ABSTRACT

The aims of this research were to prepare activated carbon (AC) impregnated with tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) for use in carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and to then develop the AC-TEPA sorbent with titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a catalyst for photocatalytic reduction. The AC was impregnated with TEPA at three loading levels (2.5, 5, and 10% [w/w]) and then examined for its CO2 adsorption capacity under an ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. The use of 5% (w/w) TEPA-impregnated AC (AC_5T) provided the highest CO2 adsorption capacity and long-term operation with a regeneration ability for up to 10 cycles. Then, AC_5T-doped TiO2 (AC_5T-TiO2) was prepared as a photocatalytic reduction catalyst, since the presence of carbon and nitrogen in AC_5T could reduce the band gap energy and so enhance the photocatalytic reduction. In addition, the CO2-saturated AC_5T was used as a CO2 source that could be directly converted to valuable chemicals using the AC_5T-TiO2 catalyst under photocatalytic reduction. Products were obtained in both the liquid (methanol) and gaseous (methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen) phases. Accordingly, the challenge of this research was to make valuable products from CO2 and to manage waste tires, following the circular economy concept.

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to study the deoxygenation of two different waste cooking oils (WCOs; palm oil and soybean oil) using alumina (γ-Al2O3)-supported and unsupported NiMoS2 catalysts prepared by the hydrothermal method. The variables evaluated in this study were the reactant concentration, reaction time, and nickel (Ni)/[Ni + molybdenum (Mo)] atomic ratio (0.2 and 0.3) affecting the yield and selectivity of alkane products. The supported NiMo sulfide (NiMoS2)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst prepared by impregnation had the drawback of a lack of layers and stacks, so combining the γ-Al2O3 with unsupported NiMoS2 catalysts using a hydrothermal method was evaluated. The main products obtained from the deoxygenation of the two WCOs were normal (n-)alkane compounds (C15, C16, C17, and C18). The catalyst efficiency was ranked as 0.2-NiMoS2/γ-Al2O3 ≈ 0.2-NiMoS2 > 0.3-NiMoS2/γ-Al2O3 ≈ 0.3-NiMoS2. The catalyst that gave the high n-C15-C18 yield was 0.2-NiMoS2/γ-Al2O3 under a reaction condition of 300 °C, 40 bar initial H2 pressure, and oil concentration of 5 wt %. For the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of waste palm oil, the n-C14-C18 yield was 56.4% (C14, C15, C16, C17, and C18 at 1.3, 6.7, 14.5, 11.8, and 22.1%, respectively), while that for the waste soybean oil was 58% (C14, C15, C16, C17, and C18 at 1.1, 3.8, 6.7, 17.2, and 29.2%, respectively). The n-C18/n-C17 and n-C16/n-C15 ratios were both greater than 1 for both types of WCO, revealing that the deoxygenation mainly proceeded via HDO rather than decarbonylation and decarboxylation. The 5-10% lower n-C14-C18 yield from the waste oil compared with the fresh oil was acceptable, implying the effective oil treatment and some impurity removal.

ABSTRACT

Polyisoprene-silica (PIP-co-RAFT-SiO2) nanoparticles were prepared via reversible addition⁻fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization using water-soluble initiators, 4,4'-Azobis (4-cyanopentanoic acid) (ACP) and 2,2'-Azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (V50). The particle size of emulsion prepared using ACP initiator was smaller than that using V50 initiator because the V50 initiator was more active toward decomposition than the ACP initiator. A high monomer conversion (84%), grafting efficiency (83%) and small particle size (38 nm) with narrow size distribution were achieved at optimum condition. The PIP-co-RAFT-SiO2 nanoparticles exhibited core⁻shell morphology with silica encapsulated with polyisoprene (PIP). The new PIP-SiO2 nanoparticles could be applied as effective filler in rubber composites that possess good mechanical and thermal properties.
