 tumor markers and 13 hormones was performed before therapy in 166 laryngeal cancer patients with relation to tumor spreading. The levels of these markers and hormones excluding testosterone, were within control indices recommended in instructions for certain test kits. At the same time direct correlation was found between the content of ferritin, calcitonin, parathormone and tumor spreading. Testosterone concentration in all the patients was below the control level. Control of the hormonal status of laryngeal cancer patients was recommended during therapy with the use of radiomodifying agents to determine the effect of various radiomodifiers on the endocrine system, for the assessment of therapeutic efficacy and, probably, the prediction of the course of the disease.

ABSTRACT

Interaction of blood serum proteins with native DNA at low ionic strength [0.05 M NaCl and 0.015 M sodium citrate], estimated by adsorption of DNA-protein complex on nitrocellulose filtrs, depended on specific activity, molecular weight of DNA as well as on the amount of DNA and blood serum in the samples. DNA-binding activity of blood serum from the patients should be estimated at such ratio of components, when the blood serum from healthy persons adsorbed minimal quantities of DNA, since the molecular weight and specific activity of the DNA preparations might vary in various samples. As a factor, regulating the rate of DNA binding on filtrs, such amount of blood serum from patients should be added to the samples, which corresponded to the maximal amount of normal blood serum causing no binding with the DNA preparations.

ABSTRACT

125I-labeled double-stranded polyribonucleotide complex was used for detection of antibodies to double-stranded RNA in sera from people and immunized animals by the method of immune complex adsorption by the nitrocellulose filters. The technique is simple and sensitive. Antibodies to double-stranded RNA WERE detected in sera from patients with different diseases and from normal individuals. Systemic lupus erythematosus sera contain as a rule higher amounts of antibodies to double-stranded RNA. Often these antibodies were measured together with those directed towards native and denatured DNA. Anti-double-stranded RNA antibodies from sera of immunised animals and patients with systemic lupus erythematosus are highly specific.

ABSTRACT

The conditions were developed to measure antibodies to denatured and native DNA. It was shown that membrane filters treated with alkali adsorbed denatured DNA complexed with antibodies. Utilizing this method it was shown that antibodies to denatured DNA react with pyrimidines (probably thymine). This assay provides proof of the wide existence antibodies to native DNA in the sera of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. DNA-binding of sera was significantly depended on reaction condition.
