ABSTRACT

Chromobacterium violaceum (C. violaceum) is a gram-negative bacillus that is widespread in tropical and subtropical areas. Although C. violaceum rarely infects humans, it can cause critical illness with a mortality rate above 50%. Here, we report the successful treatment of a 15-year-old male who presented with bloodstream infection of C. violaceum along with sepsis, specific skin lesions, and liver abscesses. Cardiogenic shock induced by sepsis was reversed by venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO). Moreover, C. violaceum-related purpura fulminans, which is reported herein for the first time, was ameliorated after treatment. This case report demonstrates the virulence of C. violaceum with the aim of raising clinical awareness of this disease.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Both disseminated intravascular coagulation and thrombotic microangiopathy are complications of sepsis as Salmonella septicemia, respectively. They are related and have similar clinical characteristics as thrombopenia and organ dysfunctions. They rarely co-occur in some specific cases, which requires a clear distinction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old woman had just undergone intracranial surgery and suffered from Salmonella derby septicemia with multiorgan involvement in the hospital. Laboratory workup demonstrated coagulation disorder, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury, leading to the co-occurrence of disseminated intravascular coagulation and secondary thrombotic microangiopathy. She received antibiotics, plasma exchange therapy, dialysis, mechanical ventilation, fluids, and vasopressors and gained full recovery without complications. CONCLUSION: Disseminated intravascular coagulation and secondary thrombotic microangiopathy can co-occur in Salmonella derby septicemia. They should be treated cautiously in diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Thrombotic microangiopathy should not be missed just because of the diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation. Proper and timely identification of thrombotic microangiopathy with a diagnostic algorithm is essential for appropriate treatment and better outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Aqueous Zn battery has been a promising alternative battery in large-scale energy storage systems due to its cost-effectiveness, sustainability, and intrinsic safety. However, its cycle life is impeded by the dendrite formation, severe corrosion, and side reactions on the zinc metal anode. Most ex situ coatings on the zinc surface extend the life span of zinc anodes but have drawbacks in Zn2+ ion conductivity. Herein, a robust sodium zinc phosphate layer was in situ built on zinc metal foil anode (Zn@NZP) via facile electrodeposition. The Zn2+ ion conducting protection layer alleviates corrosion, suppresses zinc dendrites, and lowers the energy barrier of Zn2+ plating and stripping. As a result, the Zn@NZP anode renders dendrite-free plating/stripping with a small overpotential of about 44 mV and a 12-fold enhancement long-life span compared to the bare zinc. Furthermore, a full cell using the Zn@NZP anode shows much improved capacity and cycling stability. This work provides a promising anode candidate for dendrite-free aqueous zinc ion batteries.

ABSTRACT

Hydrated V2O5 with unique physical and chemical characteristics has been widely used in various function devices, including solar cells, catalysts, electrochromic windows, supercapacitors, and batteries. Recently, it has attracted extensive attention because of the enormous potential for the high-performance aqueous zinc ion battery cathode. Although great progress has been made in developing applications of hydrated V2O5, little research focuses on improving current synthesis methods, which have disadvantages of massive energy consumption, tedious reaction time, and/or low efficiency. Herein, an improved synthesis method is developed for hydrated V2O5 nanoflakes according to the phenomenon that the reactions between V2O5 and peroxide can be dramatically accelerated with low-temperature heating. Porous hydrated V2O5 nanoflake gel was obtained from cheap raw materials at 40 °C in 30 min. It shows a high specific capacity, of 346.6 mAh/g, at 0.1 A/g; retains 55.2% of that at 20 A/g; and retains a specific capacity of 221.0 mAh/g after 1800 charging/discharging cycles at 1 A/g as an aqueous zinc ion battery cathode material. This work provides a highly facile and rapid synthesis method for hydrated V2O5, which may favor its applications in energy storage and other functional devices.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a severe infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that binds to the cells; angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor. In the first severe case of COVID-19 in Shenzhen city, we found that in addition to the typical clinical manifestations, our patient presented hemoptysis, refractory hypoxemia and pulmonary fibrosis-like changes on computed tomography (CT) involving alveoli and pulmonary interstitium in the early stage and acute pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure in the later stage, which were not completely justified by myocarditis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary fibrosis and high PEEP level. The lung compliance deterioration of this patient was not as serious as we expected, indicating classic ARDS was not existed. Simultaneously, the first autopsy report of COVID-19 in China showed normal-structured alveoli and massive thick excretion in the airway. Then, we speculated that the virus not only attacked alveolar epithelial cells, but also affected pulmonary vascular endothelial cells. Imbalance in the ACE2-RAAS- bradykinin axis and the cytokine storm could be an important mechanism leading to pathophysiological changes in pulmonary vascular and secondary refractory hypoxemia. Pulmonary vasculitis or capillaritis associated to immune damage and an inflammatory storm could exist in COVID-19 because of ground-glass opacities in the subpleural area, which are similar to connective tissue disease associated interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD). Thus, this case elucidates new treatment measures for COVID-19.
