ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although fibronectin has an important role in wound repair, nearly no human studies to date have investigated its condition in ulcerative colitis (UC) histologically. E-cadherin plays a critical role in the repair of normal epithelial tissues. This study aims to find out the condition of these two molecules in UC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The records of 22 UC patients during the period of 2004‒2009 were retrospectively analyzed. We also included 24 patients with sporadic colorectal cancer (SCC) and 24 patients with normal colonoscopic biopsies who served as the control group. Colonoscopic biopsies were stained with E-cadherin and fibronectin. RESULTS: The E-cadherin loss was significantly more prominent in the SCC group, followed by the UC group and control group. The situation was reverse for fibronectin. We also observed that while the E-cadherin loss was still ongoing in all of the endoscopically inactive cases, the fibronectin staining resembled the staining pattern of normal individuals in ten out of thirteen UC patients. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the decrease in E-cadherin, even in the inactive period, might be the cause of why UC is not just a compensatory change in repair of inflammation. The results of staining with fibronectin in UC patients were between normal individuals and SCC patients. Further studies are necessary to confirm our results (Tab. 2, Fig. 6, Ref. 15). ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The treatment of patients with peripartum hemorrhage is unfortunately characterized by inadequate treatment that does not adhere to standard therapeutic measures. AIM: Assessment of different management strategies among patients with severe hemorrhage, particularly the ones with "near-miss" maternal morbidity and mortality to establish clinically useful guidelines for the prevention and management of peripartum hemorrhage. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, the medical records of 458 patients who have experienced peripartum hemorrhage between March 2009 and March 2012 in a tertiary perinatal center were retrospectively reviewed. Specific surgical treatment modalities utilized to 61 patients with severe peripartum hemorrhage with respect to the procedure timing and effectivity were compared according to the outcomes and efficiency. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients who have been diagnosed as severe peripartum hemorrhage have been included to the study. Six (75%) of the 8 patients who were treated with B-Lynch brace suture for uterine atony and 9 (60%) of the 15 patients who were treated with the Bakri balloon tamponade system for uterine atony or placenta accreta required hysterectomy following the initial therapeutic measures. The patients who have been treated with bilateral hypogastric artery ligation and B-Lynch brace suture or Bakri balloon uterine tamponade system were less likely to need a complementary hysterectomy for definitive treatment of peripartum hemorrhage when compared with patients treated with either B-Lynch brace suture or Bakri uterine tamponade balloon system alone. CONCLUSIONS: The efficiency of B-Lynch compression brace sutures and the Bakri balloon uterine tamponade system is unpredictable in terms of the need for hysterectomy for peripartum hemorrhage patients diagnosed as either uterine atony or placenta previa. Regardless of the initial diagnosis, these modalities seem to be more effective in alleviating peripartum hemorrhage when accompanied by hypogastric artery ligation.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: There has been a long-standing interest in the identification of medicinal plants and derived natural products for developing anticancer agents. This work aimed at investigating the antiprolipherative properties of Origanum acutidens (OA) on breast cancer. METHODS: OA water extracts were studied for cytotoxicity against the breast cancer cell lines MCF-7, MDA-MB-468 and MDA-MB-231. In vitro apoptosis studies of these cancer cell lines were performed by annexin V staining in flow cytometry analyses. Immunohistochemistry studies for Ki-67 and caspase-7 of tumor tissue sections of dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) -induced mammary cancer in rats were also performed. TUNEL assay was used to detect apoptotic cells of tumor tissue. In vivo anticancer activity testing was carried out by inhibiting the growth of DMBA-induced mammary cancer in rats. RESULTS: OA showed cytotoxicity on all 3 cancer cell lines. Annexin-positive cells level in OA-treated cell lines were significantly higher compared with untreated control cells (p=0.002). The expressions of caspase-7 protein and TUNEL-positive cells were much higher for the rats treated by OA, compared with the untreated control group (p<0.05). The expressions of the Ki-67 decreased in the treated groups compared with the control group (p<0.05). In vivo studies showed that the mean tumor volume inhibition ratio in OA-treated group was 41 % compared with the untreated rats (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: These results indicate that OA has antitumor activity against breast cancer cell lines.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We investigated experimentally the in vivo prophylactic efficacies of linezolid, teicoplanin and vancomycin in subcutaneously implanted dacron graft infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dacron grafts (1 cm(2)) were aseptically implanted into subcutaneous pockets that were surgically prepared in the backs of 50 rats. Ten of these rats were used as the control group (group I). Grafts in the remaining 40 rats were infected by inoculation of MRSA at the concentration of 2 x 10(7) colony-forming units (CFU)/ml. Ten of these rats constituted the contaminated, untreated group II. The other three study groups comprising 10 rats each were contaminated and then treated with linezolid (group III), teicoplanin (group IV) and vancomycin (group V), respectively. All rats were sacrificed and the grafts were removed after seven days and evaluated. RESULTS: The bacterial count decreased in the rats from the groups treated with linezolid, teicoplanin and vancomycin. The linezolid and teicoplanin groups, however, showed a significantly lower bacterial number than the vancomycin group (p = 0.009 and p = 0.01). The intensity of inflammation was highest in the contaminated, untreated group, as expected. CONCLUSIONS: Single-dose linezolid, teicoplanin and vancomycin for peri-operative prophylaxis may prevent bacterial growth in vascular graft infections. The effect of linezolid and teicoplanin seemed similar and their effect was greater than that of vancomycin.

ABSTRACT

Abnormal regulation of the cell cycle is a feature of many neoplasms. The role of cell cycle regulators in oncogenesis has been investigated in many human tumors. Alteration of the retinoblastoma (pRb) and cyclin D1 disrupt the Rb pathway and occur in many carcinomas. However the expression of the Rb and cyclin D1 in intestinal type gastric carcinoma is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of Rb and cyclinD1 in resected gastric carcinoma, their adjacent nonneoplastic mucosa and normal gastric mucosa, and finally to provide insights into the role of the Rb and cyclin D1 in gastric carcinogenesis. We investigated Rb and cyclin D1 expression in 43 patients (32 men, 11 women; mean age: 64) with primary gastric adenocarcinoma and compared the results with adjacent nonneoplastic mucosa. Adjacent nonneoplastic mucosa consisted of atrophy, dysplasia, intestinal metaplasia and gastritis. Expression of Rb was detected in 30 (69.7%) of gastric carcinoma, 18 (41.8%) of the adjacent nonneoplastic mucosa. Expression of cyclinD1 protein was detected in 31 (72%) of gastric carcinoma, 24 (55.8%) of adjacent nonneoplastic mucosa. Expression of Rb and cyclinD1 was not detected in normal gastric mucosa. The positive rate of Rb and cyclin D1 expression in gastric carcinoma was significantly higher than that adjacent nonneoplastic mucosa (p<0.05). There were significant trends for increased expression of Rb and cyclinD1 from nonneoplastic mucosa including atrophy, dyplasia, intestinal metaplasia and gastritis to carcinoma. These results suggested that positive expression of pRb and cyclinD1 might be an early event in gastric carcinoma and it tend to begin at precursor lesions and maintain throughout the progression of infiltration. Key words: Retinoblastoma, cyclin D1, gastric carcinoma, dysplasia, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia.

ABSTRACT

How to predict and better understand the effective properties of disordered material mixtures has been a long-standing problem in different research fields, especially in condensed matter physics. In order to address this subject and achieve a better understanding of the frequency-dependent properties of these systems, a large 2D L × L square structure of resistors and capacitors was used to calculate the immittance response of a network formed by random filling of binary conductor/insulator phases with 1000 Ω resistors and 10 nF capacitors. The effects of percolating clusters on the immittance response were studied statistically through the generation of 10 000 different random network samples at the percolation threshold. The scattering of the imaginary part of the immittance near the dc limit shows a clear separation between the responses of percolating and non-percolating samples, with the gap between their distributions dependent on both network size and applied frequency. These results could be used to monitor connectivity in composite materials. The effects of the content and structure of the percolating path on the nature of the observed dispersion were investigated, with special attention paid to the geometrical fractal concept of the backbone and its influence on the behavior of relaxation-time distributions. For three different resistor-capacitor proportions, the appropriateness of many fitting models was investigated for modeling and analyzing individual resistor-capacitor network dispersed frequency responses using complex-nonlinear-least-squares fitting. Several remarkable new features were identified, including a useful duality relationship and the need for composite fitting models rather than either a simple power law or a single Davidson-Cole one. Good fits of data for fully percolating random networks required two dispersive fitting models in parallel or series, with a cutoff at short times of the distribution of relaxation times of one of them. In addition, such fits surprisingly led to cutoff parameters, including a primitive relaxation or crossover time, with estimated values comparable to those found for real dispersive materials.

ABSTRACT

The frequencies of HLA antigens were examined in a sample of 75 patients with schizophrenia and 35 patients with mood disorders. We compared the data obtained from this population with data obtained in another study with 3731 healthy subjects. Statistically significant increases were observed in the frequencies of HLA A10, A11, and A29 and a statistically significant decrease was observed in the frequency of HLA A2 in patients with schizophrenia. The increased frequency in HLA B16 in patients with mood disorders was also statistically significant.

ABSTRACT

Two cases of carpal-tarsal osteolysis are described. It is believed that clinical and radiological findings of the patients are compatible with the dominant type of the disease. Although case 2 does not have the indications of nephropathy, it is rather too early to decide whether he has it or not, because of his age.
